Mrs. Bessie Smith Crandell, 88, a resident of Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home and formerly of 361 Frederick Road, Chocowinity, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Ridgewood Manor. Mrs. Bessie Smith Crandell, 88, a resident of Ridgewood Manor nursing home and formerly of 361 Frederick Road, Chocowinity, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Ridgewood Manor. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Beach Grove Free Will Baptist Church with Elder Troy L. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith No. 1 cemetery. Mrs. Crandell was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 25, 1917. She was the daughter of the late John and Hattie P. Smith. She attended Beaufort County schools. She was married to David Crandell, who preceded her in death. She was a lifelong member of Beach Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Thelma S. Nelson of Washington; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one sister, Sally S. Franklin of Baltimore, Md. Mr. Fred Cratch of 3510 Palm Ave., Texas City, Texas, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at UTMB Hospital. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington, with Elder Kenny Simmons officiating. Mr. Cratch was born in Beaufort County on May 14, 1957. He was the son of the late Henry E. Cratch Sr. and Augusta E. Boyd Cratch. He graduated from Washington High School. Survivors include four sisters, Reacy Hopkins of Philadelphia, Pa., Laura Bailey and Annie B. Griffin, both of Washington, and Mary Evelyn Lilley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and one brother, Henry Cratch of Texas City, Texas. Mrs. Virginia Louise Ecklin Cratch, 85, of 723 Windmill Road, Chocowinity, died Monday, March 12, 2007, at Britthaven of Havelock. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at her home. Mrs. Cratch was born in Beaufort County on March 26, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Johnnie and Vastha Dixon Ecklin. On Dec. 25, 1939, she married Walter S. Cratch, who preceded her in death March 5, 1985. She was a housewife and farmer. She was a member of Cherry Point Church of Christ. Survivors include one daughter, Margie Jackson of Havelock; two sons, Robert Cratch of Galax, Va., and Walter Cratch of Chocowinity and one brother, John Ecklin of Savannah, Ga. Herman Theodore Crawford, Jr.

Mr. Herman Theodore Crawford, Jr., 70, of Chocowinity, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at Hilton Head Island, S.C. A private family service was held on Hilton Head Island. Mr. Crawford was born in Swepsonville on Jan. 31, 1937. He was the son of the late Lexie Horne Crawford and Herman Theodore Crawford. He was married to Audrey Crawford, who survives. He was a member of Cypress Landing Golf Club. Survivors include two sons, Teddy Crawford of Graham, and Patrick Crawford of Burlington; three sisters, Barbara Schronce of Graham, Alma Robinson of Burlington, and Janet Hunter of Blackstone, Va.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. James A. Crawford, 81, Parkway Lake Drive, Orlando, died Sunday, Aug. 19. Mr. Crawford was a maintenance engineer for New York City Transit Authority. Born in Chocowinity, N.C., he moved to Central Florida in 1991. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mabel Crawford

Mabel Crawford, 85, of Atlantic City, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999 in Shore Memorial Hospital of Somers Point. Mrs. Crawford was born in Chocowinity, North Carolina and attended the local public school system. She came to Atlantic City in the early 1940's and worked at various hotels as a chambermaid and was lastly employed in the private sector. She was a current member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church of Atlantic City, where she served as church Mother. Survivors are five nieces, Yvonne Norris of Trenton, Maxine Walker of Pleasantville, Belinda Dillihay, Lucille Haley, & Alza Goodman of Atlantic City; one adopted daughter & host of cousins, great nieces & nephews & great aunts. Mrs. Lou Lancaster Creasman, 88, of 625 Lee Drive, Havelock, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, Washington, with the Rev. James Gurkins officiating. Entombment will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Alton Lancaster Jr., Terry Lancaster, Johnny Leggett, Chris Johner, Gilbert Barker and Louis Peaden will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Creasman was born in Craven County on Jan. 18, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Jacob C. and Orpha Lewis Lancaster. On March 29, 1960, she married Thomas Lee Creasman, who preceded her in death Jan. 27, 2003. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two sisters, Stella L. Haddock of the Black Jack community of Greenville and Ethel L. Campbell of Washington and two brothers, Alton Lancaster of Washington and William B. Lancaster of Lexington. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jacob “Jack” Cleveland Lancaster. Ella Credle of the 3900 block of Omohundro Ave. died July 6, 2000. Born in Belhaven, N.C., she was the daughter of Jasper and Viola Green and the widow of Jessie L. Credle. Mrs. Credle is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Arthur, Sheila Robinson and Hattie Credle; three sons, Jessie Credle Jr., Warren Credle and James Credle; a sister, Martha May; two brothers, Jasper Green Jr. and Billy Green; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Francis Swindell Credle, 93, of 27057 U.S. Highway 264, Belhaven, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 at the Soule Cemetery with Craig Hagen officiating. Mr. Credle was born in Hyde Co. on October 23, 1914 to the late Herman Gray Credle and Mary Swindell Credle. In September 1936 he married Mary Harris who preceded him in death on July 10, 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Carawan of Pantego and Patsy C. Newman of Pantego; two sons, Jerry Credle of Pensacola, Fla. and Blount Credle of Duson, La.; one brother, Walter Gray Credle of Englehard; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, two great grandsons, four brothers and three sisters. Patience Jordan Credle

Patience Jordan Credle, 82, passed away Friday, Jan. 21, 2005. Patience was born in Belhaven, N.C., on Sept. 29, 1922. After graduating from high school, she received her BS degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1945, she married Clifton M. Credle. They lived in many places while Cliff served in the Navy and retired in Yorktown, Va., where Patience taught at York High School. She and Cliff moved to Belhaven, N.C., for a second retirement in 1977. In 1999, they moved to the Chesapeake Retirement Community where Patience lived until her death. Patience was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Clifton Credle, Sr. She is survived by her sons, Clifton Jr. and his wife, LaRue Credle, of Poquoson and Samuel Credle and his wife, Nan, of League City, Texas; grandsons, Clifton (Chip) Credle and his fiance, Stacey Bull, of Burke, Va., and Andrew Credle of League City, Texas; and one sister, Lil Carowan of Belhaven, N.C. She was a retired private duty nurse and a member of Order of the Eastern Star No. 243, American Red Cross, Order of the Amaranth Count No. 24 and Central Baptist Church. Survivors: three sons, H.L. Charles Phillip Creech

PRINCETON - Charles Phillip Creech, Major USAF, retired, age 68, formerly of Grantsboro, died Thursday evening in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born April 20, 1938, in Durham, he was a son of the late William Aaron and Eva Inez Peele Creech and was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise E. M. Creech. Major Creech served during the Vietnam War as a part of the “Wild Weasels.” He was a member of the Pamlico County Chapter of the VFW, the Creek Point Sportsman’s Association, where he served as secretary and treasurer for 12 years, and was a proud member of the NRA. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home. Graveside services, with military honors, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in the Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, N.C. The Rev. Jimmy Earp and the Rev. Patricia Arrowood will be officiating. Liddie was a past member of the Oak Creek Assembly of God and transferred to Fond du Lac Assembly of God in 1996. Mrs. Crisp was born May 29, 1929, in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Thomas H. Evans and Mamie Haddock Evans. She was married to Bonnie McCoy Crisp, who survives. Mrs. Crisp lived a life of sacrifice. What she did not have on earth, she now has in heaven for eternity with her Savior, Jesus Christ. Instead of waiting on everyone else, she is now being waited upon. Instead of stress and grief, she now has peace and joy. She was a founding member of the Washington Assembly of God Church. Many, many people knew her as the little lady that greeted them at Wal-Mart for the past 15 years and cashed them out many years before that at Tru-Value Hardware. We knew her as wife, mother and grandmother, loving mother-in-law and friend. We grieve, not for her, but for ourselves and how we will miss her. For her, we rejoice and look forward to our reunion in the sweet bye and bye. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crisp is survived by two daughters, Sandra Crisp Martin and her husband, Johnnie E. Mrs. Crisp was born in Craven County on July 6, 1917 to the late David and Fannie Mae Toler and on Nov. 18, 1933 she married Samuel David Crisp who preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1982. She was a member of the 15th Street Church of God and was previously employed by the King Chicken. Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Louise Barker of Garland, Blanche Cox of Washington; a son, Samuel Howard Crisp of Washington; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. James Roy Crisp, Sr.

Mr. James Roy Crisp, Sr., age 81, known to many who loved him as “Friday,” of 1463 Gerard Lane, Blounts Creek, NC, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at his youngest son’s home. Mr. Crisp was born in Beaufort county on March 31, 1925. He was the son of the late Thomas and Carrie Brown Crisp. Mr. Crisp was a dedicated husband and father, married 56 years to Ethel Colville Crisp, who survives. He was a retired service technician for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Kinston and retired employee of Washington Wal-Mart. Mr. Crisp was a faithful member of The Church of God of Prophecy in Washington, NC. Mr. Crisp loved fishing, crabbing, woodworking and gardening. He was loved by many and will be truly missed by all. Survivors include two sons, James Roy Crisp, Jr. and Richard Glenn Crisp of Washington; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Bobby Gene Crisp of Blounts Creek; and three sisters, Mildred Lawrence of Greenville, Anne Hoell of Otto, NC and Arlene Crisp of Greenville. Mrs. Cullifer was born in Beaufort County, March 5, 1918, daughter of the late Howell W. and Edith Warner Midyette. Mrs. Cullifer was a member of the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church. She was married to Statz Daniel Cullifer, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include four sons: Statz Daniel Cullifer, Jr. of Portsmouth, Va., Travis L. Cullifer oif Chesapeake, Va., Albert E. Cullifer of Chesapeake, Va. and Christopher D. Deloris Allen Cuthrell

Mrs. Deloris Allen Cuthrell, age 82, a resident of 9545 N.C. Hwy. 99 North, Pantego died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at her home. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006 at the Pike Road Church of Christ officiated by Bryan Copeland and Paul Prashnick. Burial will follow in the Davis Cemetery in the Pungo area of Pantego. Curtis Fletcher, Charles Fletcher, Stephen Fletcher, Harry Giles, Buster Manning and Maurice Manning will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Cuthrell was born in Beaufort County on June 13, 1924 daughter of the late Mirrell Lee Allen and Catherine Allen. She was a graduate of Pantego High School. Mrs. Cuthrell married Keith Coniston Cuthrell, Sr. on December 29, 1945, who survives. She was a faithful member of Pike Road Church of Christ and actively served the Pungo River Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Friends of the John A. Wilkinson Building and Ye Olde Academy. Mrs. Cuthrell was the co-owner of Cuthrell’s Frames and Things. She spent her life serving and caring for her family, her community and the church. Surviving along with her husband, is a daughter: Doraine C. Smith and her husband Chester of Smithton; two sons: Keith C. Cuthrell, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Virginia Beach, VA and Robby Dale Cuthrell and his wife Cynthia of Bath; nine grandchildren: Shanna Smith Galicia and husband John, Darren Reeves Smith and wife Angie, Dr. Rachel Cuthrell Lee and husband Robert, Lydia Cuthrell Onofrei and husband Cristian, Jesse Lane Cuthrell and wife Brittany, Robby Quinn Cuthrell, Christina Hazel Cuthrell, Catherine Allen Cuthrell and Caitlyn Johannah Cuthrell. Mrs. Cuthrell is also survived by three great-grandchildren: John Allen Galicia, Asher Lee and Micah Lee. She was preceded in death by a sister: Clara Allen Watson and a brother: Edward Lee Allen. Emmett M. Cuthrell

Emmett M. Cuthrell, 81, of the 700 block of Rosewell Ave., a retired electrician, passed away at the home of his son in Gates, N.C., on Aug. 24, 1994. Mr. Cuthrell was born in Belhaven, N.C., and was the widower of Mary Brooks Cuthrell. He retired from civil service at NOB in 1966 after 30 years of service. He was a member of Virginia Beach Freewill Baptist Church and attended Reynoldson Baptist Church in Gates. Survivors include a son, Wayne M. Cuthrell of Gates, N.C.; two sisters, Laney Gentry of Wades Point, N.C. and Agnes Tucker of Saline, Calif.; a brother, Leland Cuthrell of Chesapeake; a granddaughter, Helen E. Cuthrell of Chesapeake; and two great-grandchildren, Tiffany H. Ellis and Summer L. Ellis, both of Chesapeake. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Rick Durham. BLOUNTS CREEK - Nathan Benford Cuthrell, age 25, a resident of 25 Poplar Drive, Blounts Creek, NC died Monday, February 16 at his home. Betsy Brickell Cutler

Betsy Brickell Cutler, 86, of Farm Drive, died Nov. 30, 1990, in a Norfolk hospital.. Mrs. Cutler, a native of Beaufort County, was a retired grocery store owner. She was the widow of Fred A. Cutler and a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Thelma C. Dolacky of Havelock, Diana C. Spivey of Elizabeth City and Lina C. Warden of Kingsport, Tenn.; a sister, Pat Tripp of Morehead City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Robert Poole. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, N.C. Bobby James Cutler

Mr. Bobby James Cutler, 50, of 110 Garrett Ave., Bath, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, with David Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Arthur Credle Cemetery, Bath. Ronald Lilley, Billy Daniels, Terry Credle, Stanley Brantley, Chris Daniels and Rodney Cordon will serve as pallbearers. Mickey Lee, Norwood Dixon, Robbie Swain and Airman Jordan Michael Paniagua will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Cutler was born July 4, 1956, the son of the late William Merrell Cutler and Hazel Katie Credle Cutler. On July 21, 1986, he married the former Debra Kay Brooks, who survives. He was a commercial fisherman and co-owner of The Crab Ranch. He was a member of St. Clair’s Hunting Club. Survivors include one brother, William Merrell Cutler Jr. of Bath and two sisters, Doris Jean Cutler Brown of Gloucester, Va., and Ann Cutler. Dallas P. Cutler

SMITHFIELD - Dallas P. Cutler, 69, of Smithfield departed this world to join our Lord on March 12, 1997. He was born in Bath, N.C., and was a resident of the Peninsula for 49 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired from the Newport News Shipyard, and was a member of the Northampton Church of Christ, the St. Tammany Masonic Lodge, the Khedive Shriners, and the Red and White Hat Club. He was an avid lover of family, hunting, fishing and all sports. He is survived by his loving wife, June F. Cutler; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn P. Cutler Sr. and Kathy Cutler and Donald P. Cutler and Marlene Cutler, all of Hampton; two grandchildren, Glenn P. Cutler Jr. and Kelly Cutler; two sisters, Marjorie Randall of Hampton and Lou Thomas of Gloucester; and also, many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Riverside Funeral Home on Friday, March 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Riverside Funeral Home Chapel and burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park. James Jarvis Cutler, Jr.

James Jarvis Cutler, Jr., 83, died Friday, September 27, 2002. Born in Beaufort County, N.C., he had lived in Virginia Beach since 1948. After Navy service during World War II, Mr. Cutler worked 20 years Civil Service at the Norfolk Navy Yard and the Cherry Point Marine Corps Base until he retired in 1974. Survivors include four daughters, Anita Charnock of Hampton, Juanita Fritzler of Belhaven, N.C., Vera Parrish of Edmond, Okla., and Tammy Hannum of Poquoson; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Zion Episcopal Church, Washington, N.C., after which there will be a graveside service at 12 noon in the church cemetery with Rev. NEWPORT NEWS - Marion L. "Dick" Cutler, Sr., 66, died Tuesday, June 27, in his home. A native of Bath, Beaufort County, N.C., Mr. Cutler was a Peninsula resident for 29 years. He was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ, Bath, and Charitable Brotherhood Lodge No. 1, Washington, N.C. Mr. Cutler retired from the power house division of Newport News Shipbuilding in 1986 after 21 years' service. Survivors include his wife, Marcia Moore Cutler; one daughter, Debra Cutler Bridgman of Newport News; one son, Marion Leroy Cutler Jr. of Carrollton; two sisters, Marjorie Cutler Randall and Lou Cutler Thomas, both of Hampton; two brothers, Giles H. Cutler of Bath and Dallas P. Cutler of Smithfield; four grandchildren, one step-grandchild, and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight in Peninsula Funeral Home. Russell A. Cutler

Mr. Russell Allen Cutler, age 65, a resident of 24178 N.C. Hwy. 32 North, Plymouth, died Sunday, February 26, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, conducted by Rev. Leroy Cutler. Mr. Cutler’s nephews will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Cutler was born in Plymouth, N.C. on October 16, 1940. He was the son of the late Leonard Leroy Cutler and Rosa Respess Cutler. Mr. Cutler was a graduate of Pantego High School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked in the Parts Department of Lee Chevrolet in Washington for many years. Mr. Cutler was a knife and gun collector. He enjoyed working as a gunsmith. Mr. Cutler was a NASCAR fan with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. his favorite driver. In 1987, Mr. Cutler married the former Karen Kaye Hulon, who survives. Surviving with his wife are a sister, Betty Lee of Washington; two brothers, Rev. Leroy Cutler of Jacksonville, Fla.; Fred Cutler of Pinetown; an aunt, Margie Respess Swain of Washington; and number loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Cutler was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Cutler.
