Aaron Gibbs

Mr. Aaron Gibbs, 74, of 663 Hancock St., Apt. 3, Brooklyn, N.Y., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, at St. John Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in White Oak Chapel Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Bath, with Elder Kirk T. Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Mr. Gibbs was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 21, 1932. He was the son of the late Myrtle Rodgers Gibbs and Matthew Gibbs Sr. He attended the Beaufort County Schools. In 1954, he married Hersey Mann Gibbs, who survives. He worked as a delivery truck driver for Allwood and Stern Express Companies, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a member of White Oak Chapel Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Bath.  Survivors include one daughter, Myrtle Gibbs of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one daughter-in-kind, Nancy Ballard of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five sisters, Isabell Jennette of Washington, Addie Fulcher, Maggie McBride and Annie Riddick, all of Bath, and Audrey Riddick of Pantego; two brothers, Samuel Gibbs of Greenville, and Fredrick A. Gibbs of Germany; and one grandchild.  He was preceded in death by one son, Donnie Gibbs and four brothers, William Gibbs, Matthew Gibbs Jr., Larry Gibbs and Alford Gibbs.  The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Annie Riddick, 668 Bayview Road, Bath.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bobbie Dean Gibbs

SWAN QUARTER - Bobbie Dean GIBBS, 61, of Swan Quarter, died early Friday, August 16, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born in Beaufort County on June 15, 1935, he was the son of Mary Florence O'Neal Gibbs and the late Frank Gibbs. He worked for many years with Mayo Real Estate and Building Contractors prior to his retirement in 1994 as a carpenter. Surviving are his mother, Mary Florence O'Neal Gibbs of Swan Quarter; four brothers: Richard Eugene Gibbs, Archie Lee Gibbs, Elbert Lewis Gibbs, all of Swan Quarter, and Joseph Allen Gibbs of Huntington, Md.; a sister, Mary Louise G. Rivas of Alto, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 19, at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. George T. Gibbs

BELHAVEN - George T. Gibbs died Saturday night here after a long illness.  He was 77 years old.  Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the West Belhaven Church of Christ with the Rev. Pernell Gallop officiating.  Burial followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.  Mr. Gibbs was the son of the late Milton and Mary Spencer Gibbs.  His wife Mrs. Mary B. Gibbs died several years ago.  Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.  Mr. Gibbs was a member of the West Belhaven Church of Christ.  (unknown newspaper but handwritten date 1952)  Kindly submitted by Ruth Pugh Parks.


James Earl Gibbs, Sr.

Mr. James Earl Gibbs Sr., formerly of Bath, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at the home of his brother, Melvin Gibbs, 1710 Wainwright Road, Jamesville.  A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Delight Church of Christ Church with Elder Redden Leggett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Mr. Gibbs was born July 11, 1954, the son of the late Eulouse and Gaynel Satchel Gibbs. He attended the Beaufort County Schools.  Survivors include one daughter, Lela Spencer of Wilmington; three sons, James Gibbs Jr., Christopher Gibbs and Jonathan Gibbs, all of Chocowinity; one sister, Hallie G. Whitfield of Bath; three brothers, Kenneth Satchel of Baltimore, Md., Melvin Gibbs of Jamesville, and Donald Gibbs of Windsor; and three grandchildren.  The body may be viewed today from 2-6 p.m. at Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Washington. Johnny Gibbs, Jr.

Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer Johnny Gibbs, Jr., of the United States Navy, 41, of 21 Threadleaf Terrace, Burlington, New Jersey, died Sunday April 22, 2007, at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Maryland.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday April 28, 2007 in Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Rev. David Ollison will preside over the ceremony and the eulogy will be delivered by Rev. Guylester Harding Jr. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Johnny Gibbs, Jr. was born July 23, 1965 in Washington, NC, to Johnny and Janice Harding Gibbs.  In 1983, Gibbs graduated from Washington High School in Washington, NC. After high school he served actively in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. He received an associate degree at Pitt Community College in Greenville, NC, and later completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Diagnostic Imaging with a concentration in Administration at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.  With a total of twenty four years of dutiful service, both active and reserve, Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer Johnny Gibbs continued to serve our country until his departure. During his service, he carried the torch as unit training officer and as unit career counselor. He was mobilized for Operation Desert Storm and for Operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle. He balanced his military career as a civilian by serving as a Clinical Research Manager for GE Healthcare in Princeton, New Jersey, where he coordinated clinical trials domestically and internationally.  Gibbs was a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons, and was involved in local and global humanitarian efforts.  Johnny Gibbs, Jr. leaves a loving family to cherish his memory: his parents, Johnny and Janice Harding Gibbs of Harding’s Village in Washington, NC; one brother, Reginald Gibbs of Greensboro, NC; and a host of family and friends.  The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, Johnny and Janice Harding Gibbs of Harding’s Village, 4664 U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 Bonner Street, Washington, NC.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Saturday, April 28, 2007)

Marie Johnson Gibbs

Evangelist Marie Johnson Gibbs, 86, resident of 1002 Pierce St., Washington, N.C. died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell, Va.  A funeral will be conducted Wednesday 11 a.m. at Davenport’s Temple Church of God in Christ with Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Evangelist Gibbs was born in Nash County on Feb. 7, 1920 to the late Samuel and Maggie Ricks Johnson. She was educated in the Nash County school system. She was affiliated with the Tar River Church then later with her husband at Cedar Grove Holiness Church where she served faithfully as an evangelist, president of the Missionary Board, musician and in several auxiliaries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bishop Thomas H. Gibbs Sr. two sons, Thomas H. Gibbs Jr. and Danney Gibbs, a daughter, Irene Epps, her siblings, William Johnson and James Johnson, and her dear friend, Missionary Sarah Newkirk.  Survivors are: her children: Bishop Robert Gibbs (Regina) of Spring Hope, N.C.; Sylvester Howard (Janice) of Jacksonville, N.C. Clifton Gibbs (Martha) of Chocowinity, N.C. Elder Dollie Baker (Elder Raymond Baker) of Chester, VA. Dorothy G. Elliot and Patricia Gibbs-Cosely both of Petersburg, Va.; daughter-in-law: Sarah M. Mary Emily Gibbs

Mrs. Mary Emily Gibbs of 312 Gladden St., Washington, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at home.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Mt. Hebron Disciples of Christ Church with Elder Jerome Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Mrs. Gibbs was born Oct. 29, 1919, the daughter of Zebulon Vance Thorne and Lovenia Roberson. She was married to Edward Gibbs, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Mt. Hebron Disciples of Christ Church.  Survivors include two grandchildren and one brother, George Thorne.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Marie Gray; four sisters, Mary Douglas, Alice Thorne Solomon, Bertha Thorne and Hattie Slade and one brother, the Rev. Robert Lee Gibbs

Robert Lee Gibbs of the 2600 block of Yale Court, a retired maintenance worker, died March 7, 1993, in his residence.  Mr. Gibbs was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was retired from the Harvard Apartments. He was the widower of Isnora Gibbs.  Survivors include three sisters, Marie Blackwell of Chesapeake, Hattie Wallace of Boston and Rhader Morris of Manteo, N.C.; and four brothers, the Rev. James Gibbs of Bath, N.C., Edward Gibbs of Washington, N.C., Charlie Gibbs of Allendale, S.C., and James Gibbs of Brooklyn, N.Y.  A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hale Funeral Home. William Gibbs, Jr.

Mr. William “Jr. Gibbs” Gibbs Jr., 80, a resident of Britthaven of Washington, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington.  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Whitfield & Whitley Funeral Home, Washington. Burial will follow in Whitfield & Whitley Cemetery.  Mr. Gibbs was born in Beaufort County on July 27, 1927. He was the son of the late William Gibbs Sr. and Mary C. Ward Gibbs.  Survivors include one daughter, Velma G. Whitehurst of Williamston; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Alice King, 122 E. Zachariah Gibbs

Mr. Zachariah Gibbs, 84, a resident of Cross Creek Nursing Home, Swan Quarter, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Reddick Baptist Church, Belhaven, with the Rev. James Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Whitfield & Whitley Cemetery, Belhaven.  Mr. Gibbs was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Luther and Lemon Gray Gibbs. He attended public schools in Beaufort County. He was a retired truck driver, who drove for local seafood companies. He was an Army veteran.  Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Crowder of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Phillip Ebron of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Hilton Gibbs of Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Mark Gibson

Mark Gibson, 70, of the 400 block of Crescent Drive, died Dec. 22, 1993, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.  Mr. Gibson was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was the son of the late Virgil M. and Mattie May Swindell Gibson. He was a retired Class A Millwright from the Maintenance department of Union Camp Corporation after 36 years of service. Mr. Gibson was a member of Franklin Baptist Church and the Bronco Rod and Gun Club.  Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dupree Gibson; two daughters, Peggy G. Stephenson of Franklin and Loretta G. Barber of Oxnard, Calif.; one son, Joseph R. Gibson of Richmond; one sister, Elsie G. Lindley of Greenville, Tenn. Mr. Gibson was predeceased by one son, Virgil Mark Gibson; nine grandchildren, Kim S. Taylor, Herman Scott Stephenson III, Joseph Mark Stephenson, Melissa R. Stephenson, William Samuel DeLucia, Amy Elizabeth Barber, John H. Barber III, Kate Cenname Gibson, Joseph Cenname Gibson; three great-grandchildren, Gerald Blake Taylor III, Kelley Elizabeth Taylor and Kristen Nicole Stephenson.  A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by Dr. Roy DeBrand and Rev. Shirley Pinkham Gilfix

Shirley Pinkham Gilfix, 55, 204 Rose Drive, Cocoa Beach, died Tuesday. Born in Washington, N.C., she moved to Cocoa Beach from Annapolis, Md., in 1978. She was an executive secretary for American Airlines. She was a member of Cocoa Beach Community Church. Survivors: sons, Thomas, James, both of Cocoa Beach; sister, Frances Whitehead, Washington. Irene Gill

Irene Gill of Patterson (Putnam Lake) died Friday, Dec. 31, at her home. She was 95.  Mrs. Gill was born May 16, 1904, in Belhaven, North Carolina, to the late Dameron B. and Sally Ann (Bishop) White. After graduating high school, she attended the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg, VA. She married John Gill Sr. in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 10, 1938, and then settled in Queens, N.Y., before moving to Putnam Lake in 1948. Her husband John predeceased her in 1961.  Mrs. Gill was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brewster, the Putnam County Retired Teachers Association and the United Methodist Women.  Mrs. Gill taught at Green Chimneys School for 14 1/2 years before retiring in 1969.  She is survived by her son, John Jr., of Putnam Lake.  A service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Brewster.  Friends may call at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Lake, Brewster, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  Interment will be in St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery.  (The News-Times (Danbury, CT) – January 2, 2000)


Joyce Booth Gillins

Mrs. Joyce Booth Gillins, 57, of 90 Elm St., Montclair, N.J., and formerly of Beaufort County, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Mt. Calvary Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Acre Station community, Plymouth, with Elder Earl Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. Gillins was born in Beaufort County on April 26, 1949. She was the daughter of Beatrice Woolard Booth and the late Earmon Linwood Booth. She attended the Beaufort County Schools and graduated from Montclair High School, Montclair, N.J. She was employed with the Montclair Public Schools in Montclair, N.J. She was married to Henry C. Porter Sr., who survives. She had attended Mt. Calvary Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Acre Station, while in North Carolina.  Survivors include one daughter, Angela Gillins of Montclair, N.J.; three sons, Anthony Gillins of California, Hank Porter Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., and John Gillins of Montclair, N.J.; four sisters, Devora Francis and Anna Moore, both of Newark, N.J., Glencia Whitney of Acre Station, and Melinda Linton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Earmon Linwood Booth Sr. and Tommy Booth, both of Newark, N.J., Sammy Booth of Yeatesville, and John Myers Booth of Acre Station; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Diane Credle and one brother, Cleon Booth.  The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 17344 N.C. Allan Adale Glatthorn

WASHINGTON, N.C. - Dr. Allan Adale Glatthorn, 83, died at his home in Washington, on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service.  The family will receive friends following the service at Hillside Funeral Service. Dr. Glatthorn will be remembered for his significant contributions to education, principally in the areas of supervision and curriculum development. Dr. Glatthorn was Professor Emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania from which he retired in 1987, as well as Professor Emeritus of East Carolina University from which he retired in 2003. Dr. Glatthorn was born and raised in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, graduating from Frankford High School and earning three degrees from Temple University. During World War II, he served in the United States Infantry, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, earning the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. Dr. Glatthorn's entire public school career (24 years) was spent in Abington, Pa., where he was an English teacher and supervisor before becoming principal of the Abington High School. He was principal of that school during the 1960's when it won national recognition for its innovative programs and academic excellence. He left the principalship to found and direct two suburban alternative schools, Alternative East and Alternative West. Dr. Glatthorn joined the faculty at the Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania in 1972, becoming the Director of Teacher Education and later the Chairman of the Educational Leadership Department. He held post-doctoral fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Chicago, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Portugal. In 1987, Dr. Glatthorn moved to North Carolina, where he was a Professor of Education, honored with the academic title of Distinguished Research Professor of Education and presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Research. On leave from ECU, Dr. Glatthorn served as the Acting Director of the School of Education, University of Alaska at Fairbanks (1992-1993). He was the author of thirty-six professional books in the fields of school leadership, curriculum and supervision and of forty textbooks in English language arts. He was generally considered one of the nation's foremost authorities in the fields of curriculum and teacher supervision. He consulted in these areas across the country as well as abroad where several of his books were translated into foreign languages. Dr. Glatthorn was a noted speaker and writer whose words provided leadership as well as inspiration. He strongly believed in the transformative power of education. All in all, he dedicated 59 years of his life to education. Among his professional honors and activities, Dr. Glatthorn served on the Curriculum Advisory Council, National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Board of Editors, Review of Education, the Task Force to Reform the High School, the National Council for the Humanities (a presidential appointment by Lyndon Johnson), and the Commission on the Humanities. Dr. Glatthorn was the son of Anna Girvin and Louis Glatthorn; he was one of nine children and is survived by his brother, Louis Glatthorn, and sister, Dorothy Egbert, both of Brattleboro, Vt.; his brothers, Ed, Fred, Bruce and Daniel Glatthorn preceded him in death as did his sisters, Anna Tucker and Lorna Farmer. In 1947, he married Ruth Kirk, who survives. In 1976, he married his wife of 31 years, Barbara Parpart Glatthorn. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, Dale Glatthorn of Aurora; and his daughters, Carolin Dotterer and her husband, William, of Charleston, S.C., Laura Vlasits and her husband, Chaz, of Philadelphia, Louise Mangels and her husband, Gerald, of Glenside, Pa. and Gwen Apple and her husband, Tony, of Washington, NC. Dr. Glatthorn is also survived by five grandchildren, Alexander Marchut and his wife, Sabrina ,of North Brunswick, N.J., Amber Marchut of Washington, D.C., Gregory Mangels of Philadelphia, Kirk Mangels of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Max Dotterer of Charleston, S.C.; and by a step-granddaughter, Brittany Apple of Washington. Dr. Glatthorn was a member of Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. Margaret Mitchell Glenn

DURHAM - Margaret Mitchell Glenn, 88, of 242 Kingwood Rd., Reidsville, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at Anne Penn Hospital, Reidsville.  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, 1998, from the Hall-Wynne Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Laurie Hayes Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.  Born in Washington, NC, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Nono Mitchell. She lived most of her adult life in Durham, where she was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, the Calvary United Methodist Women Group 3, and the Hobby Club.  Surviving are one son, Charles R. Carrie Lucille Ball Godley

Mrs. Carrie Lucille Ball Godley, 86, of 2701 Argonne Ave., Norfolk, Va., died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, at DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk, Va.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, with the Rev. Henry Horne officiating. Ronnie Godley, Jamie McVicker, Ricky McVicker, Larry Smith, Glen Bright and Bobby Bright will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be David Clark, Brian Clark, Abe Clark, Dewey Phelps and Bobby Heninger.  Mrs. Godley was born in Beaufort County on March 17, 1921. She was the daughter of the late William Niles Ball and Carrie Allen Walker Ball. On Feb. 22, 1948, she married Sidney Eugene Godley, who preceded her in death May 8, 1976. She was a retired clerk having worked with W.G. Schwartz and later Miller & Rhodes, both in Norfolk, Va.  Survivors include one sister, Annie Bright of Chocowinity.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Ball and two sisters, Katie Smith and Daisy Roberson.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. at Paul Funeral Home, Washington, and other times at the home of her niece, Carrie Jean Carrow, 2273 West Barr Road, Chocowinity.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Wednesday, September 5, 2007)

Highway 33 West, Chocowinity.  Mrs. Godley was born March 4, 1936, in Pitt County. She was the daughter of the late Norman Hodges, Sr. and Mamie Paramore Hodges. She was married to William Marshall Godley, Jr., who preceded her in death on May 18, 1987. She was retired from National Spinning Company of Washington. Mrs. Godley was a member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, the WNAC Ladies Auxiliary and the N.C. State Law Enforcement Association.  Survivors include two daughters, Pam Godley Westfall and her husband, Edward, and Kathy Godley Clark, all of Chocowinity; one sister, Emily Hodges Taylor of Washington; three brothers, William Bryant Hodges of Washington and Norman Hodges, Jr. and Jimmy Rogers Hodges, both of Chocowinity; one grandson, Andrew Marshall Clark; and one granddaughter, Jeannette Rae Clark.  She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Juanita Hodges, Louise Hodges Godley and Ida Mae Hodges Harding, and six brothers, Earl Junior Hodges, Herman Lee Hodges, James Ervin Hodges, Sr., Eugene Hodges, Rudolph Hodges and Willie Ray Hodges.  Hillside Funeral Service of Washington is serving the Godley family.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Monday, November 13, 2006)


Martha Campbell Godley

Martha Campbell Godley, longtime Washington resident and former Washington Women’s Club President, died of heart failure at Britthaven on July 18, 2007.  Ms. Godley, 85, was a retired high school teacher of math who taught at several area schools and sponsored many Drama Club productions. She is survived by her brothers, Charles Campbell and Cyril Campbell; her sister, Evelyn Bradshaw; her three children Carol Campbell, Robert Godley and Paul Godley and three grandchildren, Amanda-Beth Campbell, Genna Godley and Kira Godley.  Friends, caregivers and former students are invited to a memorial service to honor her memory on Sunday, July 29. Maurice Q. Godley

Dr. Maurice Q. Godley, a retired associate professor of agronomy and a research scientist at Virginia State University, died Tuesday in his home at 3413 Watson St. in Ettrick. He was 70.  Dr. Godley was also a soil conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  Born in Pantego, N.C., he received a B.A. in agriculture from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro and a master's degree in agronomy from the University of Illinois. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University.  Dr. Godley came to the Richmond area in 1948 and began working at Virginia State as a conservationist. He served with the Department of Agriculture from 1963 until 1974, returning to the university as an associate professor of agronomy and research director of science and education administration and teaching.  Dr. Godley was a soil scientist whose professional associations included the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America and the Caste Council of Agriculture.  He was also a member of the Epsilon Phi Botanical Honorary Society, the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture and the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.  Survivors includes his wife, Mrs. Mollie Randolph Godley, a stepdaughter, Barbara R. Hundley, a brother, Dr. Alegro J. Godley; and five sisters, Mrs. Romain G. Swinson, Mrs. Justine G. Adair, Miss Gertrude V. Godley, Mrs. Altice G. Frazier and Mrs. Ernestyne Jeffries.  A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the James M. Wilkerson Funeral Home. William Preston Godley, Sr.

William Preston Godley Sr., age 85, of 957 Smithtown Rd., Grimesland, died Friday June 15, 2007 at his home.  Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday June 19, 2007 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens and will be conducted by Pastor Stanley Jones.  Mr. Godley was born in Beaufort Co. on November 10, 1921 to the late Jesse and Alice Virginia Buck Godley and on October 12, 1946 married Fannie Mae Taylor who preceded him in death on June 6, 1995. He served in the United States Army and was employed as a drink salesman for Roberson’s Beverage and Coca-Cola bottling company for many years.  Survivors include two sons: William Preston Godley Jr. of Grimesland, Ricky Allen Godley of Grimesland, one daughter: Barbara Godley Cole of Chocowinity, one brother: Lindsey Ward Godley of Greenville, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Warren Godley, five brothers and five sisters.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM Monday June 18, 2007 at the Vineyard Community Church on Hwy 33 E. Effie-Raye Calhoun Bateman Goff

Mrs. Effie-Raye Calhoun Bateman Goff of 858 East Main St., Belhaven died Thursday, October 5, 2006 at her home.  Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2006 at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and will be conducted by Rev. Mary Lou McElray and Rev. James M. Waggoner. Burial will follow in the Belhaven Community Cemetery.  Mrs. Goff was born in Pamlico County to the late William M. and Huldah Squires Calhoun. She graduated from Grainger High School in Kinston and Meredith College in Raleigh. On September 11, 1937, she married Washington E. Bateman Jr. who preceded her in death in 1962. She later married Julian P. Goff on November 23, 1978 who survives.  She was a prolific artist, who not only painted, but also taught private art students for over thirty years. For another thirty years she operated “EEii’s little Korners of the World,” an art sales gallery, where she promoted and encouraged artists. She was particularly supportive of Meredith College art faculty and alumnae. In 1977 she was awarded Meredith College’s “Distinguished Alumnae Award.” After her first husband’s death, she took over the management of Bateman Oil Company for about six years, until her son returned home from college. She worked with other local citizens to organize the Belhaven Memorial Museum, and became the organization’s first president. She was also active in many other community endeavors, including serving a term as president of the Belhaven Community Chamber of Commerce. In 1965 she was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as Belhaven’s “Distinguished Citizen of the Year.” Mrs. Goff was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Special recognition should be given to Caregivers: Ashley Morgan, Donnie Gooch and Leida Cooper as well as the staff of Community Home Care & Hospice.  She is also survived by one son, W.E. (Topper) Bateman, III and wife, Dorinda; one daughter, Raye Neal Bateman Carraway, and husband, Rex; all of Belhaven; four grandchildren, Terri Bateman Goff and husband, David, of Winston-Salem, Robin Calfee Tananis and husband, Leonard, of Rocky Mount, James F. Calfee, III and wife, Heather of High Point, Joseph Tyler Carraway of Greenville; two great grandchildren, Alexander Goff and Katie Goff, both of Winston-Salem and one brother-in-law, Milton Goff and wife, Inez of Rocky Mount.  Mrs. Goff was also preceded in death by a grandson, Craig Bateman; three sisters, Mildred C. Taylor, Fannie C. Heath, Vergelene C. John Woodrow Goff

John Woodrow Goff, was born in Washington, North Carolina, on February 6, 1941, to Woodrow W. Goff and Dessie Miller Goff. He departed this life at age 62 years on February 24, 2003, at Woodlake Nursing Home in Clute, Texas, after a long devastating battle with Parkinson's Disease.  John was preceded in death by his father.  Survivors include his mother, Dessie Goff, of Clute, daughter, Denise Brigance of Houston, daughter, Cheryl Jackson; grandchildren, Stephanie, Wayne, and Jean Jackson; his aunt, Violet Fisher of Sparks, Nevada, and several cousins.  After a stint in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, John graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He retired from Dow Chemical Company due to his illness. John's outside interests included firearms, motorcycling, astronomy, and computers.  John was a member of Christ's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but attended Family Life Church in Lake Jackson. He was a member of the Lake Jackson Masonic Lodge, the Harley Owners Group, National Rifle Association and the Greenwood Gun Club.  Private services were held at the Stroud Funeral Home in Clute, Texas. Doris B. Gold

Doris B. Gold, 83, of Tampa, passed away December 27, 2001 at the Carrollwood Care Center under the care of LifePath Hospice Gold Team. She was born in Washington, N.C. and moved to Tampa from Key West, Fla. in 1960. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Jack F. Gold, and is survived by her daughter, Joyce Murphy and her husband, Jim; grandchildren, Jay, Jackie and Jeffrey Murphy, Tim Faber, Jamie Frederick; great-granddaughter, Grace Faber; great-grandson, Maddux Faber, who was the light of her life; two brothers-in-law, Fred Gold and his wife, Millie and Peter D. Gold and his wife, Frances; and special friends, Cecil and Barbara Edge and Darius and Pat Lundy. She was Protestant by faith; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mystic Chapter No. 110 for over 50 years; and Fleet Reserve Association Branch 188. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2001 at the Mark III Funeral Home, 7701 W. Hillsborough Avenue. Mary Louise Goode, 83, of the 800 block of Norview Ave., died Aug. 2, 1992, in a nursing home.  Mrs. Goode was born in Washington, N.C. She was the widow of John F. Goode. She was a member of McKendrie United Methodist Church and Lydia Wesleyan Circle.  Survivors include two daughters, Paulina McNew and Mary Forbes, both of Norfolk; a son, Peter B. John Dillon Gorham, Sr.

Mr. John Dillon Gorham, Sr., 79, of 282 Old Mill Road, Chocowinity, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church, Washington, with Bishop James L. Woolard officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.  Mr. Gorham was born in Beaufort County on Feb. 7, 1927. He was the son of the late Edward and Lossie Graddy Gorham. He attended the former P.S. Jones High School, Washington. Later in life, he received his GED. He was an Army veteran. He was employed with Dupont Company, Kinston. On Dec. 25, 1967, he married Dorothy Grice Gorham, who survives. He was a member of The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church, Washington.  Survivors include two sons, John Gorham Jr. of the home and Harry Gorham of Pemberton, N.J.; one sister, Edna Bethea of Magnolia; one brother, Rudolph Gorham of Washington; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse Louis Gorham and Edward Gorham and one sister, Ethel Gorham.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. William Gray Gorham, Sr.

Mr. William Gray Gorham, Sr. was born Feb. 6, 1934, in Washington, N.C., to Edward and Dora Guilford Gorham. He passed away Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a faithful member of the Vocal Choir, Prayer Band Choir and a former member of the Deacon Board. He also lived in Durham and Charlotte, and in 1994 came to live in Winston-Salem until his passing. He went to Mecklenburg College in Charlotte. He also attended P.H. Jones High School and attended Bull City as a barber in Durham. He served in the military for eight years, and he retired from an overnight trucking company. He was a van driver for Independence Village and worked for Transit Authority and Guardsmart Security. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Gorham. He leaves to mourn him his loving, caring and devoted wife, Saundra Glover Gorham; and his children, Cary (Barbra) Cecil Glover of Winston-Salem, William Gorham Jr. (Lisa) of Chapel Hill, and Mary Ellen Sherrill (Edward) of Lithonia, Ga. He was father to Darryle Hayes (Felice) of Durham, Shonnetra Brunson (William) of Charlotte and Brenda Murray (Ronald) of Charlotte. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Domitic and Dimitri Glover, Ernest Sherrill, William Brunson Jr. and Isaiah Brunson and Taylor and Victoria Hayes; a brother, James Gorham (JoLinda) of Washington, N.C.; a sister, Lottie Gass (Beverly) of Charlotte; an aunt, Edna Bethea of Magnolia; four uncles, Rudolph Gorham (Edna) and John Gorham of Washington, N.C., Earl Thomas (Ruth) of Chocowinity, and Abraham Guilford, of Norfolk, Va.; two devoted cousins, Ada Cleveland of Charlotte and Linda Gorham of Washington, N.C.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and three special friends, Malcolm Little of Charlotte, Deacon James Lassitter and Deacon Robert Jackson. Willie Robert Gorham

Willie Robert Gorham, 74, formerly of 201 Woodbury Rd., Newtonville, died Friday in the New Jersey Memorial Home in Vineland, where he was a patient for one year. He was in failing health for six weeks.  Mr. Gorham was a retired construction worker.  He was a member of the Bethel Holy Temple where he served as a deacon.  Born in Washington, N.C., he lived at the Woodbury Road address since moving to Newtonville 30 years ago.  Surviving are a son, Robert, of New York City; a daughter, Dorothy Smith, of Newtonville; two brothers, Joseph and Charles, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Anna Marie, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  Services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Bethel Holy Temple, Eighth Street, Newtonville.  Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery in Newtonville.  Friends may call Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. prior to services in the church.  Arrangements are by the Carll-Peterson-Ilacqua Funeral Home, 208 E. Oretha Brinn Gornto

Oretha Brinn Gornto, 86, of the 4700 block of Poolside Road, went to be with the Lord May 4, 1997, in Sentara Bayside Hospital.  Mrs. Gornto was born in Bath, N.C., and was the widow of Albert Brooks Gornto. She attended Calvary Baptist Church and was retired as a switchboard operator for Lake Taylor Hospital, City of Norfolk.  Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Gornto Foster and her husband, William I. Foster Jr., of Virginia Beach, and Nancy Gornto Dailey of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Albert Brooks Gornto Jr.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel, by the Rev. Ernest Roebuck. John William Gountikas

Mr. John William Gountikas, age 84, a resident of 224 Hudnell Street, Washington, NC died Friday night September 21, 2007 at Britthaven.  A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday September 24, 2007 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Larry Harding. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Mr. Gountikas was born in Beaufort County on January 29, 1923, son of the late Anthony D. Gountikas and Dorothy Gray Tetterton Gurkin.  On July 2, 1949, he married the former Beulah Tetterton who preceded him in death on May 20, 2004.  Mr. Gountikas served his country in the US Navy during World War II in Korea. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart as a result of injuries he received. Mr. Gountikas was a member of the Kingdom Hall and attended Asbury United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and a member of the D.A.V. David B. Gower

David B. Gower, 75, died Sept. 7, 2001, in a local hospital. Born in Aurora, N.C., David, as a young man, worked as an auto mechanic. He served in Germany during World War II, and worked at the Ford Motor Co. as an inspector retiring after 43 years. He enjoyed mornings at the Open House Diner on Colley Ave. where he conversed with friends.  He is survived by a daughter, Emily Putnam and husband Lynwood of Grandy, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Suzanne Jacobs Curtis of Knightsdale, N.C.; two sisters, Bernice Carawan and Shirley Ambrose, both of Chesapeake; eight nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and -nephews. Bonnie Mae Graddy

Bonnie Mae Graddy, 89, slipped quietly and peacefully into eternal rest July 13, 2001 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home.  She was a native of Chocowinity, N.C., and resided in Washington, N.C., for many years. She was a longtime, faithful member of the former Loving Union Freewill Baptist Church, which is now known as the Whootentown Community Church of Deliverance, where she always enjoyed many wonderful spiritual hymns. A favorite selection was ''Come By Here Lord, Come By Here.''  Mrs. Graddy had a lengthy career as a domestic housekeeper. The well-being of her family was most important to her, and she will be sorely missed by her two daughters, Elizabeth Abbott of Norfolk, and Curley Wooden of Washington, N.C.; two sons, David Graddy of Norfolk and Louis Graddy of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Leonard Williams of Oak City, N.C., and Sam Williams of New York; a sister, Annabelle Cooper of New York; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Whootentown Community Church of Deliverance in Washington, N.C., with the Rev. Janie Williams Graham

She was retired from Hamilton Beach Co., Washington. She was a lifelong member of Beebe Chapel C.M.E. Church, Washington, where she served as an usher.  Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Blount of Washington; two sons, Ralph Graham Jr. of the home and James Williams of Washington; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Earl Graham.  The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Samuel Blount, 501 Cedar Drive, Washington.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Robert L. Graves

Robert L. Graves of the 1900 block of Montclair Ave., passed away quietly Sunday morning, March 29, 1998.  He was born in Belhaven, N.C., to the late Thomas E. Graves Sr. and Johnnie Ann Graves. However, much of his life was spent in Roper, N.C.  A graduate of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and the graduate division of Columbia University in New York City, he taught history and coached tennis for many years at Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. Strong Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Raleigh Graves of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; five great-nephews, Thomas Graves IV, and Jason Graves, both of Norfolk, Edward Featherson and Clarence Featherson, both of Washington, D.C., and Michael Graves of Las Vegas; and a great-niece, Pamela Graves of Germany.  A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. I. Joseph Williams. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. the day of the service. The family will receive friends at the residence. Jesse J. Gray, Sr.

Mr. Jesse J. Gray Sr. of 1001 Washington St. died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at the home.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Davenport Temple Church of God in Christ with Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Gray was born in Pitt County on Sept. 9, 1925. He was the son of the late Willie Gray and Dora Jones-Godley. He attended Beaufort County Schools. He was married to Dorothy Woolard Gray, who survives. He was a member of Davenport Temple Church of God in Christ and served there as a deacon and a trustee.  Survivors include three daughters, Belinda Smallwood, Edith G. Robinson and Michelle Holland, all of Washington; three sisters, Martha L. Godley and Sarah Midgette, both of Washington, and Bernice Downing of New York; five brothers, Willie Jones, Willie Gray and Bobby Gray, all of Washington, Garfield Gray of Pennsylvania and Tom Gray of New York; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one son, Reginald Gray; three sisters, Ethel Mae Whitley, Pauline Langley and Mary Hopkins; and three brothers, Chester Crandell, Albert Gray and Charles Gray.  The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Leon Randolph Funeral Home memorial chapel and other times at the home.  Arrangements are by Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. Mr. Lloyd Nathan Gray, 74, of 3376 River Road, died Thursday, September 13, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital.  A graveside funeral service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 16,  with Dr. Jimmy Moore officiating.  Mickey Younker, Donnie Younker, Lea Younker, Lloyd Phillip Gray, II, Travis Dunn, and Tobby Wainwright will be pallbearers.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until the funeral hour at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at the home.  Mr. Gray was born July 7, 1933 in Beaufort County.  He was the son of the late Roy Lee Gray and Alice Godley Gray.  On August 13, 1957, he married Margaret (Peggy) Brooks, who survives.  Mr. Gray was a graduate of Chocowinity High School.  He was a retired auto parts salesman.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington.  Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Gray; a daughter, Donna Kay Younker of Vestal, New York; and two sons, Steve L. Smith of Hamlet, N. C. and Lloyd Phillip Gray of Bridgeton, N. C.; three sisters, Lucille McNeill of Crownsville, Md., Polly Woolard of Washington, N. C., and Jane Burn of Spruce Pines, N. Ms. Mary Esther Gray, formerly of Belhaven, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, in Vallejo, Calif.  A funeral was conducted Nov. 1, 2007, at Cooley-Riolo Mortuary. Burial followed in Skylark Cemetery, Vallejo, Calif.  Ms. Gray was born in Belhaven on June 18, 1969. She was the daughter of Albert Blount and the late Cleopatra Blount. She was adopted and reared by Naomi Ruth Sutton.  Survivors include her adoptive mother, Naomi Sutton; one daughter, Bridgette and four sons, Dakota, Ezekiel, Bryant and Jamal.  She was preceded in death by one son, Donte’; one brother, Marvin Eric Collins; and four sisters, Shirley L. She was the daughter of the late Walter Alonza Jones and Mable Cahoon Jones. On July 10, 1947, she married Henry Earvin Gray, who preceded her in death June 27, 1993. She was a homemaker. Arthur Green of the 700 block of W. 31st St. died Feb. 6, 2000, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.  Born in Belhaven, N.C., he was employed as a general serviceman with Ryder Truck Service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Green was a member of St. Paul Disciple Church.  Survivors include his wife, Susie Green; a daughter, Arvett Blount of Norfolk; four sons, Shedrick Green, Ronnie Smith, Glenvert Green and Robert Jones, all of Norfolk; three sisters, Emma Green of Washington, N.C., Lillie Mae Williams of Chesapeake and Verna Lee Green of Belhaven, N.C.; two grandchildren; a devoted brother-in-law, George W. Williams of Chesapeake; a devoted son-in-law, Steve Blount of Norfolk; and a host of other relatives and friends.  A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrews Temple COGIC by Bishop Loretta Jones. Irene Bowen Green

Irene Bowen Green, 92, formerly of Myrtle Ave., died May 16, 1994.  She was born in Washington, N.C., and had previously worked for Virginia Cleaners as a secretary. She had more recently retired from Southwestern Life Insurance Co. She was married to the late Henry D. Green and had been a charter member of Avalon Church of Christ in Virginia Beach, and was also a member of the Eastern Star.  She is survived by one sister-in-law, Lucy Bowen Byrd of Warrenton, Va.; and one niece, Ruth Irene Rider also of Warrenton, Va.  The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Avalon Church of Christ by the Rev. She was the daughter of the late Henry Rouse and Martha Rouse. She was married to Joseph Baker “Seegoo” Griffin, who preceded her in death.  Survivors include three daughters, Greta Paige of Washington, Mary T. Williams of Chocowinity and Marian Henman of Richmond, Va.; six sons, Donnie Griffin of Stone Mountain, Ga., Joseph Griffin and Michael Griffin, both of Washington, Larry Griffin of Atlanta, Ga., Kenneth Griffin of Richmond, Va., and John M. Mr. Elmer Alton Griffin, age 90, a former resident of 133 Griffin Lane, Washington died Friday January 5, 2007 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home.  A funeral will be held 2:00 PM Sunday January 7, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Rev. Todd Griffin, Scott Griffin, Brad Griffin, Randy Moore, Walter Clark and Kevin Griffin will serve as pallbearers.  Mr. Griffin was born in Pitt County on August 11, 1916 son of the late Louis Henry Griffin and the late Addie Louvenia Griffin. He married the former Emma Lee Brown on November 17, 1941 who preceded him in death on September 6, 2003. Mr. Griffin was a farmer who upon his retirement worked with P & G Manufacturing, Inc. as long as his health permitted. He was a charter member of Wharton Trinity United Methodist Church and a past member of Wharton Station Ruritan Club.  Survivors include a daughter: Rebecca “Becky” Moore of Washington; two sons: Alton Lee Griffin and Elmer Ray Griffin both of Washington; two sisters: Idonia Andrews and Addie Rutledge both of Washington; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ivan Bruce Griffin

Mr. Ivan Bruce Griffin, 80, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday May 6, 2007 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven, NC. Prior to his hospitalization, he was residing in the comfort of his daughter Michelle Morris’ home, at 1540 C Canal Road in Pantego, NC. He was born November 18, 1926 in Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC to Henry Daniel and Nina Lee Jones Griffin, who preceded him in death.  He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1944 and joined the Navy to serve in WWII. After leaving the Navy with an honorable discharge, he was employed with VEPCO and then transferred to Virginia Natural Gas, where he retired after 30 years of service as a service technician. Bruce was a member of the Newport News Moose Lodge since 1965 and was also a member of the American Legion Post 25 of Newport News, VA. He loved hunting, fishing, and cooking and his grandchildren. He was a great cook and had helped to cook numerous meals at the Moose Lodge, American Legion and Virginia Natural Gas. No one could make BBQ or brunswick stew like Bruce. He loved his friends, family, and always had a funny joke to tell.  Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his long-time companion of 21 years, Pauline Hall, his brothers: J.T., Henry Lee, Russell, and W.F. Griffin and also his sisters: Mamie G. Reid and Hattie Grace Edwards.  Bruce leaves to cherish his memory his children, Michelle (Shelly) Morris and her children: Meghan, Logan and Gracie Morris. Also his son and daughter, Donna Wilkins and Michael Griffin, numerous nieces and nephews, many friends and his caring and beloved sister, Elizabeth Reges of Red Oak, NC.  A memorial service will be held on Wednesday May 9, 2007 at Union Grove Church of Christ in Pungo at 7:00 PM. Lucille Dunbar Griffin

ELIZABETH CITY - Lucille Dunbar “Grandma Lucy” Griffin, 94, passed away February 18, 2007 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC.  Mrs. Griffin was born in Royal, NC, on November 10, 1912, the youngest of eight children (six of whom lived), she was the daughter of the late Hertford and Julie Dunbar and the widow of the late John Griffin, all of Scranton, NC.  She lived in Scranton, NC, until 1972, when she moved to Elizabeth City. She had three great loves in life; her family, her church, and her college. She was baptized at the age of 12 and was active in the Scranton Christian Church during her years there. After moving to Elizabeth City, she was active at the Elizabeth City Church of Christ until the founding of Towne South Church of Christ, where she maintained membership until the time of her death. She also enjoyed attending South Mills Church of Christ on Sunday evenings.  From the time she first served as a camp mother at Camp Roanoke on the campus of Roanoke Bible College in 1954, she had a love affair with Roanoke Bible College. Upon moving to Elizabeth City, she served as assistant bookstore manager. Upon retirement, she began volunteering in the cafeteria, a job she continued until her entering the hospital in late January. She considered all the students her grandchildren — hence, “Grandma Lucy.”  Surviving is her son, William A. “Bill” Griffin and his wife Trish, of Elizabeth City; her grandchildren, Mark Griffin and his wife Susan, of Palm City, FL., Carol Flowers and her husband Danny of Elizabeth City, her great-grandchildren, Colton Griffin of Palm City, FL., Kristen and Cassidy Flowers, of Elizabeth City; and special nieces and nephews, as well as her wider family of RBC alumni. She was predeceased by one great-grandson, Jake Griffin, as well as all her siblings: Lillian Dunbar Hollowell, Margaret Dunbar Bing, Allene Dunbar Credle, Kenneth Dunbar, and Keith Dunbar.  A funeral service will be held Wednesday February 21, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Blanton Center at Roanoke Bible College with Ronnie Woolard officiating. A funeral service will also be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the West Belhaven Church of Christ in Belhaven, NC. Nancy Perry Griffin

Mrs. Nancy Perry Griffin, age 61, a resident of 5825 US Hwy 264, West, Washington, NC died Tuesday June 19, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital.  A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday June 22, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Rev. Karen Crutchfield.  Nancy was born in Beaufort County on August 2, 1945 daughter of the late Hubert Alfred Perry, Sr. and the late Ruby Irene Perry. She attended Old Ford School and Washington High School. Mrs. Nancy married Joseph Lane Griffin on October 12, 1979 who survives. She was co-owner, along with her husband, of Griffin Automotive. Mrs. Nancy attended and was very active in many activities at Wharton Trinity United Methodist Church.  Survivors include Mrs. Nancy’s husband of 27 years: Joseph “Joey” Griffin of the home; two daughters: Sherry Gravely and her husband Harley of Washington and Lisa H. Alligood of Washington; a grandson: Cody Gray Alligood, who was Mrs. Nancy’s light of her life; four sisters: Jean Potts, Patsy Barrow, Carolyn Perry and Peggy Blancett and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Nancy was preceded in death, along with her parents, by two sisters: Margaret Mutherspaw, Wanda Riggleman and three brothers: John A. William Brantley Griffin

William Brantley Griffin of the 400 block of Piping Rock Road passed away Oct. 16, 2000, in a local hospital.  Born in Pantego, N.C., he retired as a foreman from Hampton Roads Sanitation and was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.  Survivors include his wife, Gloria Griffin; four daughters, Janice Cook, Jacqueline Griffin and Alice Griffin, all of Norfolk, and Deneen Griffin-Whirley of Virginia Beach; a son, Reggie Griffin of Norfolk; his father, Leroy Griffin; a sister, Lossie Griffin Davis of Pantego, N.C.; four brothers, Theodore Griffin of Columbus, Ga., the Rev. George R. Griffin of Portsmouth, Melvin Griffin and Horace Griffin of Pantego; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of sisters-in-law, nieces, other relatives and friends.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church by the Rev. George Griffin. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery. Edna Latham Grimes

Mrs. Edna Latham Grimes, age 79, a resident of 113 Bruton Circle, River Hills, Greenville and former resident of East 9th Street, Washington, died Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Britthaven of Washington.  Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2006 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Pastor Ken Cash. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. The following will serve as pallbearers: Brian Pollard, Kevin Pollard, Benjamin Litsinberger, Corey Jackson, Royal Mitchell and Robert Morris.  Mrs. Grimes was born in Beaufort County on April 4, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Dempsey Blake Latham and Louise Keech Latham. Mrs. Grimes graduated from Oak City High School and the Beaufort County Business School. She was a bookkeeper for Everett Truck Lines and Elks Trucking Company. Mrs. Grimes was a member of the Historical Society of Beaufort County.  On July 19, 1947, Mrs. Grimes married Raby Jones Grimes, who preceded her in death, January 15, 2006.  Survivors include one son, John Earl Grimes of Washington; four daughters, Raby Carol Grimes, Nancy Grimes Smith and her husband, James, and Lisa Grimes Moore all of Greenville; Donna Grimes Pollard and her husband, Eric of Charlotte; two brothers, D.B. Latham and his wife, Molly of Tarboro, John C. William Earl Grimes of the 1000 block of Owl's Creek Lane died May 6, 1999.  Born in Aurora, N.C., he was retired from Sea Fair International Union and also worked for Princess Anne Recreation Center.  He is survived by his wife, Ruth W. Grimes of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Ruth Motley of Virginia Beach; a son, David Allen of Virginia Beach; three adopted sons, Sgt. Yaphet Grimes of Twentynine Palms, Calif., Hamadi Grimes and Philip Grimes, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Ina Bryant of Aurora, N.C.; two brothers, Dick Grimes of New York and Carlton Grimes of Norfolk; an aunt, Louise Collins of Philadelphia; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rehoboth Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Elizabeth Wainwright Grissom

Mrs. Elizabeth Wainwright Grissom, age 65, a resident of 1610 Dan Taylor Road, Washington, NC died Wednesday evening, July 4, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital.  A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday July 7, 2007 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Eddie Bowen. Mrs. Grissom was born in Beaufort County on March 17, 1942, daughter of Fannie Mae Tetterton Wainwright and the late Floyd Earl Wainwright. On August 20, 1959, she married Herman Winstead Grissom, Sr. who preceded her in death on November 5, 2006. She was a homemaker and a member of Wares Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a former volunteer at Ridgewood and a former member of the Beaufort County Grange.  She is survived by her children: Terry G. Boyd and her husband, Jerry; Effie G. Beddard and her husband, Ray and Herman W. Grissom, Jr. and his wife, Kim all of Washington; her grandchildren: Christopher Lewis, Heather Lewis, Ashley Grissom, Natalie Grissom, and Morgan Boyd; her step grandchildren: Emily Beddard and Mallory Beddard; her great grandchild: Chris Allen, Jr.; her brothers: Jesse James “Buddy” Wainwright, Billy Jack Wainwright, Floyd Henry Wainwright and Glenn Edward Wainwright; her sisters: Fannie Earl Toler and Linda Faye Alligood and her mother: Fannie Mae Tetterton Wainwright. He was a retired farmer and a member of Wares Chapel United Methodist Church.  On August 20, 1959, Mr. Grissom married the former Elizabeth Wainwright, who survives.  Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Terry B. Boyd and her husband, Jerry, Effie G. Mrs. Grist was a realtor, worked for the Heart Association and operated antique shops. She was an avid bridge player. Mrs. Grist was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.  Mrs. Grist was married to Shepherd Russell “Shep” Grist, who preceded her in death, November 25, 2006.  Survivors include three daughters, Vicky G. Shepherd Russell Grist

Mr. Shepherd Russell Grist, age 77, a former resident of 2123 North Market Street, Washington, NC died Saturday November 25, 2006 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Washington.  A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday November 29, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church of Washington officiated by Rev. Dr. William L. Hufham. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mr. Grist’s nephews: Alden P. Grimes, Samuel G. Grimes, Samuel L. Grist, James G. Leach, Churchill B. Grimes and Junius D. Grimes will serve as pallbearers.  Mr. Grist was born in Beaufort County on October 9, 1929 son of the late Samuel Latham Grist Sr. and the late Olivia Russell Grist. He was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School and attended UNC Chapel Hill until his U.S. Army National Guard unit was deployed to Germany during the Korean War. Mr. Grist married the former Carolyn L. Adams on May 31, 1951 who survives. Following his military service Mr. Grist earned his BS degree at the former East Carolina Teachers College. He was a junior high school teacher at Chocowinity and later at Washington before earning his Master’s degree from University of Michigan. Mr. Grist then served as the guidance counselor with Washington High School from 1960 to 1968. He then became the principal of P.S. Jones Junior High School from 1968 until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement Mr. Grist continued working in the education field as the Beaufort County Assistant Superintendent until his second retirement in 1994. Mr. Grist was a member of the Down East Senior Club and a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder.  Surviving along with his wife are three daughters: Vicky G. Barris and her husband Robert of Buxton, NC, Lucy G. Walker and her husband Larry of Washington and Jami G. Burns and her husband Gary of Chapel Hill; five grandchildren: Adam Grist Cash Barris, Shelley Walker Selby and her husband Daniel, Mary Carolyn Walker, Catherine Shepherd Burns and Stephen Grist Burns and one great granddaughter: Sidney Ray Selby. Joseph Douglas Grizzard

WASHINGTON, N.C. - Joseph Douglas "Joe" Grizzard, 63, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007, after a lengthy battle with cancer. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Washington Assembly of God Church, 2029 W. 5th St., Hwy 264 W. Washington, by the Rev. Kenneth Pritchard. Chris Smith, Kevin Mills, Blair Neal, David Cooper, Billy Grizzard Jr. and A.J. Baker will serve as pallbearers. William "Tootie" White will serve as honorary pallbearer. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville. Mr. Grizzard, a native of Greene County, spent his youth in Pitt County in the Pactolus community. He resided in the Black Jack community until 1977, when he moved to Washington, where he owned and operated AAA Glass Service, Inc, until his retirement in 2002. He served in the United States Army from 1966-1968, in Vietnam from 1967-1968. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Combat Infantryman Badge (first award), Bronze Star Medal, First Class Gunner (M-60), First Class Marksman (M-16), First Class Sharpshooter (M-140). He attended the Washington Assembly of God, was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Vietnam Veterans of America, and the 196th Light Infantry Brigade Assoc. He was an active member of both the National and Coastal Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur Alonzo and Camilla Clayborne Grizzard; and a brother, Bobby Grizzard. Surviving are his wife, Margrie Mills Grizzard; a son, M. Douglas Grizzard and partner, Floyd R. Sutton Jr., of Chocowinity; four sisters, Shirley G. Culverhouse of Geneva, Ala., Francis Glisson and husband, David, of Grimesland, Ethel G. Grove, Huntington; a daughter, Mary Virginia Clark, DeLand; three grandchildren, Josephine Kendall, Huntington, Steven A. Earl Guilford

Mr. Earl Guilford, 79, of 29 Jasmine Drive, Chocowinity, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007.  A funeral was conducted April 30, 2007, in Back Swamp Disciple Church with pastor Derrick L. Wilkins officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington.  Mr. Guilford was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 22, 1928. He was the son of the late Laura and Amos Guilford. He was married to the former Mary L. Tucker, who preceded him in death. On June 12, 1997, he married the former Ruth Coleman, who survives. He had been employed with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Back Swamp Disciple Church.  Survivors include 10 children, Madelyne Daniels, Elaine Gerty, Bonnie Jordan and Ronnie Guilford, all of Daytona Beach, Fla., Joann Guilford of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gloria Morrison of Havelock, Linda Daniels and William Guilford, both of Washington, and Thomas E. Guilford and George Amos Guilford; three stepchildren, Caroline Coleman and Willie Coleman, both of Greenville, and Johnny Coleman of Texas; one grandchild raised as a son, Harry Simpson III; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one son, Earl T. Mrs. Doris Winifred Wynne Gurganus, 88, died Thursday, July 12, 2007, at Britthaven of Washington.  Mrs. Gurganus was born May 26, 1919, in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Octavis Battle Wynne and Clara Cutler Wynne. She married Joseph Vernon Gurganus who preceded her in death. Survivors include son Joseph Vernon Gurganus, Jr. and daughter-in-law Harriet Joan Gurganus, and son Frederic Wynne Gurganus. She is also survived by grandchildren Martin Douglas Gurganus, Sr. and wife Carla Michele Gurganus, and Jeffrey Neil Gurganus and wife Julia Smith Gurganus; great-grandchildren Martin Douglas Gurganus, Jr., Daniel Paul Gurganus, Michael Joseph Gurganus, Natalie Erin Gurganus, and Megan Wynne Gurganus; nieces and nephews Mary Wynne Vaughan, Octavia Bost, and Francis Wynne. Ms. Mable Marie Gurganus, age 80, a resident of 208 Village Circle, Washington died Monday December 25, 2006 at Britthaven of Washington.  A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday December 27, 2006 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Marty Alligood.  Ms. Gurganus was born in Pitt County on April 21, 1926, daughter of the late Dave and Carrie Dixon Gurganus. She retired on May 31, 1988 from Beaufort County Nursing Home where she was employed for 15 years as a nursing assistant. Ms. Gurganus was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.  She is survived by her brothers: David J. Gurganus of Greenville, NC, Willard Gurganus of Aurora, NC; Russell Gurganus and Ray Gurganus both of Washington, NC; her sisters: Carrie G. Hudnell of Virginia Beach, VA and Margaret G. Woolard of Washington, NC and a number of nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Lloyd Sylvester Tetterton and Lucy Elizabeth Watson Tetterton. Mrs. Gurganus was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of Beaufort County. She was a member of the Bath Christian Church and the C.W.F. Circle #2. Mrs. Gurganus loved camping and dancing. She was “a very loving and family oriented woman.” She was known as “Nanny” to many in the community.  On December 12, 1940, she married Robert Mitchell Gurganus, who preceded her in death.  Mrs. Gurganus is survived by two daughters, Peggy Joyce Gurganus Bunn and her husband, Billy Chris Bunn, Mary Lynn Gurganus Edwards and her husband, Charles “Skipper” Edwards, all of Bath; a brother, J.T. Tetterton of Belhaven, NC; two sisters, Mamie Nobles of Pantego, NC, Ruby Slade of Bath, NC; four grandsons; Billy Bunn Jr., Chip Edwards, Charles Clark, and Greg Rayburn; five granddaughters, Yvonne Bunn Wold, Tina Clark, Anita Rayburn, Jennifer Bunn and Mandy Edwards; six great grandsons, Terence Wallace, Kristopher Wold, Derek Wold, Curby Clark, Gavin Rayburn, Connor Edwards; and two great granddaughters, Savannah Bunn and Alexia Clark.  Mrs. Gurganus was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius Tetterton and Lloyd N. Matilda Josephine Radcliffe Gurganus

Mrs. Matilda Josephine “Tillie” Radcliffe Gurganus, age 72, a resident of Free Union Church Road, Pinetown, NC peacefully slipped from this world to be with her Lord Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at her home with family by her side.  A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday September 8, 2006 at Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Woodrow Freeze, III. Burial will follow in the Radcliffe Family Cemetery.  Mrs. Tillie was born in Beaufort County on June 24, 1934 daughter of the late David Gray Radcliffe and the late Mildred Josephine Windley Radcliffe. She was a 1952 graduate of the former Pantego High School. Mrs. Tillie married James Robert “Jim” Gurganus on July 11, 1952 who preceded her in death on January 9, 2005. She was an accounting comptroller with Colorcraft in Norfolk at the time of her retirement in January of 1985. Mrs. Tillie was a member of Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, a member of Free Union’s ladies auxiliary, the Adult Sunday School Class and was a church pianist. Mrs. Tillie was a member of the Mt. CHOCOWINITY - James Herbert "Foggy" Gurkin, 63, of 1600 Cotton Patch Road, retired distribution manager, PCS Phosphate, died Monday, January 29, 2001 at home. He was born July 25, 1937 in Martin County to Raymond and Louise Manning Gurkin. He was a member of Maple Grove Christian Church, veteran of the US Army, graduate of Williamston High School and NC State University, member of the Board of Directors Coastal Conservation Association, a member of several surf fish clubs. He married Jean Cratch Gurkin on June 11, 1999 who survives.  Survivors in addition to his wife, step-daughter, Olivia Mills of Wilmington; mother, Louise Manning Gurkin of Williamston; sister, Crissie Gurkin Hardison and husband Willie of Williamston; niece, Holly Hardison Revels and husband Brad; great-niece, Lily Gray Revels; great-nephew, James William Revels; close friend, Bob Parker of Chocowinity.  Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Maple Grove Christian Church with Richard Smartnick and Tony Varner officiating. Burial, Tice Cemetery.  Arrangements by Biggs Funeral Home, Williamston.  (The News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) – February 1, 2001)
