First Generation

1. John MONAGHAN. Born Circa 1825 in Ireland. Died 7 Apr 1903. Occupation Blacksmith.

Research:       John Monaghan emigrated to Canada circa 1844 .  He traded his original property with an unknown person for his home on Pleasant St., St. Stephen.  The two properties abut each other on parallel streets.  All three of his children were born and raised on the new property.  He owned his own blacksmith shop which was located on Water St., St. Stephen.

He married Mary Ann McKEWEN, daughter of Thomas McKEWEN & Mary, 17 Feb 1850. Born 31 Aug 1828. Died 6 Jun 1912.
They had the following children:

Second Generation

2. Sarah (Sis) Elizabeth MONAGHAN. Daughter of John MONAGHAN & Mary Ann McKEWEN. Born 11 Dec 1852 in St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Died 20 Nov 1916.

3. Edward James MONAGHAN. Son of John MONAGHAN & Mary Ann McKEWEN. Born 22 Dec 1859 in St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Died 7 Jul 1930 in Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Buried in St Stephen Rural Cemetery, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Occupation Blacksmith; Milltown Police Officer; Farmer1.

Research:      Edward was an athlete (long distance runner) of local fame in his twenties.  He worked for many years at the blacksmith trade when the lumber industry was flourishing along the St. Croix.  He was at one time police officer in Milltown and held the respect of all law-abiding citizens.  Later in life he purchased a small farm at Mohannas where he was quite successful until failing health proved an obstacle to his active work.
     When he could no longer run the farm, his son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Grace, took it over.  Two of his granddaughters, Elizabeth June Monaghan and Shirley Grace Monaghan, were born there shortly before his death.
     The officiating clergyman at his funeral was Rev. Mr. Byers of the United Church, Upper Mills.  The bearers were Fred Williams, J. L. McIntosh, George Blaney and Clifford Libby.

He married Ella Jane JOHNSTON, daughter of Joseph JOHNSTON & Margaret A. IRVIN, 5 Oct 1892 in Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Born 5 Oct 1861 in Tower Hill, St. David, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Died 20 Nov 1937 in Mohannas, St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Buried 22 Nov 1937 in St. Stephen Rural Cemetery, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada.

Research:      Ella had been ill only a few days with a cold that developed into pneumonia.  She died at her home in Mohannas.  Rev. A. R. McIver of the United Church officiated at her funeral service.

They had the following children:

4. Charles E. MONAGHAN. Son of John MONAGHAN & Mary Ann McKEWEN. Born Aug 1860 in St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Died 17 Jul 1925 in Chipman Mem. Hosp., St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB, Canada. Occupation Blacksmith.

Research:      Charles never married, but rumor has it that he had children out of wedlock.  He was an alcoholic.
