A History of Forest Glen United Baptist Church

(The following has been transcribed from a typed transcript kept by Florence and Elizabeth Corey, of the Scotch Colony. A notation on the original copy indicates it was written in 1968. There is no indication of who the author may have been.)

In 1876, the Christian pioneers of this section of the Tobique decided to form the Forest Glen Baptist Church. The church was organized on October 4th, 1876 with the following church leaders present: Rev. S. Burtt, Jacksonville; Lic. Charles Henderson, Richmond; Isaac Skinner and Deacon James Wright, Andover. There were 19 members at this time. Services were held in a school house.

Sunday School was held in 1877. In 1882, a decision was made to build a house suitable for church worship. It was decided to build the church at the mouth of the Colony Road on land donated by David Curry. Amos Smith, Rev. C. Henderson, David Curry, George Finnamore and Charles Porter were appointed to look after the business. Charles Roberts was the first to arrive at the church site with a load of lumber, followed closely by Jerry Hafford. ( a hand written note here states "Both families Catholic and closely related"). The first preaching service was held in the new church on August 11, 1884 with Rev. S. Burtt. At this time, it was voted to pay the minister $80 yearly, to be collected quarterly by subscription.

The first funeral service in the church was that of Sutton Armstrong, one of the founders of the church.

The church building was dedicated on August 1, 1886.

Victoria-Carleton quarterly meeting was held in Forest Glen in September, 1887, with many visiting pastors.

At this time, and for many years afterwards, a conference was held in the Church once a month, on Saturday, for fellowship and for discussion of business.

In November, 1887, interest in the community was very low and three women met at the church to pray for the work here.

In 1888, $70 was raised for the minister's salary with services being held every two weeks. At this time, the church was grouped with Andover.

In January, 1893, Young People's Meetings were organized. Meetings were held Sunday evening, following Church and Sunday School in the afternoon.

In 1894, a plot of ground was purchased from David Curry for the cemetery and was enclosed with a fence. At a church meeting at this time, it is interesting to note that it was resolved to have the church urge all non-resident members to join their nearest Baptist Church and any resident members absenting themselves from church for six months without giving sufficient reason, be dealt with at the pleasure of the church.

The years of the 1890's appeared to be rather prosperous for this Church. At one time in this period, the Sunday School had an enrollment of seventy with seven classes.

In 1905, Arthurette, Rowena and Forest Glen were grouped to form a field. A parsonage was purchased in 1915.

In 1911, quarterly meetings were again held at Forest Glen.

in 1913, the church building was repaired at a cost of $275 with Rev. Burnett as pastor.

By 1921, we find interest again very low with many moving away from the settlement.

Early church clerks were John Donaghey, Mrs. David Curry and later, Mrs. Arch Smith, who held this office for 35 years.

There have been 137 people join the church from 1876 to the present time.

In the last 40 years many changes have been made in the church and the cemetery. A basement was added around 1945 and new steps were later built, windows were rebuilt and opaque and coloured glass added. The basement walls have been finished, painted and cupboards built. A few years ago, a tile floor was laid and a carpet installed on the platform. We are now striving for an electric organ. Although we often find interest low as in years past, with God's help we shall continue in our efforts to keep the Church at Forest Glen a spiritual centre with the doors always open to those who wish to come.

1968. August.
