Georgia Carol Pajak

PORTSMOUTH - Georgia Carol Pajak, 55, of the 3400 block of Angler St., died Aug. 30, 2001, in Suffolk.  Born in Washington, N.C., she was a former employee of the Navy Exchange Cafeteria, Naval Station Norfolk and a member of West Norfolk Baptist Church.  Mrs. Pajak is survived by her husband of 16 wonderful years, Leon Chester Pajak Jr.; a son, Timothy Vancelette and wife Kelly Jo of Clayton, N.C.; three sisters, Carrie Copeland of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Linda R. Waters of Plymouth, N.C., and Cathy Allen of Louisville, Miss.; two brothers, Coy Haislip of Smithfield and Jimmie D. Reason of Wendel, N.C. She was predeceased by her parents, Carrie-Dell and Sam Reason.  A funeral will be held Monday at noon in West Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Melia with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Hazel Agela Palasthy

Hazel Agela Palasthy, 82, of the 4400 block of Columbia St., died March 18, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.  Mrs. Palasthy was born in Belhaven, N.C. She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church and was past president of Portsmouth Womens Club.  Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Arthur M. Palasthy Sr.; two sons, George Edward Palasthy of Virginia Beach and Arthur M. Palasthy Jr. of Capron; and three grandchildren.  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Evelyn Chauncey Panayotis

Evelyn Chauncey Panayotis, 82, died Saturday, March 13, 1999. Born in Beaufort County, N.C., she had been a Hampton resident for 50 years. She was a member of New Bethel Presbyterian Church.  Mrs. Panayotis is survived by her daughter, Carolyn F. King of Jacksonville, Fla., and her son, Melvin Wayne Panayotis; her grandchildren, Christine C. Kelley and Richard L. King Jr.; and two great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel by the Rev. James C. Allen. Alice Harrison Parker

Mrs. Alice Harrison Parker, 90, of Old Mill Road, Chesapeake, Va., and formerly of the Deep Creek community, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the cemetery of Cypress Chapel Christian Church, Suffolk, Va., with the Rev. John Wolfe officiating.  Mrs. Parker was married to Christopher Harvey Parker Sr., who preceded her in death.  Survivors include two sons, Chris H. Parker Jr. of Pinetown and David Lee Parker of Suffolk, Va.; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Katherine P. Charles Matthew Parker, Sr.

Mr. Charles Matthew Parker, Sr., 83, of 1697 Seed Tick Neck Road, Pinetown, died Monday, April 17, 2006 at Pungo District Hospital.  A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Free Union Free Will Baptist with Rev. Woodrow Freeze officiating. Burial will follow in Yeatesville Cemetery. The deacons of Free Union Free Will Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at Mr. Parker’s home.  Mr. Parker was born August 5, 1922 in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Charles Cleveland Parker and Lydia Augustus Fortiscue Parker. On December 25, 1955, he married the former Lew Ellen Keech, who preceded him in death on May 20, 2003. Mr. Parker was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. He was retired from Texas Gulf (PCS) Corporation in Aurora. He was a member of Free Union Free Will Baptist Church and the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Belhaven American Legion Post # 249, serving as Commander and Chaplain; a member of V.F.W. Post 10347, serving as Quarter Master; he was a member of the Free Union Fellowship Club and Cragmont Club and attended Louisburg College and North Carolina State University.  Survivors include Mr. Parker’s sons, Charles M. Parker, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Washington and Gordon Tracy Parker and his wife, Becky of Pinetown; three grandchildren, Melissa Parker, Chris Parker and Jessica Parker; two step-grandchildren, Mary Daniels and her husband, Jim, and Cody Cunningham and one great-grandson, Hunter Daniels.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Parker Cuthrell in 1975.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Tuesday, April 18, 2006)


Charlie Lee Parker

WASHINGTON - Mr. Charlie Lee Parker, resident of 355 Metro Arms Apt., Washington, N.C., died Thursday, March 23, 2006 at Beaufort County Hospital. Mr. Charlie Lee Parker, 74, of 355 Metro Arms Apartments, Washington, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington.  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Word of Life Worship Center, 318 N. Pierce St., Washington, with Elder Kenneth Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Parker was born Feb. 9, 1932, in Pitt County. He was the son of the late Charlie Mooring and Georgeanna Parker. He was married to Geraldine Bowen Parker, who survives. He was employed with Lilley & Sons House Movers until his retirement. He was a member of Holy Ghost Deliverance Church.  Survivors include two daughters, Josephine P. Mourning of Springdale, Md., and Bonnie Morning of Greenville; one son, Charlie L. Parker of Washington; four stepchildren, Mary Parker of Greenville, Amy P. Versher and Winnie Parker, both of Washington, and Timmie Parker of Snow Hill; two brothers, Jack Mooring of Virginia and David E. Ebron of Washington; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his children, Malba Parker, Katie L. Parker and Jerry Parker; and his siblings, Ernest Parker Sr., Hattie M. Hazel Wells Parker

Mrs. Hazel Wells Parker, age 79, a resident of 926 McCotters Marina Drive, Washington, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at her home.  Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Monday, February 12, 2007 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Rev. Selby Smith. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.  Mrs. Parker was born in Martin county on October 11, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Allie Wells and Annie Mae Roberson Wells. Mrs. Parker was a homemaker and a member of Love Baptist Missionary Baptist Church.  On July 21, 1951, she married Cheshire “Tobe” Josephus Parker, Jr., who survives.  Surviving with her husband are five sons, Buddy Parker and his wife, Pam of Oxford, N.C., Alton Parker and his wife, Audree of Bath, Hal Tayloe Parker and his wife, Emily, George Parker, Roy Lee Parker and his wife, Missy all of Washington; two sisters, Ina Faye Mobley of Jamesville, Mamie Clyde Raynor of Bridgeton; five grandchildren, Kimberly Bailliard and Antione, Kelley, Blake, Graham and Austin Parker and two step grandchildren, Jenna and Chris St. Clair.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by three brothers, Woodrow, Dick and Raleigh Wells, and two sisters, Myrtle Gardner and Belia Mae Asby.  The following will serve as active pallbearers: Mark Leggett, John Al Asby, Johnnie Gardner, Ted Gardner, Tommy Davis and Doug Batchelor. Henry W. Parker, Jr.

Henry W. Parker, Jr., 64, of the 100 block of York Ave., passed away on the morning of July 31, 1998, after a long illness.  He was born in Washington, N.C., the son of the late Henry W. Parker Sr. and Margaret Dail Parker of Washington, N.C. He graduated from Danville School for the Deaf in Danville, Ky. He was a glazier and a longtime employee of Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Stovall Glass Co.  He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Davis Parker; two sons, Henry W. Parker III of Portsmouth and Michael T. Parker of Richmond; one daughter, Cindy E. Parker of Richmond; and three grandchildren, Corey and Amber Parker of Portsmouth and Cellina of Richmond; four sisters, Margaret Parker Burchett and Dorothy Lucille Lightbody, both of Portsmouth, Ida Dail Tugwell of Falkland, N.C., and Mary Luvina Harris of Greenville, N.C.; and also a host of nieces and nephews.  He was a loving, devoted husband, father and brother who will be greatly missed.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Earl Sutton. Interment will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Thelma Powers Parker

WASHINGTON - Mrs. Thelma Powers Parker, age 81, a resident of 65 Fort Shores Dr., Chocowinity, died Thursday night, January 25, 2001, at Beaufort County Hospital.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, officiated by Dr. Jimmy Moore.  Mrs. Parker was born February 14, 1919, daughter of the late G.E. Powers and Beaulah Keith Powers. Her husband, Preston L. Parker Sr., preceded her in death. Mrs. Parker served in the U.S. Army during WWII. She was a beauty operator and a lifetime member of First Baptist Church.  Survivors include two sons, Preston L. Parker Jr. and Edward Ellis Parker, both of Chocowinity; one brother, Gideon Powers, of Durham; four sisters, Vera Wreen, Vernie Cook, Gladys Campbell, and Alta Smith, all of Durham; and two grandchildren. Lillian Lynda  Leggett Parrish

ROCKY MOUNT - Lillian Lynda Leggett Parrish passed away quietly at home with her family at her side on Sunday morning, July 1, 2007. She was born in Beaufort County, NC, December 22, 1931 to the late Woodson and Lillian Campbell Leggett of the Old Ford Community of Washington, NC.  Mrs. Parrish was a retired Registered Nurse having graduated from the Lenoir Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Kinston, NC in 1953. She worked in several different nursing positions around the State of North Carolina moving with her late husband, NC Highway Patrol 1st Sergeant, Wesley D. Parrish.  She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Parrish Bradshaw and husband, Pete of Rocky Mount, NC and her grandson, Wesley Bradshaw, also of Rocky Mount. She is also survived by her friend Brad Baker of Rocky Mount.  A funeral service will be held, Tuesday evening, July 3rd at 7 p.m., followed by a visitation at the Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC. The Rev. James Alley, Rev. William V. Grisham and the Rev. Dr. Carleton McKita officiating. James Burbank Parvin

Reverend James Burbank Parvin, 82, a resident of 108 Hillcrest Drive, Washington, NC died Wednesday June 6, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington.  A memorial service will be held Saturday June 9, 2007 at 11:00am at First United Methodist Church of Washington officiated by Reverend Ray Wittman, Reverend Marshall Old, Reverend Doctor Ernest R. Porter and Reverend Doctor Charles Michael Smith. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Reverend Parvin was born in Beaufort County on December 1, 1924 son of the late Robert Burbank Parvin and the late Mary Singleton Parvin. He was a 1943 graduate of Washington High School. Reverend Parvin served his country in the US Army during World War II in the European and Pacific Theaters. He continued his education at the former Atlantic Christian College and Duke University Divinity School where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in divinity. Reverend Parvin served as a United Methodist Minister for thirty years in the NC conference of United Methodist Church, six years of which he served as Greenville District Superintendent. He retired in 1989 after serving numerous appointments around the conference as Elder. Reverend Parvin was a past 32nd degree mason with the New Bern Masonic Lodge.  Surviving along with his wife Velma “Boots” of the home are two sons: James DeWayne Parvin and his wife Margaret Ann of Mt. Olive, NC and Douglas Edward Parvin and his wife Belinda of Morehead City, NC; a daughter: Linda Parvin Howard and her husband Danny of Washington; a sister: Annie Myrtle Parvin Dudley of Washington and seven grandchildren: Natalie Ruth Parvin Griffith, Lauren Ashley Parvin, Bridget Gail Parvin, Brandon Parvin, Sarah Parvin, Courtney Howard and Danny Howard. Reverend Parvin was preceded in death by five brothers: Blount Parvin, Patrick Parvin, William Parvin, David Parvin and Marshall Parvin and a sister: Dera Parvin Price.  The family will receive friends at the home located at 108 Hillcrest Drive, Washington, NC. Albertis Paschall
Sept. 1, 1932 – Oct. 9, 2003

OAK HILL - Albertis "Bill" Paschall, 71, of Maytown Road, a resident since 1973, died Thursday at Bert Fish Medical Center, New Smyrna Beach.  Mr. Paschall, a Coast Guard veteran, was born in Belhaven, N.C., and moved to this area from Washington, D.C. He was a former automobile body repair technician. He attended East Carolina College. Mr. Paschall was a member of the former Moose Lodge, Daytona Beach, and the Eagle Lodge of Oak Hill. He enjoyed auto racing.  Survivors include a son, Steve, Pinetown, N.C.; a daughter, Chris Woolard, Oak Hill; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Annie Ross Patrick

Annie Ross Patrick, 107, of the 300 block of Lynn Shores Drive, a former schoolteacher, died Dec. 3, 1990.. Mrs. Patrick, a native of Beaufort County, N.C., formerly taught in Beaufort County. She was the widow of Edgar Patrick and was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Washington, N.C. Survivors include a daughter, Katie T. Franklin of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Paul Funeral Home, Washington, N.C. James Hoover Patrick

Mr. James Hoover Patrick, 78, of 1007 Pamlico St., Washington, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at home.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Loving Union Free Will Baptist Church with Bishop A.H. Hartsfield officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Mr. Patrick was born in Beaufort County on July 31, 1928. He was the son of the late Beulah Norvella Northern Patrick and James Patrick. He attended Beaufort County public schools. He worked as a security guard at the former Moss Planing Mill in Washington. On April 22, 1976, he married Mary Louise Hawkins Patrick, who survives. He was a member of Loving Union Free Will Baptist Church and served as a deacon.  Survivors include one daughter, Betty P. Northern of Greenville; two sons, Jimmy Hawkins of Chocowinity and Danny R. Hawkins of Greenville; one brother, Booker T. Patrick of Washington; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two daughters, Gladys Nixon and Ailen Rogers; one sister, Beulah Taylor; and one brother, Victor Patrick.  The family will receive friends at the home.  Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. William Lee Patrick

Mr. William Lee “Bud” Patrick, 49, a resident of 5805 Broad Creek Road, Washington, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Washington’s First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Billy McRoy, Lex Mann, Billy Long, Ronnie Toler, Brad Toler, Hank Tice, Jesse Whitley and Keith Douglas will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Nobles, Philip Lee, Henry Little, Issac Boyd, Todd Williamson and Charles Haddock.  Mr. Patrick was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 3, 1956. He was the son of the late William Aydlette Patrick and Marie Tyer Patrick, who survives. He attended Washington City Schools and graduated from the former Pamlico Community School of Washington Park. He was employed as parts manager with Lee Tractor Co. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington, serving on its long-range planning committee.  Survivors include a daughter, Lauren Ashley Patrick of the home; a son, William Andrew Patrick of the home; and two sisters, Ann P. Toler of Richmond, Va., and B.J. Beatrice Wallace Patton

Mrs. Beatrice Wallace Patton, 71, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007.  A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Montlawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Melinda Mintz and Winifred Lathem officiating.  Mrs. Patton was born in Beaufort County on July 10, 1936. She was the daughter of the late William Henry and Hilda Mae Braddy Wallace. She attended Woman’s College in Greensboro (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). On Oct. 13, 1957, she married Charles Fredrick Patton, who survives. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Beaufort County, worked in the tax department in Martin County and as finance officer for the City of Roxboro.  Survivors include one son, Fred Patton Jr. of Clayton; two daughters, Terri Garrett of Oxford, and Hope Patton of Garner; and four grandchildren.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Thursday, July 19, 2007)


Clinton A. Paul

Clinton A. Paul, 85, of the 3700 block of Robin Hood Road, died April 13, 1995, in Virginia Beach.  Mr. Paul was born in Belhaven, N.C., and was formerly employed with Bond Bakery and Sinclair Gasoline Company. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk and Ruth Masonic Lodge #89.  Survivors include his wife, Zola B. Paul; two daughters, Fay P. Edwards and Sallie P. Ekstrum, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Olga Swift of Lake Isabella, Calif.; two grandchildren, Cynthia E. Short of Fort Bliss, Texas, and Robert C. Shultz III of Virginia Beach; and two great-grandchildren.  A graveside service will be conducted at noon today in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Dr. John P. Mason and Dr. Robert Y. Sandford. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. The family will be at the residence. J. Bonner Paul, Sr.

Mr. J. Bonner Paul, Sr., 91, President and co-owner of Paul Funeral Home in Washington and Belhaven, died Friday evening, November 23, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital.  A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by the Rev. Dr. John Ledford, Pastor Philip Jethro and the Rev. Dr. Michael Price. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  I.B. Paul, Josh Paul, Scott Clark, Billy Slade, Derik Davis and Bobby Hodges will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Beaufort County Grange, Bunyan Ruritan Club, the Improved Order of the Redmen and the staff of Paul Funeral Home will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Mr. Bonner, as he was fondly known by all, was born in the Pungo Community of Beaufort County on July 30, 1916, son of the late Lewis Bonner Paul and Evelyn Stokesbury Paul.  Mr. Bonner was a graduate of Washington High School and an outstanding athlete. His strength and huge frame made him a natural lineman for the Washington Pam Pack in the mid ’30s. Following high school, he attended the Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. and graduated in 1937. He returned home, only to get called for duty in the Navy during World War II, where he served in the Pacific in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. After the war, he returned to full-time funeral service work and over the years has been instrumental in helping many aspiring youth interested in the profession with his great knowledge and nationwide contacts in the field. Mr. Bonner served for five years on the N.C. State Board of Mortuary Science. The last year he served in the capacity of president and he served ten years on the N.C. Burial Association Commission. His virtually unlimited knowledge of Beaufort County geography and its people has been a great source of information for many family members. His counsel has been sought by many who needed information not located in a computer because of his keen mind and recall.  At anytime you walked by Mr. Bonner’s office door, there was someone that had dropped in to chat or seek information. Many plaques and awards, from various businesses, civic organizations and community involvement, adorn the walls of his office. He was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award presented by the Rotary Club. On June 19, 2003, he was awarded the North Carolina Funeral Director Association Honorary Membership given in recognition and appreciation for his support and contributions to the advancement of the association and practice of funeral service. On July 30, 2006, his 90th birthday, he was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, awarded by Governor Michael F. Easley and presented by Representative Arthur Williams. On October 16, 2007, Paul Funeral Home hosted the District 2 Funeral Directors Meeting. At that meeting, he was presented a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the members of District 2 for grateful appreciation for his professional service and dedication to the advance of funeral service. Mr. Bonner was a life-long member of the First Christian Church in Washington where he served in virtually every office, including numerous terms as deacon. He was the longest-term member of the Bunyan Ruritan Club, a member of the Orr Lodge # 104 A.F. & A.M., the Beaufort Country Grange, Tau Tribe 19, I.O.R.M. and was one of the charter members of the Washington Jaycees. Mr. Bonner was a part of the group which brought Washington under the City Manager/City Council form of government. He served several terms as Beaufort County Coroner before the county came under the Medical Examiner System.  Mr. Bonner is survived by his wife, Lillian Vann Gaylord Paul. He is also survived by his son: Joseph (Joe) Paul Jr. and his companion, Gaye Stewart of Washington, his daughter: Ava E. Paul and her partner, Ed Everett of Bath; his grandsons: Scott Clark of Greenville, Josh Paul of Washington and Bryan Harris of Oriental; his sister: Dorothy Carawan of Williamston; and a number of nephews; his step-daughter: Carolyn Coordes and her husband, Don of Wake Forest; his two step grandchildren: Kristy Seaboch and her husband, Mark and Karen Guest; his four step great-grandchildren: Max Guest, Mitchell Seaboch, Haley Seaboch and Ashlyn Seaboch. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Albritton, and five siblings, who he was instrumental in raising because of the early death of their father.   The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home.  Mr. Bonner was successful in managing the family’s two funeral home locations in Belhaven and Washington. Today, both locations stand as a monument to his integrity and expertise as a compassionate funeral director and businessman. Jackson Potter Paul

Mr. Jackson Potter “Jack” Paul, 62, of Beaufort County, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.  Mr. Paul was born May 27, 1945 in Belhaven. He was the son of Lois Paul and the late Thorne Paul. Margaret Linton Paul

Mrs. Margaret Linton Paul, 86, of 4925 Sidney Road, Belhaven, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City.  A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday in the cemetery of Sidney Original Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. David Pooser officiating.  Mrs. Paul was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 5, 1921. She was the daughter of the late George and Mary Davis Linton. She was married to Walton Earl Paul Sr., who preceded her in death Aug. 3, 1996. She was a homemaker. Mary Clark Paul

Mary Clark Paul, 89, died Aug. 13, 1996, in her residence.  Mrs. Paul, the widow of Mike M. Paul, was a Protestant. She was a native of Chocowinity, N.C.  Survivors include two stepsons, Jack Dale of Dayton, Ohio, Steve Dale of Wake Forest, N.C.; two brothers, Fred Clark Jr. of Norfolk, Clyde Clark of Chesapeake; a grandson; family friends, Linda Hartman and Mabel Hartman; and companion, Flora Yates of Chesapeake.  The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by Dr. Ray O. Jones in Loving Funeral Home Chapel, Churchland. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Michael Wayne Paul. Jr.

Michael Wayne Paul, Jr., age 36, a resident of 1015 Climbing Rose Turn, Cary, NC died accidentally Thursday February 14, 2008.  A funeral will be held 2:00 PM Sunday February 17, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Rev. Mrs. Mittie Loraine Bowen Paul, age 85, a former resident of 9274 N.C. Hwy 99 North, Pantego, died Monday, February 19, 2007 at the Three Rivers Health & Rehab Center in Windsor.  Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, February 23, 2007 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, conducted by Rev. John Henry Lane and Pastor Al Markuson. She was the daughter of the late Timothy Milton Bowen and Minnie Lorraine Sitterson Bowen. Mrs. Paul was a homemaker. Nina Mae Stowe Paul

Nina Mae Stowe Paul, age 77, a resident of 2380 Yeatesville Road, Bath, N.C. died Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at her home.  A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2006 at St. Clair’s Church of Christ officiated by Craig Hagen and Norman Miller. She was a 1946 graduate of Oriental High School. Mrs. Paul married Louis Wilson Paul, Sr. who preceded her in death on February 24, 1982. She was a retired seamstress and had worked with Gaylord’s Upholstery and A & W Upholstery. Wilbert O. Paul

Wilbert O. Paul, 78, of Oldsmar, died Sunday (Oct. 19, 1997) at Mease Dunedin Hospital. He was born in Bath, N.C., and came here in 1989 from Brockton, Mass., where he retired after 35 years as a serviceman for Bay State Gas Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Safety Harbor, and the VFW in Whitman, Mass. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary E.; two sons, Gregory, Boylston, Mass., and Wilbert Jr., Australia; two daughters, Susan O'Connor, East Falmouth, Mass., and Janet Lamp, Coto de Caza, Calif.; four brothers, Thorn, Paul and Phillip, all of North Carolina, and Howell, Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Betty Cordon and Annie Mae Spain, both of North Carolina, and Audrey Sarno, Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Laura Butt Windley Payne

Mrs. Laura Butt Windley Payne, age 96, a resident of Autumnfield Rest Home of Belhaven passed away at Pungo District Hospital, Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005.  A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Fred Fordham. Visitation will be from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home Saturday.  Mrs. Payne was born July 6, 1908 in the Yeatesville community, the daughter of the late Samuel Bryan Windley and Lula Tripp Windley. She lived most of her life in Beaufort County. Mrs. Payne graduated from Pantego High School and attended East Carolina Teachers College, where she received her teaching degree. She taught in several different schools including Pantego Elementary and Pungo Christian Academy, where she last taught before retirement after 45 years in education. Mrs. Payne married Durward W. Payne on Jan. 28, 1944, who preceded her in death in 1963. She was the president of the Alumni Association of The Pantego Ye Ole Academy and led the effort for the preservation of the Academy building. Mrs. Payne was also a member of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church.  Mrs. Payne is survived by a daughter: LuAnn Whitaker and husband Guy of Wake Forest and a grandson: Seth W. Sallie Swindell Pearce, 81, of the 5100 block of Portsmouth Blvd., died Jan. 7, 1995, in her residence.  Mrs. Pearce was born in Bath, N.C. Mrs. Mary Jo Nolley Pearson, 50, of 245 S. Peggy Elizabeth Waters Peele

Peggy Elizabeth Waters Peele, 82, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, died Sept. 22, 2006. Born in Beaufort County, North Carolina, to Richard Dewey and Ella Louzette Waters, she moved to Portsmouth in 1943 when she married the late James A. Peele. Peggy worked in Portsmouth at the Seaboard Railway Company in the Auditor of Revenues department until the birth of her first child. She loved being a mother and grandmother and enjoyed introducing her children to the world of reading, reference books and libraries and instilled in them a love of learning. She also enjoyed cooking and canning vegetables from her husband’s garden. Peggy was a longtime member of Grove Park Baptist Church where she worked in the library, taught Sunday school and was a Girls’ Auxiliary leader many years ago. Peggy was predeceased by her husband, James and two sisters, Louglen and Jacqueline. Survivors include her daughter, Betty Lou; son, Jim and his wife Marion; and her grandchildren, Lauren Peele and Jimmy Peele. She is also survived by four brothers, Elisworth, Gerald and his wife Betty, Bobby and his wife Libby and Moody and his wife Maxine; one sister, Ella Jane; her uncle, Jesse and his wife Iola; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Grove Park Baptist Church, 1400 Rodman Ave., by the Rev. Jim Woodland and the Rev. Richard Moody Waters. Burial will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery. Robert L. Peele, Sr.

Robert L. Peele, Sr. of the 1600 block of Colon Ave. died May 4, 2004, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Washington, N.C., he was a merchant seaman and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in Vietnam.  He is survived by his wife, Melva Peele of Norfolk; two daughters, DeBree Peele-Pettus of Fort Worth, Texas and Deborah Peele of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Robert L. Peele Jr. of Fort Worth; two stepbrothers; and a host of other relatives and friends.  His remains are to be cremated and memorial services will be private. Carlos A.  Troy McCray Peele

Mr. Troy McCray Peele, 85, of 192 Peele Road, Aurora, died Saturday, Feb., 23, 2008 at Beaufort County Hospital.  Funeral services will be a graveside service at Dublin Grove on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Earl Sadler officiating and Mr. John Carawan.  Mr. Peele was born in Royal on May 3, 1922 to the late William David and Ida Green Peele. On Nov. 18, 1942 he married Tessie Raye Bonner, who survives.  He served in the Navy for 22 years before retiring from the military. He retired in 1984 after working for Texas Gulf and FCX. He was very active in his home church, Dublin Grove F.W.B. where he served as senior deacon, among other duties, for many years.  Survivors are two sons: David C. Peele and his wife, Zella, of Aurora and Alan McCray Peele and his wife, Vickie, of Washington; two daughters, Jane Peele Brooks and her husband, John, of Lexington, N.C., Joy Peele Dunn and her husband, Don, of Aurora and one brother, James C. Peele of Aurora. He was cherished by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  The family will receive friends at home and after the service in the fellowship hall of Dublin Grove F.W.B. Marena Brickell Handy Pemberton

Mrs. Marena Brickell Handy Pemberton, affectionately known to all as Brick, died peacefully on Sunday March 12, 2006 at her home. She was born June 22, 1916, to Robert Rathbone and Margaret Styron Handy and was the youngest of seven children. In addition to her parents and siblings, her husband, William D. Pemberton preceded her in death.  Mrs. Pemberton served her country during World War II as a member of the WAVES and continued employment with the Federal Government until her retirement. Her joy was serving others and she was devoted to the care of her family and friends. She loved her friends and they shared a bond as far back as their childhood.  Mrs. Pemberton was deeply loved by her nieces and nephews who thought of Aunt Brick as quite the modern businesswoman. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and granddaughter of the late Rev. Nathaniel Harding. She enjoyed membership in various organizations including the Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a charter member of the Carrollton Book Club and a member of the Cursillo community.  A memorial Eucharist will be held 11 a.m. on Friday March 17, 2006 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church conducted by the Reverend Donald Wiesner. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Chapel Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, P. O. Simon Pender, Jr.

Simon Pender, Jr. of the 2200 block of Centerville Turnpike S., a maintenance worker, died Feb. 2, 1992, in a hospital.  Mr. Pender was born in Aurora, N.C. He had been employed with Hardee's Realty Co. for nine years.  Survivors include a sister, Geneva Moore, and a brother, Abson Pender, both of Aurora.  The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Metropolitan Funeral Home, Norfolk, by the Rev. Bernice R. Penland

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Bernice R. Penland, 89, will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Washington Street United Methodist Church, Christ Chapel. Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, is in charge.  Mrs. Penland, wife of the late John B. "Jake" Penland, longtime Sports Editor of The State Newspaper, died Friday, November 24, 2000. Born in Washington, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lemuel Hiram Ross and Sallie Hodges Ross. She was a registered nurse having received her training at Women's Hospital and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. She was a former Chief Nurse of the maternity section at Doctors' Hospital in Miami, FL. She served in a number of capacities at the various hospitals in Columbia before retiring.  Mrs. Penland was a member of Washington Street Methodist Church and former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  Surviving are son, Julian Straughan Downing of Shreveport, LA, son and daughter-in-law, Ross Early and Yvonne P. Freddie Lee Perdue

Mr. Freddie “Fred” Lee Perdue, 76, of 119 South Fields Circle, Chapel Hill, NC, and formerly of River Hills, Chocowinity, NC, died Thursday, April 27, 2006 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.  A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, May 1, 2006 at Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Martin Luther King Blvd., Chapel Hill with the Reverends Ray Warren and Derik Davis officiating. He was the son of the late James David Perdue and Fannie Lou Davidson Perdue. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corp. On July 29, 1951, he married the former Pearl Clark, who survives. Mr. Perdue received his Master’s Degree in Science from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was a retired CPA and President of Southwestern Insurance Co. Mr. Perdue was an active member of Orange United Methodist Church. He also worked weekly at Habitat for Humanity, donated blood to the Red Cross and spent his leisure time fishing.  Survivors include his wife, Pearl Clark Perdue; his son, David Perdue of Washington, NC; his daughter, Sheila Eldred and her husband, Tim of Chapel Hill, NC; one brother, James Perdue of Vero Beach, FL; one sister, Rebie White of Montgomery, AL and one granddaughter, Sarah Eldred.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Verna Mae Pollard and a brother, Clyde Perdue.  Hillside Funeral Service of Washington is serving the Perdue family.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Sunday, April 30, 2006)


Reba Elizabeth Lilley Perkins

Reba Elizabeth Lilley Perkins, 83, of Moncks Corner, S.C., and formerly of Richmond, died November 28, 2000 in Charleston, S.C. A retired nurse, she was born in Washington, N.C., on October 19, 1917. She graduated from Washington High School in 1935 and attended nursing school at Garfield Hospital in Washington, D.C., and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Richmond. She was a nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital and also worked as a private duty nurse and at Richmond Memorial Hospital. She was a volunteer at Richmond Memorial Hospital and a charter member of the Lakeside Christian Church. She is the daughter of the late Grover Lilley and the late Martha E. Chesson of Washington, N.C.; and the widow of Ernest E. Perkins Sr., of Richmond. Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Black of Moncks Corner, S.C., and formerly of Richmond; a son, E. Edward Perkins of North Charleston, S.C., and formerly of Richmond; four sisters, Hazel Edwards, Laura Jarvis and Teenie Haddock of Washington, N.C., and Jane Schauble of Ozark, Ala.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Clarice White Perry, 72, of 311 Duke St., Belhaven, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.  A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. James Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in Belhaven with Elder Barry James officiating. Burial will follow at Whitfield & Whitley Cemetery in Belhaven.  Mrs. Perry was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Mammie Moore Clark and Curtis Clark. She attended the public schools of Beaufort County. She was a seafood technician with a seafood industry. Mrs. Perry was a member of St. James Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in Belhaven. Alice Bogart Searight Phillips

Alice Bogart Searight Phillips, 88, of Auburn, ME, formerly of Durham, NC, died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on April 24, 2002 at the Auburn, ME home of Elisabeth and Joel Salberg, her daughter and son-in-law, with whom she had been living.  Mrs. Phillips was born in Washington, NC on August 10, 1913, the daughter of the late Rev. Henry Brown Searight and Mary Katherine (Kathleen) Bogart. She was educated in Washington, NC schools. She graduated from Peace College in Raleigh, NC, in 1932 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University in Durham, NC, in 1934.  She was married in the Duke University Chapel on June 4, 1935 to the late James Henry Phillips, emeritus professor of religion at Duke University, the first Chaplain to the University and a University Marshall. Their wedding was one of the first of the many Duke Chapel weddings and is so registered on the first page of the Duke University Chapel Register I. In later years, she was the Hostess to the Duke University Chapel. As hostess she researched and wrote The Windows of the Chapel, Duke University, and published a memoir, Spire and Spirit, both of which have been used as resources by Duke University historians and have been referenced in other published works.  For many years she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Durham, NC, a member of the Friends of Duke Chapel and the Duke Campus Club. She was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of North Carolina, tracing her ancestry from Governor William Bradford of Plymouth, MA and his descendants from Lubec and Friendship, ME.  She is lovingly remembered as a dear and caring mother, grandmother and nana. She was a courageous and deeply spiritual woman who was a beacon to her family and friends, providing constant love, support and grace. She was widely traveled and an avid reader of the classics, biographies and history.  She is survived by a sister, Katherine Turner Searight Hinds of Williamsburg, VA, and a brother, Henry Brown Searight of Ormond Beach, FL; two daughters, Kathleen Alice Phillips Svensson of Sodertalje, Sweden and Elisabeth Leigh Phillips Salberg of Auburn, ME; six grandchildren, Marikje Kathleen Oosting Shreeve of Storrs, CT, Michelle-Marie Alexander of Durham, NH, Lisa Bradford Bessaoud of Georgetown, MA, Andrea Newland Clark of La Porte, TX, Michael Bradford (Brad) Richman of Portland, ME and Katherine (Kat) Perrin Richman of Portland, ME; eleven great grandchildren, Sahara Aktar Alexander, Kias Michael Bessaoud, Trevor Phillips Shreeve, Melika Kathleen Bessaoud, Sasha Farid Alexander, Michael Bradford Shreeve, Derrick Adel Bessaoud, Matthew Clark, Christopher Hendricks Shreeve, Miranda Balow Richman, Aidan Russell Richman and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.  A graveside service will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Annex B, Duke University Road, Durham, NC at 3:30 on Saturday, May 18. Ruby Lee Gurkins Phillips

Danny Kennedy officiating.  Mrs. Phillips was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 14, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Oliver “Plum” and Mary Foreman Gurkin. Ruth White Phillips

Ruth White Phillips, died April 7, 1997, in a Norfolk nursing home. She was 89.  The daughter of George B. and Lucie Latham White, she was born in Beaufort County, N.C., on Feb. 19, 1908. She was the widow of Harry Cullum Phillips. After graduating from Alliance High School in Pamlico County, N.C., she studied nursing at the Philadelphia General Hospital from which she graduated as a registered nurse in 1936. She practiced nursing in Greenwich, Conn., and in Norfolk. She was a member of Ghent United Methodist Church.  She is survived by a brother, Benjamin L. White of Corolla, N.C., and a stepson, Harry C. Frazier Thomas Pinkham

Frazier Thomas Pinkham, a born-again Christian, 69, died June 16, 1995 in a Norfolk hospital.  Mr. Pinkham was born in Washington, N.C. He retired from the quality control department of Ford Motor Company after 31 years and was a Navy veteran of World War II.  Beloved husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Mattie E. Pinkham; three daughters, Judy Shangraw, Joanne E. Jennings and Grace Pinkham, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Donna Woolard of Washington, N.C., and Mary Weber of Suffolk; two brothers, James Pinkham and Edward E. Pinkham, both of Washington, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Chris Pinkham, Donna Simpson, Karen Shangraw and Jeremy Jennings. He was predeceased by a son, Jerry T. Pinkham.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Rosewood Memorial Park by Pastor John W. Godfrey. Robert Earl Pinkham, Sr.

Calvin Coolidge Pittman

Mr. Calvin Coolidge Pittman, 82, of 1315 Bergin Road, Aurora, and formerly of Forte Shores Drive, Chocowinity, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington.  A private memorial service will be held at Mr. Pittman’s home at a later date.  Mr. Pittman was born in Johnston County on Jan. 23, 1925. He was the son of the late Thomas H. and Alice Woodall Pittman. He served in the Marines during World War II from 1942 to 1945. On Aug. 9, 1968, he married the former Lillie Latham, who preceded him in death Jan. 2, 1998. He retired from the former Carolina Power & Light as a service rep after 35 years of service. He was a former Beaufort County commissioner serving from 1970 to 1976. He served on the Beaufort County School Board from 1984 to 1988. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 675, York Rite, Sudan Temple and the Beaufort County Shrine Club. Edward Leroy Pollard

Edward Leroy Pollard, 72, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Williamsburg Community Hospital after a short illness. Born in Washington, N.C., Edward had been an area resident since 1954 and moved to King and Queen County in 1979.  Edward retired from the Naval Weapons Station in 1986 after 32 years of dedicated civil service. He was a watch repairman by trade and a faithful member of New Hope Memorial Baptist Church in King and Queen County and the Moose Lodge, Gloucester.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosabelle G. Pollard, in 1994.  His survivors include his four daughters, Libby Green and her husband, David, of Hampton, Joyce Ballew and her husband, Tim, of Gloucester, Kay Rook and her husband, Doug, of Ashburn, Va., and Amy Metivier and her husband, Mark, of Williamsburg; two sons, Wayne Pollard and his wife, Melinda, and Michael Pollard and his wife, Kathy, both of Yorktown, Va.; and 13 grandchildren, Leslie Payne, Clark and Erin Ballew, Megan Pollard, Patrick Ballew, Jonathan Green, Troy Pollard, Taylor, Devan and Madison Rook, Caroline Rose Metivier, and Jessie and Jason Ockerman.  A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home by the Rev. M., Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Hillside Funeral Service.  Mrs. Pollard was born January 16, 1921 in Beaufort County.  She was the daughter of the late Louis and Lilly Moore Clark.  She was a lifelong resident of Beaufort County and was a retired assembly line operator with Hamilton Beach.  She was a member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  She is survived by two sons, Clark M. Pollard of Washington and James F. James Earl Pollard

Rev. James Earl Pollard, age 60, a resident of 9761 Highway 17 South, Vanceboro, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at Beaufort County Hospital.  Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2006 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington conducted by Rev. Woodrow Catlett and Rev. Luther Powell. Burial will follow in Taylor Family Cemetery, Gray Road, Chocowinity.  The following will serve as pallbearers: James Sparks, Richard Pritchard, Jr., Steve Pollard, Glenn Pollard, Steven Pollard, Phillip Pollard, Leland Smith, and Donnie Smith.  Rev. Pollard was born in Beaufort County on January 22, 1946. He was the son of the late William Henry Pollard and Martha Bell Hannah Pollard. Rev. Pollard had worked as a taxi cab driver and service station operator. He had recently received his minister’s license. Rev. Pollard served as associate pastor at Emmanuel Holiness Church in Greenville.  On May 15, 1970, Rev. Pollard married the former Gloria Harrell, who survives.  Surviving with his wife are two sons, Richard Ervin Pollard and his fiance, Katherine Wainwright both of Greenville, Benjamin Earl Pollard and his fiance, Kelli Dawn Rakowski both of Vanceboro; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Woolard of Washington.  In addition to his parents, Rev. Mrs. Doris Marie Hopkins Pope, 52, of 201 Baker Drive, Washington, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington.  A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Deeper Life Ministries, Washington, with the Rev. David E. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Whitfield & Whitley Cemetery, Washington.  Mrs. Pope was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 5, 1954. She was the daughter of James Hopkins and the late Mary Gray Hopkins. She attended the public schools in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was employed at The Meeting Place Restaurant, Washington. She was a member of Emmanuel Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, Washington.  Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Pope, Natasha Pope and Juanita Harvey, all of Washington; one son, Bruce Hopkins of Washington; three sisters, Barbara A. Simmons and Jennette H. Smith, both of Washington, and Mary L. Jason Blanton officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, December 18, 2006 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at the home.  Mrs. Potter was born August 2, 1938 in Beaufort County.  She was the daughter of the late Vance Tyler Wells and Edna Kilby Wells.  She was a graduate of Washington High School.  On August 29, 1956, she married Herbert Mack Potter, who survives.  Mrs. Potter was a proud homemaker.  In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Pamela Potter Flanagan and her husband, Stuart of Washington; one son, Herbert Mack Potter, Jr. of Washington; two sisters, Carol Humphreys and her husband, Henry of Washington and Joan Pope and her husband, Thomas of Belhaven; three brothers, Vance Wells, Jr. and his wife, Jenny of Anderson, SC, James Wells of Vanceboro, NC and Eddie Wells of Washington, NC.  She was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Wells Andrews in 2003.  (Hillside Funeral Home obituary posted December 18, 2006)


Marvin Ray Potter

Marvin Ray Potter, 72, of Beckner Street died Dec. 22, 1996, in a local hospital with his family by his side.  Mr. Potter was a retired sheet metal mechanic for the public works department at N.A.S. He was born in Washington, N.C., and was a member of Primitive Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea.  Survivors include his wife, Vashti B. Potter; four daughters, Diana Hamilton of Norfolk, Norma Arnold of Glen Allen, Va., Susie Aldridge and Debbie Lamastra, both of Virginia Beach; two sons, Buddy Potter of Bryans Road, Md., and Ray Potter of Virginia Beach; sister, Edna Mears of Pensacola, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews.  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Elder Kenneth Windham. Frederick Latham Potts, Jr.

ENGELHARD - Frederick Latham Potts, Jr., 70, of 34518 U.S. Highway 264, Engelhard, died Thursday morning, July 22, 1999, at his home.  Born in Washington, NC, May 20, 1929, he was the son of the late Frederick Latham and Katherine Dudley Potts. An outstanding athlete, he lettered in baseball, basket- ball and football at Washington High School and later attended the University of Virginia on an athletic scholarship. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was married to the former Elizabeth "Pud" Long. They lived in the Raleigh area for 25 years where he worked with the Square D Corporation until 1984 when they moved to Engelhard and operated the Hyde Supply of Engelhard until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Potts was a member of the American Legion Post #211, the Mattamuskeet Lodge #328 AF & AM and was an active member of St. George's Episcopal Church where he was a member of the Vestry.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. George's Episcopal Church at Lake Landing in Hyde County. The Reverend James H. Lupton will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in the church cemetery. His nephews, Charles Potts, Reed Potts, Morgan Potts, Hank Liverman, Walt Liverman, Ken Andrew and Forrest Anderson, will serve as pallbearers.  Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Pud" Long Potts; two sons, Frederick L. Terry Lee Powell

Mr. Terry Lee Powell, 45, of Lot 42 Maryanna Mobile Estates, Washington, died Monday, May 22, 2006.  A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Mike Huppmann officiating.  Mr. Powell was born May 10, 1961, in New Hanover County. He was the son of Broston Gary Powell and the late Bessy Louise Lehrshell Powell. On March 25, 1992, he married the former Margaret “Dixie” Dixon Bunch, who survives. He was employed as a painter with Hackney and Sons, Inc. of Washington. Mary Osborne Poyer

Mary Osborne Poyer, the first principal of West Hialeah Elementary when the school opened in the early 1950s and then principal of Morningside Elementary through 1964, died Thursday of respiratory failure. She was 89.  Mrs. Poyer, whose late husband Charles Edison Poyer was a nephew of inventor Thomas Alva Edison, began her teaching career at age 15 in the same North Carolina country school where her mother began her career.  In 1938 Mrs. Poyer moved to Miami and took a teaching job at Coral Gables Elementary. She taught at West Hialeah Elementary and then Morningside Elementary from 1952 to 1964, when she retired.  "She was a character," said Alice Robbins, Mrs. Poyer's secretary at Morningside. "She was very outgoing and had a wonderful social life. She belonged to LaGorce Country Club and  went to every big party on Miami Beach. We used to joke that she used to live like no other principal."  Mrs. Poyer's husband had a successful real estate business in Miami Beach and was regularly listed in society columns.  "She didn't have to work, but she loved it," Robbins said.  Mrs. Poyer was born in Washington, N.C., and studied at Eastern Carolina University. She received a master's degree in administration from Columbia University in New York.  Mrs. Poyer is survived by her son, Wesley Lins; nephew Thomas Osborne; four grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.  She will be buried in an Edison family plot in Port Huron, Mich. Billy Bray Price

Mr. Billy Bray Price, 62, of 1305 Redmond Road, Rome, Ga., died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Floyd Medical Center.  A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Davis Cemetery, N.C. Highway 45, Pantego, with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating.  Mr. Price was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 28, 1944. Edna Dailey Price

Mrs. Edna Dailey Price, 90, a resident of Washington Park, died Saturday August 4, 2007 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home of Washington.  A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday August 8, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Caswell Shaw and Rev. Danny Allen. Pallbearers will be Jim Spain, Jerry Briley, Bill Davis, Johnny Flowers, Sammy Marshall and Lloyd Fox.  Mrs. Price was born in Beaufort County on October 12, 1916, daughter of the late Tillman Jones Dailey and the late Rachel Martin Dailey. She was a 1934 graduate of Washington High School, and married Eugene Milton Price who preceded her in death on May 21, 1981. Mrs. Price was a retired seamstress who had worked with Belk’s Department Store and Carole’s Dress Shop, both in Rocky Mount, and she continued to sew in her home. Mrs. Price was a former member of First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount and a current member of First United Methodist Church of Washington. She was active in Girl Scouts and her children’s school PTA in her younger years.  Mrs. Price is survived by a son, Don Wilkinson and his wife Shirley of Washington; two daughters: Betty Lou Price Smith of Midlothian, VA and Debbie Price Bailey and her husband Bart of Allen, Texas; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Vivian Estelle Bonner Price

She attended the Beaufort County Schools. She was married to Theodore Price Sr., who preceded her in death. She was a member of Mount Hebron Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ).  Survivors include one son, Theodore Price Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Ivie Waters of Washington, and Martha P. Copeland of New York; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by three children, Ernest, Vantroy and Lavon and several siblings.  A walk-in visitation will be conducted today from 1-7 p.m. at Whitfield & Whitley Funeral Home, Washington. William G. Privette, Jr.

William G. Privette, Jr., 67, a retired Navy captain who was a decorated flyer in World War II, died of pneumonia Oct. 15 at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center. Capt. Privette, who lived in Falls Church, was born in Washington, N.C. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, was commissioned in the Navy in 1938, and became a pilot.  During World War II, he flew from carriers in the central Pacific. Among the actions in which he took part were raids on the Marshall Islands and the first raids on the major Japanese naval base at Truk in the Caroline Islands. He led a squadron of torpedo planes in the first Truk attack. After the war, Capt. Privette's assignments included command of the carrier Yorktown. He also was chief of staff of the U.S. Naval Mission to Brazil. He was stationed in the Bureau of Personnel in the Navy Department when he retired in 1968.  His decorations included two Distinguished Flying Crosses and five Air Medals.  Survivors include his wife, Frances Quinn Privette of Falls Church; two sons, Army Maj. William G. III, of Fort Irving, Calif, and J. MacBryde, of Huntington, N.Y.; a daughter, Janet P. Emma Guthrie Pryor, 71, of the 300 block of Tuggie Eure Road, died Dec. 15, 2003, in her home.  Mrs. Pryor was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Blake M. and Martha Foster Guthrie. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Clairs Church of Christ in Bath, N.C.  Surviving are her husband, James H. Pryor; a daughter, Vanessa Wilbur of PoncedeLeon, Fla.; three sons, Lonnie M. Ayers Sr. of Suffolk, Glenn R. Ayers of Spring Grove, Va., and John B. Ayers Sr. of Floyd, Va.; two stepdaughters, Blanche Chamberlain of Chesapeake and Wanda Faye Frank of Norfolk; a stepson, Wayne Pryor of Virginia; two brothers, Russell Guthrie of Chesapeake and James Guthrie of Eure; 16 grandchildren and a great- grandchild.  A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Funeral Held Today for Mrs. Bertha Pugh Belhaven - Mrs. Bertha Pugh died Saturday afternoon at her home here following an illness of four years.  She was 58 years old.  Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Pentecostal Holiness church with the Rev. John Bunch, pastor, officiating. Samuel Pugh Passes Friday - Belhaven - Samuel L. Pugh, age 71, retired seaman, died late Friday in the U.S. Public Health service center in Norfolk, Va. following a long illness.  Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Paul Funeral home here with the Rev. CHESAPEAKE - Samuel L. Pugh, 71, of 807 Wadena Road, Princeton Halls, died Friday in a Norfolk hospital.  A native of Hyde County, N.C., he was a son of William D. and Mrs. Mary Credle Pugh and the husband of the late Mrs. Bertha Kreche Pugh.  He was a retired merchant seaman.  He is survived by a son, Richard W. Pugh of Chesapeake; three daughters, Mrs. Irma Wilkins and Mrs. Mary Rose of Belhaven, N.C., and Mrs. Edward Sumerton of Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.  The body is being sent from Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, to Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, for a funeral service today at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Joseph Charles Puglisi

Mr. Joseph Charles Puglisi, 93, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on December 2, 1912. He passed away on May 21, 2006. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Laura Agnes, in 2004 after 67 years of marriage. Joe lived the last four years of his life with his daughter, Grace Placente, and her husband, Richard, in Chocowinity, where he made many wonderful friends. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife, Carmenza, and their children, Michael, Jr. and Cathy; also Carolyn Placente, daughter of Richard and Grace Placente. Joe also has two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister: Esther Abate of Brooklyn, N.Y., and brother, William Puglisi of Pennsylvania.  A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington, N.C. Charlie Harding Purser

CHOCOWINITY - Charlie Harding Purser, 59, a resident of Hwy 17, South, Chocowinity, died Saturday evening, December 12, 1998 at Beaufort County Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a fall.  Funeral service will be held 11 a.m.  Tuesday, December 15, 1998 at Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Chocowinity with Reverend Henry Horne officiating. Burial will follow in the Lewis family cemetery, Edward, N.C.  Mr. Purser was born June 26, 1939 in Craven County, the son of the late Charlie Blount and Janie Buck Purser. He attended Craven County Schools. At the age of 15, he began his career as an auto mechanic working for Smith-Mills Pontiac. Later he became the owner and operator of Purser's Body Shop which he operated for 25 years, Purser's Trucking and Purser's Used Cars.  On December 14, 1973, he married the former Brenda Faye Jones, who survives. Mr. Purser, an avid horse lover operated Ponderosa Stables.  He was a member of the Chocowinity Saddle Club hosting several years of trail rides, horse shows, races, and related events. Mr. Purser attended Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was the president of "Stop The Hogs" in Beaufort County.  Mr. Purser had served in the National Guard.  Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Kimberly P. Smith of Vanceboro; two sons, Gregory Allen Purser of Washington and Daniel Christopher Purser of the home. Other survivors include one sister, Mary Jo Mills of Arapahoe, and three brothers, James Edward Purser and Garland Franklin Purser, both of Vanceboro, and Donald Ray Purser of Chocowinity.  Mr. Purser was preceded in death in addition to his parents by two sons, Jody Harding Purser in 1987, and Charlie Jay "C.J." She loved unconditionally.  She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Owen & husband Frank Owen, Stepdaughters: Helen Mayes, Faye McDaniels, Lib Gilliam, Sisters-in-law, Irma Tingle, Audrey Purser, and Brother in law, Harvey Arthur Purser, grandchildren: Michael & Lisa Rice, James & Maria Rice, Sheri & Michael Martin, Stepgrandchildren: Scott & Bonita Owen, Gary & Ellen Owen, Greg Owen, Lori & David Hunnings, Todd & Anglea Owen; The love of her life her great grandchildren of whom there were 22, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents Alonza & Claudia Fodrey, her brother and two sisters, an infant son, her first husband, Murray James Whitley and second husband Vaughn Ormel Purser.  First and foremost she loved her Church, Rock of Zion FWB, serving as organist. She was a member of the Degree of Pocohontas for 53 years, once active in Bayboro Chapter of Eastern Star 26 years.  As she was a cancer survivor, Relay for Life was one of her loves. As a strong woman of faith she also was a supporter of The Gideons International. Being legally blind for 17 years she supported the Lions organization for the blind.  Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Bryan and Rev. David Pierce officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. Gene Ashton Purvis

Mr. Gene Ashton Purvis, age 79, a resident of 362 Riverview Street, Belhaven died Tuesday February 26, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.  A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday February 28, 2008 at the Belhaven Community Cemetery officiated by Rev. Steve Green.  Mr. Purvis was born in Belhaven on November 21, 1928, son of the late Julius H. and Sophronia Topping Purvis. He was a 1945 graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School in Belhaven. He served his country as a Communications Technician 2nd Class, 1950 to 1954, in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Following his military service, Mr. Purvis attended Davidson College from 1945 to 1947. He earned his BS Degree from East Carolina University in 1950, a MA Degree from East Carolina in 1956 and continued his PhD studies at UNC/Chapel Hill and the University of Northern Colorado. Mr. Purvis was a teacher at John A. Wilkinson High School from 1954 to 1957 and served as their principal from 1957 until 1961. Following his high school teaching career, he transferred to Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, as an Associate Professor from 1961 until his retirement in 1988.  Survivors include a brother: Julius Henry Purvis, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Belhaven; a niece: Julie P. Robinson and her son Casey, both of Durham.  Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven is serving the Purvis family.  (Washington Daily News (Washington, NC) – Thursday, February 28, 2008)
