John Sumter MacRae, Jr.
Mr. John Sumter MacRae Jr., 89, of 201 Greensboro Road died May 11, 1995, at the Presbyterian Home in High Point. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Home Chapel with a graveside service at a later date in the family cemetery at Airlie, N.C. Born in Washington, N.C., Mr. MacRae spent his early years in Maxton, N.C. and graduated from McCallie School in Tennessee. He then received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Davidson College. He worked for the American Tobacco Company in Turkey for several years. He was a cotton broker and served as president of the Atlantic Cotton Assn. He was founder and president of MacRae-Barnes Inc. of Greensboro; a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Summit Rotary Club and a very gifted musician. After his retirement, Mr. MacRae lived in Oriental, N.C. for 16 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Thorne MacRae and is survived by his son, John Sumter MacRae III of Greensboro; daughter, Agnes Patterson Petrovits of Lawrence, Kan., five grandchildren, John Douglas MacRae, Robert Thorne MacRae, Melissa Patterson Mann, Adam Christopher Mann and Samuel Leif Mann; as well as five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the Presbyterian Home and other times at his son's residence, 2107 Medford Lane. Minnie Edwards McBride
HAMPTON - Minnie Edwards McBride, 74, a native of Chocowinity, N.C., and a Peninsula resident for 50 years, died Saturday, July 10. Mrs. McBride was a housewife. She was a veteran of World War I and attended Grace Baptist Church. Survived by her husband, William L. McBride Sr.; a daughter, Patricia Ann McBride of Hampton; a son, William L. McBride Jr., of Hampton; four sisters, Maebelle Cooper of Portsmouth, Lonie Boyd of Grimesland, N.C., Ethel Lupton of Beech Island, S.C., and Edna Teall of La Grange, Ga.; two brothers, I.H. Frank McCabe
Frank McCabe, 74, of the 2800 block of Mapleton Ave., died Nov. 19, 1994, in a local hospital. Mr. McCabe was born in Washington, N.C. He was the owner and operator of a wholesale drygoods business for 45 years. He was a member of First Church of Christ (Hol.) U.S.A., Norfolk. He was a charter member of Metro-Anglers Fishing Club. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Jones McCabe; three daughters, Gloria M. Creekmur and Gladys M. Riddick of Chesapeake and Lenora M. Drummond of Hampton; two sons, Frank McCabe Jr. of Chesapeake and Keith McCabe of Virginia Beach; a sister, Irma Bright of Boston, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in First Church of Christ (Hol.), U.S.A. by Bishop Eugene Brown Sr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Willie James McClaney
Mr. Willie James McClaney, 69, of 350 Bridge St., Aurora, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Saint Union Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop Charles L. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. McClaney was born in Bullock County, Alabama, on Nov. 24, 1937. He was the son of the late Tommie L. and Orie L. McClaney. He was married to Barbara McFadden McClaney, who survives. Survivors include two sons, James McClaney of Jamaica, N.Y., and Mark McClaney of Atlanta, Ga.; four daughters, Linda McClaney, Kim McClaney and Dominique C. McClaney, all of Jamaica, N.Y., and Regina Forston of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; four brothers, Joe McClaney of Delaware, Albert McClaney of Jamaica, N.Y., Bernard Johnson of South Carolina, and John McClaney of Blounts Creek; and six sisters, Rosie Butler of Columbus, Ga., Mable Ivey and Verna Goshea, both of Union Spring, Ala., Betty McClaney of Jamaica, N.Y., Priscilla Goshea of Carlisle, Pa., and Barbara McClaney of Oklahoma. Lula M. McCloud
Lula M. McCloud of the 6900 block of E. Tanner Creek Drive died March 8, 1999. Born in Pantego, N.C., she was a member of Bethlehem Disciples Church, Norfolk, and the widow of Charlie McCloud II. She is survived by two daughters, Rosa Thigpen and Brenda Taylor, both of Bridgeport Conn.; six sons, Charlie McCloud, John McCloud and James McCloud, all of Norfolk, Rudolph McCloud of Suffolk, Floyd McCloud of Odenton, Md., and Jimmy McCloud of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Isbell Ward of Norfolk and Jeannie Weston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 26 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Disciples Church, Norfolk, by Bishop Gordon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge. Lyndell McCloud
Lyndell McCloud, 40, of Oakland, Calif., and formerly of Norfolk, died Jan. 21, 1993. Mr. McCloud was born in Pantego, N.C. He was employed with the Sheriff's Department of Oakland. Survivors include his mother, Lula M. McCloud of Norfolk; two sisters, Brenda J. Taylor and Rosa M. Thigpen, both of Bridgeport, Conn.; six brothers, Charles McCloud, John McCloud and James McCloud of Norfolk, Rudolph McCloud of Franklin, Floyd McCloud of Oden, Md., and Jimmy G. McCloud of New York; aunts; uncles; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Charlie McCloud. A memorial service will be conducted at noon today in Bethlehem Church of Christ Disciples, 939 Marietta Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. Joshua Edwards. Burial will be Oakland National Cemetery. Lula Mae McCoy
Lula Mae McCoy, longtime teacher and administrator in the Philadelphia school system, and a busy entrepreneur who ran three businesses in the city, died April 2. She was 77 and lived in Logan. McCoy worked in the school district for 34 years as a teacher of both secondary school students and adults in special and vocational education. She also was a coordinator of the Resource Center at Bok Vocational High School and career development specialist there. She and her husband, Edward Samuel McCoy, operated two cleaning and tailoring shops and a fish market for many years. McCoy was born in Belhaven, N.C., to Barbara Woodley Hoyle and the Rev. Tony Bruce Hoyle. She got her early education there. After arriving in Philadelphia she continued her education at Temple, where she received a bachelor's degree in education and a master plus-30 degree in vocational education. She later received a master's degree in education from Antioch University. McCoy was a skilled seamstress and she and her husband opened a cleaning and tailoring shop in the Garment Square section of North Philadelphia. They later opened a second cleaning and tailoring shop and a fish market. Her business and education careers overlapped by a few years. She eventually turned the businesses over to other family members. She retired from the school district in 1992. McCoy was a 55-year member of Tindley Temple United Methodist Church. Besides her husband of more than 50 years, she is survived by two sons, Ronald E. and Wayne DeValle McCoy; two daughters, Diane McCoy Lackey and Tahiya McCoy Nyahuma; a sister, Ella Mae Sutton; a special friend, Hattie Collins; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Shirley Virginia Jones ''Shirl'' McCoy, of the 5400 block of Sandpiper Lane, died June 29, 1995, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mrs. McCoy was born in Pantego, N.C. She was a nurse at Diamond Springs Medical Center; a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church; State Home-Health Services; national, state, and local Association of Educational Secretaries and #111 Eastern Star-Blooming Light Chapter O.E.S. (P.H.A.) Survivors include her husband, Linnard McCoy, and a son, Gregory McCoy, both of Norfolk; her mother, Vinona Griffin Jones; sisters, Ethel J. Campbell of Portsmouth and Alma J. Jemison of Hartford, Conn.; grandchildren, Gregory McCoy, Antuane McCoy, Antonio Smith and Juwan Britt; and two stepdaughters, Linda Turrentine and Kartina Lee, both of Durham, N.C. She was predeceased by her father, James Jones. A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, 1141 Campostella Road, Norfolk, by Dr. Ronnie Joyner. Mr. Carnell McCuller, 48, of 851 Harding Road, Chocowinity, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Cornerstone Family Worship Center with Bishop James S. McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mr. McCuller was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 29, 1957. He was the son of the late Willie McCuller Sr. and Mary L. Young McCuller. He attended the Beaufort County schools. Survivors include five sisters, Teresa M. Ward and Debrine Weatherington, both of Washington, and Jerome M. Ward, Nanette Peele and Cleo Speller, all of Chocowinity; and two brothers, Willie McCuller Jr. of Washington and David McCuller of Chocowinity. The family will receive friends at the home. Lillian Elizabeth McDilda
VIRGINIA BEACH - Lillian Elizabeth McDilda, 89, entered into rest Saturday, Aug. 30, 2002. She was born in Belhaven, N.C., was a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach and a charter member of Norfolk Church of God. Mrs. McDilda was the widow of George W. McDilda and was predeceased by her sister, Stella E. White. She is survived by her son, Larry Palmer and his wife, Carol; a niece, Stella Reid; three great-nieces, Nylia Proescher, Cheryl Lisa Gibson and Kathy J. Boucher; five great-great-nieces; a great-great-nephew; and two great-great-great-nieces. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Colonial Grove Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. Ellen McGhee
Ellen McGhee of the 2400 block of E. Virginia Beach Blvd., a domestic worker, died Dec. 24, 1992, in a local hospital. Mrs. McGhee was born in Belhaven, N.C. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk; was Emeritus President of the Inspirational Choir, Finance Secretary of the Social Service Dept.; President of the helping hand club, Nurses/Technician Unit; and member of the Female Usher Board. She was a volunteer helper for the Youth & Scouts Dept., Kitchen Committee and a member of the Mid-Day & Wednesday night Prayer Services. She attended Sunday School. Survivors include her husband, Arthur McGhee; a daughter, Shirley Holmes of Fremont; a sister, Ethel Mae Carrey of Bronx, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. I. Joseph Williams. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Eleanor Jones McGinnis
Eleanor Jones McGinnis, 93, a Beaufort native and resident of Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Carteret General Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Ocean View Cemetery, Beaufort. The Rev. John Willis will officiate. She was born on Nov. 5, 1913, in Beaufort to the late Christopher Delamar Jones and Mary Lutie Carrow Jones. She graduated from Beaufort High School in 1929 and North Carolina College for Women in Greensboro in 1932. After college she taught English and French at Beaufort High School for approximately 11 years. She married Harry I. McGinnis. Their daughters, Katherine, Eileen and Margaret were born in Beaufort. The family moved to New Orleans where she lived until 1979 and while there managed a successful Real Estate Agency. Mrs. McGinnis later resided in Waynesville and Greenville where she was an active teacher in adult literacy programs and a library volunteer. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Emma Jones, Lutie Jones Chappell, John G. Jones, Dorothy Jones Moon, Mildred Jones, Paul S. Jones, Christopher D. Jones II and Katherine Jones She is survived by her daughters, Mary Katherine Bland and husband, Charles, of Beaufort, and Eileen McGinnis of Los Altos Hills, Calif., Margaret McGinnis and husband, Thomas Charles, of Marshall. On March 7, 1931, he married the former Malvina Ross, who preceded him in death on February 25, 2005. Mr. McGowan was a life-long resident of Beaufort County and a retired farmer and commercial fisherman. He was the oldest member of St. Clair’s Church of Christ. Survivors include his daughter, Gloria McGowan Alligood and her husband, Jack of Belhaven; his son, Tony McGowan and his wife, Ginny of Bath; one brother, Adrian Lee McGowan of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mary Virginia Beacham McGowan, age 66, a resident of 1956 Black Jack Grimesland Road, Greenville, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at her home following a long illness. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oakdale Cemetery with pastor Edwin Hill officiating. Johnnie Carrow, Adam Congleton, Jeremy Wallace, Harold Modlin, Jeffrey Carrow, Daniel O’Merry, Fredrick Squires, and Ricky Hodges will serve as pallbearers. William and Timmy Frizzell will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mrs. McGowan was born July 29, 1940, In Beaufort County, the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth and Henry Z. Beacham. She attended Beaufort County Schools and on November 21, 1956, she married Jack Carlton McGowan, who preceded her in death on October 1, 1996. Survivors include three daughters, Teresa M. Squires and Mary Magdalene M. Hodges, both of Greenville, and Trudy M. Hardy of Washington; two sons; Jack Carlton McGowan, Jr. and Frederick Lee McGowan, both of Chocowinity; three sisters, Nancy Modlin of Virginia, Debbie Carrow of Chocowinity and Jackie Congleton of Washington; three brothers, Marshall “Buddy” Beacham of Ayden, Lawrence Beacham and Kenneth Beacham, both of Washington; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren. Mrs. Orpah Clark Davenport McLaughlin, 86, formerly of Village Circle Apartments, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Ridgewood Nursing Home of Washington. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Timothy Mills officiating. Mrs. McLaughlin was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 3, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Esther Clark. She attended the Aurora Schools. She was married to Lindsay Q. McLaughlin, who preceded her in death May 10, 1989. She was a retired licensed practical nurse who had worked at Tayloe Hospital and with Drs. Rodman, Partrick and Stephenson. She attended Wharton Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Walter Davenport of Washington and Wade Davenport of Raleigh; one daughter, Esther D. Tony of Charlotte; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. AURORA - Viola "Margie" McMicken, age 74, of 409 Idalia Road in Aurora died Wednesday, November 23. A service was held Saturday, November 26, 7 pm, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington. She worked in inventory control at Texas Gulf, was curator for the Aurora Fossil Museum, and was a member of Bath Garden Club, Bath Historical Society and attended Aurora Methodist Church, Edward Christian Church and White Hill Free Will Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Albert L. McMicken, Sr.; three sons, Albert Louis McMicken of Charlotte, Michael Layne McMicken of Richmond, VA and David Leonard McMicken; three grandsons; one brother, Darroll Mark Smithy of Houston, TX; two sisters, Erlene Barta of Hull, TX and Wilma Barta of Sour Lake, TX. Edna Louise Elliott Peed McQuay
Mrs. Edna Louise Elliott Peed McQuay, age 72, a resident of 108 Camelot Street, Sherwood Forest, died Monday, October 9, 2006 at the home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the First Baptist Church, Washington, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Moore and Rev. Greg Barmer. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. McQuay was born in Chocowinity, N.C. on November 13, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Tillman Roscoe Peed, Sr. and Helen Louise Taylor Peed Daniels. Mrs. McQuay was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Ruth Sunday School Class and WMU Group #4. Mrs. McQuay has served on the Benevolence committee, Bereavement committee and the Outreach committee of the First Baptist Church. On November 13, 1980, she married John “Wriston” McQuay. Sr., who survives. Surviving with her husband are a son, Julian Jackson “Jack” Elliott, Jr. of Millers Tavern, Va.; a daughter, Julia Jacqueline “Jackie” Alexander of Sumter, S.C.; three stepsons, John Wriston “Johnny” McQuay, Jr. and Jerrold Bruce “Jerry” McQuay both of Charlotte, Joseph Darrow “Joe” McQuay of Miami, FL; a sister, Julia Peed Gerard of Washington; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McQuay was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Mae Peed; and three brothers, Guy Adrian Peed, Sr., Tillman Roscoe “T.R.” Peed, Clyde Wesley Peed; and step father, James Jackson “Jack” Daniels. Hilton Ray McRoy
Hilton Ray ''Hick'' McRoy, 64, a resident of Chandler Road, Route 1, Vanceboro, died at his home Monday morning. Mr. McRoy was born in Beaufort County May 7, 1929, the son of the late Jim and Sudie Hodges McRoy. He had been employed as a trouble shooter with the Singer Furniture Co. at Chocowinity for the past 43 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Marie McRoy of the home; a daughter, Judy Annette McRoy Boyd of Chocowinity; a son, Hildred Ray McRoy of New Bern; five grandchildren; four sisters, Rosa Lee Gurley of Williamsburg, Va., Mamie Smith and Esther Mae Norris both of Newport News, Va., and Sadie Smith of Greenville; six brothers, Blaney McRoy of Blounts Creek, Bill McRoy of Washington, Archie McRoy of Williamsburg, Va., James McRoy of Sebring, Fla., Jerry McRoy of LaBelle, Fla., and Elmer Lee McRoy of Homestead, Fla. A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Paul Funeral Home, Washington Chapel, by the Rev. Bobby Chandler. Burial will be in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Mr. Jasper "Robert" McRoy, age 69, a resident of 1932 Old Bath Highway, Washington, passed Saturday, January 20, 2007 at his home. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Monday, January 22, 2007 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington conducted by Pastor Henry Horne. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted at Oakdale Cemetery. The following will serve as active pallbearers: Snody Carrow, Robbie Bullock, Mickey Linton, Rusty Carrow, Doug Currin, and Sandy Blizzard. Mr. McRoy was born in Beaufort County on December 4, 1937. He was the son of the late Jasper Rudolph McRoy and Lillian Pearl Cayton McRoy. Mr. McRoy served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the City of Washington, retiring as purchasing agent with 23 years of service. Mr. McRoy was a member of the Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was a member of Orr Lodge #104 A.F. & A.M, Past Master of the Lodge, and a Shriner. On October 1, 1961, Mr. McRoy married the former Helen Asby, who survives. Surviving with his wife are two sisters, Lucille McRoy Wilkinson and her husband, Max, and Jackie McRoy Hoell and her husband, Tony all of Washington. Clifton R. Main, 68, of Chester, Va., died on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at John Randolph Hospital, Hopewell. Mr. Main was born in Washington, N.C. and was the son of the late Hansford and Carsie Pinkhin Main. He was a United States Air Force veteran and was a retired truck driver for Central Transport Inc. Mr. Main was a member of Lakeside Drive Moose Club, Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Ethel A. Main; four sons, Frederick and wife, Carol Broughman, James Broughman, Clifford R. and wife, Tara Main and William and wife, Mary Main; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters. Carolyn Bellamy Mallison, 86, of Washington, passed away Monday, September 25, at her home, 603 West Main Street. Mrs. Mallison was born in Beaufort County September 13, 1920, the daughter of the late Morton Bellamy and Mary Leah Robbins Bellamy, and was a graduate of Washington High School and lived in Beaufort County all her life. On November 6, 1942 she married Samuel Macon Mallison, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1974. She owned Mallison Implement Company and was the first female franchise owner of a John Deere dealership in the United States. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and was a member of the DAR and her chapter was the Major Reading Blount Chapter where she was a past treasurer, regent and district officer. She was on the Board of Directors of North Carolina National Bank. She was a member of the Tea and Topics Book Club and also the Lunch Bunch. Survivors include one son, Samuel Macon Mallison, III of Washington; two daughters, Ann Robbins Mallison of Raleigh and Carolyn “Lyn” Mallison Morrow of Chapel Hill; one grandson, Thomas A. Morrow, Jr. and his wife Monique of Fayetteville and two great-grandchildren, Caroline Abigail Morrow and Macon Rose Morrow. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Morton Bellamy. NEWPORT NEWS - Syble B. Mallory, 80, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Born in Pinetown, N.C., she had been a Newport News resident since 1943. She was a charter member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Newport News. She was employed by Mallory Electric Company. Mrs. Mallory was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Belvin Boyd. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, R. C. CHESAPEAKE - Robert A. Marslender, Jr., 86, died on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 in Chesapeake. Born in Aurora, N.C., on May 24, 1917, he was the son of the late Robert Augustus Marslender Sr. and Viola Bennett Marslender. Mr. Marslender was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Ada Lee Marslender. He moved to Norfolk County in 1920 and then to Moyock, N.C. in 1926 where he was a graduate of Moyock High School. Mr. Marslender moved to Chesapeake in 1941 and served the City of Chesapeake as commissioner of the revenue until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of Moyock Baptist Church and Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 258. Mr. Marslender is survived by his children, JoAnn VonBerner of Lakeland, Fla., Robert A. Faye Jackson Swindell Martins
Mrs. Faye Jackson Swindell Martins, age 65, Greenville, died Tuesday December 12, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday December 15, 2006 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Rev. Paul Brafford and Rev. Frank Gentry. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Buddy May, Luther Ange, Leonard Ange, Kenneth Ange, Tom Howley and Gray Mayo will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Martins was born in Pitt County on May 5, 1941, daughter of the late Harold Fay Jackson and Ethel Warren Ange Jackson. She was a graduate of Bath High School. Mrs. Martins was employed with the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC, later with the Social Security Administration and transferred to the Voice of America. She retired after 34 years of civil service. Mrs. Martins was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Greenville and the Women’s Ministries. On September 19, 1992, she married Marty Martins who survives. In addition to her husband, Marty, of the home; she is survived by her daughter: Christy Lynn Swindell of Greenville; her step-son: Frank Martins and his wife, Fran of Buxton, ME; her step-grandson: Ben Martins of Boston, MA; her step-granddaughter: Jill Martins of Seattle, WA and her grand dog: Ike. Fannie Laura Tuten Mason
Mrs. Fannie Laura Tuten "Tinsie" Mason, 88, of 1378 Sparrow Bay Road, Blounts Creek, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at her home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home of Washington with pastor Ray Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Mason's grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Mason was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 7, 1914, to the late James Abender Tuten and Dora Tetterton Tuten. On Dec. 19, 1932, she married Andrew Shanklin Mason, who preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1995. Mrs. Mason was a retired housekeeper having worked at the Beaufort County Home for many years. Survivors include one daughter, Judy M. Snider of Blounts Creek; four sons, Donza F. Mason of Pinetown, Carlton L. Mason of Blounts Creek, Kenneth R. Mason of Plymouth and David W. Mason of Bath; two sisters, Bessie Gibbs of Washington and Hallie Jones of Pinetown; one brother, Roy Tuten of Chocowinity; 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Helen Credle Mason
Mrs. Helen Credle Mason, 86, formerly of 107 Patricia Road, Washington died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. John Yount officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Allen Thompson, Leon Mason, Pete Credle, Kenneth Cahoon, Lyle Cahoon and Dennis Thompson. Mrs. Mason was born in Swan Quarter on Feb. 14, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Seth Bridgeman Credle and Claudia Jarvis Credle. On July 7, 1940, she married Joseph Harvey Mason, who survives. She moved to Washington in 1947. In December 2006, she entered Countryside Nursing Home in Stokesdale. Mr. Mason began living with his son in Belews Creek to be near the nursing home. Mrs. Mason was a member of the First United Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Circles and served as President of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She held several Grand Lodge offices and was Worthy Grand Matron. Survivors include one son, Joseph E. Mason of Belews Creek and one sister, Blandina Cahoon of Engelhard. She was preceded in death by one brother, Seth Bridgeman Credle Jr. and one sister, Edith Credle Thompson. Mrs. Mabel Kathryn Matthews Mason, age 75, a resident of 10895 N.C. Hwy. 99 South, Bath, NC died Wednesday evening, June 7, 2006 at Beaufort County Hospital. Mrs. Mason was born in Martin County on December 17, 1930, daughter of the late Jessie Thomas Matthews and Selma Raybell Stalls Matthews. She was a graduate of Oak City High School. She was a nurse at the Tayloe Hospital and later worked for Dr. Boyette. On September 7, 1956, she married Roscoe Beacham Mason who preceded her in death on August 3, 2000. She is survived by her daughters: Kathy Rinker and her husband, Mark, of Plymouth; Earline Webb and her husband, Martin, of Bath; and Sandra Merrill and her husband, Randy, also of Bath; her son: Franco Mason and his wife, Luciana, of Italy; her grandchildren: Michael and Dario Mason, Ashley and Mason Webb and Amelia and Amber Merrill; and her great-granddaughter: Greta Mason. She is also survived by her brothers: Jessie “Bud” Matthews, Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Garner; Bobby “Bob” Matthews and his wife, Clara, of Fayetteville; Sam Matthews and his wife, Saundra of Billings, MT and Teddy “Ted” Matthews and his wife, Connie, of Chester, VA. BELHAVEN - Paul Ormond MASON, 53, of the Ponzer community, Route 1, Belhaven, died Thursday, September 18, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. Born near Bath, September 20, 1943, he was the son of the late Timothy P. Mason and Myrtle Ormond Mason Patrick. He was a commercial fisherman and was an avid supporter of the commercial fishing industry. He was a member of the newly organized Pamlico Sound Waterman's Assn. and the Albemarle Fisherman's Assn. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Stotesberry Mason; a son, Timothy C. Mason and his wife Dawn of Belhaven; two daughters: Paula M. Cuthrell and her husband Albert of Belhaven, and Tammy G. Mason of the home; two sisters: Margaret Ann M. O'Neal of Swan Quarter, and Wanda M. Jefferson of Belhaven; and one granddaughter, Jamie. Mr. Mason was preceded in death by a brother, Jarvis Mason, and a sister, Lou Ellen M. Gibbs. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the gravesite in the Mount Olive Church of Christ Cemetery in Ponzer. Adam Henderson will officiate. Mr. Alexander Wallace Massie, Jr., age 58, a resident of 721 West 3rd Street in Washington died Tuesday January 8, 2008 at his home. He married Linda Gail Norman Massie on October 15, 1969 who survives. Mr. Massie was self-employed for many years as a painting contractor prior to his retirement in 2001. Ann Kimbrough Weber Mathias
Mrs. Ann Kimbrough Weber Mathis, age 80, and a resident of 721 West Main Street, Washington, N.C., died Saturday evening, May 26, 2007, after a brief illness. Mrs. Mathis was born in Shreveport, LA. on April 20, 1927, the daughter of the late George and Norma Weber. She was a graduate of Fontbonne College in Saint Louis, Missouri, where she met and married Dr. James L. Mathis on June 2, 1948. Together they started a family and built his medical practice in Elk City, Oklahoma, and later in Dayton, Tennessee. After several moves with children in tow, she and her husband settled in Eastern North Carolina. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Washington, North Carolina, which she dearly loved and quickly called home. Her pleasures were cooking, weaving, genealogy, and her many friends and family. She was a full-time parent who managed the raising of her children and husband, as well as many other enterprises including the University of Oklahoma’s Medical School Faculty Club, a rock quarry, catering business, and the Grimesland General Store. She was indeed a woman of many talents. She is survived by her son Jeff Mathis and his wife Diane of Grimesland, N.C.; daughter Leslie Mathis Gray and her husband Bob of Washington; daughters Linda Blakeley of Belhaven, N.C., Lynn Mathis of Hertford, N.C. Robin Harris of Hertford, and Karen Mathis of Greenville. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that extend from Eastern North Carolina to San Diego, CA, all of which were proud to call her Nana. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dr. James L. Mathis and her son Mark A. Mathis of Raleigh. Garland Matthew Matkins
Mr. Garland Matthew Matkins, age 82, a resident of 1806 John Small Ave., Washington, died Friday, June 30, 2006, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2006, at the Old Ford Church of Christ, conducted by Eddie Bowen. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington. Mr. Matkins’ nephews will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Matkins was born in Alamance County on Sept. 10, 1923. He was the son of the late George Chambers Matkins and Annie Bell Tickle Matkins. Mr. Matkins was the assistant manager at Thomas & Howard Company in Washington for many years. Later, he worked at Hanover Distributing and Bass Refrigeration. Mr. Matkins served his country in the Army Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific Theater during World War II and the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He attended First Church of Christ for several years, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and worked with the youth. Mr. Matkins was a member of Old Ford Church of Christ and served as a Sunday school teacher. On Jan. 12, 1952, Mr. Matkins married the former Ruby Evelyn Abernathy, who survives. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Beverly Weirick of Cary; and one son, John Matthew Matkins of Fuquay-Varina; and two grandchildren, Matthew Matkins Weirick and John Collier Weirick. Mr. Matkins was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Laurel and Ashley Matkins; five brothers, Sam Matkins, Thurman Matkins, Bill Matkins, Ed “Dick” Merton Matkins and John Fred Matkins; and three sisters, Ann Matkins Gurner, Gurtie M. GREENVILLE - Mr. Daniel Sawyer “Dan” Mayo, 73, died Thursday, April 1, 2004 at his home in Greenville. Dan, son of the late John Augustus Mayo and Hattie Sawyer Mayo, was born in Washington Park, Beaufort County, NC on August 29, 1930. He graduated from Randolph Macon Academy and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the United States Coast Guard and began a 30 year employment with Planters National Bank in Plymouth, NC. In 1960 he moved to Greenville where he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. David Tillman Mayo, Sr.
Mr. David Tillman Mayo, Sr., age 95, a resident of 838 Dublin Run Road, Aurora, NC died Thursday October 26, 2006. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday October 28, 2006 at Dublin Grove Free Will Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Graham Lane, Pastor John Carrawan and Rev. Earl Sadler. Burial will follow in the Cuthrell Cemetery. Mr. Mayo was born in Beaufort County on March 10, 1911, son of the late Tillman Mayo and Rose Ella Dunn Mayo. He attended schools in the Beaufort County School System and Eureka College of Ayden (now Mount Olive). On December 23, 1936 he married the former Lucille Lamm who preceded him in death on January 9, 1999. He was a farmer, businessman and distributor of fertilizer, seed and chemicals, and a produce broker. Mr. Mayo was a member of the Board of Trustees of Beaufort County Community College, the Ruritan Club and the ASCS Board. He was a member of the Dublin Grove Free Will Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter: Carole Mayo Eidson of Kernersville; his sons: Gilbert Mayo of Raleigh and David T. Mayo, Jr. of Aurora; his grandchildren: Gilbert Mayo, Jr., Dianna Mayo Hoffman, David E. Eidson, Sarah M. Eidson, David T. Mayo, III, Paris L. Mayo; his great grandchildren: Elise and Jeffray Mayo and his sister: Rachael M. Stowe of New Bern. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by 15 siblings. Junior F. Mayo, 80, husband of Irene O. Mayo, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001. Born in Aurora, N.C., he had been a Peninsula resident since 1946. Mr. Mayo, an Army veteran of World War II, retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1983 after 37 years of service. He was a member of Parkview United Methodist Church, Hampton. In addition to his wife, Irene, Mr. Mayo is survived by two sons, Michael F. Mayo of Hampton and Kenneth L. Mrs. Mayo was born in Pamlico County on October 31, 1927, daughter of the late William Thomas “Will” Lupton and the late Amanda Leary Lupton. She was a graduate of Hobucken High School. Mrs. Mayo married Jesse Ray Mayo on April 19, 1947, who survives. She was a clerk with the Charles Department Store in Washington for more than twenty years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Washington. Mrs. Mayo is survived by her husband: Jesse of the home; a daughter: Jackie Gautier and her husband Harry of Washington and another beloved daughter: Laurie Moore and her husband Kenny of Washington. Mrs. Mayo was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Monday August 6, 2007, at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home. Thurman Alvin Mayo
Thurman Alvin Mayo, 62, of the first block of Windsor Blvd. died Dec. 11, 1996, in his home. A retired construction worker and member of the AFL-CIO, he was a native of Chocowinity, N.C., and a U.S. Army veteran. He was the son of the late Minnie Paramore Mayor and Willie Mayor. Survivors include his daughters, Donna M. Smith of Yale, Va., and Debbie M. Crocker of Ivor; son, Alvin Mayo Jr. of Smithfield; six sisters, Lucille M. Moore of Washington, N.C., Joyce T. Mayo of Blounts Creek, N.C., Ann M. Cover of Irvine, Calif., Bea M. Woolard of Virginia Beach, Brenda M. Cox of Washington, N.C., and Faye M. Williams of Las Vegas; brother, Dr. Dalton Mayo of Clinton, N.C.; grandchildren, Beth Smith and Eli Smith of Yale and David Crocker of Ivor. A graveside funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Windsor Cemetery by the Rev. Michael D. Halley. Hill Funeral Home is in charge. Avis Meekins Mecolick
Avis Meekins Mecolick, 56, of Washington, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006. Born in Beaufort County, September 26, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Hilton L. and Doris Gibbs Meekins. She was a clerk at the Washington Motel. Surviving are a daughter, Frieda L. Mahlkuch of Concord; a brother, H.L. Meekins, Jr. of Washington; and two grandchildren, Lee Meekins and Tim Meekins of Concord. She was preceded in death by a sister, Karla Meekins Mooney. Ernestine Smith Meekins
Mrs. Ernestine Smith Meekins, age 81, a resident of 108 Armory Point, Washington, died Tuesday morning, December 26, 2006 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at 2nd Baptist Church on Highway 264 West. Family will receive friends and provide a lunch for family and friends following the service at 305 Channel Run (Pamlico Plantation) in Washington. Mrs. Meekins was born in Guilford County on September 19, 1925, daughter of the late Ernest Henry Smith and Elizabeth Carrie Cox Smith. She grew up a Quaker and for most of her life was a homemaker. She was married to James Claibourne Meekins in March 1945 who preceded her in death. She had been a resident of the Beaufort County area for the past 10 years. Mrs. Meekins was an avid reader, loved to spend time with her family and loved to paint, “she was a good woman and mother.” She is survived by her children: Beverly Adams and her husband, Phil of Maryland and Washington, N.C.; Patricia Meekins (Aretakis) of Washington and Leslie Duke and her husband, Mike of Greensboro; her grandchildren: Cheryl Adams Celebi and her husband, Kaan, Wesley Adams, Jr. and his wife Clair, Kevin Adams and his wife Daniela, Gus Aretakis, Christina Aretakis Lewellen and her husband, Christopher and Colin Duke; her great-grandchildren: Davis Adams, Sarah Borden Adams and Emma Adams. She is also preceded in death by an infant daughter and two brothers. Paul Funeral Home of Washington is serving the Meekins family. Timothy Levi Meekins
WASHINGTON - Timothy Levi Meekins, age 16, died Tuesday, August 8 at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Born in Belhaven, April 10, 1979, he was the son of Hilton L. and Marie Gibbs Meekins. He attended Bath Elementary School where he graduated this past school year. Surviving are his parents, H.L. & Marie Gibbs Meekins; a sister, Shelly Meekins of Washington; his paternal grandmother, Doris G. Meekins of Engelhard; his maternal grandmother, Vergie Jones of Washington; his paternal great-grandmother, Nancy Gibbs of Engelhard. Funeral services will be held on Friday at Pleasant Grove Church Of Christ. Phil Emmert and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in Gibbs' Family Cemetery in Engelhard. Marie E. Meiners
Marie E. Meiners, 55, passed away March 23, 2003. She was born in Washington, N.C. to the late Franklin John DeMilt and Elizabeth Harper DeMilt. She was a school teacher for the Norfolk public school system and had worked for the Shelter Thrift Store for several years. She is survived by a sister, Ann E. Woods of Norfolk; and two nephews, Michael Woods of Suffolk and Mark Woods of Virginia Beach. All services will be private for the family. Myrtice P. Brinn Melnyck
LUDLOW - Mrs. Myrtice P. (Brinn) Melnyck, 80, of Laroche St., was called to Heaven on Sept. 30 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bath, N.C., she met her husband Stephen C. Melnyck Sr. in Norfolk, Va. in 1942. She then worked for the next 21/2 years in Oakridge Tennessee on the Manhattan Project on a secret assignment involving the development of the atom bomb. On Nov. 22, 1945, Mr. Melnyck, after serving in WWII, was discharged from the Marine Corps and went to Oakridge to marry his beloved Myrtice on Nov. 27, 1945. They wed in a secret ceremony in which no cameras were allowed to capture the memories of the day and shortly after moved to Ludlow where they started their family. Myrtice worked for 12 years at Smith and Wesson and was a volunteer for the Veterans Administration and the Holyoke Soldiers Home. She was also a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and a member of its Ladies Guild as well as a past commander of the D.A.V. Woman's Auxiliary and a member of the Golden Agers and Ludlow Senior Citizens. Myrtice was the beloved wife of 58 years to Stephen C. Melnyck Sr., a member of D.A.V. Chapter 94, Ludlow; a loving mother to Stephen C. Melnyck Jr. of Feeding Hills and Cynthia Blatt of Ludlow; a dear sister to Gayle Bogart of Virginia and the late Harry Brinn, Willy Brinn, Meredith Mitchell, Lois Southworth, Anna Dae Lemma and Rae Brinn; a loving grandmother to Kara Sawa and her husband Steve and Cortney Kolodziey and a beloved great-grandmother to Ella Dae Sawa. Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at the Ludlow Funeral Home, with Liturgy of Christian burial in St. Mary of the Assumption Church and burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Ethel Daniels Melson
Ethel Daniels Melson, 92, formerly of the 300 block of Great Bridge Blvd., died Sept. 19, 2000, in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Melson was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Allen and Stella Moore Daniels. She was the widow of Julian Riley Melson. Memberships include: Centerville Baptist Church in Chesapeake for over 60 years and the Great Bridge Senior Citizens Club. Survivors include two sons, Walton Ray Melson of San Antonio, Texas, and Robert Cecil Melson of Glendale, Calif.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, today beginning at noon, with a funeral procession following at 2 p.m. The Rev. David Shelton will officiate. Mary Lee Mhyre
Mary Lee Mhyre, 80, of Castle Rock died April 11. Services were April 16, with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Mhyre was born in Pinetown, N.C., on April 27, 1921. She married Bill Gabbard, 1941. She was an electronics assembler for North American Rockwell and also worked at Douglas County schools through the senior exchange program. She volunteered in the Castle Rock Interfaith Task Force. Survivors include son Bill of Castle Rock; step-daughter Barbara Schell of Virginia; sister Estelle Williams of North Carolina; a grandchild; numerous step-grandchildren.
