Margaret Hodges Hackney
WASHINGTON, NC - Margaret Hodges Hackney, age 84, of Washington, NC, died in Pitt County Memorial Hospital on Saturday, October 30, 2004, after a brief illness. Mrs. Hackney was born In Washington, NC, on Nov. 27, 1919 to Ralph Hinton and Maude Swindell Hodges. She attended Washington public schools and the Women's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro). Upon completion of college, she was employed by Jefferson-Pilot Insurance Co. On Nov. 20, 1937, she married James Acra Hackney Jr., who preceded her in death in 2001. She spent her married life as a homemaker and mother. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret E. "Marty" Hackney; and four sons, James A. Hackney, III and his wife, Connie, R. Hodges Hackney and his wife, Marsha, Keith D. Hackney and his wife, Claudia, and Robert S. Hackney and his wife, Rachel all of the Washington, NC area. She is also survived by a brother, Ralph H. Hodges, Jr. of Washington, NC; nine grandchildren, Ken Hackney of Havelock, NC, Jane Kemsley and husband Dave of Tucson, AZ., Beth Tulloss and husband Scott of Wilson, NC, Susanne Sanders and husband Nick of London England, Acra Samuels and husband Chris of Nashville, TN, Karen Hackney of Wilmington, NC, Katie Jarvis and husband Mike of Washington, NC, Robert Hackney, Jr. of Asheville, NC and Stewart Hackney of High Point, NC; and nine great-grandchildren. Margaret Hackney long has been active in a multitude of church and civic affairs. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Washington, NC, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Vera Parsons Circle, and where she served on the Permanent Endowment Committee. She also served in the past on the Administrative Board and numerous church committees. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Beaufort County Community College Endowment Fund, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Turnage Theaters Foundation, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Beaufort County Nursing Home. She was an active member of the East Carolina University Friends of the Library and a member of the Beaufort County Committee of 100. She was also an active member and past president of both the Washington Cotillion Club and the Tea and Topics Book Club. She served as a Cub Scout leader with the Boy Scouts and inspired all four sons and all three grandsons to become Eagle Scouts. She was a Community Concerts sponsor, a painting-purchase sponsor for the Beaufort County Arts Council, a scholarship sponsor at Beaufort County Community College, and a founding director of the North Carolina Estuarium. She was a founder and long-time participant in the Beaufort County Friendship Force. Through the years, she also participated in other activities too numerous to mention. Margaret Hackney's greatest interest was comforting those around her who were in need. Several months ago, she requested that this testimonial be included in her obituary: "No one could have been more blessed than I. I have lived a joyful and fulfilled life; I have a wonderful family and many dear friends. I thank the Lord for his blessings and depart this life with joy and with no regrets." A funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Washington on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Raymond K. Wittman and the Rev. William John Bradbury officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Valerie Barnett Hackney
ARAPAHOE - Valerie Barnett Hackney, 49, of 7551 Kershaw Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at Craven Regional Medical Center. She was born in Beaufort County and was reared in the District of Columbia. She relocated to Pamlico County in the 1970s. She was a member of Anointed Remnant Church and was employed in the food service and garment industry. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Piney Grove Disciples of Christ Church with the Rev. Farris Slade officiating. Burial will be in Piney Grove Church Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Frederick Hackney; one son, Terrence Hackney of Arapahoe; two daughters, Tanshell Curry of Japan and Kinshata Hackney of New Bern; one brother, Mohammed Abuie of Boston; two sisters, Ellen Wallace of New Bern and Dora Hackney of Atlanta; and five grandchildren. Robert Purcell Hadley
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Dr. Robert Purcell Hadley, 70, of 110 Cherokee Trial, died Saturday, November 11 2000 at the Beaufort County Hospital in Washington, N.C. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Ken Crawley officiating. Dr. Hadley was a pathologist having served at Wilson Memorial Hospital until 1967 and retired from the Beaufort County Hospital in October of 1999. Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Cox Hadley; daughter Julia Hadley of Wilson; seven sons Mark A. Hadley of Seoul, Korea, Matthew P. Hadley of Richmond Virginia, R. Ethan Hadley of Tokyo, Japan, Scott Bowden of Chocowinity N.C., Chris Bowden, Stephen Bowden and Michael Bowden of Washington, N.C.; four grandsons and two granddaughters. Phyllis Berry Hagood
ARLINGTON, TX - Phyllis B. Hagood, 44, of Arlington, formerly of Engelhard, died Aug. 16, in Arlington after a gallant and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 6, 1950 to Mattie M. Berry of Englehard and the late Earl Berry. She was married to Richard Hagood of Raleigh in 1972. Mrs. Hagood was educated in Hyde County schools, graduating from Mattamuskeet School in 1969. She received a degree in business from Hardbarger School of Business in Raleigh in 1970. She was a member of Rush Creek Baptist Church where she was leader of the Awana Girls' Auxillary. She was a homemaker. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are daughters, Kelly and Stacey of the home; sister and brother-in-law Martha and Freddie Harris of Askewville; 4 nieces and one nephew; maternal grandfather, Dan Midgette of Edenton. Preceding her in death are her father Earl Berry, a sister Barbara Berry and a brother Bradley Berry. The funeral was held August 18 at Emerald Hills Funeral Home in Kennedale. Burial was at Emerald Hills Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held Sept. 9 at Engelhard Baptist Church where she attended during her youth and was pianist for several years. Thelma B. Jernigan Haislett
Thelma B. Jernigan Haislett, 86, died Oct. 18, 1997, in Sentara Bayside Hospital. She was born in Belhaven, N.C., and was a practical nurse retiring after 25 years. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis A. Torres of Virginia Beach; a son, Robert S. Jernigan Jr. of Virginia Beach; a brother, James C. Beasley and his wife, Pat, of Virginia Beach; three granddaughters, Lynda and her husband, Raymond Olson of Florida, Pamela and her husband, Ron Muth of North Dakota, Dominique Torres of Virginia Beach; a grandson, Henry ''Chip'' Torres III of North Dakota; three great-granddaughters, Brooke, Whitney and Kelly; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Oct. 22 at her daughter's home in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Judith Meyer. Burial will be private. Woodlawn Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Bessie Mae Boyd Hales
Mrs. Bessie Mae Boyd Hales, 86, formerly of Washington, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at the Bermuda Terrace Nursing and Rehab Center of Advance. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, with pastor Tim Lanier officiating. Mrs. Hales was born in Pitt County on July 3, 1919. She was the daughter of the late John Henry Boyd and Leather Moore Boyd. She was married to William Brooks Hales, who preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1980. She was a seamstress with Samsons Shirt Factory for 24 years and retired in 1981. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include one daughter, Edna Blackwelder of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Billy B. Hales of Pikeville, Terry L. Hales of Winston-Salem and Dewey T. Hales of Greenville; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dalton R. Hales. Lois Clayton Hall
Mrs. Lois Cayton Hall, age 73, a resident of Ridgewood Nursing Home and a former resident of East Haven Apartments, died Tuesday evening, January 2, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital. A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday January 4, 2007 at the Friendship Cemetery located on Old Sandhill Road, in the Small Community, Aurora. Pastor Dan Woods will officiate the service Mrs. Hall was born September 6, 1933, daughter of the late Henry Wade Cayton and Vivian Courtney Cratch Cayton. She married Wilber Lee Bonner who preceded her in death. Mrs. Hall was a homemaker. She is survived by her three sons: Steve Bonner of Washington, William “Butch” Bonner of Lakeland, FL and Timothy Bonner of Elizabeth City; her two sisters: Margaret Clark and Elizabeth Edwards both of Chocowinity; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Shirley Whitehurst Hall
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Mrs. Shirley Whitehurst Hall, 67, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Bethel Cemetery. Born in Beaufort County, N.C. she was a daughter of the late Garland Thomas and Lina Davenport Whitehurst. A former resident of Pitt County, N.C., she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Michael Hall of Garner; daughter, Kay Barfield of Hartsville; and grandchildren, Jeremy Hall, Rachel Hall and Kyle Murray. Fletcher Darnell Hamilton
Elder Fletcher Darnell Hamilton, 54, of 311 Cayton Landing Road, Aurora, died Monday, March 27, 2006, at Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Reids Chapel Church of Deliverance, Aurora, with Bishop George Barrow officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Hamilton was born in Beaufort County on Aug. 23, 1951. He was the son of the late Everett and Mary Harrell Hamilton. He attended Beaufort County schools. He was married to Beverly Purdue Hamilton, who survives. Before his health declined, he served as pastor of Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church and Woodstock Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, Preston Watson of Grifton, William Purdue of Chocowinity, Carl Johnson of Alabama and Christopher Johnson of Maryland; five daughters, Sherry Chapman of Indiana, Danielle Hamilton of California, Chantel Hamilton of the home, Charlene McKenzie of New Bern and Belinda Adams of Washington; 19 grandchildren; two sisters, Shelia Howard of Chocowinity and Monica Roberson of Riverhead, N.Y.; and six brothers, Alton Hamilton of Chocowinity, Jerry Hamilton of Aurora, Dean Hamilton of Edward, Dennis Hamilton and Oscar Roberson, both of Greenville, and Carl Roberson of Richmond, Va. Latoya Gouldy Hamilton
Ms. Latoya Gouldy Hamilton, 24, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Macedonia Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Pantego, with Elder Donald Peartree officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Hamilton was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 10, 1983. She was the daughter of Clarence and Janice Hamilton of Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a 2001 graduate of Nazareth High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. This upcoming spring semester, she would have earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting at Pace University. She was employed by North Fork Bank as a bank teller. She was a member of New Hope Family Worship Center. Survivors include two brothers, Darryl Hamilton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dwayne Hamilton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and one sister, Claudeen Hamilton of Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Mary Jane Jones Hamilton, 72, of 1739 Spring Creek Road, Aurora, died Saturday, July 15, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Saint John Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Winfred Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington. Mrs. Hamilton was born in Craven County on Nov. 5, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Woodford Jones and Laurarene Harper Jennette. She attended the Beaufort County schools. She was employed at Samsons Shirt Factory prior to her retirement. She was married to George I. Hamilton, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother Board. Survivors include four sons, Marvin Hamilton and Cordice Hamilton, both of Aurora, Andra Harper of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Larry Hamilton of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Marilyn Knight of Aurora, and Hope Hamilton and Erica Moore, both of Providence, R.I.; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Annie Smallwood and Laura Jennette, both of Aurora, Christine Wright of New Bern, Frances King of Vanceboro, and Joyce Jones of Ernul; and four brothers, Joseph Harper and Stephen Jennette, both of Aurora, and Jerry Jones and Woodford Jones Jr., both of Ernul. She was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Hamilton; two sisters, Bessie Johnson and Doris Scott, and three brothers, Larry Harper, James Jennette and Andrew Jones. VIRGINIA BEACH - Steve Glenn Hamilton, 63, of the 4700 block of Open Greens Drive, died Dec. 5, 2003, in his residence. Born in Washington, N.C., Mr. Hamilton had retired from Norfolk Southern as a conductor after 40 years of service. He was a member of Virginia Beach Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Brenda C. Hamilton; a son, Steve G. Hamilton Jr., both of Virginia Beach; and three sisters. A funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by Dr. J.D. Norris Jr. with visitation following. CHOCOWINITY - Mrs. Patricia Levatta Hanberry-Blount, 44, of Chocowinity, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Mt. Vernon, NY. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 5 at 2 PM at Randolph Funeral Home in Washington, NC. The wake will be from 7 to 8 PM Monday. Burial will follow at Moore Cemetery in Washington, NC. Surviving are three children, Stephanie Hanberry, Ronald Hanberry, and Bashawn Hanberry; three sisters, Geraldine Williford, Teresa Patterson, and Sonya Bailey; five brothers, Robert Sherrell, Shemeek Hanberry, Johnnie Hanberry, Roosevelt Mack and Michael Mack; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Hemet Lee Hannaford
Hemet Lee Hannaford, 79, died Saturday of a heart attack at Hemet Valley Healthcare. Inurnment will be in Riverside National Cemetery. Harford Funeral Home in Hemet is handling arrangements. Mr. Hannaford, who was born in Washington, N.C., lived in Hemet for 12 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a minister for 30 years. He was a member of the Unity Church of the Valley. He is survived by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Ellie Childers of Newport Beach; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward L. of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a sister, Elmira of Cincinnati. Gloria Jean Hawkins Hannah
Mrs. Gloria Jean Hawkins Hannah, age 55, a resident of 1482 Slatestone Road, Washington, died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital. Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 8, 2007 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, conducted by Billy Pollard. Mrs. Hannah was born in Beaufort County on September 2, 1951. She was the daughter of Mary “Polly” Smith Hawkins and the late Lawrence “Junior” Hawkins. Mrs. Hannah was a homemaker. On May 1, 1970 she married Billy Ray Hannah, who survives. Survivors include her husband, Billy Ray Hannah of the home, two daughters, Laura Denise Caraway and Patsy Ruth Tyson both of Washington, one son, Curtis Mathew Hannah of Wilson; her mother, Mary “Polly” Smith Hawkins of Washington; three sisters, Janice Grissom of Chocowinity, Priscilla Bright and Evelyn Tyson both of Washington and four grandchildren. Janie P. Hansley
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Mrs. Janie P. Hansley, 95, passed away Dec. 29, 1998. Born in Washington, NC., she moved to Jacksonville in 1951 and was the widow of the late Rev. Quillie Hansley who died in 1979. She was also preceded in death by her son, Rev. Wingate A. Hansley and a daughter, Janie Lois Hansley. Survivors are 2 daughters, Nancy Alice Driggers of Lake City, SC. and Jewell Gay Thomsen of Jacksonville; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hansley was a member of the Wesconnett Free Will Baptist Church, 6007 Seaboard Ave. where funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31st with her son-in-law, Rev. Lucy Riddick Hanson
Lucy Riddick Hanson, 92, formerly of Fairfax Ave., died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in a Virginia Beach health care center. She was a retired secretary for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She was born in Belhaven, N.C., and was the widow of Palmer O. Hanson. She was also predeceased by her previous husband, Max Brinson Connor Sr. Mrs. Hanson was a former member of Second Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, the New Hope Methodist Church in New Hope, N.C., and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include a daughter, Jean C. Szwed of Ocala, Fla.; two sons, Thomas A. Connor of Norfolk and Max B. Connor Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Harriett B. Slaughter of Pascagoula, Miss.; a brother, W. Benjamin Riddick of Nags Head, N.C.; and five grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. today for visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. Teresa Jane McCoy Hanson
Mrs. Teresa Jane McCoy Hanson, 52, of 100 Amanda’s Lane, Chocowinity, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Vineyard Christian Center, N.C. Highway 33 East, Chocowinity, with pastors Stanley Jones and Annie Norman officiating. Burial will follow in the Hanson family cemetery. Mrs. Hanson was born in Alexandria, Va., on July 18, 1953. She was the daughter of the late Vernon Wesley McCoy and Annie Tyree McCoy. She was married to William “Bill” Harvey Hanson, who survives. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Vineyard Christian Center, Chocowinity. Survivors include one son, Allen Hanson of Arizona; one daughter, Karen Shifflet of Simpson; three grandchildren and five brothers and sisters. Eula Alligood Jones Hardee
Mrs. Eula Alligood Jones Hardee, 81, a resident of 3110 Bonnerton Road, Aurora, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Dublin Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Aurora, conducted by the Rev. Wiley “Bud” Hopkins and the Rev. Taffy Hopkins. Burial will follow in Dublin Grove Church Cemetery. The following will serve as pallbearers: Dwight Williams, Jimmy Potter, Marvin Fulcher, Steve Sedar and Ronald Voliva. Mrs. Hardee was born in Beaufort County on January 8, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Jetha Roe Alligood and Ella Mea Woolard Alligood. She owned and operated Jones Cafe in Aurora for many years. Later, she worked at Smith Hearing Aid Center in Washington. She was a member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She was married to Carl B. Jones Sr., who preceded her in death in June 2002. Survivors include one daughter, Diane Jones Hopkins of Aurora; two sons, Carl Jones Jr. and Paul Jones, both of Aurora; two brothers, Ernest Alligood of Aurora and Buddy Alligood of Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Naomi Taylor of Snow Camp; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Nellie B. Hardee
Nellie B. Hardee, 79, 907 S. Lake Pleasant Road, Apopka, died Thursday, Dec. 5. Born in Washington, N.C., she moved to Apopka from Virginia in 1963. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Apopka. Alton Keith Harding, Sr.
Mr. Alton Keith Harding Sr., 81, formerly of Cherry Road, Washington, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington. In keeping with Mr. Harding’s wishes, his body was donated to anatomical research and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Harding was born in Chocowinity on March 2, 1926. He was the son of the late William Joseph “Jody” Harding and Maude Hardison Harding. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and later served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was married to the former Dorothy Deloris Fields, who preceded him in death. He had worked as the manager of the former Travelers Service Station in Chocowinity and later worked with the Beaufort County ABC Board in Washington. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Chocowinity. Survivors include one son, Alton Keith Harding Jr. of Washington; one daughter, Rebecca H. Provost of Washington and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William R. Harding and Joseph Harold Harding, and one sister, Helen Downs. Arrangements are by Paul Funeral Home, Washington. Mrs. Betty Lou Congleton Harding, age 60, a resident of 681 Harding Lane, Chocowinity, NC died Saturday March 3, 2007 at Her home. Mrs. Harding was born in Beaufort County on September 10, 1946 daughter of the late Arthur Congleton, Sr. and the late Blanche Boyd Congleton. She was a 1964 graduate of Washington High School and continued her education at Roanoke Bible College. She married Phillip Ryan Harding on March 21, 1969 who survives. Mrs. Harding was a bookkeeper having worked at the former Hamilton Beach and the Washington Daily News. She was a member of Haw Branch Church of Christ where she played the piano for twenty years. Surviving along with her husband Phil of the home is a son: Jeffrey Harding and his wife Kelly of Chocowinity and a brother: Arthur Congleton, Jr. of Belhaven. J. Carl Harding
J. Carl Harding, 87, who had owned and managed beauty salons in Washington for more than 60 years, died of respiratory failure and Alzheimer's disease Nov. 29 at Mount Vernon Hospital. Mr. Harding, who lived in Washington, was born in Chocowinity, N.C. He moved to this area in the early 1920s and opened Harding's Salon of Beauty on North Capitol Street. He later moved the salon to Kennedy Street NW, then to Virginia Avenue NW. He continued to manage the salon until October 1987. He was a member of Capitol Hill United Methodist Church and was a frequent golfer at the Haines Point golf course. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie A. John James Harding
Mr. John James Harding, 83, of 4722 U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington, N.C., passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Ridgewood Manor nursing home in Washington, N.C. A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, 1377 S. Asbury Church Road in Washington, with the Rev. David L. Ollison Sr., pastor, and the Rev. Guylester Harding Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. John was born November 20, 1922, the oldest son of the late John and Fannie Holley Harding. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ever C. McCoy and two sisters, Thelma Frazier and Laura Harding. On September 11, 1967, he married Adell Taylor. He attended Washington Colored High School. He worked on his father’s farm until he was drafted to active duty in the United States Army in 1943. He served in World War II with the U.S. Cavalry, also he was a Buffalo soldier and was discharged in 1945 with honors. John relocated to New York City in 1955 and was employed with the Veterans Administration Hospital as a lead food-service worker. He retired in 1980. He moved back home and worked in Archie Harding’s Shopping Bag store as an assistant manager for five years. He was a member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church since 1934. He was a former Sunday school superintendent, a trustee, a member of the Senior Choir (parliamentarian) and sang with the Mount Olive Male Chorus. John is survived by a devoted wife, Adell T. Harding of the home; five brothers, Vance D. Harding (Jessie) of Mattapan, Mass.; Clarence M. Harding (Renner), Archie A. Harding (Alice), Donald F. Harding (Sandra), Fenner L. Harding (Patricia), all of Harding’s Village, Washington, N.C.; four sisters: Margaret H. Lawrence (Arthur) and Janice H. Gibbs (Johnny) of Harding’s Village, Washington, N.C.; Alice H. Williams (Alfred) of New York City and Jessie H. Burks (Martin) of Bronx, New York; five brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, one stepson, Gordon Erkins; one stepdaughter, Martha Richardson; one stepgranddaughter, Teresa Erkins all of Bronx, New York; one goddaughter, Katrina Willis; two aunts, seven uncles, 22 nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends. She attended Harden Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and Boston University. She completed her certification in medical technology and maintained her certification as American Medical Technologist. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hyde Chapter. In 1979, she was married to Donald G. Harris and moved to North Carolina where she and her husband opened the Harris Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Fairfield which they have continued to operate. Surviving are her husband, Donald G. Harris; a son, Richard Leonard Fletcher Jr. of Manns Harbor; a daughter, Margaret Fletcher Tillman of Fairfield; a stepdaughter, Jael M. Reynolds of Engelhard; two sisters, Lydia S. Gramer of Forth Worth, Texas, and Georgia S. Johnson of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren, Whitney Corrinne Tillman and Katelynn Denise Tillman. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the gravesite in Fulford Cemetery with Scott Sukeforth officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. Mrs. Dera Mae Sullivan Harris, age 86, formerly of the Acre Station community, Highway 32, Plymouth, NC, died early Sunday morning, June 24, 2007, with family members watching over her at the home of her daughter, Viola H. On October 31, 1941, she married Dalton Paul Harris, Sr., who predeceased her on August 6, 1989. She was a member of Rosemary Church of Christ. She was a hard working and loving mother. She lived a simple life. She enjoyed sewing, reading, riding her bicycle, and growing a huge vegetable garden each year. These hobbies were taken away from her when she lost her eyesight to macular degeneration several years ago, but she still loved life and “kept on doing from knowing how to do”. She always said “you have to make do with what you have to do with”. She was a cancer survivor of seventeen years. She had been in declining health for the past two years and seriously ill for the last month. She is survived by four children: Norma H. Latham; Viola H. West and her husband, Rudy, all of Amherst, VA; William H. Harris of the home place, Highway 32, Plymouth, NC; and Deborah H. CARY - Ferol Vance Harris, 93, a former resident of Washington, North Carolina, died Thursday, September 9, 2004, at Glenaire North Skilled Nursing Unit, Cary, NC. Ferol was born April 15, 1911, in Pike Road, Beaufort County, NC. He received a BS in Agriculture in 1934 from North Carolina State University. He retired after 38 years as a Supervisor with the USDA Farmers Home Administration. Ferol was a Mason and active participant in church and community organizations in Washington, NC. Ferol and his wife Helen moved to Cary in 1986 and became charter residents of Glenaire in 1993. He was also a member of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, Cary, NC. Mrs. Helena Russ Harris, 93, of Spencer, Ind., died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at her residence. Funeral services were held 12 noon Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Indiana, with Pastor Lawrence Mitchell and Pastor Patrick Kuhlman officiating. Friends called at the Faith Lutheran Church in Bloomington on Saturday from 10:30 am until 12 noon. She was the daughter of the late Charles Wilson Russ and Lillian Warren Russ. Mrs. Harris attended Duke University and graduated from Peace College in N.C. She worked at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. as a secretary. Mrs. Harris had previously worked for a family business. She was a member of the D.A.R. and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Harris attended Faith Lutheran Church in Bloomington. Survivors include her two daughters, Bonnie Tinsley and her husband Albert of Spencer, Ind., and Gail Champion and her husband Don of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Albert "Skip" Tinsley and his wife Leann of Plymouth, Ind., Lane Vargas and her husband Richard of Bloomington, Ind., Scott Tinsley and his wife Heather of Salem, Ind., David Tinsley and his wife Kristina of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Pam Burns and her husband Buck of West Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Tania Entz and her husband Marvin of Newton Kan., and Stephen Champion and his wife Robin of Raleigh, N.C. and thirteen grandchildren. Mr. Hurley Harris, Jr., 47, of 791 Fourth St., Aurora, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at home. Lucy Mae Lilley Harris
Lucy Mae Lilley Harris, 88, passed on to glory at the James River Convalescent Center (JRCC) on Thursday, July 19, 2007. Born on May 10, 1919 in Washington, North Carolina, Mrs. Harris was the daughter of Joseph Jordan Lilley and Pearl Swanner Lilley. She was a resident of Newport News for over 66 years and a community leader in numerous clubs and organizations. Some of these organizations include Parkview Elementary School PTA, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Warwick Woman’s Club, and Christian Women’s Club. She was an accomplished pianist who entertained us all with her talent, played at the theater, and also taught piano for many years. She was an active member of Hilton Christian Church and sang in the choir. She also served as secretary and treasurer of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. As volunteers with Youth for Christ, Mrs. Harris and her husband, Jesse Randolph Harris, were selected Volunteers of the Year in 1982. Mrs. Harris, a breast cancer survivor, was also a volunteer with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She and her husband partnered in several businesses including Mister Softee, Charles Chips, and the local division of the Dr Pepper Bottling Company. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Randolph Harris, daughter Mary Lou Harris Musser, son-in-law Donald Wayne Hill, and grandson Jeffrey Wayne Hill. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Jordan Lilley of Santa Rosa, CA, her son, J.R. Harris, Jr. and his wife Angie of Charlotte, NC, her daughter, Patti Anne Harris Hill of Annandale, VA, her son-in-law John (Jay) Musser, eleven grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and long time roommate at JRCC, Annie Mae Harper. Mrs. Harris will be remembered by her family as Mommie Mommie/Grum, and by the community as a kind, loving woman who, as her final gift, donated her body to science. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, July 29th at 2 p.m. at Hilton Christian Church, followed by a reception and visitation with the family. Mr. Sylvester Harris, 82, of 407 Washington St., Washington, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital. He was a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club, a member of AARP and provided transportation to senior citizens and friends. He was a part-time staff member at Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St., Washington. He was a member of Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington, where he serve in the Willing Workers Club. Mr. Isaac Hawkins of 62 Overlook Drive, Jackson, N.J., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at East Orange Veterans Hospital, Orange, N.J. GRIMESLAND - Lucy Ellis Smith Hawkins, 84, died Sunday , Oct. 2, 2005, at her residence. Funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the United House of Prayer for all People. Mrs. Hawkins was the third of eight children born to the late Dolphus and Bertha Smith. She was a native of Beaufort County, but spent most of her life in Pitt County. She attended area schools, and retired from the Carolina Leaf Tobacco Company. Mrs. Hawkins joined the United House of Prayer for all People, where she served faithfully as an usher and treasurer until moving to Raleigh. She was a loving person who always carried a beautiful smile. She loved working in the yard and also enjoyed quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Hawkins Sr.; two brothers, Benjamin Smith and Tilton Smith; three sisters, Mattie Smith, Pearl Clark-Garrison and Hazel Howard. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, two sons, Milton Hawkins Jr. of Raleigh and Ellis T. Mr. Julian Mixon Hayes of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and formerly of Aurora, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006. Mr. Hayes was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 6, 1918. Minerva E. Hayes, 66, of the 3800 block of Greenwood Drive, died July 23, 1999, in Maryview Medical Center. Camille LaFrage Hedgepeth, 90, of Chesapeake, went to the Lord on Nov. 3, 2000. She was born in Washington, N.C., and was a lifelong resident of Norfolk. She will be remembered as a loving and giving grandmother who always put others' needs before her own. She is survived by her son, John W. NEWPORT NEWS - Sportswriter Earle West Hellen Jr., 68, who retired from the Daily Press in 1984, died Friday, Oct. 27, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Hellen was well known in golf circles in Virginia. After his retirement from the Daily Press, he was chief writer for The Virginia Golfer. "He was Johnny on the spot when it came to golf," said Pete Britton, the golf pro at the Williamsburg Country Club. "I first met Earle when I was the pro at the Suffolk Golf Course and have stayed in touch all these years. He was good for golf, and we're going to miss him." "Golf was the love of his life," said his widow, Dorothy. "And writing for The Virginia Golfer really kept him going after he retired from the newspaper." "We made him an honorary member of the Southern Chapter Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA back in 1986," said Fran Herrelko, the golf pro at Salisbury Country Club. "Earle showed up for all our major tournaments. He didn't miss too many of our smaller ones, either. He always made you feel appreciated." "Earle did a super job of covering all our events here at Kingsmill," said Al Burns, the club pro at the Kingsmill Golf Course. "I first met Earle in 1975, and he didn't miss too many pro-ams. He had a great rapport with the pros and the golfers. He will be missed." Mr. Hellen, who battled myasthenia gravis, a neuro-muscular disorder, for the past 18 months, joined the Daily Press in January 1947 as sports editor. He left in June of the same year to accept a similar post with the Greensboro, N.C., Record, where he served as sports editor from 1947 until 1969. After a year's absence from the newspaper business, Mr. Hellen accepted a position as sportswriter with The Times-Herald. He wrote for the Daily Press and The Times-Herald until his retirement. A lifetime member of the U.S. Golf Writers Association, Mr. Hellen covered a variety of sports for the newspapers, including golf, high school and college sports and professional hockey. Born in Washington, N.C., Mr. Hellen grew up in Greenville, N.C. He attended the University of North Carolina, where in 1942 he received his bachelor's degree in journalism. After graduation he served in the Navy in the Pacific theatre, achieving the rank of lieutenant senior grade. While in Greensboro, Mr. Hellen organized the Carolinas Golf Writers Organization and served as executive secretary from 1957 until 1969. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Newport News, the National Motorsports Press Association, the Virginia Golf Writers Association, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the Atlantic Coast Conference Writers Association. He was former president of the Southern Motorsports Press Association. Additional survivors include a daughter, Judy Hellen of Greensboro; a son, Earle W. Hellen III of Chelmsford, Mass.; a sister, Christine Snuggs of Albemarle, N.C.; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Newport News by Dr. James White. Burial will be in Greensboro Tuesday. SAVANNAH, GA - Eleanor Vendrick Henries, 73, died Friday, January 05, 2007 at Hospice House. Eleanor and her husband, Audrey were married for 55 years. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife dedicated to the well being of her family and to helping others less fortunate than herself. She was very talented and always full of energy. She was constantly busy with household chores and numerous hobbies which included painting, floral arrangement creations, interior decorating and outside plants, flowers and shrubs. But she was never too busy to assist someone in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Eleanor was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. Mr. Hill was a veteran of the US Army during WWII. He was a man of diversified interests ranging from flying and boating to ham radios and television. He was always willing to help others. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Vause Hill; a daughter, Brenda Spooner of Castle Hayne, NC; a son, Freeman Shaw Hill Jr. and wife Susan of El Paso, TX; a stepdaughter, Eve Johnson of Mocksville, NC; two stepsons, Ken Johnson and wife Cheryl of Jacksonville, NC; and Kevin Johnson and wife Dawn of Winston-Salem, NC; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was owner and operator of Walter Hill Moving & Storage and later was co-owner and operator of the Y Grocery on River Road along with his wife Faye. He was a former member of Tau Tribe No. 18 Improved Order of Red Men and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Hill is survived by a daughter: Aleta H. Neel and her husband Bob of Greenville; a stepson: Royce P. Barrow and his wife Ann of Dunn; a brother: Lester C. Hill of Blounts Creek; a sister: Vina H. Mr. James Byron “Jimmy” Hodges, age 58, a resident of 735 Latham Street, Belhaven, passed Wednesday May 23, 2007 at his home. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, May 25, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Belhaven, conducted by Rev. Michael Isbell and Rev. Raleigh Castelloe. Burial will follow in Belhaven Community Cemetery. The following will serve as pallbearers: Terry Sparrow, Doug Clark, Doug Barnes, Georgie Baker, Jimmy Coltrain, Johnny Pinner, Jake Hodges and Doug Bright. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers: Laura Ann Baker, Olivia Baker, Leann Dixon, Carol Clark, Deb Sparrow and Myra Pinner. Mr. Hodges was born in Washington, NC on November 4, 1948. He was the son of James Willis Hodges and Sibyl Askew Hodges, both of whom survive. Mr. Hodges was a 1967 graduate of John A Wilkinson High School and graduated from the College of the Albemarle and attended Atlantic Christian College. He was an Administrative Officer II at the Hyde Correctional Institute in Fairfield. Mr. Hodges was very active in this community. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Belhaven and the Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club for 30 years where he had served as President and was currently the Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Hodges served on the Belhaven Town Board 23½ years. He served on the Pungo District Hospital Junior Hospital Board for four years. Mr. Hodges was President of the Belhaven Elementary School PTO for five years. He was a member of the Northside High School Athletic Boosters, serving as President for one year. Currently Mr. Hodges was serving on the Beaufort County A.B.C. Board, a post he has held for 12 years. On January 23, 1972, Mr. Hodges married the former Elizabeth “Libby” Castelloe, who survives. Surviving with his wife are his parents, James and Sibyl Hodges of Belhaven; his son: James “Brandon” Hodges and his wife, Shannon of Mebane; his grandchildren: “Kayla” Leslie Hodges and “Jayce” Byron Hodges; his sister: Mary Jo Allen and her husband, Bonner of Pantego; three nephews: Anthony, Raymond and Michael Allen all of Pantego; sister-in-law: Caroline Rouse of LaGrange, NC; brother-in-law: Rev. James Willis Hodges
Mr. James Willis Hodges, age 93, a former resident of 695 East Main Street, Belhaven died Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Washington. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today, February 19, 2008 at the First Christian Church of Belhaven officiated by Rev. Steve Green and Mike Isbell. Burial will follow at Belhaven Community Cemetery. Mr. Hodges was born in Hyde County on January 13, 1915 son of the late James Byron Hodges and the late Mary Elizabeth Swindell Hodges. He was a graduate of the former Swan Quarter High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married the former Sibyl Josephine Askew on February 18, 1938 who survives. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Belhaven, where he served as elder and deacon. Mr. Hodges was a past charter member of the Belhaven Lions Club, he served on the Town of Belhaven Board for twenty-six years, was a retired Volunteer Fireman of the Belhaven Volunteer Fire Department having served for thirty-three years, was a member of the Belhaven Masonic Lodge 509 AF&AM and a member of the American Legion Post 249 for sixty-one years. Surviving along with Mr. Hodges’ wife, Sibyl is a daughter: Mary Jo Allen and her husband, Bonner of Pantego; a daughter-in-law: Elizabeth Hodges of Belhaven; three grandchildren: Anthony and Michael Allen of Pantego and James “Brandon” Hodges and his wife, Shannon of Mebane; two great grandchildren: “Kayla” Leslie Hodges and “Jayce” Bryon Hodges; two cousins and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Holland was born in Charlotte, NC on May 3, 1937, daughter of the late Richard and Alice Beck Faulkner. On November 24, 1957, she married Furman M. Holland. Mrs. Holland worked as a manager in retail clothing and then as a substitute schoolteacher before retirement. She moved with her family to Belhaven, NC in 1983. Mrs. Holland was a member of the First Christian Church of Belhaven. Mrs. Holland is survived by her husband: Furman M. Holland of Belhaven; three children: Melita Holland of Belhaven, Dee Holland of Lacross, VA and her partner, Wanda Brock, and Jay Holland and his wife, Brandi of Garner, NC and two grandchildren: Sammy and Brent Holland of Garner. She is preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Faulkner. Annie Bell Holley of the 800 block of Bells Mills Road died Oct. 20, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Born in Belhaven, N.C., she was a homemaker, a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church and its Deaconess and Usher boards. She is survived by her husband, Lorenza Holley; a daughter, Betty J. Vincent of Chesapeake; a son, Claudis Holley of Maryland; several grandchildren; several children she raised; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church by Dr. Kim Brown with burial in Lee's Chapel Church Cemetery. Mr. George William Holley Sr., 82, of 128 W. 12th St., Washington, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at home. A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Washington, with the Rev. David L. Ollison Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mr. Holley was born in Washington on June 26, 1925. He attended the Washington city public schools. On Oct. 22, 1948, he married the former Doris Louise Clark. His employment was in the logging industry until he and his wife moved to New York, N.Y., where he was employed by the Careful Cleaning Co. for more than 35 years. After retirement, he relocated to Washington. He was a member of Mt. Olive AME Zion Church. Mr. Marshall “Mike” Calip Holloway Jr., 74, of 628 Croatan St., Belhaven, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven. Mr. Holloway was born in Beaufort County on March 10, 1932. He was the son of the late Marshall and Robena Coviel Holloway. He attended the Beaufort County schools. He was an Army veteran. In 1963, he married Lillie Mann Holloway, who preceded him in death Nov. 6, 1999. He was the retired owner and captain of the Edward J. Piszek, Inc., Belhaven. He was a member of the Golden Trowel Masonic Lodge No. 97. He was a member of St. Reddick Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee. Survivors include four daughters, Felecia Windley and April Holloway, both of Belhaven, Daphne Brewington of Greenville, and Pamela Satterthwaite of Belhaven; four sons, Kenneth Holloway, Jeffrey Holloway, Mike Holloway Jr. and Maurice Holloway, all of Belhaven; three sisters, Louise Spencer and Harriett Holloway, both of Belhaven, and Julie Hudson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Golet Holloway and Johnny Holloway, both of Belhaven; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Aubrey Ellis Hollowell, age 75, of Belhaven, N.C., died peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2006 at Harnett Manor nursing home in Lillington, N.C. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006, at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven. A graveside service will follow at Belhaven Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven. Paul Harris, Walton P. O’Neal Jr., Neal O’Neal, P.J. Harris, Tom Mackel and Robert McMurry will serve as pallbearers. Dr. Charles Boyette will serve as an honorary pallbearer. A native of Edenton, he was born on February 23, 1931, to the late Ernest L. Hollowell and Effie Parks Hollowell. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was a generous friend to many and will be greatly missed. Mr. Hollowell served as a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1950 to 1953 in the Korean War. He was the recipient of three Bronze Service Stars and the U.N. Service Medal. He served with the 40th Infantry Division. Mr. Hollowell was a 1958 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, obtaining a bachelor’s-of-science degree in pharmacy. In 1984 the N.C. Pharmaceutical Association certified him as a doctor of pharmacy. Mr. Hollowell began his career as a pharmacist in 1959 at Cromley’s Drug Store and continued at Northside Pharmacy in Raleigh, N.C., and at Vinson’s Pharmacy in Zebulon. In 1977, he moved to Belhaven and worked at Olde Towne Pharmacy. In 1980, he began working at O’Neal’s Pharmacy in both Belhaven and Swan Quarter, where he worked until his retirement. Mr. Hollowell was a very active member of the community as a member of the N.C. Pharmaceutical Association, UNC Alumni Association, Lions Club, Jaycees of North Carolina, Veterans of Foreign Wars Association, and he formerly served on the Beaufort County Board of Health. Mr. Hollowell’s hobbies included photography, motorcycling, ham radios, music and, most of all, talking with friends and strangers who soon became friends. He enjoyed writing humorous letters to the editor and loved making people smile. He was also a member of Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Hollowell had a very inspiring, optimistic attitude and displayed dignity and courage during a 10-year battle with cancer. The lives of his family and friends will forever be richer because of his influences. While we mourn his death, we rejoice in the blessing of his life. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Evelyn Riddle Hollowell; his daughter, Marti Elaine Hollowell, and brother, Guy Hollowell, of Edenton. Mrs. Hooten was a nursing assistant at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, VA and also for Portsmouth General Hospital. She was a foster mother of five children, was a caregiver for an elderly woman for seven years and was a member of Wades Point Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include; two daughters, Dorothy Kirk and husband, John of Belhaven, Shirley Bailey and husband, Steve of Efland; one son, John Hooten and wife, Judy of Belhaven, nine grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren. William Jarvis Hooten
William Jarvis Hooten, editor of the El Paso Times for 30 years, died Friday at age 90. Hooten, who retired in 1970, was born in Chocowinity, N.C., on Sept. 5, 1900. He came to El Paso in 1918 and worked as a telegrapher for the Associated Press for nine years before joining the El Paso Herald in 1927 as a reporter. Mr. Levi "Paul" Hopkins, 47, of 773 Old Pamlico Beach Road West, Belhaven, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at his home. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Pamlico Beach Community Cemetery at Ryder Hill, conducted by pastor Medford Hopkins. The following will serve as active pallbearers: Robbie Hopkins, Nicky Hopkins, Freddie Lee Hopkins, Steve Foster, Donnie Keech and Dwayne Hopkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Jody Hopkins, Josh Hopkins, Winkie Underhill, Roberto Loya, Clyde Kirk, Michael Hopkins and Bonner Sawyer Jr. Mr. Hopkins was born in Beaufort County on December 27, 1959. He was the son of Murphy Jackson Hopkins Sr. and the late Margaret Delores Daniels Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins worked as a commercial fisherman. On October 4, 1982, he married the former Tina Marie Guest, who survives. Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Heather Foster and Justin Hopkins both of Belhaven; a son, Christopher Hopkins, of Belhaven; his father, Murphy Jackson Hopkins Sr. of Belhaven; a brother, Murphy Hopkins Jr. of Belhaven; and one grandson. Ms. Nellie Rebecca "Becky" Asby Hopkins of 304 Village Circle, Washington, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Pamlico Memorial Gardens with pastor Phillip Jethro officiating. Ms. Hopkins was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 8, 1939. She was the daughter of Neta Mae Pugh Asby and the late Robert Wilson Asby. She was a 1957 graduate of the former Bath High School. She worked with Care Focus as a home health care nurse until her retirement in 2002. She attended Alligood Church of God. Survivors include one daughter, Bobbie Jo Gibbs of Washington; four sisters, Shelby Muse, Lillian Boyd, Arlene May and Bonita Davenport, all of Washington; four brothers, Barry Asby, Charles Asby, Carl Asby and Danny Asby, all of Washington; four grandchildren; and her former husband, George E. Hopkins of Belhaven. She was preceded in death by one son, George Robert Hopkins Sr., and one brother, Bobby Asby. Mr. Willie Lee Hopkins, 83, of 300 Minuteman Lane, Washington, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Britthaven of Washington. Burial will follow in Whitfield & Whitley Cemetery, Washington. Mr. Hopkins was born in Beaufort County on June 17, 1923. He was the son of the late Ben and Mary Latham Hopkins. He attended the Beaufort County schools. He was married to Ella Gray Grice Hopkins, who preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer. He was a lifelong member of Adamsville Church of God, Washington. Survivors include two daughters, Eunice A. Barrow of Aurora and Mary L. Smith of Washington; three sons, Willie Hopkins Jr. of Jamaica, N.Y., and Paul Wilson and Larry Hopkins, both of Washington; 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. William “Bill” Howard, 74, of 538 West Main St., Belhaven, died Tuesday, May 23, 2007 at his home. He is the son of the late William and Helen Goode Howard. He graduated from Orange High School, in Orange, N.J., St. Phillips College of Texas, RCA Institute in New York City, Sylvania School of Technology in Boston, Mass. He also attended Beaufort County Community College for small engine repair and computer technology. He was married to Evangelyn Howard who survives. Survivors include three daughters, Crystal Mattamore of Los Angeles, Calif., Cheryl Bagley of Bronx, N.Y., Tara Thompson of Columbus, Ohio; two foster daughters, Jenise Fonville-Noels and Jeannette Spencer, both of Maryland; two sons, A. Douglas Howard of Bronx, N.Y. and William “Will” D. Howard II of Belhaven, N.C.; and 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Howard. James J. Howerin, Jr.
Mr. James J. Howerin, Jr., 82, of 14 River Acres East, Washington, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Howerin was born in New Bern, N.C., March 1, 1925, to the late James J. and Irene Tuthill Howerin. He is survived by his wife Athalia Alligood Gravely Howerin of Washington, son Kenneth G. Howerin and wife Fern of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter Katherine Howerin Peralta and husband Raul of Trinity, N.C.; son Keith G. Howerin and wife Jacquelin of Greenville, S.C.; stepchildren William A. Gravely, Jr. and wife Jill, Charles Steven Gravely and wife Martha, Harley Gravely and wife Sherry, all of Washington, N.C., and Athy Gravely Robinson of Creedmoor. He is also survived by nine grandchildren. Mr. Howerin was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Marion Smith Swain, formerly of Washington, N.C. James graduated with the 1942 class of Washington High School and earned a B.S. from Wake Forest University in 1948. Proud to serve his country, he fought as an infantryman in Europe from 1944 to 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Prisoner of War Medal and combat infantry badge. He later served in the Army Reserve for 16 years, being honorably discharged as a captain. James retired from the chemical industry in 1986 after working 7 years with Allied Chemical in Hopewell, Va., and 31 years with E.I. du Pont in Kinston, Wilmington and Monterey, Mexico. Throughout his adult life, James was active in the Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Kinston, N.C., as an elder on the session at Clemmons Presbyterian Church and as an elder on the session at First Presbyterian Church in Washington. He was a longtime member of Civitan Internal Civic Club, serving in all club offices and as lieutenant governor and a member of the district-level Governor’s Council. Always active, he volunteered at the N.C. Estuarium, was president of the Down East Seniors club and was a member of the “Little” Supper Club. Family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Hillside Funeral Service. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 15, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington with the Rev. Darryl C. Evans officiating. James Samuel Howerin, Sr., 79, of the 300 block of Roundtree Drive, passed away on April 19, 2004. He was born in Beaufort County, N.C. to the late Jesse R. Howerin and the late Jennie Clark Howerin. He is survived by his daughter, Emily Selbrede of Virginia Beach; two sons, Robert D. Howerin of Norfolk and James S. Howerin Jr. of Virginia Beach; sister, Ester Bors of Dover, Del.; and seven grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held. David Harold Howland, 42, of the 800 block of W. Princess Anne Road, a gourmet baker, died April 4, 1990, in a hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Bernadine Elliott of Virginia Beach; two sons, Cornelius Green of Medford, Long Island, N.Y., and Darrell Hubbard of New York; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was married to Julia Holloway Hudson, who survives. His employment in North Carolina was with Clyde Potter Seafood Co., Belhaven. He retired from the Imperial Veal and Lamb Corp. in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a member of St. Reddick Missionary Baptist Church, Belhaven. Survivors include four daughters, Linda Leggette of Brooklyn, N.Y., Audrey Palmer of Raleigh, Veronica Moore of Belhaven and Tori Hudson of Pantego; two sisters, Mary Agnes Windley of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Devata Gilliam of Texas; one brother, James Spencer of Belhaven; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Norwood Jennings Hudson, 78, of 155 Farm Lane, Washington, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at the Beaufort County Hospital. On April 29, 1961, he married the former Peggy Pickard, who survives. He was a member of the Pantego Christian Church, where he served as a deacon. He was past president of the Pantego Alumni Association. Survivors include one son, Norwood J. Hudson Jr. of Apple Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Jackie Duckett of Globe, Ariz., and Beth Williard of Belhaven; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. On August, 20, 1960, he married the former Blanche Jeanette Grissom. Mr. Travis was employed for 34 1/2 years with Samson’s Shirt Company. On March 15, 2004, he retired from the Washington Housing Authority as maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Haw Branch Hunting Club and attended Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Blanche, of the home, he is survived by his children: Travis Hudson, Jr. and his wife, Tena; Wanda H. Chandler and her husband, Ronnie, all of Chocowinity, and Chuck Hudson and his wife, Renee of Washington; his grandchildren: Shelley, Jennifer, T.J., Kathryn, Kimberlyn, Bryan, Kathryn and Holly and his great-grandchild: Mason. She had played soccer since she was 8 years old, loved animals, loved Nascar, was a huge Tony Stewart fan and, most of all, she loved the beach. Survivors are her parents of the home; one sister, Danielle Elizabeth Huffman of the home; her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Ruth Sawyer of Belhaven and her paternal grandmother, Eleanor James Cieliesz of Jacksonville. Mrs. Norma C. Humble, age 100, passed away Monday, September 10, 2007, in Washington, North Carolina, at the home of her granddaughter Nikki Kight. Mrs. Humble was born April 16, 1907, in Decatur, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at Hillside Funeral Service Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2 p.m., and the family will receive friends immediately following the service. Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Higgins and son-in-law Kenneth Higgins; granddaughter, Shelly Rebholz and husband John; granddaughter Nikki Kight and husband Roy; a sister, Mildred Jones; five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy Burbage Humes
Mrs. Dorothy Burbage Humes, age 79, died Monday, April 24, 2006. Mrs. Humes was born October 29, 1926 in Beaufort County, NC, the daughter of the late Otis E. Burbage and Rosa Paul Burbage. She was also predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Ralph Humes, who died October 20, 1992. Survivors include her daughters, Sallie Gargis and her husband, Clarence Gargis of Raleigh and Sheila Boyce and her husband, Mike Boyce of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Brock Lavrack of Louisburg, Michael Boyce of Oceana NAS and Brandon Gargis of Raleigh; three step-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Faith Lavrack. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul D. Burbage and O.E. Burbage; and one sister, Evada Clayton. The graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, at Raleigh Memorial Park on Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, with the Rev. Merle Martin officiating. Linda Merriman Hummell
BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN - Linda Hummell, 60, of Battle Creek died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at Care Community. She was born in Washington, North Carolina on February 7, 1944 the daughter of Albert Allen and Alice Irene (Everson) Merriman. Linda graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1962 and continued her education at Kellogg Community College. She worked at the Hastings Manufacturing Company for 30 years and also taught accordion, cheerleading and baton with the Young Americans of America. Linda married Charles Arlan Hummell on December 13, 1978; he preceded her in death on March 6, 1990. She is survived by a son, Ted (Dana) Keniston of Lansing; a daughter, Tara (Rick) Johnson of Battle Creek; her step-mother Virginia Merriman; a grandson, Gavin Keniston; a step-daughter, Ann Magoon of Hastings; four step-sons, Charles (Pat) Hummell of North Carolina, Perry (Jessica) Hummell and Dan (Kelli) Hummell, both of Pennsylvania and Ed Hummell of Kentucky. She is also survived by a brother, Brian Merriman of Battle Creek; several step-grandchildren and one step great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Merriman. Linda attended Garrison Hills Wesleyan Church and was a member of the Middleville VFW Post 7548 Auxiliary, the American Accordion Association, the Michigan Accordion Society and the Great Lakes Accordion Association. Linda enjoyed arts & crafts, sewing, music and volunteering with the 4H Club. At the request of the family, friends may call after 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where they will be received 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2004, at the funeral home with Pastor Rick Weesner officiating. Violet Mae Boyd Hunt
Mrs. Violet Mae Boyd Hunt, age 85, a former resident of 1101 W. 3rd Street, Washington, died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Ridgewood Manor in Washington. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am Monday, October 8, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Pastor George Daniels. Mrs. Hunt was born in Beaufort County on June 9, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. Boyd and Mary Emma Coltrain Boyd. Mrs. Hunt was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the West End Baptist Church. On January 27, 1945, she married James P. Hunt, who preceded her in death, March 31, 1978. Mrs. Hunt is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Hunt Lewis and her husband, James D. Lewis of Washington; her granddaughter, Christie Lewis Potts and her husband, Charles Z. Potts, Jr. of Washington; her grandson, Gregory Hunt Lewis and his wife, Lynn W. Lewis of Bath; her great granddaughter, Morgan A. Potts; her two great grandsons, Latham G. Potts and Gray W. Lewis; her sister, Dorothy B. Whitaker of Washington and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by a daughter, Treva Lee Hunt; and four brothers, Monford F. Boyd, Marvin N. Boyd, W. Dempsey Boyd and Herman A. Boyd. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, October 7, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at the home of her daughter, Mary Lou Hunt Lewis, 211 Williamsburg Road, Tranters Creek Estates, Washington. Gail Rogers Hurlburt
Mrs. Gail Rogers Hurlburt, 72, of Aurora, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at home. A funeral will be conducted today at 11 a.m. in Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, with the Revs. Bud and Taffy Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Woodville Baptist Church cemetery in Bettie. Mrs. Hurlburt was the daughter of the late Milton and Virginia Rogers. She was married to Ivan C. Hurlburt, who survives. Survivors include one son, Ivan L. Hurlburt of Otway; two sisters, Myrna Burch and Lela Swanson, both of Scio, N.Y.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
