Henrietta Branton Lackland

Mrs. Henrietta Branton Lackland, age 83, a resident of 205 Ellison Drive, Washington, NC died Monday morning, July 9, 2007 at her home.  A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday July 12, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Kevin Johnson. Raymond Lawrence, Jerry Briley, James Phillips, Shawn Heath, Bill Mac Alligood and Grant Tew will serve as pallbearers.  Mrs. Lackland was born in Norfolk, VA on August 31, 1923. She was the daughter of Charles Fredrick Branton and Minnie Woolard Branton. She was a graduate of Washington High School. On July 5, 1947, she married Sam Boushall Lackland who preceded her in death on January 17, 2002. Mrs. Lackland was a homemaker and worked for several years in admissions at Beaufort County Hospital. She also worked with the Rationing Board during World War II. Mrs. Lackland was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.  She is survived by her daughter: Ann Lackland Taylor of Washington and her grandson: Aubrey B. Taylor, III of Raleigh. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her son-in-law: Aubrey B. “Sonny” Taylor, Jr. and her loving grandson: Brian Samuel Taylor.  The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at her home.  The family wishes to thank Mary Satterthwaite and Tina Raye her private caregivers, her associates with Ascera Hospice Care for their help and Mrs. Ivelene “Ike” Czuhai, her hospice volunteer.  Paul Funeral Home of Washington is serving the Lackland Family.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Tuesday, July 10, 2007)

Kathleen Adams LaCoanet

Kathleen Adams LaCoanet, 81, of the 3500 block of Terry Court, died March 6, 1992, in a hospital.  Mrs. LaCoanet was born in Beaufort County, N.C. She was a member of Tabernacle Church of Norfolk.  Survivors include her husband, Robert Lincoln LaCoanet; a son, Louis L. LaCoanet of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Edna Allen of Newport News and Olive Hatch of Raleigh; a brother, E.V. Adams of Henderson, N.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by Harry Smith. Johnetta Alexandria Lacy

Ms. Johnetta “Scooter” Alexanderia Lacy, 29, of 4748 Ariel Drive, Grimesland, died Friday, July 6, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church, Yeatesville, with Elder Sterling Tripp officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.  Ms. Lacy was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 14, 1977. She was the daughter of Glenda Collins Lacy and the late Johnny Lacy Sr. She was a 1995 graduate of Northside High School, Pinetown. She was employed in the health care field. She was affiliated with Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church, Yeatesville.  Survivors include one daughter, Joh-Briana A. Lacy of the home; two sisters, Glenda D. Peele of Chocowinity, and Keisha Reddick of Pantego; and one brother, Johnny Lacy Jr. of Washington.  Viewing will take place at Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church, Yeatesville, during the funeral service.  The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 1503 Seed Tick Neck Road, Pantego.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. June Helena Fowler Ermer Lancaster

Mrs. June Helena Fowler Ermer Lancaster, 60, of Chocowinity, N.C., retired registered nurse, died Aug. 20, 1993, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. Julie O’Neal Landen

Julie O'Neal Landen, 72, of the 1100 block of Jewell Ave., a retired nurse's aide, died Nov. 24, 1990, in a hospital.. Mrs. Landen, a native of Beaufort County, N.C., was the widow of David J. Landen. She had retired from Drum Creek Rest Home. Survivors include two daughters, Mollie L. Ketchum and Mary Broglin, both of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. T.M. Frye. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Verna Earl Lane

HAMPTON - Verna Earl Lane (Vernon), 81, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003. Born in Washington, North Carolina, he was a Hampton resident for more than 50 years.  He served in the United States Navy and retired in 1981 from Dominion Virginia Power's Natural Gas Division.  He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, a member of the Masonic order and a long time participant of the Khedive Temple Shrine Club and the Oriental Band, past member of the Hampton Elks Club and the local Antique Automobile Club of America.  Verna is survived by his wife, Ruth Alligood Lane; his daughter, Alana Holbrook of Yorktown; his son, Michael and his fiancee Terry Mawyer of Richmond; his grandchildren, Melissa and Steve Adair of Germantown, TN; Jason and Lea Holbrook of Yorktown; Mike and Tracey Lane and Matthew Lane of Richmond; his great-grandchildren, Lauren Holbrook of Yorktown; and Devin, Kiefer, Chandler and Aiden Lane of Richmond; sister, Bessie Mae Temple of Kinston, NC.  A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. at the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003. William Ray Lane

MANTEO - William Ray (Bill) Lane, 65, died Wednesday, Dec. 27 at his residence.  Born in Beaufort County, he was the son of the late Elbert L. and Melissa Hollowell Lane.  Mr. Lane was a retired automotive mechanic with the U.S. Park Service.  He is survived by three sisters: Clara Cayton of Wilmington, Lora Oliver of Manteo and Carol Deal of Wilson; two brothers: Richard Lane of Wilmington and George Lane of Chesapeake, Va.  A funeral service was scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. at Twiford's Colony Chapel with the Revs. Jim Davenport and Bruce Warrington officiating.  Burial is to take place in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens, Manteo.  Twiford's Colony Chapel. Peggy Harrington Langley

Ms. Peggy Harrington Langley, age 76, of 401 Hudnell St., Washington, died Friday, February 8, 2008 at the Beaufort Co. Hospital.  Graveside services will be 2:00 pm, Monday, February 11, 2008 at Oakdale Cemetery and will be conducted by Rev. Selby Smith.  Ms. Langley was born in Pitt Co. on October 25, 1932 to the late Joseph and Alice Campbell Harrington. She was a member of Love Baptist Church and retired from National Spinning Co. after 43 years of service.  Survivors include one sister, Gladys Harrington of Santa Monica, CA and several nieces and nephews.  Ms. Langley was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home, 401 Hudnell St. Washington. Rosevelt Langley

A service will be held Saturday for Rosevelt Langley, 71, of 10 Manville Road, who died Tuesday in Yale-New Haven Hospital of injuries suffered in an auto accident Aug. 21 on Derby Avenue in New Haven.  The service will be at 9 a.m. in Perkins Funeral Home, 308 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven.  Mr. Langley was born in Washington, N.C., July 17, 1917, son of the late George and Ella Hines Langley. He had lived many years in West Haven before moving to Woodbridge 22 years ago. He was an Amtrak clerk for many years before retiring about three years ago. He belonged to Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Woodbridge and formerly to Mount Hebron Baptist Church in Baltimore.  Besides his wife, Mattie Douglas Langley, he leaves three sons, Douglas Langley of Baltimore and Keith Roberts and William Van Houten, both of Woodbridge; two daughters, Cassandra Van Houten of Dallas, and Roxanne McCormick of Woodbridge; two brothers, Milton Langley of Baltimore and Thomas Lane of New Haven; three sisters, Queenie Leach of West Haven and Elizabeth Gill and Ruth Kelly, both of New Haven; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.  He was predeceased by two brothers, George Langley and Albert Langley, and a sister, Nannie White.  (New Haven Register (New Haven, CT) – September 16, 1988)


Wanda Hamilton Langley

Mrs. Wanda “K” Hamilton Langley, 46, of 602 W. Third St., Washington, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006.  A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Aurora, with pastor David Moore Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington.  Mrs. Langley was born in Beaufort County on May 31, 1960. She was the daughter of Sabra Midgette Hamilton and Herbert Gibbs Sr. She was a 1978 graduate of S.W. Snowden High School, Aurora. She did further studies at Livingstone College, Salisbury. Her employment was as a machine operator at Stanadyne Corp., Washington. On March 6, 1993, she married Michael Anthony Langley, who survives. She worked with the youth program in Aurora. She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Aurora, where she served as an usher and was founder of the church’s food bank.  Survivors include one stepdaughter, Keisha Langley of Greenville; five godchildren, Jaheem Carter, Unique Carter, Jeremy Jones, Tiswanna Hamilton and Tedric Hamilton; four sisters, Dianne Moore and Jennifer Cannon, both of Aurora, Carolyn Burt of Durham and Annie Lewis of Cash Corner; and 12 brothers, Roger Hamilton, Ira Hamilton, Winfred Hamilton and Dennis Hamilton, all of Aurora, Steve Hamilton of Rocky Mount, Lawrence Hamilton of Alabama, Samuel Mufaro and Ervin Gibbs, both of Raleigh, Larry Gibbs of Oriental, Levi Gibbs of Bellingham, Mass., Herbert Gibbs Jr. of Germany and Jerome Gibbs of Greenville.  The family will receive friends at the home, and also at the home of her mother, 3066 West Road, Aurora.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Daniel Lanier, Sr.

Daniel Lanier, Sr., 86, of Shelton Avenue died Saturday at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the widower of Beather Ormond Lanier. A resident of New Haven for 57 years, he was born in Bath, N.C., March 27, 1912, a son of the late Jesse John Lanier and Candes Thorne Lanier. Prior to retirement, he was employed for 25 years as a machine operator at Sargent and Co. and, most recently, as a host at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Enfield and Springfield, Mass. Mr. Lanier was a member of Pitts Chapel UFWB Church in New Haven, where he was a deacon, treasurer of the church and senior usher board, president of Choir 1, member of the trustee board and Sunday School and a participant in the Wednesday night prayer meetings. He is survived by sons, Jack O. Lanier of Richmond, Va., Daniel Lanier Jr. of Hockessin, Del., Thomas E. Lanier of Cleveland, Jesse M. Lanier Sr. of Suffield, Ronald L. Lanier of Stamford and Garrie W. Moore of Greenville, N.C.; daughters, Doris Dada of Lagos, Nigeria; Lillian D. Owens of Carson, Calif., and Barbara E. Lanier of Hamden; a brother, James Edward Lanier of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Elsie Lanier of Whitsett, N.C.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. John Stanley Lanier

John Stanley Lanier, a retired printer who made daily visits to Druid Hill Park for more than 30 years, died Friday at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air of a heart attack. He was 75 and had lived in Northwest Baltimore before moving to Edgewood in 1999.  A former printer and Linotype operator for The Boston Globe, The Sun and Baltimore Afro-American, he left the printing business nearly 40 years ago.  In the years after World War II, he studied journalism at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.  After he returned to Baltimore in the 1950s, he wrote editorials and was a part-time Linotype operator for the Baltimore Afro-American. He was a printer at Watkins Wells Printing Co. on North Fremont Avenue before taking a job in the composing room of the Sunpapers the 1950s.  "He was one of the first African-Americans in the International Typographical Union," said his daughter, Jacqueline Ruth Lanier of Baltimore. "He was an ardent union organizer and loyal member, but due to the overwhelming pressures of racism and segregation, he was forced to seek counseling for depression."  He was a patient at Perry Point Veterans Administration Hospital in Cecil County for several years. He then returned to Baltimore, where he joined the Baltimore Zoological Society and made visits to Druid Hill Park nearly every day from 1968 until 1999.  "He would leave the family house on Holmes Avenue and spend the whole day at the zoo," said his brother, Arthur Jerome Lanier, who lives in the Mondawmin neighborhood. "He had a great interest in minerals and rocks that were in the park's collection. He did sketches of birds from his memory of what he had seen that day."  Mr. Lanier was a lover of jazz who was a regular visitor to musical performances at the old Club Astoria on Edmondson Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue night spots.  Born in Bath, N.C., and raised in Baltimore, he was a graduate of Carver Vocational Technical High School, where he studied printing.  He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was assigned to several blimps, taking part in anti-submarine service in the Atlantic. He was an aviation engineer mechanic.  His wife of more than a half-century, the former Mary Elizabeth Porter, died last year.  Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Unity United Methodist Church, Edmondson Avenue and Stricker Street.  In addition to his daughter and brother, Mr. Lanier is survived by a son, John Stanley Lanier of Baltimore; another daughter, Deborah Lanier Morris of Baltimore; a sister, Mary Lanier Buster of Baltimore; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  (The Sun (Baltimore, MD) – October 4, 2001; pg. Tally Edward Lassiter

WASHINGTON - Dr. Tally Edward Lassiter, 68, of 108 Riverside Drive, Washington Park died at his home Saturday, March 16, 1996.  A private graveside service will be held at the family plot in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington for family and close friends at 1 p.m. Monday, followed by a public memorial service in the First Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. conducted by Dr. Jimmy Moore and the Rev. William J. Bradbury.  The family is receiving friends at the home.  Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. Frank Stallings, Dr. Dave Tayloe, Dr. Henry Stephenson, Jr., Jack Pyburn, Blount Rumley, Dr. William E. Kidd, Dr. Cornelius Partrick, Dr. John Gray Blount and Jesse Capel.  Dr. Lassiter was born in Troy, Sept. 27, 1927, the son of the late Jacob Colon Lassiter and Sarah Alice Smith Lassiter. He was married on Sept. 17, 1955 to the former Frances Elizabeth Hall who survives.  Dr. Lassiter was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950 and the Harvard Medical School in 1954. He had a general practice in Biscoe from 1956-1972 and in Washington from 1972-1989. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1948. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, was a member and former chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Health and had served on the Montgomery County Board of Health. He was a member of the N.C. Medical Society, the American Medical Association, former member of the Biscoe Town Board and former chairman of the Biscoe School Board. He also served on the board of the George H. and Laura E. Brown Library.  Surviving with his wife are sons, Dr. Tally E. Lassiter, Jr. of Greenville and Dr. Fred D. Lassiter of Richmond, Va.; daughters, Jane Lassiter Boahn of Chocowinity, Nancy Lassiter Rowe and Elizabeth Lassiter Thomas, both of Washington; eight grandchildren, Stacy Rowe Brooks, Charles Tally Boahn, William Raymond Boahn, Erin Elizabeth Boahn, Lauren Elizabeth Rowe, Lindsay Alice Rowe, Tally E. Lassiter, III, and India Leigh Lassiter; brothers, Jacob Colon Lassiter, Jr. of Lincolnton and Harry M . Lassiter of Mt. Burna Mae Reddick Latham

Mrs. Burna "Jute" Mae Reddick Latham, 63, of 26656 U.S. Highway 264 East, Pantego, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Weeping Mary Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Pantego, with Elder Donald Peartree officiating. Burial will follow at Broad Creek Cemetery, Pantego.  Mrs. Latham was born in Beaufort County on June 17, 1943. She was the daughter of Elsie Reddick and the late Earl Reddick. She graduated from Beaufort County High School in 1961. She was employed with Baker Seafood Co. She was a member of Antioch Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Pantego.  On April 15, 1966, she married Cleon Latham Sr., who survives.  Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Latham and Tonya Bahaj, both of Pantego; three sons, Cleon Latham Jr., Marvin Latham and Calvin Latham, all of Pantego; and two grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Lee Thomas Reddick.  The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Cheryl Latham, 7242 Terra Ceia Road, Pantego.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Cayton Allen Latham

Infant Cayton Allen Latham, 22 months, of 705 Carrow Road, Chocowinity, died Friday, May 26, 2006.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, May 29, 2006, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with pastor Kenneth Pritchard officiating. Burial will follow in the Gurkin family cemetery.  The family will receive friends from tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Service and other times at the home of his grandparents, Charles and Lisa Latham, 164 Langley Road, Chocowinity.  Cayton was born July 1, 2004, in Beaufort County. He was the son of Charles Daniel Latham and Sheena Gail Davis Latham.  In addition to his parents, Cayton is survived by an older sister, Genesis Marie Latham, and his twin sister, Calista Simone Latham, both of the home; maternal grandparents, James “Jimmy” A. Davis and Dawn Hardison Davis of Washington; paternal grandparents, Charles B. Latham Jr. and Lisa Alpar Latham of Chocowinity; maternal great-grandparents, Lillian S. Charles Latham

SUMMERVILLE - Services with military honors for Charles Fate Latham, 64, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with burial in Plantation Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Saturday at James A. Dyal Funeral Home.  Mr. Latham died Thursday. Born in Washington, N.C., he was a son of the late James Tillman Latham and Marcia Waters Latham.  Surviving: wife, Lena Dickey Latham of Summerville; son, J.H. Henry Vann Latham, III

GREENVILLE - Henry Vann "Val" Latham, III, 43, of Greenville, died Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.  Latham was born in Belhaven on April 26, 1952.  He was the son of Vann and Hester Rose Latham.  He was a student at Pitt Community College.  He was an outstanding athlete, participating in the Special Olympics for the past 21 years.  Latham was a member of the ARC of Pitt County, Trinity United Methodist Church and a former member of the Tar River Civitans.  Surviving with his parents are a sister, Cynthia Latham Wilson, and a brother-in-law, Steve Wilson, both of Greenville.  Funeral services were held Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Belhaven.  Entombment was in the Belhaven Community Cemetery Mausoleum.  Arrangements were by Paul Funeral Home, Washington.  (The Coastland Times (Manteo, NC) - Thursday, December 28, 1995; pg. 8A)


William A. Latham, Sr.

BURLINGTON - William A. “Sonny” Latham, Sr. passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2007 at his home following several years of failing health. He was born in Beaufort County, N.C. to the late Bryan and Flora Thomas Latham. He was the husband of Rebecca “Becky” Latham. Sonny served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War and later owned and operated Blackbeards Restaurant. He was of the Baptist faith and a former member of American Legion Post 63 and the Burlington Moose Lodge.  Survivors include his wife of the home, a daughter Libby Embler and her husband Dave of Burlington, a son William A. “Al” Latham, Jr. and his wife Colleen of Cassville, Mo., grandchildren, Jason Modlin, Christopher Modlin, Kathleen Latham, Sarah Latham, a great grandchild Cadence Latham, step grandchildren, Geri Embler, Rebekah Embler, Victoria Embler, brothers, Del Latham and his wife Kay of Burlington, C.B. Latham of Pinetown, N.C. and James R. Latham and his wife Margaret of Jacksonville, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.  There will be a memorial service 7 p.m. Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Fernie Caswell Laughinghouse

Mr. Fernie Caswell Laughinghouse, age 91, of 2734 Swindell Road, Pantego died Friday , March 16, 2007 at Pungo District Hospital.  Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the Pantego Christian Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Jim Bussell and Rev. Doug Stokes. Interment will be at the Belhaven Community Cemetery.  Mr. Laughinghouse was born December 14, 1915, to the late Rev. W. H. and Annie Tripp Laughinghouse of Pitt County. On September 21, 1947, he married Margarette Harris Swindell who survives. Mr. Laughinghouse served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a military policeman. He was a retired farmer and cattleman. He retired after 42 years of service on the board of supervisors of the Beaufort Soil & Water Conservation. He was a member of the Pantego Christian Church, past president of the Pantego Ruritan Club, past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club. He was also past president of the N.C. Soybean Producers Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Soybean Association, honorary lifetime member of the American Soybean Association and past president of the Carolinas-Virginia Grain and Feed Association. He was the recipient of the Governor’s Award from the North Carolina Agribusiness Council.  Survivors include his wife, Margarette Swindell Laughinghouse of the home; one son: Durwood S. Laughinghouse and his wife, Connie of Raleigh; one daughter: Dianne L. Bowen and her husband, Neil of Pantego; three granddaughters: Emily L. Brazik and her husband, David of Castle Hayne, Laura L. Garland and her husband, Brandon of Raleigh and Kathryn Margarette Bowen of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by sixteen brothers and sisters.  Pallbearers will be Britt Laughinghouse, Norman E. Richard Edward Lawrence

Richard Edward Lawrence, 68, of the 1700 block of Bainbridge Blvd., died May 6, 1994, in a Chesapeake hospital.  Mr. Lawrence was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was a retired employee of Norfolk Dredging Company. He was a member of Chesapeake Church of God and the J. Robert Graham Chapter #26, Disabled American Veterans.  Survivors include his wife, Frances L. Lawrence; four daughters, Pamela Deel, Teresa Holland, Sharon Clark, all of Chesapeake, and Norma Gillikin of Virginia Beach; two sons, Richard Thomas Lawrence and Tony Edward Lawrence, both of Chesapeake; two sisters, Bernice Gillikin of Otway, N.C. and Lula Gillikin of Seaford, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. William Lawrence, Jr.

Mr. William Lawrence Jr. of 235 Forrest Height Road, Washington, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at home.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mary’s Chapel with Bishop Carlton Keys officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Lawrence was born in Beaufort County on Feb. 8, 1944. He was the son of the late William Lawrence Sr. and Lucy Lucas Lawrence. He attended P.S. Jones High School. He was married to Matricia Kinlaw Lawrence, who survives.  Survivors include four daughters, Marva L. Hill, Tracy Whitney and Shenika Kinlaw, all of Washington, and Deborah L. Clark of Jacksonville; two sons, Rodney Kinlaw and Travis Kinlaw, both of Washington; three sisters, Marie L. Harry Lee Leathers

Mr. Harry Lee Leathers, 66, of 996 Pamlico St., Belhaven, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven.  A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Beaufort County High School alumni building, Pantego, with Elder Fred Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Broad Creek Cemetery, Pantego.  Mr. Leathers was born in Beaufort County on May 4, 1940. He was the son of the late Martha M. Leathers and Ell Conner. He attended the Beaufort County schools. On June 17, 1963, he was married to Josephine Ward Leathers, who survives. He retired from the Grand Basket Company, New York. He was a member of the Beaufort County Alumni Association. During his youth, he was affiliated with Zion Temple Free Will Baptist Church, Pantego.  Survivors include three daughters, Valerie Leathers Morgan of Raleigh, Daphne L. Slade of Pinetown and Amanda Leathers Keyes of Belhaven; two sons, Darryl E. Leathers of Greenville and Derrick Leathers of Belhaven; one sister, Audrie Gibbs of Pinetown; one brother, James Arthur Leathers of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eddie Leathers, Willie Allens and Frank Allens.  The family will receive friends today from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the chapel of Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Mildred Green Ledford, 76, of the 1300 block of Sandstone Court, died Nov. 6, 1992, in a Norfolk hospital.  Mrs. Ledford was born in Washington, N.C. Curtis Leon Lee, Sr.

Mr. Curtis Leon Lee Sr., 70, of 613 W. 11th St., Washington, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at his home.  A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Washington with the Rev. William F. Whitehead officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Lee was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Pitt County. He was the son of the late Mary Credle Lee and William Henry Lee. He graduated from the P.S. Jones High School in Washington. He did further studies at Beaufort County Community College in police science and earned certification in auto mechanics. Mr. Lee was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy. David Clifton Lee, Jr.

David Clifton Lee, Jr., age 76, a resident of 900 East Main St., Washington, died at his home Tuesday afternoon July 22, 2003. Funeral services will be held in the Paul Funeral Home Chapel in Washington Friday at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Pastor Leroy Cutler. Burial will be in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Mr. Lee was born in the Wilkinson Station Community of Pantego on April 21, 1927 the son of the late David C. Lee, Sr. and Alice Jennette Lee. He was married to the former Betty Cutler on June 3, 1949 who survives. Mr. Lee was a graduate of the Pantego High School and attended Mars Hill College. He was the founder and owner of Lee Chevrolet, Inc. in Washington. He had been active in the automobile business in Beaufort County for over 50 years. He was formerly active in Ruritan and Rotary. Mr. Lee served on the Beaufort County Board of Education for a number of years. Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, Betty of the home, five children, Steve Lee and his wife, Jean of Washington, Debra Lee Perry and her husband, Eddie of the Woodard's Pond Community, David H. Lloyd Haywood Lee

Lloyd Haywood Lee, 62, of Washington, died Tuesday morning, April 15, while attending a business meeting in Raleigh.  Lee was born Sept. 2, 1934 in Pender County, the son of the late Lonzie Haywood Lee and Gertrude Costin Lee.  He was a graduate of East Carolina University and a veteran of the U.S. Army.  Lee was employed with the Electric Membership Corp. for 40 years.  He worked in several North Carolina locations during his tenure in various capacities, including Red Springs-Lumber River E.M.C., Burgaw-Four County E.M.C., Carteret-Craven E.M.C., Morehead City.  At the time of his death, he was the general manager of Tideland E.M.C. in Pantego.  Survivors include his wife, Lina Sanford Lee of the home; a son, Lloyd "Nolan" Lee of Bath; a daughter, Marcia Lynne McConeghy; a grandchild, Nolan Alexander Lee; a sister, Marie Wood of Angier; and a brother, Clifton Lee of Ivanhoe.  Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington.  Burial followed at Oakdale Cemetery.  (The Coastland Times (Manteo, NC) - Tuesday, April 22, 1997; pg. 5A)


Mary Mayo Lee

Mary Mayo Lee, 84, of the 400 block of Providence Road, died Aug. 21, 2000, at a local hospital.  Born in Aurora, N.C., she was a graduate of Aurora High School and a retired beautician. She was a member of Parkway Temple.  Survivors include a daughter, Jerry Lee Canada of Leesburg, Va.; two brothers, the Rev. William L. Mayo of Virginia Beach and the Rev. Julian F. Mary T. ''Mae'' Lee, 86, of the 2500 block of Salem Road, died Feb. 2, 1997, in Bayside Health Care Center.  Mrs. Lee was born in Bath, N.C., and was the widow of Milton A. Lee. She was a homemaker and member of Salem United Methodist Church.  Survivors include two daughters, Esther L. Etheridge and Mary Anne Murphy and husband, Winfred L., all of Virginia Beach; a son, Nelson T. Lee and wife, April, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Martilea O'Neal of Bath; two brothers, Norfleet Tyer of Florida and James E. Tyer of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie T. Tyer and Thaddeus N. Nellie Woolard Lee

Mrs. Nellie Woolard Lee, 88, of 9293 N.C. Highway 32 North, Washington, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at home.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lee Cemetery, N.C. Highway 32, Washington, with Tony Krantz officiating. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.  Mrs. Lee was born in Beaufort County on March 10, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Gray Woolard and Sallie Jane Singleton Woolard. She was married to Elijah Mansfield Lee, who preceded her in death. She was a retired clothing clerk with Buckman’s and Belk’s. She was a member of Beaver Dam Church of Christ.  Survivors include two sons, Phillip M. Noah Thomas Lee

Mr. Noah Thomas Lee, age 75, a former resident of Goose Creek Road, died Monday, December 31, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington.  Graveside services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the Piney Grove Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Tony Krantz.  The following will serve as pallbearers: Wayne Cox, Donald Cutler, Horace “Pete” Lee, Jr., James Woolard, Eddie Cherry and William Woolard. Bruce T. Leggett

HAMPTON - Bruce T. Leggett, 79, was called home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 3, 1998. He was born in Washington, N.C., where he spent his early years. He retired as a supervisor in the Paint Department from the Newport News Shipyard in 1979 after 38 years of service.  He was a member of the Bremond #241 A.F.&A.M. Masonic Lodge, Newport News, Khedive Temple of the Shrine, AAONMS, Chesapeake, and past deacon and member of Wythe Presbyterian Church, Hampton.  He will be deeply missed by those who loved him. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed being with his family. He is survived by his wife, Estelle M. Leggett; two daughters, Pat Leggett Rapp, and husband, Bob, of Tabb, and Carolyn H. Packer, and husband, George R., of Hampton; five grandchildren, Michele P. Smith, and husband, Frank, of Chesapeake, Bobby Bruce Rapp, and wife, Ronda, of Grafton, Melanie L. Rapp of Tabb, Keith Packer of Hampton and Kim P. Wesleyan College in business management. She was employed with North Carolina State University in accounting. On November 20, 1987, she married Virgil Wilson Leggett, who survives.  In addition to her husband, Virgil, of the home, and her parents, Harold and Carolyn of Chocowinity, she is survived by her two children: Autumn Joy Leggett and Joshua Hunter Leggett, both of the home; her brother: Harold Bright, Jr. of New Bern; her paternal grandmother: Bernice Bright of Chocowinity; and her three uncles: Archie Bright and his wife, Judy of Carolina Beach; Kenneth and his wife, Theresa and Bobby R. Catherine Roberson Leggett

Mrs. Mildred Boyd Leggett, 88, of 6528 North Boyd Road, Pinetown, died Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Britthaven of Washington.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Mobley officiating.  Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens with Octavus “Toby” Wallace, Octavus Wallace, Ted Wallace, Alton Wallace, Ray Collier and Kenneth Willoughby serving as pallbearers.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at Mrs. Leggett’s home.  A lifelong resident of the Pinetown Community, Mrs. Leggett was born March 24, 1917 in Beaufort County.  She was the daughter of the late Samuel Farrow Boyd and Mary Virginia Osborne Boyd.  On January 20, 1940 she married Jay Truman Leggett, who preceded her in death on November 2, 1995.  She was a homemaker and loving mother.  She was a graduate of Bath High School. Johnnie Wesley Leggette

HAMPTON - Johnnie Wesley Leggette, 78, died Monday, May 18, 1998. Born in Washington, N.C., he had been a Hampton resident for 60 years.  Mr. Leggette was a six-time decorated Navy veteran of World War II. He retired in 1982 as a supervisor from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 33 years and was a member of the Hampton Medical Center Voluntary Service Program.  Mr. Leggette is survived by his wife, Catherine Nash Leggette; his daughter, Cheryl Page Manning of Newport News; his stepdaughters, Juanita G. Ellis of Williamsburg and Renee G. Weck of California; his sons, Johnnie W. Leggette Jr. of Richmond, Dennis Kendall Leggette of Seaford and Robert Craig Leggette of Hampton; his brother, Jack Leggette of Newport News; his sisters, Mae Robertson of Greenville, N.C., Mildred Griffin of Washington, N.C., Dorothy Griffin and Mary Ella Daniels, both of Williamston, N.C., and Becky Brown of Enfield, N.C.; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at R. Mrs. Claudia H. Edwin Lejman

Mr. Edwin “Ed” Lejman, age 84, a resident of 105 Pinecrest Court, Washington died Monday morning February 25, 2008 at his home.  A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday February 28, 2008 at the Mother of Mercy Catholic Church officiated by Father Arturo Cabra. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.  Mr. Lejman was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 23, 1923, son of the late Boleslaw and Stella Kurowski Lejman. On May 6, 1950, he married the former Mary R. Slugay, who survives. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Lejman was employed with IBM as an engineer. He retired in 1983 with 35 years service. He was a member of the Mother of Mercy Catholic Church and M.O.M.P.O.P.S.  In addition to his wife, Mary, of the home, he is survived, by his children: Barbara L. Shutak and her husband, Michael of Morehead City, N.C.; Patricia A. Lejman and Pamela A. Lejman both of Wake Forest, N.C.; Ann M. Grubbs and her husband, Chris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his grandson: Michael A. Anna B. Lemma, 63, a homemaker, died Aug. 31, 1993, in a local hospital.  Mrs. Lemma was born in Washington, N.C., and was the widow of Capt. Paul A. Lemma Sr., U.S. Navy (Ret.) She was a member of Church of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Virginia Beach Garden Club; Women's Republican Club of Virginia Beach; and was an avid gardener.  Survivors include two sons, Paul A. Lemma, Jr. and Joseph C. Lemma, both of Virginia Beach; and four sisters, Meredith Mitchell of Spartanburg, S.C., Mrytice Melnyck of Ludlow, Mass., Lois Southworth of Nashua, N.H., and Sylvia Gyle Bogert of Virginia Beach.  A Mass will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Church of the Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Richard Mooney. Mrs. Betty Warren Lewis, age 87, a lifelong resident of Blounts Creek N.C. died Saturday April 29, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C.  A funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday May 1, 2006 at Ephesus Free Will Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. She married Herbert Sanford Lewis on October 22, 1940 who preceded her in death on November 27, 1994. She was a homemaker and worked in many aspects of the family farm. Mr. Charlie “Dale” Lewis, age 71, a resident of the Campbell’s Creek community, Aurora, died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.  Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2007 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Pastor Claude Nethercutt. Clyde Edgbert Lewis

Mr. Clyde Edgbert Lewis, 84, formerly of 1404 Harrington St., Washington, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Britthaven Nursing Center of Washington.  A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ecklin family cemetery in Blounts Creek with the Rev. Linda Rowe and the Rev. George Daniels.  Pallbearers will be Daniel Lewis, Allen Lewis, Earl Rascoe, Edward Roscoe, Jimmie Lewis and Shane Lewis.  Mr. Lewis was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 13, 1921. He was the son of the late Raymond Allen Lewis Sr. and the late Lula Mae Gurkin Lewis. He was a loving husband to the former Lona Belle Rascoe who he married on Nov. 22, 1952. Mr. Lewis served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a retired security guard with National Spinning. He was a member of the Washington American Legion Post and, most importantly, he was a Christian. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Lewis and his wife, Lisa, of Atlanta, Ga., who he was a proud father to. Mr. Lewis was a big brother to one sister, Hilda L. Hollowell of Winterville; three brothers, Osborne Lewis of Washington, Johnnie Lewis of Chocowinity and Raymond Allen Lewis Jr., who preceded Mr. Lewis in death on Jan. 13, 2006. Mrs. Lewis was a retired cafeteria manager with Aurora High School, having worked there from 1964 to 1975. She was a lifelong resident of Beaufort County and a member of Campbell Creek United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Lewis is survived by a daughter, Darnell Peed and her husband Floyd of Aurora; their children, Scott Peed and his wife Kim; their children, Kristin and Kara; Jeffrey and his wife Barbara and their children, Abigail, Rebekah and Carson; a daughter, Donna Swartz and her husband Tom; their children Stacy Rhodes and her husband Tony and Michael Swartz and his friend Amy Taylor, all of Orlando, Florida. Irene Perrow Cowling Lewis, 94, of Route 2, died April 28, 1990, in a Washington, N.C., hospital.  Mrs. Lewis, a native of Bluefield, W.Va., was a member of Cradock United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and Victory Chapter 16 Order of the Eastern Star in Chesapeake. Joseph Edward Lewis, Jr.

Mr. Joseph Edward “Joe” Lewis, Jr., age 70, a resident of 300 Tolers Ave., Blounts Creek, NC died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at the Beaufort County Hospital in Washington, NC.  A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2007 at the Smyrna Original Free Will Baptist Church in Blounts Creek officiated by Pastor Joel Cannon. Burial will follow in the Toler Family Cemetery in Blounts Creek.  Mr. Joe was born in Beaufort County on April 25, 1936 son of the late Joseph Edward Lewis, Sr. and the late Mollie Willis Lewis. He was a 1955 graduate of Aurora High School. Mr. Joe married the former Sylvia Angeline Toler on August 22, 1958, who survives. He was a foreman with the former Texas Gulf and retired in 1997. Ledrew Lewis, 79, 4502 Southmore Drive, Orlando, died Friday.  Born in Chocowinity, N.C., he moved to Orlando from Fort Benning, Ga., in 1959. He was a retired Army master sergeant. He was a member of the McCoy Chapel Military Annex, the American Legion and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Mrs. Lavone Paul Lewis, 78, of Morehead City, died Friday, September 7, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bath, N.C., to the late Joe and Lucy Paul. William Franklin Lewis

Mr. William Franklin “Bill” Lewis, 82, of Wellesley Road, Washington, NC died Sunday, December 2, 2007 at his home.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Hillside Funeral Service and other times at the home.  A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.  Mr. Lewis was born August 31, 1925 in Beaufort County.  He was the son of the late George D. Lewis, Sr. and Rena Bell Jones Lewis.  On September 18, 1949, he married Dorothy Marie Hunter.  He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in WWII.  Mr. Lewis was a retired carpenter in the Engineering Department at the DuPont Corporation, Deepwater, NJ.  He was a member of Emmanuel FWB Church.  He was a member and past Master of Mantua Masonic Lodge #95 F. & A.M. of NJ, the Scottish Rite Consistory of NJ, past President of the 21st Masonic District of NJ and member of Mantua Temple Association of NJ, past President of Mantua Temple Association 95 F. & A.M., a member of the Cresent Temple Shrine in Burlington, NJ and a member of Dupont Gold Card Retirees.  Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hunter Lewis of Washington, NC; one sister, Alice Mae L. PORTSMOUTH - Beryl Edna Lex, 85, of the 400 block of Douglas Ave., died Aug. 2, 1996.  She was a native of Chocowinity, N.C., and the widow of John W. Lex. She retired as a supervisor from Colonial Stores and was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church.  Survivors include a son, James F. Windley of Portsmouth; a sister, Lenay Woolard of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Lenol Moore of Chocowinity; and a granddaughter, Julia R. Arthur Paul Liggio

Mr. Arthur Paul Liggio of the Cypress Landing community, Chocowinity, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at home.  A funeral will be conducted Friday in Bayside, N.Y.  Mr. Liggio was born in New York, N.Y., on Dec. 30, 1926. He was the son of the late Stephen and Tillie Still Liggio. He served in the Navy during World War II. On Dec. 19, 1971, he married the former Eleanor Anne Rabstejnek, who preceded him in death April 16, 2005. HOLLY HILL - Dewey E. Lilley, 61, of Walker Street, a former printer, died Thursday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.  Mr. Lilley, a veteran of the Marine Corps, was born in Washington, N.C., and moved to this area in 2004 from Flagler County. He was a current historian for the American Legion Post 120, Holly Hill. He enjoyed sculpture, art, cooking, guitar, karaoke, fishing and traveling. Survivors include his companion of 38 years, Darrell Cawley, Holly Hill; his mother, Myrtle Blount, Yorktown, Va.; and four brothers, Teddy and Steve, both of Newport News, Va., Ben, Yorktown, and Stanley, Chesapeake, Va. George Horace Lilley, 75, of the 2600 block of Hemple St., died Sept. 11, 1993, in a Chesapeake hospital.  Mr. Lilley was born in Beaufort County, N.C. He was a member of Grace Baptist Temple. He had retired with 32 years service as an aircraft mechanic at Naval Air Station and and as owner for 22 years of No Sweat Launderette.  Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gray Lilley; two daughters, Constance Joanne Adcock and Georgie Yvonne Williams, both of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.  The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Grace Baptist Temple by the Rev. Lillian Rachel Lilley

Mrs. Lillian Rachel Lilley, 90, formerly of Pinetown, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Hancock County Hospital in Sneedville, Tenn.  A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Pamlico Memorial Gardens with Fred Wilson and the Rev. Gene Gilbert officiating. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.  Mrs. Lilley was born in Beaufort County on May 2, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Nellie Wallace Bierman. She was married to Wade Hampton Lilley, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Five Points Free Will Baptist Church.  Survivors include two daughters, Emily L. Barney Florey Lincoln

Barney Florey Lincoln, 75, of the 2900 block of E. Malden Ave., died March 5, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.  Mr. Lincoln was born in Washington, N.C. and was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. He was a retired firefighter for the Norfolk Fire Dept. after 26 years and was also retired from the Little Creek Exchange. He was an Army veteran of World War II.  Survivors include his wife, Martha B. Lincoln; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sliger of Kingsport, Tenn.; three sons, Barney Luther Lincoln of Newport News, William Jerry Lincoln of Norfolk, and Edward Thomas Lincoln of Chesapeake; one sister, Naomi L. Kigerl of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.  The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Margaret Elizabeth Little Lindler

Margaret Elizabeth Little Lindler, beloved mother and homemaker, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones, at 10:30 am Wednesday, February 9th, 2005. She was born and raised in Washington, North Carolina. She spent much of her life in service to this country, both as a civil servant in naval communications during World War II and as the wife of a career naval aviator. Mrs. Lindler also enjoyed a career as a hotel owner. Her many interests included international travel and plant propagation. She was an avid bridge player and generous volunteer for many charities. Mrs. Lindler was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, South Carolina, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. She is survived by daughters, Jamie L. Lindler of New Orleans and Margaret L. Kinda of Santa Cruz, California, as well as grandson Aaron M. Nelma Elwood Linton

Nelma Elwood Linton, age 84, passed from her earthly life to her eternal reward on July 10, 2006, at 7 p.m., at Mount Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Nelma Linton was born May 19, 1922, the third of four children, and the daughter of Lena Norfleet Linton and Jerome Taylor Linton, who resided in the Sidney and Belhaven, North Carolina, communities. She was educated in the Beaufort County schools, graduating from Pantego High School. She was employed for a number of years at the Roses Store in Belhaven. She later graduated from Pitt Community College School of Nursing, and the Atlanta College of Medical Assisting in 1974. She was employed in the nursing field in North Carolina and Virginia most of her adult life.  Nelma Linton was a devoted member of Sidney Free Will Baptist Church, serving in many church offices. During her long residence in Sidney, she celebrated the births, marriages, and passage from this life of many in her community. She decorated the church for important events and sang for many years in the choir, her strong alto voice inspiring and cheering friends and family. Nelma Linton was a member of Belhaven Chapter No. 234 Order of the Eastern Star since 1971, serving as Worthy Matron from 1980 to 1981. This was a great honor for her and one of the highlights of her community life. Ms. Linton is survived by one sister, Mildred Linton Privott, of Chesapeake, Virginia, two nieces, Mary Virginia Maruca of Arlington, Virginia, and Margaret Ann Maruca Rilling (with husband John Rilling) of Mt. Airy, Maryland, two nephews — Walter W. Privott (with wife Kathy Privott) of Ocean View, Virginia, and Irvin R. Privott (with wife Victoria Privott) of Chesapeake, Virginia, as well as a great nephew, Matthew H. Grant of Arlington, Virginia. Several other great nephews and nieces also reside in Virginia and Florida. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Linton Maruca of Oxon Hill, Maryland (June 1979), and Nellie D. Leitch of Orlanda, Florida (January 1993). One brother, Eugene S. Linton of Belhaven, North Carolina, died on January 19, 1986. A devoted sister-in-law, Glayde Clark Linton, Belhaven, NC died January 18, 1992.  Nelma Linton was loved by all, and will be greatly missed by those she generously and unselfishly helped throughout her life. Always a cheerful giver, she supported many church organizations with her tithes and prayers. Her courage in the face of adversity, and her faith and determination with which she faced life’s challenges were a strong example for many.  Funeral Services will be conducted by Rev. Charlie Clark and Rev. David Pooser at Sidney Free Will Baptist Church, Belhaven. Visitation and viewing will be held at the church Friday, July 14 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. with funeral service at 11 a.m. and internment in the church cemetery. Blanche McGowan Tetterton Little

Blanche McGowan Tetterton Little, age 83, a resident of 227 Waterford Place, Washington, passed away with grace and dignity on Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Blanche was a retired Registered Nurse of 40 years. Crawford Pearson Little, Jr.

Mr. Crawford Pearson Little, Jr., age 81, a resident of 748 West Main Street, Washington, NC died Sunday January 21, 2007 at the Beaufort County Hospital.  A graveside funeral will be held 3:30 PM Monday January 22, 2007 at Zion Episcopal Church Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Charles Kettlewell.  Mr. Little was born in Beaufort County on April 30, 1925 son of the late Crawford P. Little, Sr. and the late Margaret Harvey Little. He was a 1943 graduate of Washington High School. Mr. Little served his country in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater from December 1943 through May 1946. He also served at Key West, FL during the Korean War from April 1951 through August 1952. Mr. Little retired from Cotter & Company of Chicago, IL, a parent company of True Value Hardware, in May of 1992. He was a Volunteer Fireman with Washington Fire Department for 20 years, a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church of Washington where he served as Sunday School Teacher, Acolyte, Vestryman and Treasurer.  Mr. Little is survived by two sisters: Lucy Little of Winter Park, FL and Helen Little Parrish of Durham; two nephews Ashley Alligood of Wilson and Crawford Parrish of Tulahoma TN; three great nephews and one great niece. NEWPORT NEWS - Joseph Luther Little, 59, died Wednesday, April 3, in Newport News Shipbuilding Clinic.  Mr. Little was employed as a construction sketcher in the sheet metal department of Newport News Shipbuilding.  A Peninsula resident for 50 years, he was a native of Beaufort County, N.C. Mr. Little attended Parkview Church of God.  Survivors include his wife, Glenna S. Little; a daughter, Linda L. Carmine of Newport News; his father, Norman B. Little Sr. of Chocowinity, N.C.; three sisters, Shirley Formichelli and Rosa Woodall of Newport News and Doris Baluis of Chocowinity; and a brother, Norman B. Little Jr. of Hampton.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Peninsula Funeral Home.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home by the Rev. Marvin Everett Little

Mr. Marvin Everett Little, age 91, a former resident of Greenville, N.C., died Friday, September 28, 2007 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Va.  Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, N.C., conducted by Rev. Jeff Manning, pastor of Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Greenville, N.C.  The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday, October 1, at Paul Funeral Home, Washington, N.C.  Mr. Little was born in Pitt County, North Carolina, on June 28, 1916. He was the son of the late Thomas Luther Little and Rosa Bell Johnston Little. He married Mildred M. Mizelle on August 24, 1941. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before her death in March of this year.  He and his wife moved to Newport News, Virginia in the early 1940s, where he worked as a crane operator in the shipyard until his retirement in the 1980s. Mr. Little enjoyed people and could always make you smile.  Church was a vital part of his life and he was a willing servant. He loved entertaining missionaries and pastors. Traveling the U.S. was a sightseeing adventure and he loved to visit family and attend Free Will Baptist National Conventions. His yard was filled with flowers and a fresh bouquet always made its way to the vase on the kitchen table. His vegetable garden fed family, neighbors and rabbits.  Survivors include two daughters, Bernadene Little Kemble of Tallahassee, Fla., and Phyllis Little Bass of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Mary L. Mildred Mizelle Little

Mrs. Mildred Mizelle Little, age 88, a former resident of Greenville, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA.  Graveside services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, conducted by Pastor Jeff Manning.  Mrs. Little was born in Martin County on January 9, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Jessie Edmund Mizelle and Della Cratt Mizelle. Mrs. Little was a member of Unity Free Will Baptist Church. Mildred enjoyed her family and her Church. She loved to cook for her family and friends especially missionaries and pastors. Mildred enjoyed traveling especially to attend the annual Free Will Baptist National Conventions. She sang alto in her church choir for many years. Mildred taught V.B.S. and Good News clubs for Child Evangelism. She enjoyed her retirement years in Greenville.  On August 24, 1941, she was married Marvin E. Little, who survives.  Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Marvin E. Little currently of Tallahassee, FL; two daughters, Bernadene Little Kemble of Tallahassee, FL, Phyllis Little Bass of Virginia Beach, VA; three sisters, Isabel M. Thompson of Newport News, VA, Faye M. Corey of Washington, Zylphia M. Bondeson of Goldsboro; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Little was preceded in death by four brothers, Jessie I. Mizelle, E.D. Mizelle, Ralph B. Mizelle, Glysal D. Mizelle; and one sister, Rachel M. Norman B. Little, Sr.

Norman B. Little, Sr., 91, went home to be with his Lord, Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, in Newport News, Va.  A native of Beaufort County, N.C., he had been a Peninsula resident for many years. Mr. Little retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a crane operator after 37 years of service. He was a member of 15th Street Church of God, Washington, N.C.  Norman was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His devotion to his family should be a role model to all. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Little; his son, Joseph L. She was employed as a domestic technician in private homes and was also a craft and home designer. She was a former member of Morning Star Disciples of Christ Church, Old Field community, Pantego. She later became a member of Full Gospel Temple Church of Christ, Pantego, where she served as a missionary, fund raiser for foreign missions and domestic technician.  Survivors include three daughters, Mary Louise D. Mildred Alberta Lovick

Mildred Alberta Lovick of the 1000 block of Hannah St., died Nov. 25, 1993, in her residence.  She born in Belhaven, N.C., and was the widow of Robert F. Lovick. She was a member of Bethlehem Christ Disciples.  Survivors include her mother, Beulah J. Moore of Norfolk; a cousin, Curtis Spencer of Virginia Beach; and a host of other relatives and friends.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Bethlehem Christ Disciples by Bishop J. Edwards. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the residence. Mae Doris Lovinggood

Mrs. Mae “Doris” Lovinggood, 84, formerly of 4603 VOA Road, Washington and most recently a resident of Britthaven of Washington, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington.  A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 24, 2007 in Mountain View Park Cemetery Marietta, Georgia.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at the home of her daughter, Marthalyn Hudson, 4603 VOA Road, Washington.  Mrs. Lovinggood was born November 13, 1923 in Cobb County, Georgia.  She was the daughter of the late William Howard Dobbs and Beulah Lee Lingerfelt Dobbs.  She was married to Louis Lovinggood, who preceded her in death.  Mrs. Lovinggood was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Washington. She had been a resident of Washington since 1978.  Survivors include two daughters, Marthalyn Hudson and her husband, Jimmy of Washington, NC and Myra Mathur and her husband, Nick of Cleveland, OH; two sons, Larry Dobbins of Rome, GA and Louis Lovinggood and his wife, Gloria of Powder Springs, GA; one sister, Johnnie Riley of McDonough, GA; three grandchildren, Tomenah Mills and her husband, Randy of Washington, NC, Cynthia Lyon and her husband, Christian of Knightdale, NC, and Erin Hodnett and her husband, Kurt of Greenville, NC; and one great-grandchild, Jamie Harrison and her husband, Jason of Washington, NC.  (Hillside Funeral Home obituary posted Wednesday, November 21, 2007)

April 3, 1920 – Oct. 12, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES - H. Snead Low, 84, of Oceans West Boulevard, a former executive secretary for the national YMCA, died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.  Mr. Low, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Washington, N.C., and moved here in 1982 from Silver Spring, Md. He enjoyed golf, travel and playing bridge.  Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Helen; a son, Earl, Summerville, S.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Cole, Burlington, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Garoldine D. Loyd

Garoldine D. Loyd of the 3500 block of Killam Ave. died Aug. 12, 2000, at a local hospital. Born in Belhaven, N.C., Mrs. Loyd was a retired home health aide and was a member of New Jerusalem COGIC.  She is survived by three daughters, Janice Lovitt and husband, Michael, Temetris Pete and Rebecca Loyd; two sons, William Loyd and Elder Thomas Loyd Sr. and wife, Jeanette; her mother, Rebecca Gibbs King; a sister, the Rev. H. Louise Boone; a brother, Henry L. King Jr.; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, David Loyd, Sr.; a son, David Loyd, Jr.; and her father, Henry King.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem COGIC, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Barnett K. Thoroughgood. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at 234 W. 34th St. Viewing will precede the funeral service. Sylvia Virginia Lucas

Mrs. Sylvia Virginia “Ginger” Hill Lucas, age 64, a former resident of the Haw Branch community, Chocowinity, died Monday, February 18, 2008 at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington.  A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at Haw Branch Church of Christ, conducted by D. J. Maxey.  Mrs. Lucas was born in Charleston, S.C. on June 7, 1943. She was the daughter of Mary Brown Hill and the late E.D. Hill. Mrs. Lucas was a retired lab technician with Washington Women’s Clinic. She was a member of the Haw Branch Church of Christ.  Mrs. Lucas was married to William “Kent” Lucas, who preceded her in death, January 17, 2003.  Mrs. Lucas is survived by two daughters, Kim Haselden and her husband, Ron and their children, Zack Squires and Emma Paige Haselden all of Bath, Paige Meyers and her son, Luke Meyers, both of Chocowinity; her mother, Mary Brown Hill of Chocowinity; a brother, Roger Hill and his wife, Liz both of Chocowinity; and a sister, Norma Tyndall and her husband, Carl both of Deep Run.  The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, February 19, 2008 at the home of her brother, Roger Hill, 2318 Haw Branch Road, Chocowinity.  Paul Funeral Home of Washington is serving the Lucas family.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) - Tuesday, February 19, 2008)


Thomas Lee Lucas

Thomas Lee Lucas, of the 2800 block of Kimball Terrace, a retired cook, died Jan. 17, 1992, in a Portsmouth hospital.  Mr. Lucas was born in Belhaven, N.C. He had retired from the Navy after 20 years. He was the widower of Rosetta V. Lucas and was a Baptist.  Survivors include two daughters, Angela Lucas-Morris and Elsie V. Williams, both of Norfolk; three sisters, Virginia Watts of Greenville, N.C., Luvond James of Norfolk and Geraldine Peterson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.  The funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Mount Carmel Baptist Church by the Rev. Pauline P. Lumsden

Pauline ''Polly'' Lumsden, 54, of 1305 Wellington Court, passed away on June 6, 2002 after a courageous battle against cancer.  She was born in Washington, N.C., and graduated from University of North Carolina at Greensboro then received her master's from Medical College of Virginia as a medical technologist.  She was heavily involved in professional activities in medical technology at the state, regional and national level.  She is survived by her husband, Curtis H. Lumsden and a son, Christopher H. Lumsden of Virginia Beach; her parents, Foster and Susan Perkins; and a sister, Susan Carr Way all of Beaufort, N.C.  A memorial service will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, 2020 Laskin Road, Saturday, at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to service time, from 2 to 3 p.m. No flowers accepted. Margaret Lee Lunsford

Ms. Margaret Lee Lunsford, 84, of 4428 Bonnerton Road, Edward, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at home.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Edward, with the Rev. Victor Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray family cemetery, Edward.  Ms. Lunsford was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 14, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Elijah Lunsford and Arnettia Moore Thompson. She attended the Beaufort County schools and graduated from Wadleigh High School, Manhattan, N.Y. She did further studies at Staten Island Community College and earned certification in child development. In 1982 she retired as a training captain, medication and treatment staff person, ward charge and building supervisor with the Staten Island Development Center with the state of New York. While in New York, she was a member and Worthy Matron of Saint Acelia Chapter No. 47 Order of the Eastern Star. In the Edward community, she was affiliated with the American Legion Auxiliary and the Golden Age Seniors. In New York, she was a member of Canaan Baptist Church, where she served on the youth and adult usher boards, as Sunday school teacher, on the board of Christian education, Leader’s Council and superintendent of Sunday schools. In North Carolina, she was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Edward, where she worked with the Harvest Day service and Youth Day service. She also served as Church Mother, deaconess and president of the Missionary Circle.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Moore.  The family will receive friends at the home.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Doris Ambrose Lupton

BELHAVEN - Mrs. Doris Ambrose Lupton, age 73, of Belhaven, the wife of Floyd Jackson Lupton, former administrative assistant to the late First District Congressman Walter B. Jones, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville on Monday, July 24.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church in Belhaven, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Davis and the Rev. Robert Cayton.  Burial will be in Belhaven Community Cemetery.  Mrs. Lupton was born in Belhaven on August 26, 1922, the daughter of the late James Warren and Beatrice Bishop Ambrose.  She was a graduate of the Belhaven High School and attended East Carolina University.  Mrs. Lupton was active in all church and charitable endeavors in the community.  She was a life-long member of the First Christian Church and was active in all related activities, Women's Work, Sunday School department, and in the music department where she served as the church organist for over 40 years.  She was the founder of First Salvation Army Kettle House in Belhaven and was active in the Belhaven Senior Citizens Club and the line dance group.  Mrs. Lupton was long active in Beaufort County Democratic Women, the Eastern Start, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.  Surviving with her husband is a son, Floyd J. Lupton, Jr. of Havelock; daughters Sharon Lupton Jones of Williamsburg, Va. and Bea Lupton Dillon of Belhaven; three grandchildren: Stephen D. Jones of Raleigh, Neil T. Jones of Greenville and Jake A. Ethel Lilly Coward Lupton

Mrs. Ethel Lilly Coward Lupton, age 95, a former resident of 407 East 12th Street, Washington, N.C. died Friday July 20, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington.  A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery of Washington officiated by Eddie Bowen. Ray David Moore, Carter Leary, Zane Osnoe, Robert Andrews, Danny Johnson and Nick Saleeby will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Bojangles Tea Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Mrs. Lupton was born in Robeson County on March 18, 1912 daughter of the late Heber Coward and the late Lilly Grey Chandler Coward. She married Garland Edward Lupton of Pamlico County on December 27, 1929 who preceded her in death on October 25, 1977. Mrs. Lupton was a retired clerk with the former McClellan’s Department Store of Washington. She was a former member of Captain Branch Christian Church and Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  Survivors include a son: James Linwood Lupton and his wife Colleen of Washington; a sister: Helen Coward Gaskins Bland of Grifton; two grandchildren: James Linwood Lupton, II of Roanoke Rapids and David Garland Lupton of Washington and two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Sadie Blount Lupton, 105, of Temple Terrace, died Monday (March 23, 1998) at Palm Garden Nursing Home. Born in Washington, N.C., she came here in 1988 from Vandemere, N.C. She was a homemaker and a member of United Methodist Church of Temple Terrace. Survivors include a son, Ralph Jay Jr., Temple Terrace; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Mary Elizabeth Tripp Lyles

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Tripp Lyles, 84, of 511 Abbott Road, Henderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Granville Medical Center, Oxford.  A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of J.M. White Funeral Home, Henderson, with the Revs. Robert Kelley and Frank Sossamon officiating. Graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, with the Rev. Sylvia Kohus officiating.  Mrs. Lyles was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 28, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Styron and Edwin Reade Tripp. She was a Navy veteran, serving as a WAVE during World War II. She was married to Nathaniel T. “Tinker” Lyles, who preceded her in death. She was a cashier at Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre and was a former bookkeeper at the former Crowell Chevrolet Co. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Washington.  Survivors include one daughter, Beth Lyles of Henderson and one son, Steve Lyles of Kittrell.  The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at J.M.
