Mr. Murray's list was not alphabetized; this was done by the web site co-ordinater and any transcription or alphabetization errors are mine and will be corrected if you let me know. History of the cemetery:

"According to the late Mr. Burns' early 1930s research, the land for the cemetery was donated in 1830 by David Murray, who had a mercantile business in addition to his farming operations. The cemetery and the first church in the Little Shemogue area was located on a piece of the properly that Mr. Murray had acquired from the 1825 grant to Peter Roberts.

The church erected and dedicated there in 1831 by Rev. Alexander Clark DD (1795-1874) was of the Reformed Presbyterian faith. David Murray's descendants tell me that Mr. Murray provided the land on condition that anyone of any faith could be buried there, though most of those interred there were of the Presbyterian or United Church faiths.

This site served as the location of the Church until 1872, when a new Church was built 2-3 km east at Murray Corner, on land donated by Rev. Alex Robinson, who had served the pastoral charge from 1856-61. Unfortuately, this new church was destroyed by fire in 1922 with the result that the baptismal and death registers were believed to be lost in the fire.

As for the cemetery, it served as Little Shemogue's burial site until 1920, when the new Fernwood "perpetual care" cemetery was opened near Port Elgin. Following this, most community residents chose to be interred at Fernwood cemetery, because the Murray Corner cemetery was not being maintained and therefore had become overgrown with bushes and scrub trees.

As a result, in 1934, the late Rev. Dr. Lockhart, the local minister of that era spear-headed a community effort to restore the old cemetery, which saw the trees and grave mounds removed and a fence erected around the site. My Dad, Patrick J. Murray, who resides in Moncton was a part of that restoration effort.

Since the 1934 restoration, there have been nearly 40 burials, mostly spouses and children who were related to those who had been interred there earlier. The most recent interrment was in October 2000.

To bring the situation up to date, this old heritage cemetery is again in need of a restoration effort. Many of the headstones are frost-heaved and several have toppled over on the ground, while others need professional restoration or cleaning and letter re-painting.

In addition to the 320-325 known persons interred at Murray Corner, there were 38 "unknown" grave sites identified by grave mounds at the time of the 1934 restoration. In checking Mr. Burns' 1933 history, it appears that many of these unknown graves could be the early settlers, whose families either could not afford headstone or the graves were marked with a wooden cross or stone that had detiorated over the span of 100 years."
