Although designated Sheffield Record Book, there is a portion titled Town Record of Maugerville, and it is assumed that after that section ( where the oo0oo was placed by the original typist) is the records of Sheffield.

Not all death entries had dates recorded. Here again the assumption is that these event took place following the last date recorded, but that assumption may be incorrect. It would be wise to check neswpapers since they seem to be in the correct time period. They may well be Mr. Burpe's own family items, such as you will find recorded between the birth and death records.

Amoung the pages there can also be found items on stray cattle, as well as reports of earthquakes and hurricanes and unusually cold weather when the ice did not leave the river until 3rd. May.

James Johnson of the Parish of Sheffield certified that the following stray cattle were found on his premises and are now in his possession.

viz:  one year old stear, no horns, red with white face; two stear calves, brindle, half crop off of right ear; one heiffer calf, brindle, crop and slit on right ear.

Be it remembered that on the twenty first day of November in the year 1813 Robert Wason reported to me that James Tapley and himself had taken up a stray brown horse on the Commons in said Sheffield, age unknown, white face and both hind feet white.

This is to certify to any person whom it may concern that the subscriber has in his enclosure a stray stear (apparently rising two years old) Brown with some white in forehead and under the belly and some white on his tail the Ear mark is apparently a half crop on the upper side of the right ear and a crop and a slit on the left ear.

On the 29th day of January 1833 Thomas Harrison reported to me that about the 25th day of November last a stray heifer mostly black two small white spots on the left side marked with crop and slit in the left ear thinks it is a year old past but very small for that age.

Be it remembered that on the 26th day of November 1835 James McDonnal reported to me that he has in his enclosure 2 stray stears crop off the left ear and a slit in the right two heifers crop off the left Ear and half crop off the right.

Be it remembered that on the twenty first day of November in the year 1836 John Johnston reported to me he has in his inclosure a stray heifer rising two years deep red, ear mark crop off the left ear sloape the under side of the right.

In the year of our lord 1816 was the coldest summer ever known in the memory of man followed by a severe winter. One family with horse and sleigh or sled came from Burton to the meeting in Sheffield on the twenty first day of April 1817. A number of Horse team were passing on the river the next day, the main body of the ice in the river did not move any until the third day of May--on thursday morning the 15th of May a little after day break we had a shock of an earth quake.
