Raymond William Abeyounis
WASHINGTON, NC - Raymond William "Ray" Abeyounis, age 58, of 217 Hudnell Street in Washington, NC died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at Beaufort County Hospital. A graveside service was held Friday, December 30, 1 pm, at Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Phillip Hayes officiating. He was a warehouse attendant at PCS Phosphate in Aurora, member of Mother of Mercy Catholic Church and golf pro. He is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home; three stepsons, Linwood Ray Wallace of Raleigh, Dustin William Wallace and Matthew Carter Wallace, both of Hampton, VA. James A. Acklin, Sr.
Mr. James A. Acklin, Sr., 56, of 255 Elks Trailer Park, Chocowinity, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Temple of Jesus Christ Church United with Bishop James Woolard officiating and Elder William Acklin, eulogist. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington. Mr. Acklin was born Feb. 11, 1952, the son of Lillie Dennis Acklin and the late Robert W. Acklin, Sr. He attended Chocowinity High School and later earned a GED. In 1996, he married Bessie James, who survives. He was formerly employed by Britthaven Nursing Home, Washington. Survivors include three daughters, Tammy Acklin of West Palm Beach, Fla., Alberta Acklin of Greenville and Jennifer Gibbs of Washington; two sons, James A. Acklin, Jr. of Greenville and William Andrews of Chocowinity; one brother, William Acklin of Greenville; two sisters, Catherine Wooten and Martha Acklin, both of Chocowinity and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Acklin Jr. and Herman L. Acklin and one sister, Mary Carter. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, William Acklin, 1268 Twisting Creek, Pactolus community, Greenville. Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Harry Linwood Adams
Harry Linwood Adams, 81, of Route 1, a retired farmer, died Sept. 23, 1992, in his home. Mr. Adams was born in Beaufort County. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6088; Belhaven American Legion Post 0249; Disabled American Veterans, Beaufort County Chapter; Washington Moose Lodge; the board of directors of the Beaufort County Home; the Beaufort County Board of Elections; and Tau Tribe 18 Improved Order of Red Men. He was an Army veteran and received the Bronze and Silver stars and the Purple Heart. He had been the widower of Margaret Wood Adams. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Mills Adams; two daughters, Gale A. Nichelson of Virginia Beach and Barbara A. Adams of Raleigh; two sons, John Q. Adams of Snow Hill and Harry Adams Jr. of Washington; three stepsons, Russell D. Whichard of Chocowinity, and James D. Whichard and Joseph R. Whichard, both of Washington; two sisters, Nell Hagood of Burlington and Hida Reeks of Raleigh; three grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. A funeral was held Friday in Paul Funeral Home by the Rev. Fred Fordham and the Rev. Gary Fulton. Burial was in Yeatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the residence. John T. Adams
Mr. John T. Adams, 88, of 708 Boston Ave., Washington, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington, with the Rev. Edward Moultrie Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington. Mr. Adams was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 20, 1918. He was the son of the late Shade and Matilda Adams. He attended the Beaufort County schools. He was married to Nancy Bowen Adams, who preceded him in death. He later married Evelena Swinton Adams, who survives. He worked at the Washington Daily News and the Moose Lodge before retiring from Beaufort County Hospital. He was a member of Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington, where he served on the steward board and sang in the choir. Survivors include two stepsons, James M. Swinton of Baltimore, Md., and Anthony Swinton of Kansas City, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, John H. Adams. Mable Pippin Adams
VIRGINIA BEACH - Mable Pippin Adams, 91, a resident of Norfolk for more than 40 years, and had been living at Westminster-Canterbury of Virginia Beach for more than 15 years, died Wednesday Feb. 28, 1996, in the health care center. She was born in Washington, N.C., and was the widow of J. Royden Adams. She was a former teacher and school principal, and at her retirement in 1972 was on the Educational Administration Staff of the Norfolk School System. Mrs. Adams was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. She attended Peace College in Raleigh, N.C., the University of Virginia, and graduated from James Madison University. Survivors include a sister, Margaret P. Davis of Tucson, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Barbee M. Gyourko of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Pippin of Rockingham, N.C., and Margaret Pippin of Akron Ohio; two nephews, Jefferson C. Davis Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and James A. Pippin Jr. of Columbus, Ga.; a niece, Patricia Minnich of El Cajon, Calif.; three step-grandchildren, Marsha G. Cichanski of Peachtree City, Ga., Joseph E. Gyourko III of Swarthmore, Pa., and Andrew Royden Gyourko of Springfield, Va.; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel in Westminster-Canterbury of Virginia Beach. Burial was on Saturday in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Fellowship Fund of Westminster-Canterbury of Virginia Beach, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, 23455. Monnie Adams, Jr.
Monnie Adams, Jr., 76, of Hatteras, N.C., died Wednesday, February 21, 2001, in a Chesapeake, Va., hospital. Mr. Adams, born in Chocowinity, N.C., retired in 1990, after 41 years of service, as vice president of sales for C.F. Sauer Company in Richmond, Va. After visiting for over 30 years, he moved to Hatteras Island in 1990. He was a member of the Hatteras Marlin Club, was an avid fisherman and had a close bond to the Hatteras Charter Fishing Fleet. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Adams was the son of the late Monnie Adams Sr. and the late Caddie Moore Adams. Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Barbara Burriss "Bobbie" Adams of the residence; a step-daughter, Katy Ellison of Hatteras, N.C.; a stepson, Crate Ellison of Anderson, S.C.; a daughter, Lynn Adams Winfree of Richmond, Va.; a son, Thomas Nelson Adams of Hampton Roads, Va.; four granddaughters, Leslie and Rebecca Adams, and Kristin and Brooke Winfree; and a sister, Betty Muller of Powells Point, N.C. Funeral services will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church on Friday, February 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Holt Clarke officiating. Burial will be in Hatteras. Maj. James J. Ainsworth, Sr.
WASHINGTON - Major James J. Ainsworth, Sr., USMC, retired, age 66, a resident of 41 Canal St., Bayside Shores, Chocowinity, NC, died at his home Thursday, October 14, 1999. Graveside funeral services, with full military honors, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 1999 in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. The family will receive friends at Paul Funeral Home Tuesday, October 12, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. Major Ainsworth was born in Seattle, Washington on November 13 1932, the son of the late William and Amy Wallace Ainsworth. He was married to the former Margaret Glyn who survives. He was a Retired Major in the United States Marine Corps with 30 years of dedicated and gallant service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He had received among many others, the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Commendation Cross of Gallantry with Palm. After his military career he worked with Ryder Truck Rental of Rocky Mount before moving to Beaufort County in 1983 where he worked as the Diesel Mechanic Instructor at Beaufort County Community College. Major Ainsworth also volunteered as an AARP Tax Volunteer for five years and was a Director with the Washington Duplicate Bridge Club. Major Ainsworth is survived by his wife, Margaret, and their three children: son, James J. Ainsworth, Jr. and wife Glennie of Raleigh; daughters, Carolyn Miller and husband Martin of Emmitsburg, Maryland and Karen Brown and husband Richard of Apex, NC; and three grandchildren. Concetta Albera
Concetta “Connie” Albera, 93, died at her home in Bath on April 28, 2006. The daughter of Joseph and Erasima Cantone, Connie was born on May 14, 1912 in Brooklyn, New York. She married James Lewis Albera in 1934. Connie graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in mathematics and taught fifth grade for seventeen years in public schools in Paramus, New Jersey. During retirement in Boca Raton, Florida, Connie and Jim became involved in the Loxahatchee Nature Center and the Audubon Society. Together with her husband, Connie hosted Roger Tory Peterson on a bird-watching trip in the Everglades. With Jim she explored much of the United States, where Jim photographed birds and she photographed wildflowers. When her husband died, Connie moved to Bath. A twenty-year resident of Bath, she was a two-term town commissioner, past president of the Bath Garden Club and Circle Four of the Bath Christian Church, one of the founders of the Prime Timers, and an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle. Connie is survived by her two sons, Ronnie and his wife Vera of Denver, Pennsylvania, and Jim and his wife Emily Marsha of Bath. Connie is also survived by four grandchildren, Charlie, Rona (and fiancee Joe), John (and wife Anna), and Wayne Albera; two great-grandchildren, Alissa and Charlane Albera, and a host of loving friends. A gracious and optimistic person, Connie welcomed friends and family into her home. Many years ago Connie and her husband Jim decided that they would not have a formal viewing or funeral. Family and friends will gather at a later time to celebrate Connie’s life. Connie and Jim were both lovers of nature and the family suggests that each of us take a moment to reflect on our natural surroundings and the beauty of God’s creation by smelling a flower, watching a bird or planting a tree in Connie’s memory. Andrew Rothemere Alcox
Mr. Andrew Rothemere “Andy” Alcox, age 83 a former resident of 190 Washington Harbor died Friday January 19, 2007 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Washington. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday January 21, 2007 at the First Christian Church of Washington officiated by Dr. Michael Price. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Cecil D. Smith, Johnny Bailey, Lex Mann, Stanley Lander, Fred Barrett and David Weatherly will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Alcox was born in Hyde County on December 4, 1923 son of the late Andrew Rowe Alcox and the late Rosa Harris Alcox. He graduated from the Sladesville School and continued his education at Kings Business College. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Hare who preceded him in death on April 2, 1997. Mr. Alcox worked in the Fertilizer business and retired in 1995 from the Blount-Midgette Company. He was a member of First Christian Church where he was involved in many church activities, a member of Washington Lodge 675 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and Washington York Rite. Mr. Alcox volunteered at the Beaufort County Hospital and Meals on Wheels as long as his health permitted. Survivors include a daughter: Diana A. Tew and her husband Grant of Washington; two grandsons: Grant A. Smith of Greenville, NC and Mark M. Smith of Wilmington. Mr. Alcox was preceded in death by a brother: Leonard A. Alcox. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Saturday January 20, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home of Mr. Alcox’s daughter: Diana Tew, Washington, NC. Bettye Teresa Alexander
Bettye Teresa Alexander of the 1600 block of Pantigo Lane, died Sept. 2, 2004. Born in Washington, N.C., she was a member of St. Mark AME Church, Virginia Beach, and Delta Sorority, Virginia Beach Chapter. She was a graduate of Elizabeth City State University. Survivors include her husband, James I. Alexander of Chesapeake; a daughter, Ife A. Caines of Suffolk; a son, Salih C. Alexander of Portsmouth; two sisters, Annette Knox of Englewood, N.J. and Dr. Joyce Martin of Groton, Conn.; four brothers, Edward Dowdy of Westchester, N.Y., Regonald Dowdy of New York, William Dowdy of Wilmington, N.C. and George Dowdy of Washington state; three grandchildren, Jamie Cains, Naomi Cains and Clyton Cains; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and mother-in-law, Gladys Goodwin. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in St. Mark AME Church by the Rev. Anna L. Briley. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A wake will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church. Ellen Johnson Alexander
Ms. Ellen Alexander, 47, of Russell Street, Augusta, Ga. passed away Sunday, March 27, 2005 at University Hospital. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Johnson and is survived by her mother, Mildred Johnson of Augusta; her brother, Val Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Franny, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; a niece, Nita Johnson Lee (Steven); her nephew, DuVal Johnson, III, and one great nephew, Macon Patrick Lee, as well as a host of other family and friends. Ms. Alexander was born in Washington, North Carolina on August 21, 1957 and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Salem College with a degree in English and received both Masters and Specialist Degrees from Augusta State University in Educational Leadership. Ms. Alexander was writing her dissertation to complete her Doctorate at Georgia Southern University. Ellen was a teacher for many years including two years spent teaching at the Marist Brothers School in Kobe, Japan. She was employed by the Richmond County Board of Education as a teacher and administrator and was most recently serving as an assistant principal at Glenn Hills High School. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 5:00 pm at Thomas Poteet & Sons, Davis Rd. with visitation to follow afterward. Joseph Franklin Alexander
After a battle with cancer, Joseph Franklin (Frank) Alexander passed away January 26, 2008 at his home near Austin Texas, surrounded by his family. Frank was born on March 3rd, 1941 in Edenton, N.C .to Alton and Elsie Alexander. After graduating from John A Holmes H.S. in 1962 he joined the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany and Texas and served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. Frank retired SSG from the Army at Ft Sam Houston Texas in 1981 and returned to North Carolina. Frank always wanted to go back to Texas so in 2001 he relocated to Austin Texas and became a life member of the MOC 33 and VFW Post 3377 in Manchaca, Texas. Frank was preceded in death by his father, Alton, and his eldest son, Christopher Leon. He is survived by his mother Elsie and stepfather James Walker of Columbia N.C.; wife Glenna of Austin, Texas; and children: Robert, wife Tammy, children Corey, Sarah, and Hannah Alexander of Virginia Beach, Va.; Karen, husband Andy and son Andrew Wende of Buda, Texas; Angela, husband Jeffery, and children Amber and Brett Lilley of Washington, N.C.; CJ, wife Alice, and daughter Virginia Tynch of Greenville, N.C.; stepdaughter Anne, husband Al and children Clair and Joe Ward of Edenton, N.C.; sisters Joan Pickell of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Bertha Martin of Winston Salem, N.C.. Frances Williamson Allcox
Mrs. Frances Williamson Allcox, age 83, a former resident of Edenton and Washington and currently of Zebulon, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. A memorial service will be held at the Wendell Baptist Church, Sunday, September 2, 2007 at 12:15 pm following the morning worship service, conducted by Rev. Eddie Brackett. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am, Monday, September 3, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington conducted by Dr. Phillip Hayes. Mrs. Allcox was the daughter of the late Percy and Mary Ola Wood Williamson. She was married to Rev. Sherwood Allcox, who preceded her in death in December of 1993. For the past several years, Mrs. Allcox had resided at Guardian Care in Zebulon. Survivors include two sons, Sherwood E. Allcox and his wife, Peggy of Clinton, Irvin Lee Allcox and his wife, Debra of Wendell; a daughter, Sherry Allcox Swartout of Panama City Beach, FL; a brother, Hubert Williamson of Wendell; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Daniel Gilbert Allen
CHESAPEAKE - Daniel Gilbert Allen departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 5, 2008. He was born in Washington, N.C., although he lived most of his life in Chesapeake. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Ira J. Allen Sr. and Verda B. Allen. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marion S. Allen; one son, Terry W. Allen and his wife Courtney; seven grandchildren, Christian Allen; three month old twins, Tucker Daniel Allen and Lucy Noel Allen, Taylor Blanchard, Tanner Blanchard, Tessa Blanchard and Tally Blanchard. He is also survived by three brothers, Ira J. Allen Jr. and his wife Ann, A.D. Allen and his wife Jacqueline, Timothy B. Allen and his wife Vickie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors include five godchildren, Melissa Combs, Tonya Hoffman, Kelly McAuliffe, N. Dean Combs III and Meggan Woolard. Dan's family and friends were the joy of his life. He spent some of his happiest moments with his grandchildren and friends. The birth of the twins in October was one of the highlights of his life. Mr. Allen co-owned and operated for 30 years a steel construction business, I. J. Allen & Son. Since 1990, he has co-owned and operated Magnum Tower Associates. Mr. Allen was a member of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be conducted by Dr. Ralph Herbert in Great Bridge Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. today followed by a reception at the church. Daryl Ross Allen
Mr. Daryl Ross Allen, age 49, a resident of 34475 US Hwy 264 East, Belhaven, NC died Saturday September 15, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday September 18, 2007 at the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church officiated by Stanly Allen. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery in the Pungo Community of Pantego. Roddy Selby, Mike Respess, Felton “Rocky” Allen, Jr., Robby Cuthrell, Ricky Radcliffe and Robbie Slade will serve as pallbearers. Daryl was born in Beaufort County on March 31, 1958 son of the late Larry Dorn Allen Sr., and the late Leora Annette Crocker Allen. He was a 1976 graduate of Pungo Christian Academy. Daryl married the former Wanda Sue Morris on September 11, 1977 who survives. He was a self-employed truck driver who later worked in the trucking field as a dispatcher with the Bowen Company of Belhaven. Daryl was a member of the Pantego Ruritan Club and a member of Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a past Deacon. Surviving along with Daryl’s wife, Wanda of the home are two daughters: Carol Beth Allen of Raleigh and Crystal Allen Davis and her husband Clint of Belhaven; three brothers: Larry Dorn Allen, Jr. of Rising Fawn, GA, Gary Keith Allen of Scranton and Jeryl Craig Allen of Pantego; a sister: Janalea Allen Adams of Blounts Creek and a special friend and “Kidney Brother” Robbie Slade of Pantego. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday September 17, 2007 at the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church and at other times at the home. Hampton Allen
Mr. Hampton “Hampy” Allen III, age 48, a resident of 24558 U.S. Highway 264 East, Pantego, died Friday, September 21, 2007. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Coltrain Family Cemetery, located behind Mr. Allen’s home, conducted by Jon Langley and Lee Blackburn. The following will serve as active pallbearers: George Baker, Conway Carawan, Harry Giles, David Hoggard, Robert Lowe, Al Sawyer, Timmy Stotesbury and Keenan Woolard. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Armstrong, Lloyd Harris, Chris Phillips, Stephen Ruark, Toby Tetterton and Mack Wallace. Mr. Allen was born in Anson County on December 13, 1958. He was the son of Hampton B. Allen, Jr. and Judy Estridge Allen. Mr. Allen graduated from John A. Wilkinson High School. He was self employed as a commercial fisherman and bulldozer operator. Mr. Allen was a member of the Wilkinson Church of Christ. On June 14, 1985, Mr. Allen married the former Connie Coltrain, who survives. Survivors include his wife, Connie Coltrain Allen of the home; his daughter, Kasey Elizabeth Allen of the home; his son, Tyler Bennett Allen of the home; his parents, Hamp B. Allen and Judy Allen of Florence, SC.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jimmie and Sylvia Coltrain of Pantego; and his brothers-in-law, Todd Coltrain and his wife Amy of Pinetown, Ronnie Coltrain and his wife Beverly, of Pantego, and Greg Coltrain and his wife, Robin of Belhaven. Mr. Leamon Harding Allen, Sr., age 86, a resident of 1144 Pike Road, Pantego, NC died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven, NC. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Union Grove Church of Christ officiated by Rupert Wallace, Scott Askew and Dr. Denny Prewitt. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery. Deacons of Union Grove Church of Christ will serve as pallbearers and Elders of the church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Allen was born in Beaufort County on October 25, 1920, son of the late Daniel William Allen and the late Etha Rose Allen. He was a graduate of the former Pantego High School. Mr. Allen served his country in the US Air Force during World War II. He married the former Dorothy S. Carowan on October 21, 1944 who preceded him in death on April 17, 1982. Later he married the former Mavis McKinney Paul on January 2, 1994 who survives. Mr. Allen was a farmer who specialized in the hog producing field and raised chickens and grain. He was a mentor to many who wanted to start a career in the hog producing industry. Mr. Allen was a member of Union Grove Church of Christ. He dearly loved his church and devoted much time and energy to it including being a member of the deacon and elder boards. Survivors include Mr. Allen’s wife: Mavis of the home; a son: Leamon H. Allen, Jr. and his wife Martha of Pantego and Elaine A. Respess and her husband Gary of Pantego; two step children: Ken Paul and his wife Beth of Richmond, VA and Kathy Waters and her husband Frank of Pantego; six grandchildren: Julie A. Harris and her husband Eddie Bryant, Jenny A. Brown and her husband Gary, Leamon H. Allen III and his wife Julianna, Wendy R. Woolard and her husband Ashley, Hope R. Tetterton and her husband Derick and Erin Respess; six step grandchildren: Julie Perry and her husband Stacy, Kristy Paul, Kendrick Paul, Tracy Copeland and her husband Mark, Wayne Waters and his wife Cara and Todd Waters and his wife Betsy; eight great grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by four brothers: Owen Allen, Kermit Allen, Willie Allen and Jasper Allen and one sister: Fannie A. Harris. Mr. Raymond Bruce Allen, age 37, of 789 Hwy. 99 N., Pantego died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Britthaven of Washington. Raymond was born in Beaufort Co. on February 23, 1970 to Bonner and Mary Hodges Allen, who survive. He graduated from Pungo Christian Academy and went on to earn his degree in Business and Investment from East Carolina University. He was a farmer with his family, he loved fishing and hunting and was a great fan of tractor pulls. Mr. Floyd Taylor Alligood Sr., age 75, a resident of 392 Old Bath Highway, died on Monday December 4, 2006 at his home. Mr. Alligood worked for the North Carolina Highway Maintenance Department for thirty-two years until his retirement in 1994. Mr. Alligood was a member of Alligood Church of God. Jean Corey Alligood
Mrs. Jean Corey Alligood, 68, went to meet her maker on December 17, 2006, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Beaufort County on February 21, 1938, the daughter of the late Robert and Beatrice Corey. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Mack Alligood, brothers, James Corey and Ira “Skinny” Corey, and sisters, Thelma Beacham and Jesse Kelly. Jean had a will to live life to the fullest like no one you have ever met and always spoke what was on her mind. She worked many jobs during her years in Washington, her last as a cosmetologist at Hot Locks. She was a member of Wanoca Presbyterian Church in Washington. Kathleen Boyd Woolard Alligood, 88, of Washington, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and widow of George Woolard and Etheridge Alligood, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington. She was born to the late John Richard and Martha Elizabeth Woolard Boyd on August 16, 1918. Kathleen spent most of her life as a resident of Slatestone Road and more recently of The Village and Britthaven Nursing Home. Her family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Britthaven for their care and compassion over the last several months. Kathleen is survived by two sons, Bobby Dale and Danny Ray Woolard; one daughter, Anna Kay Whitley and husband, Mitchell, all of Washington; one stepson, Neil C. Alligood; one stepdaughter, Sonja Alligood Tuning; grandsons, Shane (Kara), Stephen (Debbie), Stewart (Anna) Whitley; granddaughter, Lisa Woolard Narron (Brad); great-grandsons, Bradley and Jesse Narron; Courtland and Micah Whitley, and great-granddaughters, Katie Narron and Josie Keech and one sister, Helen Alligood. Kathleen was strongly devoted to God and her family. She graduated from Bath High School in 1937. She was a lifelong member of Rosemary Church of Christ and the Rosemary Ladies Aid. She dearly loved to cook, crochet, embroider, garden and read and was a member of CBH Lodge and DAV, serving as an officer, as long as health permitted. Mae Arnold Hardison Alligood
Mrs. Mae (Arnold) Hardison Alligood, age 90, slipped gracefully into eternal rest on Tuesday January 9, 2007. She was a lifelong resident of Washington. A graveside celebration of life will be held at the graveside in Oakdale Cemetery on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. Mrs. Alligood was born in Creswell, NC on September 12, 1916, to John and Janie Furlough. Her mother died in 1917 during the flu epidemic and she was raised by the late Dave and Sarah Arnold. She was married on November 7, 1934 to Audrey Hardison who died on August 5th, 1966. On May 17, 1967, she married Leroy Hilton Alligood who also preceded her in death on July 18, 1992. Mrs. Alligood was an avid homemaker and gardener. During her first marriage, she raised four beautiful children, all who still survive. She was a past president and a member of the Orr Lodge #104’s Order of the Eastern Star. As a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Washington, she dedicated over 50 years of service as a choir member and prelude organist. She shared her musical talents with Oden Funeral Home and Paul Funeral Home as an organist and singer for over 20 years. In her later years, she moved her church membership to the First Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, D. Thomas Hardison of Durham, NC, three daughters; Sister Jane Hardison of Manhasset, NY and currently of the home, Miriam Hardison Carter Phillips and husband Preston L. Phillips of Byron, GA, Teresa Hardison Smith and her husband Danny Ray Smith of Washington; a step-daughter, Anna Alligood Gray and her husband Dr. Frank Gray of Knoxville, TN; eight grandchildren, Thomas M. “Ty” Carter, Etta Carter Oliver, Daniel Lee Smith, Jacklyn Michelle Smith, Preston Lee Phillips, Jr., Elisa Lynn Phillps, David P. Mrs. Mary Louise Bright Alligood, 39, formerly of Washington and Winterville, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at Greenfield Place Nursing Home of Greenville. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Alligood was born in Beaufort County on June 15, 1968. She was the daughter of Gracie Banks Bright and the late James Anson Bright Sr. She attended the Washington City Schools. Before her disability, she was self employed in the house cleaning business in Nags Head. Survivors include three sons, Christopher Bright of Washington, Derrik Bright of Pamlico County, and Timothy Cieslik of Buffalo, N.Y.; two sisters, Brenda Daughton and Shirley Bright, both of Washington; two brothers, James Bright Jr. of Missouri, and Jimmy Bright of Bath and one grandchild. Maxine Wright Alligood
Mrs. Maxine Wright Alligood, age 77, a resident of 105 S. Eden Drive, Washington, died Friday morning, June 30, 2006 at her home following an extended illness. Maxine always had a smile on her face and kind words to share with everyone she encountered. She was funny, smart, loving, and had a heart of gold. Along with God, family was her top priority. Mrs. Alligood was born in Scotland County, on March 23, 1929, daughter of the late Harvey and Ethel Wright. On February 15, 1953, she married Marvin Brown Alligood. Mrs. Alligood was employed with Sampson’s Manufacturing for 42 years and later with Beaufort County Schools for several more years. She was an active member of the Beaver Dam Church of Christ, the Charitable Brotherhood Lodge, the Beaufort County Grange and Beaufort County School Nutrition Association. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday July 2, 2006 at the Beaver Dam Church of Christ, officiated by Tony Krantz and Dr. Robert Cayton. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mr. Steve Hollis Alligood, age 51, a former resident of Washington, N.C., died Thursday evening at his home, 1369 Botetourt Gardens, Norfolk, Va. Mr. Alligood earned a bachelor's degree in teaching from East Carolina University, a master's degree in education from Old Dominion University and an education specialist degree from George Washington University. He was employed 29 years with the Virginia Beach school system as a teacher and principal of the Hermitage Elementary School. Surviving are his mother, Mabel H. Thelma Elizabeth Cox Alligood
Mrs. Thelma Elizabeth Cox Alligood, age 89, of 1402 North Market St. Washington, NC died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington, NC. Mrs. Alligood was born in Beaufort County on July 16, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Floyd McCoy and Hallie Brooks Cox. On April 14, 1944, Mrs. Alligood married the love of her life Earl Eugene Alligood who, along with her brother Floyd McCoy Cox Jr., preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. Alligood also had a son, Earl Eugene Alligood Jr., who died soon after birth. Along with her husband, Mrs. Alligood owned and operated Pam’s Soda Shop from 1955 to 1966. During that time, many special friends and acquaintances were made. Later, she was co-owner/operator of Cox’s Shoe Store and would go on to enjoy working at Stewart’s Jewelry Store for many years. Due to her work at the Soda Shop, she developed a staunch aversion to vegetable soup but she always maintained a love for chocolate. Sometimes she felt like a green bean. Though her brother owned a stable, she was not fond of horses. She was, on the other hand, a self-proclaimed “water duck.” She loved people and was affectionately called “Thelma Lou” by many. Mrs. Thelma Jefferson Alligood age 58, a resident of 8798 Hwy 264 East, Washington died Saturday June 16, 2007 at her home. William Carroll Alligood
William Carroll “W.C.” Alligood passed away on Monday, November 13, 2006 at the age of 45. W.C. was born in Alameda County, California. He graduated from Washington High School in 1979 and then served his country in the United States Navy. In 1983, he returned to eastern North Carolina to stay. Here he created a beautiful family, surrounded himself with loving friends and enjoyed the world that God created. In March of 1993, W.C. met Jennifer Skvarla and they began a wonderful life together. W.C. was an enthusiastic bundle of energy who could light up a room just by entering. His passion for living was disarming and exuded from him in his work, his play, and his love for those around him. W.C. was an entrepreneur who helped found and operate multiple businesses, most recently Custom Creations of Washington where he loved to create custom boat cabinetry. He enjoyed fishing and “wrassling,” playing games and telling jokes, and could dance from sunup until sundown. He even threw his enormous energies into fighting the proposed Outlying Landing Field; he will be sorry not to see it defeated himself. W.C. was an incredibly compassionate and loving father, husband, and son. In addition to his parents Daniel Larry Alligood and Ada Louise Jarvis Alligood, W.C. is survived by his brother Daniel Larry Alligood; his daughter Ashley Denise Henderson and her husband Brett; his son Brenton Carroll Alligood; his stepdaughter Teresa Goerss VanStaalduinen and her husband Mark; his stepdaughter Allison Goerss Hill and her husband Duncan; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Gloria Gibbs Ambrose, 71, formerly of 396 Bayshore Drive, Chocowinity, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Beaufort County Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Thomas W. Entwistle and Marie Lucy Doino Entwistle. She was a graduate of Riverhead High School in Long Island, NY. She had been a resident of Beaufort County for approximately 40 years. She was married to Edward W. Ambrose, who survives. Mrs. Ambrose was employed in retail sales as a Tupperware Manager for many years. She was a member of Mother of Mercy Catholic Church and The Altar Society. Survivors include her husband, Edward W. Ambrose; her children, Patricia Ann Gibbs Woolard and her husband, Marty, and Floyd Earl Gibbs, III; two brothers, Joseph Entwistle and his wife, Jane, and Thomas Entwistle, Jr. and his wife Anne; one grandaughter, Amanda Woolard Crockrell, and one great-grandaughter, Caitlyn Raine Crockrell. Helen Moore Ambrose, 62, died Dec. 24, 1998, at Sentara Bayside Hospital. Born in Washington, N.C., she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Reginald D. She married Aubrey Wendell Ambrose on June 15, 1936 who preceded her in death on April 12, 1988. Mrs. Ambrose was a resident of Beaufort County at the time of her death. The Ambroses lived in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia prior to returning to Washington, N.C., in 1963. She was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ. Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Ambrose Kastle of Jacksonville and a son, Edward Wendell Ambrose of Chocowinity; four grandsons, four step-grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. William F. Ambrose
Dr. William F. Ambrose, retired minister, age 80, a resident of 3542 Market Street Ext., Washington died at home on Thursday, May 3, 2007. A funeral service will be held at the Old Ford Church of Christ at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 6, 2007, officiated by Rupert Wallace and Eddie Bowen. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Richard Young, Bill Ambrose, Terry Black, Heber Coltrain, Ellis Sawyer, Richard Gerard, Richard Gerard, Jr. and Danny Turner will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be area Church of Christ/Christian ministers and the Williamston Chapter of AMVETS # 227. Dr. Ambrose, son of the late Marvin Luther Ambrose and the late Grace Fenton Ambrose, was born in Newport News, VA on June 9, 1926. The family moved to the Old Ford Community in 1940. He graduated from Washington High School in 1944 and immediately entered the Army Air Corp where he was trained as an aerial photographer. He was assigned to the famous Manhattan Project, serving in Operations Crossroads in the South Pacific, the part of the Manhattan Project assigned to the testing of the atomic and hydrogen bombs. Many of the photographs of those detonations were made by Dr. Ambrose. Dr. Ambrose was a graduate of Atlanta Christian College in East Point, GA. He also attended East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Barton College, the University of Colorado and the Baptist Theological Seminary in Rockford, IL, the Medical College of Virginia and Virginia Tech. He also graduated from the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering. In May 1982, Atlanta Christian College awarded him the Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree for his outstanding service to the church and to his alma mater for which he served many years on the Board of Trustees. Dr. Ambrose was ordained into the ministry by the Old Ford Church of Christ on January 22, 1950. His ministry began with the East Tenth Street Church of Christ, Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was minister of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Gasburg, VA for thirty-two years. During his years in Virginia, he was President of the Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce, and part owner of Thisuldu Golf Course and Ja-Geri Farm Stables where he raised, trained and showed Tennessee Walking Horses. An avid bird hunter, he enjoyed a reputation for raising and training some of the best bird dogs on the eastern seaboard. One of the dogs he trained was on the “Today Show” giving a demonstration of a properly trained bird dog. His numerous hobbies were his passion. They included fishing, photography, pigeon racing and woodworking for which he was awarded The Golden Hammer Award by Mechanics Illustrated for his construction of a 21-foot cabin cruiser. In later years, he became a custom knife maker and engraver having attended Montgomery County Community College to study under the top engraver in the country. Because of health concerns, Dr. Ambrose retired in June 1982 and returned to this area in 1984. Even though retired, he served five local churches and one in Virginia as long as his health permitted. Up until his death, he was serving as the Chaplain of the Williamston Chapter of AMVETS # 227. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Geraldine (Geri) Woolard Ambrose. Mrs. Joanne Slabey Andersen, 69, of 507 Potomac Drive, Chocowinity, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Cypress Landing Bay Club with interim rector Father Charles Kettlewell officiating. Mrs. Andersen was born in Rye, N.Y., on Oct. 12, 1937. She was the daughter of the late John Licoln Slabey and Catherine Mary Dacey Slabey. On Aug. 29, 1959, she married Rolf J. Andersen, who survives. She was office manager for a medical company. She had been a resident of Cypress Landing for six years. She was a member of the Cypress Landing Red Hatters Chapter, a member of the Women’s Club of Cypress Landing and the Cypress Landing Golf Club. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Beaufort County. Survivors include one daughter, Karen A. Noggle of Newton, N.J.; one son, John E. He loved sailing and was a member of the Royal Madras Yacht Club. On November 18, 2000, Mr. Andrew married the former Angela Rowland, who survives. Virginia W. Andrews, 83, of the 2900 block of E. Malden Ave., died May 17, 1998, in her residence. She resided in Norfolk with her nephew, William T. Annie Mae Lilley Angell
Annie Mae Lilley Angell was born September 22, 1920 in Pantego, North Carolina to Jordan and Minnie Alligood Lilley. She passed away surrounded by friends and loved ones, after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Silsbee Oaks Health Center. Ann was raised in Beaufort, North Carolina at St. Paulis Episcopal School because of the death of her mother when she was seven years old. She spent summers and later teen years in Washington, North Carolina with her family. She was a welder in the Norfolk, Virginia shipyard during World War II. She met Billy James Angell while working at the White House (introduced by sister, Jennie Angell (and they married on February 9, 1947. She was a resident of Beaumont, Texas from 1944 until she had to be moved to Silsbee Oaks due to her struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy James Angell in December of 1999. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Lilley and Lewis "Buddy" Lilley both of Washington, North Carolina; two sisters, Ercel Dillon of Belhaven, North Carolina and Elsie Woolard of Washington, North Carolina; brothers-in-law, Holland Angell, Monferd Angell and Thomas Angell all of Beaumont, Lewis Dillon of Belhaven, North Carolina; and sisters-in-law, Mildred Lilley of Washington, North Carolina, Ethel Angell of Beaumont, and Girland Angell Dotson. Survivors included her daughter, Jennifer Angell Chapman and her husband, Randy; granddaughter, Tara Angell Travis Revia and husband, Kris all of Beaumont; son, Michael Paul Toups and his wife, Cathy of Hearne, Texas; sisters-in-law, Jennie Angell and Irene Angell both of Beaumont, Zola Lilley of Washington, North Carolina; brother-in-law, Lester Woolard of Washington, North Carolina; step grandsons, Shawn Chapman and his son, Jordan of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Brandon Chapman and family of Beaumont; and numerous nieces and nephews. We had spent a wonderful Thanksgiving with family at Aunt Jennie’s with Mother laughing and enjoying those she loved. By Christmas, she had begun to weaken and was never able to fully recover. Mother loved life and lived it to the fullest. We often had a house full of kids and she loved every minute of it, especially sharing her wisdom and wit. She worked at Unique Gift Corner for more than twenty years, where she enjoyed sharing her compassion, generosity and love of God. She worked there until she was 76 years old and left only after her health kept her from working. Mama never had to “preach” or tell you what a strong Christian she was because she lived it every minute of every day. In times that many of us could never have endured, her faith brought her through and always made her stronger. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at Westminster Presbyterian Church followed by burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 N Major Drive, Beaumont. Serving as pallbearers will be nephews, Buddy Angell, Tommy Angell, and Robert Winney and family friends, Ralph Jones, and family friends. A gathering of family and friends will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, January 18, 2005 at the mortuary. Elsie Jones Apple, age 93, a former resident of 926 East 6th Street, Washington, NC died Sunday December 30, 2007 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday January 2, 2008 at Oakdale Cemetery of Washington officiated by Pastor Travis Boyd. Mrs. Apple was born in Pamlico County on September 20, 1914 daughter of the late Samuel Jones, Sr. and the late Rena Sawyer Jones. She married George Franklin Apple on April 11, 1936 who preceded her in death on August 17, 1998. Mrs. Apple was a homemaker and a member of Wanoca Presbyterian Church of Washington. Survivors include a son: Thomas Apple and his wife Dona of Washington; two grandchildren: Teresa Hamilton and Doug Sullivan both of Washington; five great grandchildren: William Hamilton, Joni Medlin, Kathryn Hamilton, Jessica Sullivan and Warren Hamilton and three great great grandchildren: Ayden Hamilton, Marley Medlin and Liza Medlin. Mrs. Kazia Paszt Apple, age 70, a resident of 2404 West Fifth Street, Washington, N.C. died Monday January 14, 2008 at her home. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday January 17, 2008 at Mother of Mercy Catholic Church officiated by Father Donald Baribeau. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Brooks Elks, Jeffrey Elks, Jason Baldree, Ricky Paszt, E.J. Paszt, Daniel Paszt and Stephen Paszt will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Apple was born in Poland on September 9, 1937 daughter of the late Peter Stan Paszt and Balbina Hajduk Paszt who survives. After arriving in America she was a 1956 graduate of Washington High School. She married Billy Maben Apple on April 12, 1958 who preceded her in death on August 2, 2004. Mrs. Apple had been an office manager at Roses of Washington, a clerk with Agri Supply of Greenville and was currently an Avon Representative. She was a member of the Beaufort County Choral Society, worked with the Beaufort County Board of Elections, was a member of Mother of Mercy Catholic Church and enjoyed having the time to baby sit her grandchildren. Surviving along with Mrs. Apple’s mother Balbina Paszt of Washington are two daughters: Teresa Elks and her husband Steve of Washington and Cyndi Kvalevog and her husband Kori of Fayetteville; three sons: Billy Wayne Apple of Vanceboro and his girlfriend Becky Jefferson of Simpson, Joe Apple and his wife Regina of Blounts Creek and Matt Apple and his wife Shanda of Gold Hill, N.C.; three brothers: Richard Paszt of Washington, Stan Paszt of Chocowinity and Eddie Paszt of Pinetown; six grandchildren: Brooks Elks, Samantha Elks Baldree and her husband Jason, Jeffrey Elks, Kellie Mitchum, Paige Apple and Bryleigh Apple; three great-grandchildren: Kaylee Elks, Hunter Baldree and Trenton Baldree; her loyal dog Roxie and a host of close and dear friends. Martha Patrick Archbell
Martha Patrick Archbell passed away quietly in her home Tuesday morning, Sept. 12, 2006, after years of declining health. Miss Archbell was born in Chocowinity, N.C., on Sept. 9, 1909, the daughter of the late Minnie Hughes Leroy Archbell and William Clarke Archbell. After the early death of her mother, she moved to Elizabeth City, N.C., and was raised by her maternal grandmother, Grandmother Hughes, and her older sister, Lucille H. Bellanger. Their influence and guidance led her to choose a career in education. She received a bachelor of arts degree in teaching from WomenÕs College of Greensboro (now UNC-Greensboro) and taught in Elizabeth City and Southern Pines before coming to Wilmington in the years when Dr. Haywood Bellamy was superintendent. For a few years after World War II, Miss Archbell served our country in Italy as an administrative assistant for the government, visiting Austria and France while there. She spent six months studying at The Sorbonne in Paris, France, before returning to the United States to resume her teaching career that spanned 46 years. She taught French and Latin at New Hanover High School, and later, after receiving her master's degree from East Carolina University, she became guidance counselor at Hoggard High School. Miss Archbell loved to travel. For many years, she took high school students to Europe in the summer. She traveled extensively in Italy and France. She encouraged everyone to travel and enjoyed hearing about friendÕs travel experiences. Miss Archbell has served as president of The N.C. Retired Teachers Association and had been active in the Colonial Dames before her health declined. She loved her church, St. James Episcopal Church, and really appreciated the visits and loving care of her Stephens minister, Barbara Swann. Miss Archbell is survived by a nephew, Joe Lamb Jr. and his wife, Ann of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; and a special friend, Dr. Emma Jane Lackey and her family, Ed, Emily, and Stewart Merritt, who have considered her part of their family. Pat Hargrove, Jeanne Leonard, Viney Hayes, Deloris Moore, Dot Robinson and Jane Lewis share a special spot in her heart for the passionate and constant care they have given her in her declining years. The Martha Patrick Archbell Educational Scholarship has been established at UNC-W to benefit juniors and seniors who plan to teach at the high school level. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at St. James Episcopal Church in Wilmington, N.C. Mr. Colin Cratch Arnold, 23, a resident of 3591 Mobley’s Bridge Road, Grimesland, died Saturday morning, Sept. 23, 2006 in Pitt County. CAMDEN - Helese Wilder Arthur, of Camden died Monday, March 1. Born in Washington, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Timothy and Jessie Watkins Wilder. Mrs. Arthur was educated in the public school system of Beaufort County, North Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina and her Master of Science in Early Education from North Carolina Central University, Durham, North Carolina. She retired from Kershaw County schools after thirty years. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she was a member of the Missionary Society, Gospel Choir, Mass Choir and the Star Points. She was also a member of Sanders-Stoney American Legion Post #203 Auxiliary, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Surviving are her husband, James E. Arthur, Sr.; son, James E. Arthur, Jr.; brother, Timothy Wilder; adopted daughter, Joyce Collins; and other family. Services will be held at 12 P.M. Saturday at Mt. Mrs. Manning married Paul Leon Asby on August 3, 1940 who preceded her in death on May 29, 1978. She was a seamstress and worked at Sampson’s Shirt Factory for thirty-three years until her retirement in 1984. Mrs. Asby attended Wharton Station United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons: James Albert Asby of Cary and Michael Leon Asby, Sr. of Aurora; a sister: Josephine M. Aranda of Corning, NY; two half sisters: Mary Burrows of Huntsville, AL and Amanda Gail Manning of Washington; two half brothers: Carlton B. Manning and Ervin P. Mildred Johnson Aycock, 99, passed away Dec. 26, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Aycock. She was born in Pantego, N.C., Aug. 14, 1903 where she taught school for 38 years. Survivors include her daughters, Nancy A. Aycock of Kill Devil Hills, Carolyn A. Green of West Palm Beach, Fla., Malinda Fiorita and son-in-law Val Fiorita of Greenwich, Conn.; her grandchildren, Bradford N. Loy of Kitty Hawk, William Gregory Loy of Kill Devil Hills, Jeffrey L. Loy of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Angela A. Green and Christopher J. Green of West Palm Beach, Jeb Douglas Fiorita of London, England, Jason W. Fiorita of Warren, Vt.; and great-grandchildren, Whitney Loy, Patrick Loy and Wolfgang Loy. She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Aycock and her grandson, David A. Loy. During her years as an educator in the Beaufort County School System, she provided positive inspiration for many children. She directed and sang in many operettas and plays produced by the school and the small community of Pantego. Many lives were touched profoundly by her wisdom, wit and kindness. She was the daughter of the late Julius and Maude Moore Jackson. In 1950, she married Elbert Ayers, who died Sept. 27, 2003. She retired as a seamstress with June Day Manufacturing. She was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Mizelle and husband Henry of Williamston; one son, James Ayers and wife Norma Jean of Williamston; two sisters, Alene Bowen and Eloise Cherry of Williamston; two brothers, Jerry Jackson of Pactolus and Dail Jackson of Chocowinity; four grandchildren, Russ Ayers and wife Nancy, Maria Long and husband Chris, Crystal Gurganus and husband Mark and Lauren Mizelle, all of Williamston; one great-grandchild, Thomas Ayers of Williamston. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Jackson and J.M. Jackson. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Biggs Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Robert P. Ayers, Jr.
Mr. Robert P. Ayers Jr., 49, of 302 Crepe Myrtle Lane, Washington, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at home. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Oakdale Cemetery with pastor Phillip Jethro officiating. Mr. Ayers was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 8, 1958. He was the son of Robert P. Ayers Sr. and Flora Bullock Ayers. He was married to the former Karen Alligood, who survives. He was a truck driver. He was a member of Alligood Church of God. Survivors include one daughter, Robin Lynn Ayers of Pamlico Beach; one son, Michael Wayne Ayers of Pamlico Beach; four stepchildren, Sherry Huynh, Carl Huynh and Donald Ray Harrison, all of Washington, and Rhonda Harrison; one sister, Betty Ayers Radcliffe of Pinetown; one brother, Bobbie Lee Ayers of Washington, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie Allen Ayers and Johnny Ray Ayers. Arrangements are by Hillside Funeral Service, Washington.
