Blakney Pioneer Cemetery
(Salisbury Parish, N.B.)
(contributed by Cleadie Barnett,
CG(C))
This burial place is situated on
the northerly side of the main highway, about one and a
quarter miles down stream from Petitcodiac, on the land
granted to David Blakney in 1802. It is unquestionably the
earliest burial grounds established by English speaking
people in the western end of Salisbury Parish. On the property
of Ira B. Wright.
Although no tombstone in memory of
the Blakney family - the pioneers of the locality, are in
evidence, tradition is unanimous in designating this as
the last resting place of the pioneers of that family.
It is in an unkempt condition, but
owners of adjoining land have been careful in keeping it
enclosed with a fence for prevention of desecration by farm
animals. The ground is covered with a thick stand of second
growth birch trees.
The below tombstone records, collected
by J.E. Humphreys, in May 1917, comprises all that could
be found during a careful search.
