Updated 3 September 2001
Sam Orr Pond is located below Highway 127 in Bocabec, near the south-west corner of Saint Patrick Parish, where it drains into Birch Cove. This fascinating body of water contains a rare colony of quahogs and has an interesting geological history. It is part of the Caughey-Taylor Nature Preserve that was recently created by the Nature Trust of New Brunswick, Inc. Genealogy
| The most likely source of
the pond's name was one Samuel Orr, who was born July 29,
1868 or 1867 (1)
to Thomas Orr and Martha Taggart. The family was
described in the Memoirs of Annie M. Holt as
living in the general vicinity of the pond, although the
pond was not mentioned by name. Sam was described as a
"farmer and weir fisherman at home." (2)
Miss Holt also made a quick reference to "the Sam
Orr property in lower Bocabec." (3) The Orr family
was also listed in each of the 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901
censuses of Saint Patrick Parish.(4) In all of the
censuses, it is clear that the family was living in the
area of the pond because the families listed adjacent to
the Orrs, such as the Brownriggs, are also know to
have lived in that part of Bocabec. Sam Orr died on
August 23, 1945 (5)
and was buried in the Bocabec Presbyterian Cemetery
together with two of his sisters. His death notice
in the Saint Croix Courier appeared September 6,
1945.(6)
Sam Orr's grandfather was the John Orr, Sr. listed below who bought half of Penobscot Lot 19 in 1821 and all of Penobscot Lot 17 in 1834. John Sr. was married to Mary Carrick and they had at least two sons, namely Thomas (Sam's father above) and John Jr. Thomas Orr inherited Lot 17 from John Sr. and bought the north-east half of Lot 18 from William and Eliza Jane Orr (relation unknown). John Orr Jr. inherited the south-west half of Lot 19 but eventually sold it and moved to Holts Point Road, where he is described as living by Annie M. Holt.(7) There were at least two other Samuel Orrs
in Bocabec but they seem to have lived in the Grove
Settlement area on the west side of Kerrs Lake. One is
listed in the deaths
in the 1871 census, and some are listed in Hutchinson's directories.
1. July 29 is given
in the 1901 census, p. 16 and on Sam Orr's death
certificate. 1868 is given in the 1901 census but 1867 is
given on the death certificate. The age of 22 in the 1891
census implies a birth year of 1868, while the ages of 3
and 13 in the 1871 and 1881 censuses imply a birth year
of 1867. |
