Leona Bagley

CAMDEN - Graveside services for Leona W. Bagley, 95, will be held at 2:30 p.m. today in Montlaw Memorial Park, Raleigh, N.C., with the Rev. Jim Harry officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Camden Chapter, P.O. 411, Camden, SC 29020.  Mrs. Bagley died Sunday. Born in Washington, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Wylie Sylvestor and Agnes Rawls Woolard. Mrs. Bagley was married to the late John Clinton Bagley. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Raleigh, N.C.  Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Norma B. and Thomas A. Harrington, Jr. of Camden; grandsons, Thomas A. Harrington III of Harrisburg, N.C., John Bagley Harrington of Camden, Gregory C. Harrington of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a great-grandson; a great-granddaughter; sister, Tillie W. Adelaide Jones Howard Bailey

Mrs. Adelaide Jones Howard Bailey, 93, of Santree Drive, Williamston and formerly of 402 Wilson St., Washington, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at Martin General Hospital.  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at West End Baptist Church, Washington, and will be officiated by the Rev. George Daniels.  Mrs. Bailey was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 14, 1913. She was the daughter of the late William Edgar and Minnie Carolina Jones. She was valedictorian of Washington High School’s Class of 1931. She was married to Benjamin Franklin Howard Sr. of Lenoir County, who preceded her in death in 1955. Later, she married Paul Bailey of Martin County. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Bailey retired as a bookkeeper at the Washington Production Association. She was a charter member of West End Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, Sunday school teacher and church treasurer for over 50 years. She held a lifetime membership in Lodge 675, the Washington chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was chosen Mother of the Year by the Washington Daily News in the 1980s.  Survivors include a daughter, Frances Howard Dees of Washington; a son, Ben Howard Jr. of Burlington; a foster daughter, Emma Howard Price Ellis of Wilmington; a stepson, Paul W. “Bill” Bailey of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Mary Litzenberger of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Evelyn Jones Taylor Watkins of Washington; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, four brothers and two sisters.  The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Paul Funeral Home, Washington, and other times at the home of her daughter Frances Dees, 201 Farm Lane, Washington.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Monday, February 26, 2007)


Bobby Gene Bailey

Mr. Bobby Gene Bailey, 65, formerly of Linden, Michigan, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. A memorial service was be 9:00 AM Tuesday, July 17, 2007, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with the Rev. Steve Atkins officiating. Interment was at Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington, NC.  Mr. Bailey was born in Mohawk, WV.  He was the son of Arthur and Clarissa Christian Bailey.  He was married to Anna Martin Bailey.  Mr. Bailey was a skilled laborer with the General Motors Corporation. At the time of his death, he was relocating in the Beaufort County area.  Survivors include his wife, Anna Martin Bailey; his parents, Arthur and Clarissa Christian Bailey of Bluewell, WV; his daughter and son-in-law, Sonya Roughton and Dearl Roughton of Chocowinity, NC; four sisters, Loran Morgan of Princeton, WV, Rita Camp, Karen Hale and Lana Hall, all of Davy, WV; three grandchildren, Brittany Roughton, Ryan Roughton, and Matthew Roughton, all of Chocowinity, NC; and one great-grandson, David Jones.  Hillside Funeral Service of Washington is serving the Bailey family.  (Hillside Funeral Home - Sunday, July 22, 2007)


Catherine Evans Bailey

Mrs. Catherine Evans Bailey, 64, a resident of 580 Cedar Acres, Chocowinity, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.  A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Temple of Jesus Christ with Bishop James L. Woolard officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Mrs. Bailey was born Jan. 18, 1942 in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Walter Evans and Helen Jones Evans. She was a graduate of P.S. Jones High School. Mrs. Evans was a member of Temple of Jesus Christ, United Church of Christ. She retired as an employee of King Chicken.  Survivors include four daughters, Antoinette Williams of Raleigh, Helen Jean Weatherington, Evelyn Moore and Beverly Ward, all of Washington; a sister, Velma Dorsey of Washington; four brothers, Charles Evans and Frank Evans, both of Tampa, Fla., Purnell Evans of Bronx, N.Y., and John Raymond Jones of Washington; and eight grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Archie.  The family will receive friends at the home.  Arrangements are by Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. Christopher Lee Bailey

Mr. Christopher Lee Bailey of Riverside County, California, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007.  A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Washington, with minister Shirley Peele officiating.  Mr. Bailey was born Sept. 23, 1952, the son of the late Ella Louise Roberson Bailey.  Survivors include three sisters, Marian R. Helen Deans Bailey

Mrs. Helen Deans Bailey of 1417 Highland Drive, Washington, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at home.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington, with Elder Russell S. Wilkins officiating.  Mrs. Bailey was born Nov. 8, 1939, the daughter of the late Jesse and Emma Mullins Deans. She graduated from P. S. Jones High School. She was married to Arthur Bailey, who preceded her in death. She retired after 20 years as a traffic clerk with New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. (now Verizon). She was also employed with the City of Washington water department. She was a member of St. John Church of Christ, where she was a member of the care ministry and treasurer of St. John’s Housing.  Survivors include one daughter, Aletha Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one son, Clifton V. Sykes of Newark, N.J.; four sisters, Wynell Sams and Edna Woodward, both of Newark, N.J., Carolyn Pitts of Chocowinity and Evelyn Mayfield of Washington; three brothers, Leroy Deans and Aaron Deans, both of Washington, and Willie Deans of Jacksonville; and three grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one sister, Clemmie Mae Deans and one brother, Raymond Price.  The family will receive friends today from 7-8 p.m. at Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. James Lee Bailey

Mr. James Lee Bailey, 40, of Bronx, N.Y., and formerly of the Yeatesville community, Bath, died Monday, March 27, 2006, in Bronx, N.Y.  A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church with Elders Sterling Tripp and Elnaam Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the New Kingfield Cemetery, Belhaven.  Mr. Bailey was the son of Robert Bailey Sr. and Sophia T. Bailey of Washington.  Survivors include two brothers, Robert Bailey Jr. of Chocowinity, and Willie Bailey of Washington; and two sisters, Michelle B. Nichson and Wendy B. Shereda Tremaine Bailey

Ms. Shereda Tremaine Bailey, 21, of 115 Juniper Drive, Washington, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.  A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church, Washington, with Bishop James L. Woolard officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.  Ms. Bailey was born in Beaufort County on Aug. 30, 1984. She was the daughter of Shelia Gibbs Brooks and William Gray Bailey Jr. She was a 2002 graduate of Washington High School. She furthered her studies and graduated with an associate degree in nursing from Beaufort County Community College, Class of 2006. She was a member of The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church, Washington, where she served as a youth choir member, third Sunday nursery coordinator and worked with drama presentation.  Survivors include two brothers, William G. “Trey” Gibbs of Charlotte and Jermain Gibbs of Washington; and her grandmothers, Daisy Booth Bailey of Acre Station and Audrie Gibbs of Pinetown.  The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, Jermain Gibbs, 180 Holloman St., Glenview Apartments, Washington.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. William Staten Bailey, Jr.

William Staten Bailey, Jr., 54, of Valrico died Monday at home. A native of Chocowinity, N.C., he was a former Lakeland resident. He was a certified purchasing manager for a public utility company, U.S. Air Force veteran, member of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the National Association of Purchasing Management and attended Brandon Fellowship Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Gerry S.; two daughters, Cynthia B. Gallentine of Atlanta and Corinne B. Curtin of Chicago; a step-daughter, Belinda Hammer of Long Island, N.Y.; his mother, Rubelle Bailey of Lakeland; a brother, Kim of Lakeland; two sisters, Rosa Holdredge of Canyon County, Calif., and Deborah Harkness of Lewisville, N.C.; and two grandchildren. William Staten Bailey, Sr.

William Staten Bailey, 77, of Lakeland died Thursday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. A native of Stokes, N.C., he moved to this area 36 years ago from Chocowinity, N.C. He was a retired Internal Revenue Service agent, fisherman, former agriculture instructor for North Carolina veterans and a member of United Methodist Temple. He is survived by his wife, Rubelle M.; two sons, Kim B. of Lakeland and William Jr. of Brandon; two daughters, Debra E. Harkness of Lewisville, N.C., and Rosa E. Holdridge of Canyon Country, Calif.; a brother, Melbern C. of Washington, N.C.; three sisters, Pauline P. Colson of Bartow and Eva M. Buster Elks Baker, Sr.

Mr. Buster Elks Baker, Sr., age 42, a resident of 224 N. Bonner Street, Washington, died Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Beaufort County Hospital.  Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2008 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Craig Godley and Rupert Wallace.  The following will serve as pallbearers: Mark Campbell, Jeffrey Campbell, Kenny Jones, Michael Hodges, Tony “T.J.” Keech, Jr. and Ashley Sawyer.  Mr. Baker was born in Beaufort County on January 9, 1966. He was the son of the late James Thomas Baker, Sr. and Florida Perry Baker. Mr. Baker was a heating and air technician with Custom Air Services. He loved to hunt and fish.  Mr. Baker is survived by his soul mate, Cathy Massey of Washington; four children, Buster E. Baker, Jr., Brian Lee Baker, Stephanie Deans, James Deans; a brother, James Baker and his wife, Robin of Washington; a sister, Jo Baker of Oriental; and three grandchildren, Somer Wetherington, James Emmett and Rien Sawyer.  The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at the home, 224 N. Edmond L. Baker

Edmond L. Baker, 73, of the 5600 block of Normany Ave., died Aug. 23, 1995, in a Virginia Beach hospital.  He was a native of Chocowinity, N.C., and was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk. He was the retired owner/contractor of Baker's Concrete and was an Army veteran of World War II.  Survivors include his wife, Joan Dodd Baker; two daughters, Pearl B. Crichton and Lisa B. Robinson, both of Virginia Beach; three sons, Edmond P. ''Buddy'' Baker of Chesapeake, Randolph D. Baker of Norfolk, and Howard D. Baker of Virginia Beach; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Evadell Baker of Chocowinity and Cissie Lewis of South Wales, U.K.; and several nieces and nephews.  The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by the Rev. George Baker. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. Johnnie Swindell Baker, Sr.

Mr. Johnnie Swindell “Big John” Baker, Sr., age 87, a resident of 118 Warren Avenue, Chocowinity, died Friday morning, December 29, 2006 at his home.  A graveside service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday December 31, 2006 at Edwards Cemetery officiated by James “Spanky” Anderson.  Mr. Baker was born in Beaufort County on July 12, 1919, son of the late Wiley Baker and Jannie O’Mary Baker. He married Ruby Baker who preceded him in death on April 18, 1992. Mr. Baker served his country during World War II in the US Army. He was employed with Beaufort Equipment Company as a diesel mechanic. Mr. Baker was a member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  He is survived by his children: Ann Dugas of Newport News, VA, Dalton Baker of the home, Janie Harris of Washington, Johnnie Baker, Jr. and Betsy Guthrie both of Chocowinity; his sister: Ethel Chauncey of Washington; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and two step grandchildren. Nancy Worthington Baker

Mrs. Nancy Worthington Baker, 88, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, in Mount Shasta, Calif. A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenville.  Born in Washington, N.C., in 1917, Mrs. Baker was a longtime resident of Greenville, making it her home for 35 years. In 1941, she married Charles Emerson Baker. He preceded her in death in 1991.  She is survived by two daughters, Joan O. Sengewalt and her husband, Larry, of Powell, Ohio, and Ann B. Carsie E. Bakken

MANLY, IOWA — Carsie E. Bakken, 64, of Manly died Sunday (November 4, 2007) at her home after a brief bout with cancer.  A celebration of Carsie’s life and public viewing was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (November 7, 2007) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, Iowa.  Burial will be in Haw Branch Church Cemetery, Chocowinity, North Carolina.  Carsie E. Bakken was born March 20, 1943 at Washington, North Carolina, a daughter of Donald and Stella (Nelson) Dale.  Carsie owned, The Bookery, at 12 S. Federal, Mason City, Iowa. She devoted her life to her family and her passion of books.  She will be missed by many and loved by all. Connie Sheppard Ball

Ms. Connie Sheppard Ball, 27, of 5686 U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington.  A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, with Tony Krantz officiating.  Thomas Silverthorne, Phillip Silverthorne, Jackie Buck, Eric Buck, Johnlee Buck and Jamie Silverthorne will serve as pallbearers.  Ms. Ball was born in Beaufort County on Feb. 21, 1980. She was the daughter of George Sheppard of Washington and the late Martha Buck Sheppard. Marjorie Elizabeth Wilkerson Ball

Mrs. Marjorie Elizabeth Wilkerson Ball, age 78, a former resident of 228 East 2nd Street, Washington, NC died Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington.  A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday October 5, 2007 at the First Church of Christ in Washington officiated by Ray West and Arthur “Bud” Ball, Jr. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Max Wilkerson, Jr., Aaron Mobley, Adam Waters, Hal Younce, Arthur Ball, Jr., Earl Tyson and Philip Mobley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Clayton and Carl Smith, Sr.  Mrs. Elizabeth was born in Pamlico County on November 1, 1928 daughter of the late William Clinton Wilkerson and the late Annie McCotter Wilkerson. The family moved to Washington where she graduated from high school and enrolled in nursing school at Tayloe Hospital in 1941. She held several nursing positions at Beaufort County Hospital including the labor and delivery, operating room and the emergency department. Mrs. Elizabeth also worked as Dr. Williams’ nurse in his family medical practice. She wanted to be a nurse from childhood and had a passion for the medical career. Mrs. Elizabeth married James Franklin Ball, Jr. on January 4, 1958 who preceded her in death on January 9, 1992. She retired from nursing to become a housewife and care for her family as a loving mother, wife and friend to all. Mrs. Elizabeth was a member of First Church of Christ and attended until her health began to fail.  Mrs. Elizabeth is survived by her brother: Max Wesley Wilkerson of Washington; her three children: Karen Kay Ball, Gregory Eugene Ball and Susan B. Tyson and her husband Randy all of Washington; three grandchildren: Aaron Michael Mobley, Samantha Ann Mobley and Alexander Ian Tyson and several nieces and nephews. Russell Matthew Ball, Sr.

Mr. Russell Matthew Ball Sr., 55, of 119 Hope Blvd., Dudley, died Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.  A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at the Jordan family cemetery in Pinetown with pastors Larry Ball and Austin Pendergraft officiating. The body will lie in state for viewing today through 1:30 p.m. Monday.  Mr. Ball was born in Beaufort County on April 22, 1951. He was the son of the late Mayhew Ball and Eloise Jordan Ball. He was a painter with Turner Tank Co. in Goldsboro. Hilda Mae Modlin Ballance

WASHINGTON - Hilda Mae Modlin Ballance, 67, of 201 Pontiac Drive, died Friday, Nov. 17 at her home.  Born in Beaufort County Feb. 8, 1928, she was the daughter of Dennis and Lillian Modlin.  She was married to Johnnie William Ballance who died in 1990.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington.  Surviving are a daughter, Barbara B. Gardner of Washington; two brothers: Hilton Ray Modlin of Washington and Bobby Earl Modlin of Chocowinity; two sisters: Katie Johnson and Ellen Hardison, both of Washington; two grandchildren: Jamie and John Michael Carraway, both of Chesapeake, Va.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the family plot at Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter.  The Rev. Doris Howell Baluis

CHOCOWINITY, N.C. - Mrs. Doris Howell Baluis, age 66, a resident of Route 2, Crisp Landing Road, Chocowinity, N.C., died Tuesday at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington. She was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 13, 1928. She was the daughter of Norman B. Little and the late Blanche Crisp Little. She was married to Adolfo Rosete Baluis, who survives.  Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Debbie Howell of Chocowinity and Annette Baluis of Durham, N.C.; a son, Victor Baluis of Garner, N.C.; her father, Norman B. Little of Chocowinity; two sisters, Rosa Woodall and Shirley Formichelli, both of Newport News; and a brother, Benjamin Little of Newport News. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, by Rev. Elmer Bauman. Burial in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Jay Edward Bannon

Jay Edward Bannon, 70, died Tuesday Sept. 30, 1997, in his home.  Born in Washington, N.C., he was the son of the late Edward and Ann Louise Russell Bannon. He was a sales representative with the Reuben H. Donnelley Co., Norfolk, for 26 years. Charity Barber, of the 1200 block of W. 27th St., a housewife, died Oct. 10, 1993 in her residence.  She was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was a member of Mount Gilead Pentecostal Holiness Church of Norfolk.  She is survived by her husband, Henry M. Barber; four daughters, Angel Wright, Anita Barber, Brenda Barber, all of Norfolk, and Wanda Williams of Erie, Pa.; three sons, Derek L. Barber and Alvin Barber of Norfolk, Henry M. Barber of Virginia Beach; her mother, Ida Bea Alston Ward of North Carolina; one sister, Anna Ward of Baltimore; five brothers, Alfred Perry Ward Sr. of Belhaven, N.C., Jessie Ward Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., George Ward of New Jersey, Frank Ward of Detroit, and Harrison Ward of South Carolina; and 19 grandchildren.  A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Mount Gilead Pentecostal Holiness Church and will be conducted by Bishop Nancy Jenkins. Lucille E. Barber

Lucille E. Barber, 83, of the 5900 block of Finney St., died Sept. 9, 1999, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.  She was born in Belhaven, N.C., and was the widow of Henry R. Barber. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and its Deaconess Board and Matron's Guild. She was also involved with the Sunday school program. She was a member of Excelsior Chapter No. 82, PHA; the Past Matrons, Past Patrons Council; and past president of District 2 Council, PHA. She was a high school graduate. She received special honors from Excelsior Chapter No. 82, PHA, and at the Burrus, Bradshaw, Spencer, O'Neal family reunion; was twice Woman of the Year at Jerusalem Baptist Church, and a charter member of the Elizabeth Cobb Vitality Tent No. 755. She was predeceased by her mother, Beulah Burrus, her father, Flynn Burrus, four sisters, five brothers and her grandparents. Survivors include her husband, Henry Barber; two daughters, Sandra Etheridge and her husband, Weyland Etheridge, and Allison Hopkins and her husband, Lavon Hopkins; a goddaughter, Cynthia Moss; a son, Henry M. Barber; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.  A funeral will be held at noon Wednesday at 718 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, by the Rev. Thurman Mayo Barber

Mr. Thurman Mayo Barber of 519 Beaver Dam Road, Pinetown, NC 27865, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at home.  He was born in Martin County, March 28, 1944. He was the son of Chrish M. Barber (Toby) and Della S. Barber and was predeceased by his mother and father and three brothers, James M. (Jimmy) Barber, Sr., Doug Barber and Kenneth Barber.  Survivors include two daughters, Yvonn Barber Parker and husband Kevin of Washington and Cindy Barber Smith and husband Frankie of Vanceboro; one sister, Leta Barber Chappelle of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Marvin Barber and wife Bobby (BJ) of Williamston, N.C.; two grandsons, Eric Smith of Vanceboro and Daniel Parker of Washington; three granddaughters, Sarah Dawn Smith of Vanceboro, Jennifer Parker and Jacqueline Parker, both of Washington, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Chelsey of Vanceboro and a special friend, Barbara Waters of Pinetown, N.C.  A memorial service will be held at Shiloh Church, Pinetown on Sunday, June 4 at 3 p.m.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) - Friday, June 2, 2006)


Willie Ray Barber

Willie Ray Barber was born on October 3, 1923, in Belhaven, North Carolina. His parents were Evelyn Barber and Harry Barnhill. An only child, Willie attended an Episcopal school in Belhaven, surrounded by family and lifelong friends.  After high school, he became a student at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina, the first in his family to attend college. While a student, he was drafted into the Navy during World War II, and proudly served his country as a chef for the naval officers on the USS Botetourt and the USS Wayne in the Philippines.  At the completion of his war service, Willie returned to St. Augustine’s College and graduated with his B.S. degree in History, Class of 1949. He then taught school in Warrenton, Georgia, where he met his future wife, Maryfrances, who had the good luck to be teaching in the same area. They were married and moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where Willie began working for the federal government in the Navy Department. While in Norfolk, he became the very proud father of Kenneth and Stephanie.  Several years later, Willie came to Philadelphia, where he taught high school, but shortly thereafter returned to a distinguished career in government service with the Navy. He retired after 35 years.  Willie was very active in his church, The Church of the Savior, where he carried the cross every Sunday, and served on the Vestry Board for many years. At the same time, he taught Bible study at the Germantown Senior Center for several years. He was a devoted member of St. Augustine’s College Alumni Association and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for over 30 years.  Willie loved watching westerns, baseball, basketball, football, fishing and food. Also reading history books, blues (B.B. King), gospel music (Shirley Caesar), listening to and reading great sermons (Reverend C.L. Franklin). He was a great talker, great listener, and a true intellectual. Willie was loved by all ... and will be missed by many.  He leaves his devoted wife of 55 years, Maryfrances, son Kenneth of West Chester, PA; daughter, Stephanie of East Orange, NJ; granddaughter Kenyatta of Philadelphia; cousins Ralph Braddock, Ann McCollough, and Mary Barber, all of Belhaven, NC; sister-in-laws Arlethia Elliott of Norfolk, VA; Claudia Moss and Helen Cason, both of Philadelphia, PA; brother-in-law Walter Peterson, Sr. of Miramar, FL; dear friend John Miller of Erdenhein, PA, in addition to a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, family and friends.  Family and friends are invited to Willie’s Life Celebration, Sat. April 28, 2007, after 10 a.m. from John F. Givnish of Academy Road, 10975 Academy Road, Phila. Jonathan Miles Barbre

Mr. Jonathan Miles Barbre, 37, of 609 E. Main St., Washington, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Deacon Janet Sueiro Rodman officiating.  Mr. Barbre was born in Kinston on May 12, 1969. He was the son of Ray Sinclair Barbre Jr. of Greenville and Nellie “Nell” Miles Credle of Washington. He attended Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston and graduated from Washington High School. He was a lifelong Episcopalian. Charlotte L. Cradle. She was a former member of the Garden of Prayer, Portsmouth. She was a graduate of Booker T. Jerry Lee Barnes

Jerry Lee Barnes, 34, of 114 Gladewood Circle died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, in Raleigh. Kenneth Dixon officiating.  He was preceded in death by his mother, the former Selma Bazemore, and a brother, Timmy Barnes. BELHAVEN - Mrs. Elvira Barnett, age 80, died early today in the Tyrrell County Hospital in Columbia after a long illness.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Paul Funeral Home.  Mrs. Barnett, who has spent most of her life here, had lived at Manteo for the past several years.  She was a member of the Belhaven Free Will Baptist Church.  Mrs. Barnett was the widow of the late John Barnett of this community who died in 1967.  Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Wiley Spencer of South Mills, Mrs. Johnny Davis of Silver Springs, Fla., Mrs. Johnny Jarvis of Chesapeake, Va., Mrs. Gladys Fairbanks of Wanchese, Mrs. Herbert Alexandria of Manteo, Mrs. Guy Satterthwaite of Belhaven; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  (Beaufort-Hyde News (Belhaven, NC) - Monday, March 1, 1976)

VIRGINIA BEACH - Hazel Leigh Woolard Barnett, 87, went home to be with her Lord on March 21, 2005. Mrs. Barnett was born in Washington, NC to the late William and Ethel Jackson Woolard. She was predeceased by her husband Ethridge Lee Barnett and son Kenny Barnett.  Survivors include three sons William Barnett and wife, Patricia, James Barnett and wife, Cecelia and Larry Barnett; two daughters, Verdia L. She was married to Connie Barrow, who preceded her in death. She attended the Bath Schools. She had worked as a housekeeper with many families in the Bath area. Max Raymond Barrow, of the 2300 block of Drum Creek Road, died Dec. 23, 1994, in his residence.  Mr. Barrow was born in Belhaven, N.C. He had retired from the Marine Dept. of the Gulf Oil Co. as an engineer after 35 years. He received the Merchant Marine Meritorious Service Medal.  Survivors include his wife, Helen W. James William Batchelor

James J. Battle, Sr.

PIEDMONT - James J. Battle, Sr. died on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Riverside Nursing Home.  Born in Aurora, N.C., he was a son of the late Felix and Amanda Potter Battle. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  Mr. Battle was employed for many years as a chef at Greenville General Hospital, Vince Perone Restaurant and the Poinsett Hotel (Jack Tar).  Survivors include three sons, Dr. James J. Battle Jr. (Joyce) of Greensboro, N.C., Michael F. Battle (Jackie) and John B. Battle, both of Greenville; one sister, Mrs. Alvina B. Moore of Edward, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  He was a faithful member of Allen Temple AME Church until his illness.  Home Going Services will be conducted at Allen Temple AME Church, 2 p.m. Monday, with burial in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Edna Ray Baugh

Mrs. Edna Ray Baugh, age 89, a resident of 103 Beaufort Place, died Thursday morning, June 14, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital.  A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Mrs. Baugh’s nephew, Sid Cundiff. Her grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Mrs. Baugh was born in Kentucky on January 31, 1918. She was the daughter of the late George Thomas Ray and Lora Crabtree Ray. On June 27, 1942, she married Marion Harvey Baugh who preceded her in death on January 30, 1993.  Although Mrs. Baugh had lived most of her adult life in Falls Church, Virginia, and Washington, NC, her roots were buried deep in her birthplace of Kentucky. Her family was very dear to her as were her many friends. As long as her health allowed, each year she traveled back to her Kentucky hometown to visit with those loved ones who remained.  Well known for her keen sense of humor, “Edna Earle” brought laughter to those around her. She could laugh at herself and enjoy others’ laughter at her expense. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was known for her cooking skills which were proven time and again in the delicious dishes she prepared.  Mrs. Baugh is survived by her children: Sharon Eaton and her husband, Chuck of Washington and Jim Baugh and his wife, Lauren of Blounts Creek; her grandsons: Donald Ambrose and wife, Susan; Matthew Ambrose and wife, Adriana; Ricky Eaton and wife, Donna; Wade Sisson and Ben Sisson and seven great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Howard Ray.  The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Sharon Eaton located at 209 Oak Drive, Washington. Doris Wilma Bayot, 79, of the 1000 block of White Oak Court South, a retired bookkeeper, died Nov. 22, 1994, in Chesapeake General Hospital.  Mrs. Bayot was born in Belhaven, N.C., and was the widow of Vito B. Bayot. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, and the Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve.  Survivors include a daughter, Ester Dolores Carraher of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Thelma Haislett of Norfolk; two brothers, Wilson Beasley of Norfolk and James Beasley of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Cmdr. Michael P. Agnor, USN, of Virginia Beach, Teresa L. Billman of Texas, Laurie A. Davies and Marcy Carr, both of Chesapeake; and five great-grandchildren.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Colonial Baptist Church by Pastor Daniel K. Davey. James C. Beasley

James C. ''Red'' Beasley, 74, of the 3300 block of MacDonald Road, died Dec. 18, 2000, in Lake Taylor Hospital.  Born in Belhaven, N.C., on Feb. 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Burwell B. Beasley and Willa Bell Simpson Beasley. He was the widower of his loving wife of 47 years, Patty L. Beasley. Mr. Beasley retired after 37 years of service as a sheet metal supervisor at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and then worked 10 more years at C.D.I. Marine. He was a member of Masonic Doric Lodge No. 44 and served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer during World War II. Survivors include three sons, Jimmy (James) C. Beasley and his wife, Donna, Kevin L. Beasley and his wife, Shelly, and Bentley B. Beasley and his wife, Kathy; four grandchildren, Kendall M. Beasley, Nicole L. Beasley, Christine Hill and her husband, Mark, and David Gillespie; two great-grandchildren, Isabel Gillespie and Kaitlyn Hill; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a brother, Wilson Lee Beasley; and three sisters, Thelma Haislett, Violet O'Neil, and Doris Bayot.  A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Marcell Robinson Beason

Mrs. Marcell Robinson Beason of 906 Van Norden St., Washington, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital.  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Metropolitan AME Zion Church with the Rev. David L. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Mrs. Beason was born Aug. 16, 1926, the daughter of the late Robert C. and Ernestine Pinckney Robinson of Charleston, S.C. She graduated from Stephens Lee High School, Asheville, and North Carolina Central University, Durham. She was married to William H. Beason, who survives. She was a retired school teacher with the Washington City Schools. She was a member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church.  Survivors include two daughters, Anita B. Gibbs of Laurel, Md., and Cindy B. Fox of Severn, Md.; two sisters, Gwendolyn Atkinson and Genevieve Brown, both of Charlotte; and six grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert C. Robinson Jr. and Ernest P. She was the retired owner of Hazardous Environmental Supply, Inc. (HES). Mrs. Beeman attended Memorial FWB Church in Chocowinity.  In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Loren Edward Beeman, II and his wife, Tina, Lisa Beeman Romeo and her husband, Jeff, and Larry Allen Beeman and his wife, Roxanne; and six grandchildren, Austin Beeman, Katie Beeman, Sean Romeo, Luke Romeo, Davis Beeman, and Mary-Morgan Beeman. Clarissa Bailey Bell

Mrs. Clarissa Bailey Bell of Arbor Acres died Monday, March 13, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born in Washington, N.C., Feb. 9, 1910. She graduated from Peace College. For 17 years she taught kindergarten at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Charlotte and for two years in the Head Start program in Raleigh before moving to Winston-Salem where she was a housemother at Salem College from 1973 to 1979. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank M. Bell. She is survived by her sons, Frank M. Bell Jr. and wife Ranlet and Richard B. Bell and wife Elizabeth; daughter-in-law Kathryn G. Bell; a brother, David Thomas Bailey and wife Lula Gray; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Devon Gray Bell

Mr. Devon Gray Bell, age 75, a resident of 6271 River Road, Washington, died Saturday morning, July 14, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 16, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Rev. He attended Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church and was a member of the Washington Moose Lodge 1800. On May 27, 1978, he married the former Eleanor (Lois) Stanley Bell, who survives.  Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, JoAnn B. Thrift of Thomasville, N.C., and Sherri B. Brown of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Devon “Von” Bell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Cynthia E. Johnson of Winston Salem, N.C.; one stepson, William Charles Elkins of Trinity, N.C. Other survivors include nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jasper Bell of Morehead City and Mayhew Bell of Chocowinity. Donnie Herman Bell, Sr.

He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway and as Maintenance Supervisor for the City of Washington, working 23 years in each position. He was married to Elizabeth Hales, who preceded him in death on July 16, 1978.  He later married Verda Moore Woolard, who preceded him in death on October 21, 2002.  He was a member of the Redmen Lodge, Tau Tribe #18.  Mr. Bell loved gardening.  Survivors include his son, Donnie Herman Bell, Jr. of Chocowinity; his step-daughter, Sylvia Wall of Chesterfield, VA; three sisters, Beulah Rhodes of Elizabeth City, Roxie Edwards of Chocowinity and Ann Beacham of Chocowinity; one brother, David Leon Bell of Hatfield, Mass.; two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Bell and Verda Amanda Bell, both of Chocowinity; three great-grandchildren, Alexis Olivia Grace Jones, Donnie Lance Bell and John Christopher Bell and very special family friend, Shirley Crawford.  Mr. Bell was also preceded in death by four sisters, Magdalene B. James T. Bell

CHESAPEAKE - James T. Bell, 81, died Oct. 25, 2001. He was born in Washington, N.C. on Feb. 14, 1920 to the late James W. and Dora Pryor Bell.  Mr. Bell was a retired chief petty officer having served in the U.S. Navy in the American, European and the Asiatic/Pacific theaters during World War II where he received four battle stars. He later retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a supervisor in the transportation department with 31 years combined service. Mr. Bell was a member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257, where he served as Master in 1960. He was a charter member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the Scottish Rite and member of the Sunbeam and Paul D. Camp Hunt clubs. Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn B. ''Babe'' Whitfield Bell.  Survivors include a brother, Oda C. Bell of Arange, Texas; and nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.  A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Robin E. Wooddell officiating. She attended Terra Ceia Christian School and Beaufort County Community College. She was employed as a customer service representative with Sprint of New Bern for a number of years. She graduated from Bath High School, was a homemaker and a member of St. Clair’s Church of Christ.  Survivors include one daughter, Judith Bell of Raleigh and Bath; one stepdaughter, Kay B. Roger Roosevelt Bell

Roger Roosevelt Bell, age 90, of Havelock, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2007.  A resident of Havelock for over 56 years, he enjoyed life blessed with good health and many friends who will always remember his quiet sense of humor and keen desire to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Craven County.  Mr. Bell, the second of nine children, was born March 09, 1917 at home in rural Chocowinity at Blounts Creek of Beaufort County, to Redden Churchill and Martha (Bessie) Elizabeth Arnold Bell.  His father passed away in late 1961 and his mother, in early 1978.  His late paternal and maternal grandparents were Joseph and Nancy McGowan Bell of Blounts Creek and James Henry and Betty Smith Arnold of Grimesland.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Allen Bell; one infant daughter; a grandson, James Arland Bell; three brothers, infant Cleo Bell, Redden Churchill Bell Jr., and Jesse Dalton Bell; and two sisters and their spouses, Lillian and Carl Edwards of Washington, N.C., and Ruth and Bill Southard of Monroe.  Mr. Bell was a longtime member and deacon of Cherry Point Baptist Church in Havelock.  He enjoyed assisting with numerous building and maintenance projects and the fellowship of the Men’s Sunday School Class.  He attended Beaufort County Schools.  At the age of 9, he assisted his father in manually clearing land to raise tobacco, in the milling of lumber, and the subsequent building of the permanent family home in Blounts Creek.  For over 35 years, this home was the gathering place for the annual Bell family homecoming held the weekend after Christmas.  Mr. Bell served honorably in the U.S. Army from March 1936 to May 1938 as a military policeman in Company C, 14th Infantry, while stationed in Panama, Central America.  A second enlistment in the Army followed from September 1940 to 1941 as sergeant of Battery C, 113th Field Artillery.  Upon the United States’ declaration of war on Japan in December 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the USN Armed Guard, which provided the gun crews for all Merchant Marine, Liberty and Victory Ships transporting war material to the European and Pacific war theatres during World War II.  From December 1941 to September 1945, he served on a sea-going tug, oil/gas tanker, and munitions ships transiting the Gulf of Mexico, the East Coast and the North Atlantic to England and France. He also served as a gun captain and petty officer responsible for the ships’ gun crews and the training, maintenance and operation of all guns. While at Camp Shelton, Va., he taught gunnery school on the ship’s main gun.  For his military service, he was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal, Honorable Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and American Campaign Medal.  From the early 1950s to the mid-1980s, he owned the well-known Cherry Barber Shop, located at the Commercial Shopping Center in Havelock in addition to several other barbershops in Little Washington and Havelock.  Enjoying building construction, he personally constructed his own residences and several light commercial buildings.  As a citizen of Craven County, he served on the Craven County Board of Education from 1955 to 1984 and as chairman from November 1974 to January 1980.  He assisted in guiding the merger of the Craven County and the City of New Bern Boards of Education in 1981. Mr. Bell was honored for his dedication to the citizens of Craven County by the New Bern-Craven County Board of Education in the naming of a new elementary school for him, the Roger R. Bell Elementary School, in Havelock in January 1986.  In 1982 to 2003, he served on the Board of Trustees of Craven Community College. And, he contributed substantial time and influence in assisting local officials in obtaining from the Department of Defense real estate for the establishment of the Craven Community College’s Havelock campus. The college’s Learning Lab/Career Center was named in his honor.  Mr. Bell served on the Craven County Board of Commissioners from 1984 to 1994 and as board chairman from 1985-86, always providing steady guidance during challenging times.  He was an active participant while serving on committees such as the Ad Hoc Personnel, Neuse Rive COG, Civilian Military Community, Kellenberger Foundation, Health Board, Swiss Bear and Tourism Development. During his tenure, the Craven County Courthouse Annex, Human Services Complex and County Administration Building were completed. Mr. Bell was active for many years in the Craven County Democratic Party.  Mr. Bell is survived by his second wife, Nelma “Joyce” Daniels Bell of Havelock.  Also surviving are five children from his first marriage and their families: son Arland L. Bell, his spouse Jane, grandson Willie A. Bell, of Havelock, granddaughter Melissa B. Murphy, her spouse Jeffrey, and great-grandchildren Katie and Ethan of Swansboro; son Gene A. Tague, her spouse Matt and great-granddaughter Gabriella of Raleigh; daughter Talitha B. Boyd, her spouse Thomas, granddaughter Grace B. Martin, her spouse Andrew, grandson Trey Boyd, his spouse Kelly and great-granddaughters Leah and Gracin Boyd, all of Summerville, S.C.; son Roger R. Claudia Rebecca Moore Bennett

Claudia Rebecca Moore Bennett, 85, of Camden passed on Thursday November 23, 21000. Claudia (affectionately know as "Mom", "Granny", "Gram'me", "Sissy Claudia", "Bennett") was born in Bath, North Carolina in 1915 to the late Brady and Mattie Winston Moore. She was the second of six children and was raised in Little Washington, North Carolina. Claudia moved to New Jersey in the 1930's to make a better life for her family. She worked as a seamstress, domestic and later went to school to become a home health aide. During this time Claudia nurtured, comforted and impacted in some special way, the lives of those whose paths she crossed. Surviving is her daughter Saundra Williams, her sister Ida Tatem and a myriad of family and friends. The viewing will be held Wednesday 9-11am at the Evangelism Today Christian Church in Camden. Guy Smith Bennett, Jr.

Guy Smith Bennett, Jr., age 75, of 300 Magnolia Drive, Camden, NC, died Friday, August 15, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Beaufort County, NC, son of the late Guy Smith and Roberta Malason Bennett, Sr. Mr. Bennett was a civil service worker and served in the US Army.  He is survived by three sisters, Veva Flemings of Knightdale, NC, Mildred Tetterton of Washington, NC, and Lola B. Robert Marvin Bennett

Mr. Robert Marvin Bennett, age 68, a resident of 110 Dogwood Drive, Pamlico Village, Washington, NC died Monday morning June 11, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital.  A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens officiated by Dr. Jimmy Moore. His three sons and other family members will serve as pallbearers.  Mr. Bennett was born in Beaufort County on March 27, 1939. He was the son of the late Ernest and Sally Bennett and Ruby Bennett Thomas. He was a graduate of Aurora High School and retired from PCS with 33 years of service. At his retirement he was the shift supervisor in the fertilizer department. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Core Point Free Will Baptist Church and a member of the Washington Moose Lodge. He served his country as a member of the 7th Cavalry in the U.S. Army and in the Army Reserve. Virginia Hollowell Bennett

GREENVILLE - Mrs. Virginia Hollowell Bennett, 89, of 917 Falcon Circle, Greenville, NC died Thursday, December 21, 2006, at home, after several years of declining health.  Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in First Christian Church by Rev. Jim Wilson, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church in Tarboro, NC. Interment will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.  Mrs. Bennett was born December 21, 1917 to Grover C. and Palistean Hollowell in Aurora, N.C. After graduation from high school, she attended cosmetology school and worked in Suffolk, VA before returning to Beaufort County, N.C. where she married Elbert H. Bennett on October 30, 1941. Their life together was cut short when her husband passed away June 18, 1967. Shortly after her husband’s death, Mrs. Bennett began working at J.C. Penney Company as a clerk, retiring in 1987. After her retirement, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, and knitting. Even after her eyesight failed she continued to knit gifts for children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She donated some of her creations to the less fortunate new mothers at Heritage Hospital in Tarboro, N.C. Mrs. Bennett will be remembered as a devoted mother, supportive mother-in-law, proud grandmother, adoring great-grandmother and loving sister. Her family was second only to her Lord and Savior. She was a member of First Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Robin Adams, whom Mrs. Bennett loved very much, for her devotion and care of their loved one. A special thanks goes to Jean Askew, Hospice nurse, who lovingly and cheerfully cared for Mrs. Bennett the last few days of her life.  Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, Grover C. He attended Beaufort Community College and was a millwright mechanic and worked on heavy equipment. On December 7, 2001, he married the former Cheryl Jean Ange. He was a member of Wilkinson Church of Christ and a former member of Pungo Swamp Hunting Club. He loved fishing and was an avid sportsman.  In addition to his wife, Cheryl of the home, he is survived by his son: Jerod Jay Benson and his wife, Cathy of Pinetown; two daughters: Amanda Benson Van Gyzen and her husband, Bryan of Pantego and Karen Benson Carson and her husband, Chad of Washington; his brother: Mickey Benson and his wife, Connie of Pantego; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren and his step-mother: Edythe Benson of Pantego. She graduated in 1974 from D.H. Conley High School and did further studies at Albert Muriel in computer science. On Aug. 11, 1986, she married Frederick Benston, who survives. She was an assembly worker at Asahi-Greenville. She was a member of Jesus Is Alive F.S.H.G. Carl J. Bentzel

A memorial service for Dr. Carl J. Bentzel, a former professor of medicine at the University at Buffalo, will be held in Greenville, N.C., at a later date. Bentzel, 68, of Chocowinity, N.C., died Oct. 25, 2002, in Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., after a short illness.  Bentzel had a long, distinguished career in nephrology and contributed to landmark studies of tight junction between cells that changed the approach to the investigation of kidney disease.  A native of Mobile, Ala., Bentzel received his medical degree from the University of Alabama. He completed his internship and residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.  He went on to serve as a clinical associate in radiation and metabolism at the National Cancer Institute, and as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School.  From 1966 to 1984, Bentzel was a faculty member at UB, where he served as a professor of medicine and chief of nephrology, as well as associate professor of physiology. In 1984, he joined the faculty at East Carolina's Brody School of Medicine, where he served as head of renal medicine.  Bentzel was principal investigator for more than 10 research grants and published more than 100 papers, journal articles and book chapters. He was honored with membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha and Omega Delta Kappa. He is included in "American Men and Women of Science," 15th edition, and "Who's Who in America, Science and Education."  He was a member of the American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Clinical Investigation, American Physiological Society, International Society of Nephrology, Pitt County Medical Society, North Carolina State Medical Society, American Medical Association and the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine.  He also sat on a number of editorial boards and medical organizations, including the Education Committee for the North Carolina State Medical Society.  Survivors include his wife, Sara of Chocowinity, N.C.; a son, Carl of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Anne of Alexandria, Va., Elizabeth of Washington, D.C., and Catherine Holland of Great Falls, Va.; a sister, Dr. Elizabeth Buck of Honolulu; and two grandchildren.  (The Buffalo News (Buffalo, NY) – November 3, 2002)

Mrs. Margaret E. Ferrell Allen Berry, 60, of 286 Farrow Fork Road, Engelhard, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital.  Born in Beaufort County, October 31, 1945, he was the son of Elsie Gibbs Berry of Engelhard and the late Beamon Berry. He graduated from the former East Hyde High School, attended Chowan College for one year and then transferred to North Carolina State University, where he completed his degree in agriculture. He taught at Mattamuskeet School for one year and then began his career in farming. He continued to work in the basketball program at the school and served as the president of the Athletic Booster’s Club and also served on the advisory board of the former Davis School. An avid sportsman, he was currently serving as president of the Hyde County Waterfowl Association. In other community interests, he was a member of the Engelhard Rotary Club and served on the board of directors of Hyde County Farm Bureau. He was among a group who organized the Engelhard Volunteer Fire Department. He was a lifelong member of Watson’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Fulford Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Steve Bryan will officiate. Pallbearers will be Guire Cahoon, Gary Cahoon, C.W. Cahoon, Leigh Ballance, Martelle Marshall and Edwin Berry.  Surviving are his wife, Donna Day Berry; his mother, Elsie Gibbs Berry of Engelhard; three daughters, Andrea B. White of Olanta, S.C., Kelley B. Dow of Mars Hill, N.C. and Natalie B. Wayne of Engelhard; a brother, Gregory Kyle Berry of Engelhard; a sister, Pamela Kay Berry of Charlotte; a granddaughter, Hayden White of Olanta, S.C.  Ferrell was also preceded in death by a son, Timothy Duane Berry.  The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service on Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Wednesday, May 10, 2006)


Herman Lollas Berry, Sr.

Mr. Herman Lollas Berry, Sr., age 72, a resident of 119 Cedar Circle, Washington, NC died Tuesday September 12, 2006 at the Beaufort County Hospital.  A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday September 15, 2006 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens officiated by Pastor Phillip Jethro. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Keech, Tommy Horne, Dallas Berry, Eric Kelder, Gary Toler and Ken Dillenger.  Mr. Berry was born in Beaufort County on July 23, 1934, son of the late Charlie Whitfield Berry and the late Liddie Mae O’Neal Berry. He attended Washington City Schools and married the former Shirley Lucille Niles on August 5, 1955 who survives. Mr. Berry worked at National Spinning Company and retired as a maintenance scheduler in the engineering department at the time of his retirement in 1998. Mr. Berry confessed Jesus Christ as his personal savior and longed for the time that his health would permit him to attend Alligood Church of God.  Surviving along with his wife Shirley of the home is a son: Herman L. Berry, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Washington; two daughters: Connie Eve Berry Seagle and her husband, Dennis of Chattanooga, TN and Elizabeth Diane Berry Shavender and her husband, Bill of Washington; a sister: Mary B. Slade of Washington and a granddaughter: Kristin Dawn Berry Huber and her husband, Kelvin of Washington. Mr. Berry had two special companions: Tiger and Squeaky that filled the void left when his children moved from the home to make a life of their own. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Warren Berry, John Berry, Bill Berry and Dallas “Huck” Berry.  The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday September 14, 2006 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home.  Paul Funeral Home of Washington is serving the Berry family.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Thursday, September 14, 2006)


George E. Bess

George E. Bess, 89, of the 3000 block of Kansas Ave., died April 7, 1993.  Mr. Bess retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad after 33 years of service. He was born in Pantego, N.C., and was a Protestant. Mr. Bess was the widower of Maggie Bess. Survivors include three sons, Ervin L. Bess of Chesapeake and Joe F. Bess and Gary W. Bess, both of Norfolk; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Ernest Trueblood at Rosewood Memorial Park. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.  (The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) – April 8, 1993; pg. D2)
