First Salisbury Baptist Cemetery
(Salisbury Parish, N.B.)

(contributed by Cleadie Barnett, CG(C))

The earliest burial ground to be established in the eastern end of Salisbury Parish. It is located across the Petitcodiac River from Salisbury Village - on the south side of the highway leading from the bridge over the Petitcodiac to the Pollet River settlements. Not many rods west of this cemetery, on the opposite side of the highway, was established in 1800, the earliest Baptist Church between Sackville and the St. John River. Rev. Joseph Crandall, who was ordained over this early Baptist log church in 18[00], was intered in this cemetery. The church supplanting this early log church was built on the south bank of the Petitcodiac, directly opposite [   ].  Later, a church was built in Salisbury village. The land on which the cemetery is located, was donated by Young Sherman, father-in-law of Rev. Joseph Crandall.
The following inscriptions were copied by J.E. Humphreys in May 1917, and again in Oct 1928.
(Note by copyist: Care was taken to procure all the inscriptions in this cemetery, although there may have been some few names of children omitted.)

(Note by typist, 1979: The original copy of these inscriptions was close typed. I have separated them by family names, but they may not be divided as to what is on a single stone.)

William soon became the most important man in this settlement. Without a doubt he was the first Justice of the Peace in the western end of Westmorland County. His name appeared on documents with the affix, Esq. as early as 1785. He died in the early 1820's. Although no monument to his memory could be found in this cemetery, there is every reason for believing that he was laid to rest in it, particularly, as after coming to the province, he became a strong adherent and active worker in the Baptist Church.)
