Olive Pinkham Dail
Olive Pinkham Dail, 90, of the 5000 block of Wesleyan Drive and Edenton, N.C., died Dec. 26, 1996, in Brighton Gardens, Virginia Beach. She was a bank clerk for Peoples Bank of Edenton, N.C., and retired in 1965 after 30 years of service. Born in Beaufort County, N.C., she was the widow of George I. Dail and a member of United Methodist Church of Edenton, N.C. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. John Dailey, Jr.
Mr. John “Dad” Dailey, Jr., 77, died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home, Washington. A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Mr. Dailey was born in Beaufort County on Feb. 15, 1929. He was the son of the late Sadie and John Dailey Sr. He attended the Beaufort County schools. He was an Army veteran. He worked with B.E. Singleton Co., Washington, and Osprey Crab Co., Chocowinity. Survivors include one daughter, Christine D. Hyman of Greenville; one stepdaughter, Glenda Dailey of Washington; three sons, Clifton Minor and Roy Dailey, both of Washington, and Karl Dailey of Greenville; one stepson, Steven Minor of Williamston; one brother, Richard Dailey of Durham; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Luella Dailey. The family will receive friends at the home of Zelma Dailey, 773 N.C. Highway 171 North, Washington. Danny Ray Daniels
BELHAVEN - Mr. Danny Ray Daniels, age 35, a resident of 596 Pamlico Beach Road, West, Belhaven, NC died Saturday, November 25, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident. A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 28 2000, at the Pamlico Beach Community Cemetery at Ryder Hill officiated by Rev. David Linton. Michael Daniels, Henry Foster, Jr., Carl Foster, Jr., Richard Voliva Curtis Wayne Wilkins and David Smith will serve as pallbearers. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers: Frank Daniels, Ruben Braddy, Dewayne Hopkins, Clyde Kirk, Paul Hopkins, W. G. Roberson, Don Quidley, Robert Fulford, Johnnie "Butter Ball" Foster, Billy Daniels, III, Jamie "Bumper" Daniels, Ronnie Moore and Frank Washburn. Danny was born in Martin County on March 3, 1965, son of Masceo E. Daniels and Cecilia Gibbs Daniels. He was a commercial fisherman and a member of Bayview Community Church. Survivors include Danny's mother Cecilia G. Daniels of Chocowinity; his father and step-mother, Masceo E. and Theresa Daniels of Belhaven; his fiancee, Nancy A. Lillie Fulford Daniels
Lillie Fulford Daniels, 91, of the 8200 block of McCloy Road, died April 17, 1992, in her home. Mrs. Daniels was born in Beaufort County, N.C. She was the widow of John William Daniels. Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Wright and Audrey Mashburn; a son, Elrice D. Daniels; and a sister, Edith Erickson, all of Norfolk; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Wades Point Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pamlico Beach, N.C. Burial will be in Ryder Hill Cemetery, Pamlico Beach. Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, N.C. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday. Eunice Smith Darden
Eunice Smith Darden, 90, widow of Rufus Edward Darden, died May 21, 2001. Born in Pantego, N.C., she was a graduate of Duke University and a former high school teacher. Mrs. Darden was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church. Survivors include her brother, Dr. C. Timothy Smith, a niece, Margot Smith Pilara, and her two sons, Scott and Stephen, all of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a nephew, Rosser Edward Bryant of Franklin; and a grand-niece, Susan Elaine Bryant of Boca Raton, Fla. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Buckhorn Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Allen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Linda Brinn Tingle Darden
Mrs. Linda Brinn Tingle Darden, age 66, a resident of 1270 Slatestone Road, Washington, died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington conducted by Dr. Tommy Denton. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington. Mrs. Darden’s nephews will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Darden was born in Beaufort County on March 23, 1941. She was the daughter of the late David Buchanan Brinn and Margaret (Maggie) Keech Brinn. Mrs. Darden was a homemaker. She was a member of the Faith Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Darden was a long time member of the Washington Moose Lodge where she received honors in the Academy of Friendship and College of Regency. She loved her grandchildren and Bingo. On May 25, 1980, Mrs. Darden married Clarence Brady Darden, Sr., who survives. Surviving with her husband are her children, Sherry Tingle Toler and her husband, Reggie, Stacy Tingle Lee and her husband, Phil, Winfield Scott Tingle, II all of Washington, Brady Darden of Fayetteville, Bill Darden and wife, Faye of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Irene B. Dixon of Garner; a brother, David Warren Brinn of Belhaven; and five grandchildren, Brandy Lee, Reggie Toler, Jeffrey Toler and wife, Lauren, Joshua Lee and Allen Darden. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Darden was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell H. Brinn, D. Frank Brinn and Wilbur T. Brinn; and two sisters, Ida B. Harrington and Annie Laura B. Tetterton. Thomas Pollard Darracott, Jr.
Thomas Pollard Darracott, Jr., age 80, a resident of 2437 Trent Street, North Charleston, SC, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. Mr. Darracott was the son of the late Thomas Pollard Darracott and Lillian Vernon Stewart Darracott. He graduated from Washington High School and the Citadel and served in the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal and the WW II Victory Medal. He was organist for the Christian Science Church in Charleston, SC for a period of time. Survivors include Betty Stewart and L. Stewart Rumley of Washington; Julie Rumley Hill of Greensboro, NC; Paul, Charles and Lawrence Davenport of Pactolus. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Darracott. Marjorie Janise Daughtrey
Marjorie Janise Daughtrey, 77, of the 1400 block of Loose Strife Place, died Oct. 29, 2000, in Chesapeake. Mrs. Daughtrey was born in Washington, N.C., and was the daughter of the late William B. and Willie Mae Wynn Barber. She was a member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church in Chesapeake. Survivors include her husband, Alvah ''Bud'' Daughtrey; a son, Michael A. Daughtrey and his wife, Gwendolyn Ann, of Moyock, N.C.; two grandchildren, Michael Jason Daughtrey and Matthew Todd Daughtrey; two sisters, Nell Wilson of Chesapeake and Stella Gurganus of Plymouth, N.C.; a brother, Clarence J. Barber; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Thompson. Mildred Cutler Daughtridge
Mildred, affectionately known to her grandchildren and many friends as “Goggy,” died on Sunday, March 26, 2006, at East Alabama Medical Center in Auburn, Ala. She was born in Beaufort County on November 16, 1916, and was the daughter of Millie Mayo and Fenner Bradford Cutler. She was married for 53 years to Charles Edward Daughtridge, who preceded her in death. Her dear friend and sister was the late Mary Ella Jarman. Mildred loved life! She always enjoyed dancing and continued to dance even at her most recent home at Monarch Estates in Auburn. Mildred loved people and never met a stranger. Her personality was magnetic and her grandchildren admired her spunk. She was an active life-long member of the First Christian Church of Washington. She was very involved in the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She had a deep faith in the Lord and loved serving Him. Mildred was cherished by her family and they made many happy memories. She is survived by her daughter, Milly D. Greene and husband, John, and grandson, John F. Greene Jr. of Auburn, Ala.; a granddaughter, Bradford Phelan and husband, Stephen, and great-grandson, Ford, of San Diego, Calif. She is also survived by a nephew, William F. Jarman Jr. and wife, Dava, of Raleigh, and daughter, Ellie, of Columbia, S.C. A private graveside service will be held. A memorial service and celebration of Mildred’s life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday March 30, 2006, at the First Christian Church in Washington. Albert Davenport
Mr. Albert “Ray” Davenport, age 58, a resident of 265 South Wharton Station Road of Washington, died Saturday, April 29 2006 at his home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by the Rev. Dianne B. Catlett. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. The following will serve as pallbearers: Robert Diggs, Billy Davenport, Jr., Steve Davenport, Michael Davenport, J.D. Davenport and Bruce Nobles. Mr. Davenport was born in Beaufort County on December 26, 1947. He was the son of the late Johnny Richard Davenport, Sr. and Birdie Elizabeth Garris Davenport. Mr. Davenport worked at Abrams Restaurant, Fifth Street Shell and Holiday Inn. He was a member of Wharton Trinity United Methodist Church. On September 14, 1975, Mr. Davenport married the former Elsie Faye Boyd, who survives. Surviving with his wife are two brothers, Billy Davenport and James Henry Davenport both of Washington; and three sisters, Frances Nobles of Washington Park, Glenda Ingalls and Doris Dellinger both of Washington. Ms. Helen Carmen Davenport, 40, a resident of 8124 N.C. Highway 33 South, Aurora, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at her home. No services will be held at this time. Ms. Davenport was born in Texarkana, Texas, on Sept. 9, 1966. She was the daughter of Angela Turnage and the late J.C. Turnage. Mr. Walter G. Davenport, 68, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. A private memorial service will be held to celebrate his life. Mr. Davenport was born May 13, 1939, the son of the late Warren Davenport and Orpha Davenport McLaughlin. He was married to Janice Davenport of Washington, who survives. Ms. Anthonette D. “Toni” Davis, 48, of 1029 A, City Park Ave., Portsmouth, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington. Ms. Davis was born in Portsmouth, Va., the daughter of John Davis Sr. and the late Louise Davis. She had been employed as an appointment clerk at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She was a member of Prentice Park Seven Day Adventist, Portsmouth, Va. Survivors include one daughter, Serena Davis of Portsmouth, Va.; two sisters, Queen Spruill of Petersburg, Va., and Veronica Washington of Elizabethtown; one brother, John Davis Jr. of Portsmouth, Va.; stepmother, Alice Davis of Portsmouth, Va.; two stepsisters, Jane Allen of Richmond, Va., and Delores Oliver of New Jersey. David “Isaiah” Davis, 25, of 231 Biggs Road, Washington, died Monday, January 16, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, Thursday, January 19, 2006 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at the home of his parents, David T. and Rose M. Davis, 6911 NC Hwy 99 South, Belhaven, NC. Isaiah was born April 16, 1980 in Beaufort County. He was the son of David T. Davis, Jr. and Rose M. Davis. He lived in Beaufort County all of his life. He attended Northside High School. Isaiah was self-employed in construction. He was very interested in dog rescue and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and cooking. He attended Bethany Methodist Church. He is also survived by the love of his life, Katie Lynne Burbage of Washington; his maternal grandfather, Muriel Moore, Sr. of Bath; his paternal grandparents, David Tex Davis, Sr. and Metta Selby Davis of Belhaven; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and too many special friends to count. Isaiah was preceded in death by his brother, Kristopher Shane Davis in 1989 and his maternal grandmother, Betty Cox Moore in 2002. Isaiah – our son, our buddy, our friend. He touched more lives in 25 years than most people could in 100. He may not have realized the impact he made on all of us, but we are forever changed because of him. Elsie K. Davis, 66, of the 200 block of Falcon Ave., a retired music teacher for the Norfolk public schools, passed away at home on April 10, 1995, surrounded by family and friends. Mrs. Davis was born in Bath, N.C., and was a member of Bath Christian Church. She was the widow of Jessie H. Davis. Survivors include a son, Joel N. Davis of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Janice Kemp of Chesterfield, Va. and Elva Richardson of Williamsburg, Va.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Geraldine Mackey Davis
Mrs. Geraldine Mackey Davis, 52, of 203 Clifton Park, Cowell Farm Road, Washington, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Washington County Hospital, Plymouth. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in St. James Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Belhaven, with Elder Barry James officiating. Burial will follow in Northside Cemetery, Belhaven. Mrs. Davis was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 8, 1953. She was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Ebron Mackey and William Edward Mackey. She earned a GED. She was employed with Mel’s Diner in Pantego as a chef. She was a member of St. James Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Belhaven, where she served as a choir member. Survivors include three sons, Phillip Mackey and Sean Davis, both of Washington, and Toshua Davis of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Debra Williams of Washington; two brothers, James Mackey of Pinetown, and Benny Mackey of Washington, and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Mackey Freeman and Hattie Ruth Davis and two brothers, Henry Mackey and Calvin Mackey. Hubert Lee Davis, 66, of 1027 Old Wood St., Chesapeake, 23324, died Nov. 24, 1998. Born in Beaufort County, N.C., he retired as a machinist for Southland Industries. He was predeceased by his parents, Sorthonia and Woodrow Davis. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn J. Davis; daughters, Carolyn L. Pearson, Lisa Bell, Nicole Bell, all of Chesapeake; a son, Randy Murray; sisters, Gladys Wiggins of Chesapeake, Joyce Perry of Norfolk and Sharon James of Virginia Beach; brothers, Andre Davis of New York and John Davis of Chesapeake; and grandchildren, Brandon Pearson and Brittney Pearson, both of Chesapeake. Hubert Phillip Davis
BELHAVEN - Hubert Phillip Davis, 76, of the Ponzer Community, Belhaven, died Saturday, November 21 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born March 6, 1922 in Echols County, Ga., he was the son of the late Lessie and Ada Zeigler Davis. He was married to the former Edith Batterson. A U.S. Army veteran, Davis served his country and was discharged as sergeant; was a member of the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and deacon. He was a member of the Ponzer Ruritan Club. He was a retired commercial truck driver and retired to Hyde County in the early 1980's from Richmond, Va. Surviving are his wife, Edith Batterson Davis; a daughter, Shirley Ann D. Good and husband Ralph of Deland, Fla.; a brother, Emory Davis of Valdosta, Ga.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Warren, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. James Allen Davis
BELHAVEN, N.C. - James Allen Davis, 70, formerly of the Peninsula, died Thursday, Feb. 2, in Pungo District Hospital. He was a native of Beaufort County, N.C. and resident of Williamsburg and Newport News for 36 years. A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, he retired as electrician foreman from U.S. Naval Supply Station Cheatham Annex after 30 years service. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lillian Harroll Spry Davis; two daughters; two sons; and 10 grandchildren. Lucille Tripp Davis
RALEIGH - Lucille Tripp Davis 96, died on January 6, 2001 at Bon Secours Retirement Community Chester, VA. She was the widow of the late Hubert A. Davis, former vice president and secretary of the Occidental Life Insurance Company. Mrs. Davis was born in Bonnerton Beaufort County, NC, the daughter of the late Robert Edward Tripp, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Bonner Tripp. She was preceded in death by brother, Robert E. Tripp, Jr. and sister, Allien Tripp Humphrey. She graduated from Blackstone College for Girls, Blackstone, VA in 1924, and was a resident of Raleigh for more than 70 years. She was an active member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, working in the Sunday School for 17 years, and on the Board of Trustees, and many other committees of the church. She served in the United Methodist Women as the treasurer of the North Carolina Conference Women's Society, treasurer of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Women's Society, and as a member of the Women's Division of the National Board of Missions of the Methodist Church. She was also active in the PTA of Myrtle Underwood Elementary School and Needham B. Broughton High School; and was a past president of the Raleigh YWCA. Mrs. Davis is survived by two children, Hubert A. Davis, Jr. and wife Gaynelle of Midlothian, VA and Patricia D. Burgess and husband, Dewey of Rockville, MD. She is also survived by seven grandchildren seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church Raleigh, NC. The Davis family will receive friends in the church parlor at 12:15 until time of service. Private family interment at Montlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Tessie McNeal Mann Davis, 51, of 24545 U.S. Highway 264 East, Pantego, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Mrs. Davis was born in Harrisburg, Pa., on Dec. 26, 1956. She was the daughter of the late Luther B. and Willie Mae Burrus McNeal. She was a graduate of the class of 1974 at Mattamuskeet High School in Hyde County. She did further studies at Beaufort County Community College in nursing assistance. On Sept. 6, 1998, she married James Thomas Davis, who survives. She was employed in healthcare services at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven and Britthaven Nursing Home in Washington. She was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ). Survivors include one daughter, Patrice Mann of Grimesland; one son, Donell Mann of Wendell; two stepsons, Sean Davis of Pantego and Toshua Davis of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Ronald McNeal of Scranton; two sisters, Diane Rodgers of Washington and Lucinda Lovick of Scranton; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict and receiving the Purple Heart. Mr. Davis retired as a supervisor with Dimon Tobacco Co. He was a member of Bath Christian Church. Mr. James Allen “Buddy” Dawson, 82, of 807 Washington St., Washington, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital. ZEBULON - Mildred Winstead Dawson, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was called to her heavenly home on March 3, 2005. Mildred was born October 16, 1908 in Winsteadville, Beaufort County, NC, the daughter of the late William Franklin and Georgia Pedrick Winstead. Mildred graduated from Pantego High School on June 7, 1927 and then went to East Carolina Teachers College where she graduated June 2, 1930 with a degree in primary education. She taught school in Bath, North Carolina and then in Zebulon, North Carolina. She met her husband, Robert (Bob) W. Dawson in Zebulon and they were married May 24, 1936 at Pamlico Beach, her parents summer home. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Dawson; her parents, William Franklin and Georgia Pedrick Winstead; her brother, Ellis G. Winstead and her sisters, Rhoda Winstead Gill, Katie Winstead Wharton and Olive Winstead. She is survived by daughters, Mimi Dawson Kelly and husband, Bob of Apex, Emma Kay Wallace and husband, Jim of Skippers, VA and Robbie Sue Crumpler and husband, Wayne of Elm City; four grandchildren, Kelly Proctor and wife, Kathy, Nikki Tompkins and husband, Danny, Tonya Summerlin and husband, Paul and Tara Crumpler; six great-grandchildren, Parks and Sydney Tompkins, Emma Jane and Dawson Proctor and Annah Claire and Lawson Summerlin; sister, Mary Elizabeth Politis and husband, Charles of Ft. WASHINGTON, N.C. - Mr. William Hawkins "Billy" Dawson, Jr., 83, a resident of Washington, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Beaufort County Hospital. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Dr. James Hagwood and the Rev. Keith Hudson. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Mr. Dawson was born in Washington on June 11, 1924. He was the son of the late William H. Dawson Sr. and Roxie Anna Wagoner Dawson. Mr. Dawson was a 1942 graduate of Washington High School. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Dawson was a tobacconist working as a mental calculator for several tobacco markets. He served as Sales Supervisor for the Washington Tobacco Market for several years. Later, Mr. Dawson owned and operated W. H. Dawson Jr. Accounting. He was a member, trustee and deacon of the Riverview Baptist Church. Mr. Dawson was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and Church choir. On Sept. 19, 1946, Mr. Dawson married the former Becky Paramore, who preceded him in death, June 6, 1989. On Feb. 3, 1990, Mr. Dawson married Juanita Henries Cherry, who survives. Surviving with his wife are two sons, William H. "Bill" Dawson III and wife, Camilla, Lee Dawson and wife, Rita, all of Washington; a daughter, Gail Dawson Pinkham and husband, Tim, of Washington; a stepson, Jimmy Cherry and Beverly of Washington; a stepdaughter, Lucy Cherry Grist and husband, the Rev. In 1992, she married Emory Jack Dennard Jr. who preceded her in death. Mrs. Dennard was a member of the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church and was active in the John A. Wilkinson Foundation. Mrs. Lucille Edwards Carowan Dibble, age 75, of Washington, NC, died Monday, November 6, 2006 at her home. Mrs. Dibble was born in Chocowinity on January 18, 1931, daughter of the late William Thomas Edwards and Muzette Wells Edwards. She graduated from Chocowinity High School in 1948. She had been a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church since 1950. She taught preschool for twelve years, served two terms as president of the Women’s Mission Union, taught Sunday School for two years, and supervised the Sunday morning nursery for ten years. She was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class. Her dedication to the community is evidenced in her fifteen-year career at John Cotten Tayloe School, serving the local Board of Education for three terms and serving on the Salvation Army Advisory Board for two-and-a-half terms as secretary. She chaired a bond issue to fund Beaufort County Technical Institute’s first library and chaired the College Parallel Committee for seven years to make the transition from Technical Institute to Community College. She served the Washington Housing Authority for thirty years. During that time, she served as vice chairman and chairman. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Clarence B. Carowan, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Lewis Dibble, and four daughters, Gladys Carowan Howell and her husband, Gus; Clarissa Carowan Phillips and her husband, Charles, of Washington; Mary Carowan Mertz and her husband, Bob, of Durham; and Martha Carowan Zito and her husband, Dave, of Matthews; brother Alvin Edwards of Blounts Creek and sister Mary Briskin of Arlington, VA; four grandchildren, George Howell, Ben Howell, Chuck Phillips and Carly Phillips; and one great grandchild, Cameron Bennett Howell. Mrs. Dixon was born in Bath, daughter of the late James and Mary Sawyer, and the sister of the late Naomi Smith. She was the widow of William Earl Dixon. Mrs. Dixon was retired from the W.T. She was also a long-time member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ in Jarvisburg, a life-long Sunday School teacher and youth leader. Mrs. Dixon was born June 15, 1939, daughter of the late Elmer Huron Woolard and Julia Elizabeth Sullivan Woolard. On October 18, 1958, she married Norwood E. Dixon who survives. She was a homemaker. Dixon, Jr., Christopher Gerome Dixon and Lesleigh Dixon Manning; her grandchildren: Julia Lacey Dixon, Norwood Eugene Dixon, III, Caroline Elizabeth Manning, Emily Chris Manning and Charles Hodges Manning, IV and her brothers and sisters: Isabelle Woolard Queijo, Mable Woolard Alligood, Julia Hollis Woolard and Jasper Evan Woolard. Mr. Merrian Andrew Dixon Sr., 74, of 9388 NC Hwy. 306 S., Aurora, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Edward Christian Church and will be conducted by Pastor David Linton. Burial will follow in the Dixon Cemetery at White Hill Free Will Baptist Church in the Small community of Aurora. Doug Niethanmer, Bryan Bonner Sr., Joe Bennett, Allen Carrow, Danny Taylor and William Edward Provo will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Dixon was born in Pamlico Co. on Jan. 1, 1933, to the late Andrew Timothy and Belva Lillian Smithwick Dixon. On Sept. 19, 1959, he married Brenda Joyce Heath who survives. He was a 1953 graduate of Aurora High School, was a member of Edward Christian Church and was a member of the Noah Tripp Music Ministries where he ministered in music to several nursing homes in Pamlico and Craven Co. He retired in 1995, after 30 years of service as a mechanic with PCS Phosphate. Mr. Dixon served his country in the United States Navy. Survivors include his wife Brenda of the home; two daughters, Linda D. Hollowell of Greenville, Betty Lynn Dixon Armstrong and husband, Timothy, of Arapahoe; a son, Merrian "Andy" Dixon Jr. and wife, Penny, of Aurora; three grandchildren, Nicholas Cole Hollowell, Hannah Lee Dixon, Samantha Dawn Armstrong; and a godson, James Allen Peele. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lou Dixon; and one brother, Carl Clifton Dixon Sr.. Mr. Milbron Franklin Dixon Sr., 81, of 239 Edwards Road, Chocowinity, died Saturday, December 16, 2006, at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home in Washington. A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, December 18, 2006, at the Dixon family cemetery with the Rev. Henry Horne officiating. Michael Chandler, Mark King, Chris King, Joshua Rea, Joe Stringer and Troy Congleton will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2006, and from 1 p.m. to the funeral hour Monday, December 18, 2006, at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington, and other times at Mr. Dixon’s home. Mr. Dixon was born February 5, 1925, in Pitt County. He was the son of the late Claude Timothy Dixon and Mamie Hill Dixon. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. On May 8, 1944, he married the former Marietta Porter, who preceded him in death on June 12, 2000. He worked for 15 years as an aircraft mechanic at Norfolk Naval Air Station and was a retired farmer. Survivors include his children, Peggy Chandler and her husband, Ruffin, of Wilmar, Milbron Dixon Jr. (Buddy) and his wife, Gloria, Betty Brame and her husband, Herman, and Robin Goff and her husband, Danny, all of Chocowinity; two sisters, Ozell Ward of Williamston and Elma May of Simpson; seven grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Richard Warner Dixon
Mr. Richard Warner Dixon Sr., 70, of Aurora, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, with the Rev. Archie Rivenbark officiating. There will be no graveside service. Mr. Dixon was the son of the late Edgar Dixon and Margaret Dixon Ireland. He was an Air Force veteran. He worked with the New Bern Fire Department for eight years and retired from PCS Phosphate after 21 years of service. He was married to Jennie Dixon, who survives. Survivors include one son, Richard Dixon Jr. of Hickory; two daughters, Denise Mullins of Reelsboro, and Debbie Quidley of Delaware; three stepdaughters, Stacy Long of Plymouth, Angel Crisp of Washington, and Lisa Escobedo of Nashville, N.C.; one grandson, Eric W. Dixon of Reelsboro, who he reared; one sister, Julia Voliva of Vandemere; 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. CHOCOWINITY - Mr. Richard Allen Doiel, age 60, a resident of 300 Nelson Farm Road, Chocowinity, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by the Rev. John Shackleford and the Rev. Gregg Hornbuckle. Burial will follow in the Edward Christian Church cemetery, Edward. The following will serve as pallbearers: Chris Edwards, Bill Armstead, Jimmy Manning, Danny Manning, Paul Avery and Billy J. Avery. Thomas Garris and Timothy Avery will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Doiel was born in Anaheim, Calif., on June 15, 1947. He was the son of Tillie Kathleen Price Cagle, who survives, and the late Howard Craven Cagle. Mr. Doiel attended Morehead City schools. He was a retired commercial construction foreman. Later, Mr. Doiel worked as a long-distance truck driver. He attended the Aurora Church of God as long as his health permitted. On June 17, 1967, Mr. Doiel married the former Patsy Rose Avery, who survives. Surviving with his wife are his son, Michael Craven Doiel of Chocowinity; his daughter, Faith Michelle Doiel of Chocowinity; his grandson, Phillip Richard Alligood of Columbia, S.C.; and his sister, Denise Ann Meyers of Newport, N.C. In addition to his father, Mr. Doiel was preceded in death by a sister, Paula Sherleen Shackleford. Beulah Mae Downs, 79, of the 1100 block of Edgewood Ave., retired owner of Mae's Beauty Shop, died May 23, 1994, in Chesapeake. Born in Chocowinity, N.C., Mrs. Downs retired in 1992 after 30 years. She was a member of Chesapeake First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include her husband, Oliver J. Downs Sr.; three sons, Rohmie O. Downs of Wardensville, W.Va., Harold R. Downs of Chesapeake, Jerry H. Downs of Portsmouth; one sister, Hilda Dixon of Chocowinity; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Wayne Sawyer and the Rev. Nelson Fields. Naomi J. Doyle, 73, of Virginia Avenue, a foreign service officer and personnel director for the State Department, retiring after 25 years of service, died Friday at Memorial Hospital-West Volusia. Mrs. Doyle was born in Washington, N.C., and came here 21 years ago from Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Association of Widowed Persons, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Association of Retired Persons. She enjoyed computers, music, playing cards and reading self-help books. Survivors include a good friend, Roberta Ray, DeLeon Springs, who helped provide for her care. Elloree "Polly" Cox Draper, 73, a senior member of the Beverly Hills Garden Club and member of First Christian Church, both in Alexandria, died of complications from melanoma April 28 at her home in Alexandria. She was born in Washington, N.C., and grew up in Alexandria, where she graduated from George Washington High School. Over the years, she had done volunteer work with the Girl Scouts and Brownies. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, C. Norman "Norm" Draper of Alexandria; three sons, Ron, of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Dennis, of Clifton, Va., and Robert, of Silver Spring; a daughter, Norma Jean Talley of Crosswicks, N.J.; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Mrs. Valeria Womble Drew, 89, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at Sentara Nursing Center in Norfolk, Va. She was the daughter of the late John Henry Womble and Mary Louise Padgett Womble. She was married to John Abner Drew, who preceded her in death in 1963. She had lived in the Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va., area for the past 70 years. She retired from J.C. Penney with 35 years of service. She was a member of Alliance Christian Church in Portsmouth, Va. Survivors include one son, Herbert Martin Drew of Vidalia, Ga.; one daughter, Jacquelyn Louise Drew of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Robert “Bobby” Womble of Washington; three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Linwood Kaffer Womble, Lewis Henry Womble, Thomas C. Womble and John Henry Womble Jr.; and two sisters, Marie Waters and Kathleen Womble. Mrs. Mae Grantham Duke,83, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2007. She was born on January 21, 1924 to the late Elijah M. and Florence Eloy Hester Grantham in Augusta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Benjamin Duke. She is survived by her son, Joseph Benjamin “Skipper” Duke and wife Sylvia of Greenville, NC; her daughter, Ann Duke Cobb and husband Bill of Rocky Mount, NC; her brother Donald Anthony Grantham and wife Carol of Augusta, Georgia; her granddaughters, Jennifer Duke Batten and husband Mitch, Jodi Duke Pandure and husband Ralph of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; her grandsons, Willis Edwin Cobb IV and fiancé Susan Anderson of Raleigh, William Benjamin Cobb and wife Karen of Pinetops; her four great-grandchildren Jackson and Lizzie Batten, Davis and Gracie Pandure of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and her beloved miniature Schnauzer, Dolly. William Leon Dunbar
PANTEGO - Mr. William Leon Dunbar, age 84, of 499 Lake Rd., Pantego, died Monday, April 23, 2007 at Pitt Co. Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007 at Davis Cemetery in the Pungo Community. Rupert Wallace, Pastor Phil Ange and Pastor Walter Taylor will conduct the services. Mr. Dunbar was born in Beaufort Co. on October 11, 1922 to the late Dallas and Ada Allen Dunbar and on July 27, 1965 he married Claudia Joel Lewis who survives. He was a graduate of Plymouth High School, served in the United States Army, 2nd Cavalry during WWII where he was awarded numerous medals for his service and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Union Grove Church of Christ, Belhaven American Legion Post #249, Plymouth VFW Post #04023 and was a charter member, past president and former treasurer of the Pungo River Ruritan Club. Survivors include his wife, Claudia Joel Dunbar of the home; one son, Kenneth A. Dunbar of Pantego; one granddaughter, Laura Ashley Dunbar of Pantego; one brother, Henry O. Dunbar of Southern Pines; two sisters, Virginia H. Tetterton of Plymouth and Hazel H. Ange of Knightdale. Walter Duff Dunn, 76, of the 2600 block of Berkley Ave. Extd., died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Dunn was born in Aurora, N.C., and was a retired heavy equipment mechanic for Higgerson & Buchanan. He was also a member of AARP. He was the son of the late Daniel Duff Dunn and Viola Mae Hodges. He was predeceased by his wife, Clydia May Brinn, and a son, Walter Ray Dunn. He is survived by a son, Charles M. Dunn and his wife, Shirley; four grandchildren, Gerald M. Price of Monroe, N.C., Sandra P. Baldridge of Roanoke, Joyce P. Moore of Asheboro, N.C., Chani Melea McFetridge of Virginia Beach; and also six great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Twiford Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry Napier. Burial will follow in the Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Susan Wirtz Moody DuVal
WASHINGTON, N.C. - The Reverend Deacon Susan Wirtz Moody DuVal, age 63, passed away peacefully in her home in Washington on Friday, October 21, from ovarian cancer. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2005, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity officiated by the Right Rev. Clifton C. Daniel III. There will be a private burial in the Columbarium at a later date. A native of Roanoke Rapids, she was the daughter of the late Hubert C. Wirtz and the late Myrtle L. Wirtz. Sue was very active in the Episcopal Church. She was one of the first deacons to become Archdeacon for the Diocese of East Carolina. While deacon, she first ministered at San Mateo in Yeatesville and then at Trinity Church in Chocowinity. She actively served as a certified spiritual director and was a charter member of the Daughters of the Pamlico Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King. Sue was a past office manager for Pitt County Anesthesia. Her private business was billing for Ballard Medical Management, and she worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. While continuing her education, she worked in the Financial Aid office at Beaufort Community College. Sue's other activities included a past seat on the Ayden Town Council and past position as an officer on the Ayden Rescue Squad for ten years. She was a two-time past president of ElectriCities of North Carolina. Sue enjoyed many warm and loving friendships. It was with friends that she spent her last years involved in quilting, entering competitions and traveling. Her other art interests included stained glass and painting. She was preceded in death by her son, Donovan C. Moody and step-grandson William Renn. She is survived by her husband, Marshall P. DuVal; her son, Eric Moody, his wife René and their daughter, Annalise of Holly Springs; her stepdaughter, Mary Renn and her husband Wayne of Greenville, and their daughter, Elizabeth Renn Harr; her stepson Marc DuVal, his wife Tammy and their son Jackson of Greenville; and her aunt Madeline Kruger and her husband Larry of Roanoke Rapids. Her body will lie in state at Paul Funeral Home in Washington until 3 p.m. on Sunday. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2005, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity and other times at the home located at 813 Isabella Ave., Washington, N.C.
