(Directions: The Upper Kintore Cemetery is located 31.4 km. south of the Village of Plaster Rock, traveling on Route 390 to Arthurette, crossing the bridge at Arthurette, and traveling on Route 109 a further 10 km., then turning left onto the Scotch Colony Road for 6.8 km. The cemetery is located just above the Upper Kintore United Church  on a hill overlooking the main road, across the road  from the Melvin Barclay farm)

 A Short History of Upper Kintore United Church

 

(the following has been copied from a church bulletin dated  September 1st, 1968, the 75th Anniversary and Memorial Service of Upper Kintore United Church. This copy of the bulletin had been preserved by Florence and Elizabeth Corey of the Scotch Colony)

 

1. The Church building was dedicated on September 3, 1893, by the Rev. Mr. Bruce of Saint John, N.B.. The Rev. A. Fulton Johnson labored in the Colony from July, 1890 to October, 1892, and Rev. Gordon Pringle served from Nov. 1892 until May, 1893, this being his first term of service in the Colony.

2. The elders present on Dedication Day were: - Thos. Watt, David Lowe, John McPhail, Donald Innes, Alex. Matheson, and Peter Ledingham.

3. At this Dedication Service a baby was baptized with the name of James Watt Barclay, son of Mr. & Mrs. George W. Barclay, by the Rev. Mr. Bruce. That infant is now the senior Elder of the Scotch Colony.

4. Miss Elsie Innes is the last living survivor, who came over from Scotland in May, 1874on S. S. Sidonian, with a passenger list of 219, who settled in Upper Kintore, Bon Accord and S. Tilley. She is now 95 years of age, and resides in a Rest Home, Portland, Oregon.

5. Mr. George W. Barclay served as Precentor at Upper Kintore from 1877 to 1906, and he used a tuning fork.

6. In 1908, Miss Rebecca Barclay began playing the organ. In 1922, she changed her name to Mrs. Rebecca Anderson, but continued playing the organ until now.

7. The 50th Anniversary was held September 6, 1943. The Rev. Dr. A. D. Archibald being preacher, and Rev. Dr. G. C. Pringle, Moderator. Elders present: George McPhail, J. W. Barclay, Sweton F. Mavor, and John Farquhar.

From the story of the past, the noble purposes, the weaknesses and the courage of our forefathers, we may learn the course we must take today, and gain courage and strength from their example, to "run the race set before us". "
