INTRODUCTION
My inspiration for pursuing my family genealogy was my maternal grandmother, Carrie Kemp Scott. She would tell me stories of her great-grandmother and daughters making a difficult crossing of the Atlantic in a ship from Germany to America. Grandma knew all her second cousins well, and how everyone was related. After her death in 1968, I realized that no one had recorded any of her family history. This was a great loss. My paternal grandmother, Arlene Nickels Drew Estabrook, was also the source of our family history on my father's side of the family. I am fortunate that she had so many relatives who have shared the knowledge she had of our family history and relationships. About 20 years ago, I seriously began my research. I started writing letters to distant cousins. I also found a book written by Florence C. Estabrooks on the Estabrook family from the Saint John region of New Brunswick, Canada. My ancestor Hammond Estabrook and his children were the last of his line in this book. I decided to extend this line as far as I could. Little did I know how large a project this would become! Even under the hardships of life in the wilderness of Aroostook County, the Williams and Estabrook families thrived. Families with 10 children were common. Since the area around the Estabrook Settlement was small, over time, the many intermarriages between the Williams and Estabrook families, as well as other families, have produced a family tree that has many twists and turns. Also, there is a strong family tradition of naming children after aunts and uncles, which results in some difficulty in placing a child with the correct parents. I hope I have been able to clarify some of this confusion. I hope that my many cousins will find this genealogy useful and will help me continue to document our family history.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I'd like to thank my many distant cousins, whom I've never met, who made such a great effort on my behalf to send me their family information. This genealogy would have been impossible to write without them. I especially would like to thank, Velora Black, Laurie McQuarry, Geraldine Tidd Scott, Floyd M. Williams, and Millard Simpson. Millard's letters recounting his memories of growing up in Amity, were priceless. I also thank him for the photos he sent. There is a book I'd like to recommend, "ISAAC SIMPSON'S WORLD" by Geraldine Tidd Scott, which has wonderful photographs of Amity and the surrounding area around the 1900s. The people and life of our ancestors are recorded, with an insightful text to illuminate these images of our family past. I'd also like to thank Geraldine for the photos she sent me which did not make it into the book. I'd like to thank the many researchers at libraries and historical societies, who have also gone out of their way to volunteer their time in tracking down documentation. In particular, many thanks go to Phil Getchel at the Bangor Public Library, Dale Mower at the Maine Genealogical and Historical Society, and Virginia Merrill, Town Clerk of Hodgdon, Maine.

WILLIAMS FAMILY OF AROOSTOOK COUNTY, MAINE
Descendants of William W. Williams (1782-1860)
FAMILY OF WILLIAM W. WILLIAMS:
William's father, REUBEN WILLIAMS, was born ca 1755/1760 in Westchester Co., New York. Reuben was the son of HARMEN WILLIAMS (1729-1785) and MARITIE VAN TASSEL (born 1713). Reuben married in New York to MARY VAN TASSELL. She was born June 16, 1753 in Westchester Co., New York. Mary was the daughter of WILLIAM VAN TASSELL (born 1713) and SUSANNAH WILLIAMS (born 1723). When the Revolutionary War broke out, Reuben fought with the Loyalists, joining Major Berrymore's Regiment of Voluntary Cavalry, under Col. Delancy. Because of this, he lost his manor, farm, horses, livestock, and money. His left arm was shot off above the wrist by a cannonball. In 1783 he joined one of the first group of Westchester Co. Loyalists to be resettled in Parrtown (later renamed Saint John), New Brunswick, Canada. It is unclear whether William was born in Dec.1782 in Westchester Co., New York, or 1784 in New Brunswick. The first winter in Saint John was extremely difficult. Poor planning, by the leaders of this Loyalist group, resulted in few shelters having been built. Inadequate provisions were provided for these reluctant settlers during a very harsh winter. Many went hungry. This Loyalist group relied on the kindest of their neighbors who shared their cabins, until they were very overcrowded. Others had to make do with tents. Many of these Loyalists did not survive this winter. Reuben and his family nearly starved to death. Reuben later settled in Gagetown, Queens Co., New Brunswick with his family. He died there in July 1802. Only his wife is mentioned in his will. He is buried in Gagetown with his wife Mary.

FIRST GENERATION
(Wi-1) WILLIAM W. WILLIAMS (Reuben) was born either Dec. 1782 in Westchester Co., New York or 1784 in New Brunswick, Canada (born in New Brunswick, according to son John's death certificate). He married on Feb. 6, 1805 in Gagetown, Queens Co., New Brunswick to MARY VAN WART. She was born in 1783/86 in Kara, Kings Co., New Brunswick. She was the daughter of Jacob Van Wart(1761-1838) and Mary Fowler(1758/59-1851). Mary's parents were Loyalists. They were born in Westchester Co., New York and died in Tenant's Cove, Kings Co., New Brunswick, Canada. (see: Ancestors of William W. Williams and Mary Van Wart, at the end of this genealogy). In the summer of 1813, William and Mary moved to Houlton, Aroostook County, Maine. William built a log cabin on lot #20, at the top of Garrison Hill. They were the 13th family to settle there (and the first family who was not from Mass.). He bought land in the Williams College Grant in 1823, 1826, and 1828. Mary bought land in Houlton in 1820 and 1825. William became a member of the First Congregationalist Church of Houlton Plantation on Nov. 1, 1818. Later, he was a pat-time minister there and a chaplain for the Masonic Lodge. He appears in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census of Houlton. About this time, William decided that Houlton had become too crowded, so he and his family moved to Amity. He bought 400 acres of land in South Amity along Calais Road. William and his sons cleared the land on 4 lots and built a log cabin. Some of his sons took over these other lots and built their own houses there. William was a farmer. He is described as: 6 ft. tall, 165 lbs., with brown eyes. His wife Mary was 5 1/2 ft. tall and 125 lbs. In 1850, their property was valued at $1000. (The 1850 Federal Census also lists George Fletcher, age 13, born in Woodstock, Carleton Co., New Brunswick, living with this family.) Later in life, William and Mary moved to Hodgdon to be with some of their other children. William died Nov. 10, 1860, age 78 and was buried Nov. 18, 1860 in Hodgdon, Maine. Mary died Jan 5, 1861, age 75 and was buried next to her husband. Her probate record of Jan. 25, 1861 gave $4000 to her son Jared Williams. This was signed by her heirs: M.M. Williams, Bertha P. Jewell, Elizabeth C. Ham, Charles F. Williams, and A.G. Williams.
