| 192 | Charles F. Washburn, 61, of Perry died Dec. 14, 2005, of a brain aneurysm, at Calais Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 4, 1944, in St. Stephen, N.B., the son of C. Marshall and Mildred Scott Washburn. The family lived in Perry during Mr. Washburn's younger years, then moved to Bangor when he was nine. His family had a summer camp on Pushaw Lake and when he was 10 years old, Mr. Washburn printed a weekly newspaper for people around the lake, making deliveries in his boat. Some of his lifelong interests began when he was still a young boy, including geography and radio. He was fascinated by radios and electronics and he made his own short-wave radios. He was a 1961 graduate of Bangor High School and received a degree in international relations and political science in 1965, from the University of Maine, where he was a disc jockey at the campus radio station. He graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1968, and began practicing in Machias shortly after. In June of 1967, he married Karlene Kelley of Machias and the two lived in Perry after Mr. Washburn finished law school. The couple divorced in 1984, but remained friends. Together they had one child, Elizabeth Louise. In 1980, Mr. Washburn was disbarred and gave up the practice of law after making some poor decisions. His lack of judgement sent him to Maine State Prison for nearly three years. After his release, he returned to Orono to study computer science. In Oct. 1984, he married Bonnie Faatz, originally of Summit, N.J. In 1989, the two moved back to Perry, where Mr. Washburn pursued gardening and computer programming. He had a number of hobbies and interests, including music, politics, reading and home repair. He also was a good neighbor who was always willing to help someone out. He was well traveled, having been to Europe twice, Bermuda, Puerto Rico and for many years, took annual trips to the Maritime provinces. He was a past president of the Eastport Rotary Club, past president of the Washington County Bar Association and, in his younger years, very active in Republican politics, including running for the Legislature in 1970. He was predeceased by his parents, three aunts and one uncle. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his daughter, Elizabeth Kelley Washburn of Boston; his former wife, Karlene Hale of Monmouth; and several cousins. No service is scheduled at this time, but a memorial is tentatively planned for this summer on the beach in Perry. A memorial website is currently being created by his daughter and a notice stating its web address will be published in this paper the first week of January. The site will be for friends and family to share memories, and will feature plans for the service.[Bangor, Maine Daily News 31 Dec 2005] | |

| 199 | John "Jack" A. McCannell, passed away peacefully on the morning of Jan. 9, 2006. He was born Aug. 28, 1926, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick to Cordelia (Norton) and Neil McCannell. He came from a large family, growing up in Princeton with 11 brothers and sisters and many relatives in Baileyville and on Beals Island, known to all of them as "Jackie." Jack left Washington County as a teen, looking for work and a bit of adventure, living mostly in the Bangor area. He returned in the late 60's with his wife, Catherine (Lowe) and two children, Karen and Mary. He worked for the Mearl Corporation in Eastport before eventually starting a small clothing store in 1976, at the head of the breakwater, known to everyone as the "Shirt Shop." He enjoyed running the business and looked forward to going to work. It gave him an opportunity to be in touch with the town and sometimes a chance to help those who needed it. He especially enjoyed seeing familiar "summer people" and returning vacationers year after year. Often taped to the side of the cash register were pictures of these friends and their children. Jack had a number of hobbies, including woodcarving and painting, but will best be remembered for his love of amateur radio. He enjoyed talking on the CB as "Carver" to friends in Lubec and Campobello in the 70's. He also enjoyed "skipping", talking on a Tram radio to people all over the world. His daughter remembers him climbing to the roof on a number of occasions to adjust the antenna just right and the day when finally he brought home some gadget that would do it for him from the kitchen! As jack got older he liked spending time in the garden and made it a personal quest to grow the best tomatoes, trying one summer, seven different varieties to see which would have the best flavor. For the past three years, Jack lived at Washington Place, an assisted living facility in Calais. He had his independence as well as the help he needed with his meds and meals. The staff there was wonderful and he thought of them as part of his family. Because of the care he received while at Washington Place and the care of Dr. Peter Wilkinson, he was able to spend this past Christmas with his family and his last days with those who knew him. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; an infant son, Thomas; and his daughter, Karen Devlin; his brothers, Oscar, Willis, Don, Norton and Richard; and sisters, Joyce, Marilyn and Florence. He is survived by his daughter, Mary her husband, Dana Davidson and her children, Amy, Michael, Katy and Jacob Muir of Calais; as well as granddaughter, Whitney Devlin of Brewer. Jack is also survived by his sister, Ruth Ann McCannell of Houlton; his brother, Neil "DA" and his wife, Dot McCannell of Lewiston; and his brother, James McCannell of Vienna, Va., many, many nieces nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service and graveside committal will be held in the spring and announced at a later date. Jack best enjoyed flowers in gardens and fresh air. Therefore, at his request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Activity Kitty, care of Karen Constant, Washington Place, 40 Palmer St., Calais, ME 04619.
