William Thomas Radcliffe
HAYES - William Thomas Radcliffe, 84, passed away on Jan. 5, 1997, at Walter Reed Convalescent Center in Gloucester. He was born in Belhaven, N.C., lived in Newport News most of his life and moved to Hayes in 1985. He retired from the Mariners' Museum in 1977 after 43 years of service, most of them as head of the Photographic Department. He was a member of Hilton Baptist Church in Newport News, its Sunday school and Hilton Happy Hearts, having previously served as a member of the Deacon Board. Survivors include his wife, Clara Herring Radcliffe; two sons and their wives, William Jr. and Peggy Radcliffe of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jerry K. and Carol Radcliffe of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Thomas Hornkohl of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Linda and Kenneth Behnken of Newport News; one sister and one brother of Newport News; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home, Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, in the chapel of W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack A. Lawson Jr. officiating. Josephine Davis Galvin Raftery
Josephine Davis Galvin Raftery, 88, Bushnell and formerly of Englewood, died Dec. 13, 2000. She was born in Pinetown, N.C., and lived most of her life in Englewood. She moved to Bushnell in 1984 from Englewood. She was a licensed practical nurse and also worked as a food service worker with the Sarasota County Public School System. She was a member of Church of God. Survivors include a daughter, Ellen G. George of Bushnell; four sons, Edward Galvin and John Galvin, both of Bushnell, Dale Galvin of Englewood, and Jerry Galvin of Lake Panasoffkee; a brother, Willard Davis of Cocoa; a sister, Elizabeth Martinez of Naples; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. William Harvey Ramsey
William Harvey Ramsey, 79, Lake Dot Circle, Orlando, died Wednesday, Aug. 12. Mr. Ramsey was a plasterer. Born in Washington, N.C., he moved to Central Florida in 1957. He was a member of Cathedral Church of St. Luke. He was an Army veteran. Survivors: son, William H. Jr., Nashville, N.C.; daughters, Elizabeth R. Howlett, St. Petersburg, Anne Alpert, Maitland; companion, Delora Mark, Orlando; sister, Margaret R. Rhodes, Washington; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Marjorie Lee Cutler Randall
HAMPTON, VA - Mrs. Marjorie Lee Randall, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2006. She was born to the late William and Eliza Cutler in Bath N.C. Marjorie was a member of Church of Christ in Bath N.C. She enjoyed gardening and music, especially playing the harmonica. Marjorie was preceded in death by her son Bernard A. Chrismon, and five brothers and one sister. Mrs. Randall is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years; William Randall, and a daughter; Rebecca Michalski and husband Walter, There are four grandchildren; Chris Chrismon and wife Kimberly, Liza Kane and husband Noel, Todd Holdcraft and wife Kelly, and Rebecca E. Michalski, and five great grandchildren Benjamin Chrismon, Rebekah Chrismon, Trent Holdcraft, Carson Holdcraft, and Riley Elizabeth Kane, and her many beloved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home and services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home. Haughton F. Randolph, Sr.
Haughton F. Randolph, Sr., a retired vice president of sales for the Ohio River Co., died Wednesday at the Poydras Home. He was 91. Mr. Randolph was born in Washington, N.C., and lived in New Orleans for the past 40 years. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., and attended Tulane University. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Margaret H. Randolph; three sons, Chris, Frank and Haughton F. Randolph Jr.; a daughter, Anne von Kuhn; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave. Burial will be in Washington, N.C. Leon Rhodes Randolph, III
Leon Rhodes Randolph, III, affectionately known as “Trey,” transitioned to his eternal home on Monday, March 27, in Rowan Community Hospital in Salisbury, North Carolina. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Temple of Jesus Christ with pastor Sterling Tripp serving as eulogist. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. “Trey” was born on June 30, 1953, to Mary Smitherman Randolph Dunn and the late Leon Rhodes Randolph, Jr. Trey’s early childhood educational experiences were received through the former City of Washington public schools. He also attended the Governor’s Advancement School at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He graduated with honors from Washington High School. Trey did further studies at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. During his early childhood, he developed a love of music and expressed that love as he excelled in playing the alto and tenor saxophone. Trey played with several bands as their lead saxophonist as a young adult. He was a sports enthusiast, loving the sport of football, active in Boy Scouts of America. He joined Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age where he was junior steward, member of the Gospel and Chancel Choirs Sunday school, member of the Historical Organ Committee and played the saxophone. He later became a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Lexington, North Carolina, where he faithfully sang in the choir. “Trey” faithfully served his country in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman from 1974-1978. In 1978, he was united in marriage to Ruth McLaren. To this union, three beautiful daughters were born. He was preceded in death by his father, his paternal grandparents, Leon and Naomi Taylor Randolph, and maternal grandparents, Al and Cora Smitherman. To mourn his loss are his wife, Ruth McLaren of New York; three daughters, Heather, Kim and Taylor; two grandsons, Tristan and Isaiah; his mother and stepfather, Mary S. Dunn and Dr. Samuel Dunn; stepmother, Mildred Keyes Randolph; mother-in-law, Katherine McLaren; four aunts, Margaret Randolph King, Alberta Madison Carter, Carrie B. Randolph, Betty B. Cecil Allen Rascoe
AHOSKIE - Cecil Allen Rascoe, 52, of the 1000 block of N. Academy St., died June 15, 2002, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Born in Beaufort County, N.C., he was the owner and operator of Cecil A. Rascoe Heating and Air Condition. Mr. Rascoe was a member of Brantley's Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie. Survivors include his wife, Susan Sullivan Rascoe; a daughter, Allison Rascoe of Ahoskie; a son, Cecil Allen Rascoe Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; his mother, Myrtle Olease Allen Rascoe of Pantego, N.C.; four sisters, Peggy Hare of Murfreesboro, N.C., Marie Reed of Frisco, N.C., Mary Arbeene of Cabot, Ark., Lori Tetterton of Aurora, N.C.; and a brother, William Rascoe of Pantego. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Garrett Funeral Home by the Rev. Jimmy Ward. Burial will be in Stoney Creek Cemetery. Patricia Jo Ratcliff
Patricia Jo Ratcliff, age 53, a resident of 5513 Botany Bay Drive, Raleigh and formerly of Pantego, died Thursday morning, March 22, 2007 at her home. Funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday March 24, 2007 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Rev. Woodrow Freeze, III. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Miss Ratcliff was born in Beaufort County on July 21, 1953, daughter of Argil Windley and the late Joseph Ephraim Ratcliff, Sr. She graduated from Pungo Christian Academy and East Carolina University. She worked as a letter carrier at the North Ridge Station in Wake County from 1988 until her health began to decline. She is survived by her mother, Argil Ratcliff of Pantego; her brother: Joseph E. Ratcliff, Jr. and his wife, Valaurie of Harrisville, WV; her nieces and nephews: Rachel, Kassie, Hali, Patricia, Joseph, Christopher, Zoe and Josiah Patrick. The family will receive friends 2:00-3:00 PM on Saturday prior to the service at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home of her mother, Argil Ratcliff, 1205 Wilkinson Station Road, Pantego. Zeno Olen Ratcliff, Jr.
PANTEGO - Mr. Zeno Olen Ratcliff, Jr., age 80, a resident of 1564 Terra Ceia Rd., Pantego, NC died Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 25, 2001 at the Hebron United Methodist Church of Pantego with Rev. Patricia Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens of Washington. Mr. Ratcliff was born in Beaufort County on March 21, 1921, son of the late Zeno O. Ratcliff, Sr. and the late Mary Spruill Ratcliff. He attended Washington High School. He completed his High School studies with the class of 1939 at Mars Hill College and continued his education there until he transferred to North Carolina State College where he earned a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Economics. He then served his country during World War II in the Pacific with the U.S. Army. On August 3, 1952 he married the former Marjorie Tolan who survives. In 1947 Mr. Ratcliff organized the Beaufort Co. Young Republican Club which he served that year and 1956-1957 as President. He was Co-Chairman of the National Young Republican Agricultural Committee 1955-1957, Treasurer of North Carolina Young Republican Federation in 1955, recipient of Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year for Beaufort Co. in 1955, a member of the Beaufort Co. Republican Executive Committee for many years spanning between 1961 and 1990, a member of the Beaufort Co. Election Board from 1969 to 1972 which he served as Chairman from 1972 to 1975. Mr. Ratcliff was a member of N.C. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee from 1956 to 1958, which he served as Chairman 1958 to 1959 and served as Assistant Deputy Administrator of Price Supports with the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1959 to 1960. He was President of Zeno O. Ratcliff, Inc. a family farming business, since 1961 served as Board Member of Beaufort County Hospital for five years, a Board Member of Pungo District Hospital for seven years. Mr. Ratcliff was initiated into N.C. State University Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor Society of Agriculture in 1972, was a member of N.C. State University Board of Trustees 1973 to 1977 and held position of President of Beaufort Co. Farm Bureau 1980 to 1984. He was a member and past President of Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club, Member and Chairman of Official Board of Hebron United Methodist Church where he was a dedicated member and Superintendent of Sunday School for many years until his death. He was chairman of the Broad Creek Drainage District since 1976 and served on the North Carolina Agricultural Finance Authority for two terms starting in 1987. Surviving along with Mr. Ratcliff's wife of the home are one son: Zeno O. "Sandy" Ratcliff, III of Washington one daughter Cyndi Ratcliff of Atlanta, GA; and one sister Frances J. Janice Brooks Reddick
Mrs. Janice Brooks Reddick of Brooklyn, N.Y., and formerly of Bath, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, in New York. A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in Gateway Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Bath, with Bishop L. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Reddick was the daughter of the late Bishop Allen E. Brooks and Irene F. Brooks. She was a graduate of the former Belhaven High School. She was an active member of Antioch Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Brooklyn, N.Y. Survivors include two sons, Juan Reddick and Malcom Kemp, both of New York; and one daughter, Tierra Smith of New York. Michael Devern Reddick
Mr. Michael Devern Reddick, 51, of 7348 Terra Ceia Road, Pantego, died Friday, March 23, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Macedonia Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Pantego, with Elder Donald Peartree officiating. Burial will follow in Broad Creek Cemetery, Pantego. Mr. Reddick was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 23, 1955. He was the son of Blanche Brown Reddick and Arthur Thomas Reddick. He graduated from Pantego High School and did further studies at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Survivors include four sisters, Martha O’Neal, Ella Gaynor, Carol Spruill and Helen R. Cutler, all of Pantego; and one brother, Arthur Reddick Jr. of Pantego. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the home. Raymond Richard Reece
Mr. Raymond Richard Reece, age 61, a resident of 123 Cedar Circle, Washington, NC died Tuesday August 21, 2007 at the Beaufort County Hospital. Mr. Reece was born in Hamilton County, Ohio on December 21, 1945 son of the late C. M. Reece and the late Ruth Walker Reece. He was a graduate of St. Bernard High School in Cincinnati, OH. Locally Mr. Reece worked as a service technician with Flanders Filters until his battle with cancer forced his retirement. Mr. Reece is survived by his life companion: Tony Lotta of the home; a sister: Janice Campbell of Henderson, NC; five brothers: J.C. Reece of Phoenix, AZ, Terry Reece of Cincinnati, OH, Rick Reece of Seattle, WA, Greg Reece of Washington, NC and John Reece of Chicago, IL and seven loving nieces and nephews. Raymond Harold Reel
Mr. Raymond Harold Reel, 76, of Bath, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Britthaven of Washington. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Clair’s Church of Christ, Bath. Mr. Reel was born in Pitt County. He served in the Army in Japan during the war crime’s trials. He was married to Maxine V. Reel, who survives. He was employed with Riddle Brothers for 40 years. He retired in 1991 and moved to Bath. He was a member of St. Clair’s Church of Christ, Bath. Survivors include two sons, Stephen H. Reel of Raleigh, and George H. Reel of Winterville; one sister, Opal R. Dixon of Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Saturday in the fellowship hall of St. Clair’s Church of Christ, Bath, following the memorial service. Wilma Ruth Buys Rees
Wilma Ruth Buys Rees, age 66, of 175 Edgewater Rd., Washington, died Friday, July 13, 2007. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Mrs. Rees was born July 19, 1940 to the late William Day Buys and Marjorie Della Dawe Buys who survives and on December 3, 1960, she married Robert Allen Rees who preceded her in death on April 26, 1973. She was a graduate of Farmington High School in Farmington, CT, served in the United States Marine Corps, graduated from Central Connecticut University with a B.S. in Science, was a director of a group home for the handicapped, traveled extensively, was an avid quilter and was a member of the Pamlico Quilters Guild. Survivors include her mother, Marjorie Dawe Buys of Washington; one daughter, Colleen M. deBres and husband Arthur of Manistee, MI; one son, Michael Rees and wife Tammy of Washington; two brothers, William T. Buys and wife Barbara of Harwinton, CT, Seth A. Buys and wife Tanya of Waldron, AK; two sisters, Karen B. Smith and husband Glen of Waldron, AK, Martha B. Hika and husband Eugene of Fort Myers, FL and five grandchildren: Robert Mickle, Arthur L. deBres III, Michael J. Rees, Lila Ruth deBres and Daniel William deBres. Faye Gaskins Reid
GRANDY - One extraordinary lady finished her journey on July 24, 2006 to begin a new one. Born in Beaufort, N.C., she was a retired real estate agent and a master gardener. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Gaskins. She also enjoyed fishing and golfing. Faye is survived by her husband, Ed Reid; son, Woody Hudson (Lydia); three daughters, Shelby Wilson (Glenn), Janet Salmon (Frank), and Lois Walton (Gary); two sisters, Evelyn O’Dell and Rae Spencer (George); eight grandchildren, Jacob and Peter Hudson, Jereme Wilson, Jennifer Moneypenny, Brittany and Blake Salmon, Russell Adam Johnson, and Melissa Car; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler, and Olivia; and four nephews, Johnny O’Dell, Timmy, Bobby, and Hoyt Spencer. A Celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2006, in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, with Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. Ernest Roland Renwick, Sr.
Mr. Ernest Roland Renwick Sr., 62, of 2699 N.C. Highway 45 North, Pantego, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006. A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in West Belhaven Church of Christ with Thom Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery, Pantego. Jos. Monzon, Ronnie Russ, Willie Williams Jr., Marshall Marslender, Michael Marslender, Shane Hubers, Hugh Watson and Joe Hodges will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Renwick was born July 30, 1944, the son of the late Roland F. and Elsie Carson Renwick. On Jan. 14, 1967, he married the former Donna Hollister, who survives. He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as a mechanic. He was a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Ponzer Ruritan Club. He was a member of West Belhaven Church of Christ. Survivors include one son, Ernest R. Renwick Jr. of Sasebo, Japan; one daughter, Karen E. Renwick of Albany, N.Y.; one sister, Sally Sanford of Adams, N.Y.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Guy Gerard Renzi
BELHAVEN - Mr. Guy Gerard Renzi, age 49, a resident of 342 Mill Street, Belhaven, died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at his home. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2006 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, conducted by Rev. Allen Harmon. Guy was born on October 21, 1956 in Manhattan, N.Y. He was the son of Margaret Donnelly Renzi of Connecticut. He is survived by his life partner, Cherylee Hack and her son, Matthew Hack of the home and her daughter and son-in-law, April and Joseph Garcia, CT. Guy is survived by his brother, Henry Renzi and his wife, Annie Renzi of Connecticut; his three sisters, Donna Sario and Judy Staabe and her husband, Ed Staabe all from Connecticut, Dawn Renzi of Florida. He was the uncle to four nephews, two nieces, two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Guy was “loved by many and an instant friend to all.” Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven is serving the Renzi family. Leon Clark Respass, Jr.
Mr. Leon Clark Respass Jr., 62, of 3387 Christian School Road, Pinetown, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at the Beaufort County Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with pastor David Linton Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Douglas Boyd, Todd Boyd, Mario CeCe, John Gregory Jr., Wayne Everett and Asa Everett. Mr. Respass was born in Beaufort County on July 16, 1943. He was the son of Leon Clark Respass Sr. and the late Grace Boyd Respass. He was a lifelong resident of Beaufort County and a graduate of Bath High School. He was a retired farmer and a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ, Bath Church of God and Angels on Earth. In addition to his father, Leon Clark Respass Sr. of Pinetown, survivors include two sons, Michael Clark Respass and Victore Leon Respass, both of Washington; three daughters, Victoria Lee Respass, Veronica Grace Ann Respass and Virginia Ann Respass, all of Washington; one sister, Rita R. Woolard of Atlanta, Ga.; one adopted brother, James Russell Boyd; and two grandchildren, Samuel Langley and Sarah Grace Respass. A graveside funeral service with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a retired farmer. Mr. Respass was a member of the Masonic Orr Lodge #104 of Washington, the Sudan Temple of New Bern and a past member of the Black Land Farmers Association. Survivors include his daughter, Rita Woolard and husband, Terry of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, James Russell Boyd and wife, Phyllis of Washington and Linwood Respass of Bath; six grandchildren, Jessica Woolard, Victoria Respass, Veronica Respass, Virginia Respass, Victore Respass and Michael Respass and wife, Angie; one great-grandchild, Sarah Grace Respass; two special nephews, Douglas Boyd and Todd Boyd; and caretakers, Calvin Jean Williams, Betty Reddick, Joyce Razor, Thelma Booth, and Bessie Peartree. Mrs. Respass was a proud homemaker and was a member of Pinetown Church of Christ and the church’s Bible study group. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Richard Poorman, Jr. and his wife, Jeanette of Pinetown and Michael E. Poorman and his wife, Wanda of Pinetown; one daughter, Kathy Jackson-Sharp and her husband, David of Louisville, KY and 10 grandchildren, Ricky Poorman, Bryan Poorman, Joseph Poorman, Christine Runfola, Tonya Davis, Andrea Dixon, Allison Mallison, Brad Jackson, Justin Jackson and Laura Jackson and 10 great-grandchildren. CHOCOWINITY - Mr. Ralph Linwood Respess, 61, a resident of 744 E. Bayside Dr., died early Sunday at Beaufort County Hospital. Mr. Respess was born July 12, 1935 in Terra Ceia the son of the late Jesse Bernard and Ethel Bowen Respess, he was a graduate of the Pantego High School Class of 1954. Mr. Respess later married the former Geraldine Cox in 1955 who survives. He was a former farmer and owner of Respess Tractor and Equipment Co. and also the co-owner of Country Boys Auction Company. Mr. Respess was a member of the First Christian Church of Washington, Masonic Orr Lodge #104, a member of the Shriners, Sudan Temple of New Bern, The Redmen of Washington, the Chocowinity Ruritans, the Washington Moose Lodge, the Auctioners Association, and was a past member of the Washington Jaycees. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Ralph L. "Bud" Respess, Jr. of Washington, and Gregory Bernard "Greg" Respess of Chocowinity; two grandchildren, Shaun Linwood Respess and Courtney Rae Respess. Other survivors include one sister, Dorothy Louise Jackson of Terra Ciea; two brothers, Malvin R. and Van W. Respess also of Terra Ceia. Mr. Van Washington Respess, age 71, a former resident of Pantego, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. Respess was born on April 25, 1933, son of the late Jesse and Ethel Respess. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he proudly served his country as a pilot in the United States Air Force. He was a former community grocery store operator in the Terra Ceia community, the organist at Terra Ceia Church of Christ for several years and had an avid interest in playing the accordion. William Wallace Respess
Mr. William “Wallace” Respess, age 78, a resident of 5739 Christian School Road, Pantego, died Wednesday evening, February 14, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday February 17, 2007 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Ray West. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. His grandchildren: Clay Respess, Charly Respess, Alex Haddock, Will Respess, Cameron Meador and Peyton Morris will serve as pallbearers. Rhonda Respess, David Hrupsa and Billy Snow will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Respess was born in the Terra Ceia Community of Beaufort County on December 5, 1928, son of the late John Henry Respess and Elizabeth Bowen Respess. On December 24, 1946, he married the former Hilda Everett who survives. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a retired farmer and co-owner of Respess Trucking, Inc. Wallace was a member of Terra Ceia Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for a number of years. Wallace had a passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He loved to talk with people, was an avid Ford racing fan, loved to read, travel and eat peanut butter and chocolate. He loved life and spending time with his family. Wallace was a free spirit who knew no stranger and has left a void in many lives that can’t be filled. In addition to his wife, Hilda of the home, he is survived by his two sons: William Wallace Respess, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Hickory; Charles Keith Respess and his wife, Sally of Pantego; his two daughters: Martha Respess Morris and her husband, Donnie of Bath; Robin Respess Haddock and her husband, Dickie of Grimesland; his grandchildren: William Wallace Respess, III, Catherine Maria Respess, John Clay Respess and his wife, Bonnie, Charles Keith Respess, Jr., Cameron Morris Meador and her husband, Joe, Peyton Ashe Morris, Robin Alexander Haddock and Nicholas Christian Haddock. BELHAVEN - John Edward Rhem, 82, of the Ponzer Community, died Thursday, Aug. 15, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Born in the Edward Community of Beaufort County Aug. 11, 1914, he was the son of the late John Henry and Gertrude White Rhem. He retired in 1980 after working for many years as a merchant seaman with Exxon Oil Co. He was a member of the Mount Olive Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Wallace Rhem; two sons: Larry E. Rhem of Washington and Mike W. Rhem of Belhaven; a daughter, Linda R. Buckner of Kitty Hawk; a sister, Ruth R. Billie Jean Hayes Rich
Mrs. Billie Jean Hayes Rich, age 75, a resident of 448 East Bayside Drive, Chocowinity, N.C. died at her home on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. Mrs. Rich was born on December 30, 1931, in Beaufort County, the daughter of the late Allison Benjamin Hayes and Lena Mixon Hayes. Mrs. Rich graduated from Aurora High School. She later moved to Texas where she worked with Rockwell International. Mrs. Rich was employed for 25 years retiring in 1985. Upon retirement she and her husband Ray returned to Beaufort County. She loved, and was loved by, her many friends and neighbors at Bayside Shores. She is survived by a daughter, Lynn Clayton and husband Danny of Belhaven and one son James T. Hudson and wife Cheri of Richardson, Texas. Two brothers, Heber Hayes of Aurora, N.C. and A.B. Hayes of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Ruth Edwards of Washington, N.C., Ruby Bell of Morehead City, N.C. and Margaret Jernigan of Chapel Hill, N.C.; six grandchildren, Nicole Clayton Prince and husband Ruffin, Matthew Hudson, Michelle Hudson, Lisa Hudson, Amanda Hudson and Nathan Hudson and one great-grandchild, Madison Prince. Etta Lucille ''Lucy'' DuRant Rickett, 80, of the 4900 block of Killam Ave., died Feb. 16, 1999, in Norfolk. Born in Washington, N.C., she was predeceased by her first husband, Preston C. DuRant Sr. and her second husband, Teague Rickett. She retired as a self-employed antiques dealer. She attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and had been the music director for Ghent Methodist Mission during the 1950s and 1960s. She is survived by two sons, John D. DuRant and his wife, Leah, of Braddock Heights, Md., and Steve J. DuRant and his wife, Nita, of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Preston C. DuRant III, David DuRant, Edward DuRant, John D. DuRant Jr., Sylvia L. DuRant, Jason S. DuRant and Cynthia M. Bond; two great-grandchildren, Haley DuRant and Madison D. Bond; daughter-in-law, Lois DuRant; and a constant loving companion, Charles Mosier. She was also predeceased by her son, Preston C. Shirley Louise Riddick, 71, of the 900 block of W. 26th St., passed away Nov. 20, 2006, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born Aug. 17, 1935, in Belhaven, N.C., and attended Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk. She retired in 1996 from Sentara Leigh Hospital after 40 years of service. She was predeceased by her father, Nathaniel Harper and step-father, Earl Bradshaw. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Gene R. Riddick Sr.; one son, Gene R. Riddick, Jr.; her mother, Ernestine Howard Bradshaw; two sisters, Earlene Cobb and Cecelia Ann Harris; two brothers, Ray C. Bradshaw and Clifford Howard Bradshaw; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. William “Floyd” Reddick, 58, of 154 Water Road, Pantego, died at his home Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007. Burial will follow at the Reddick family cemetery in Pantego. Mr. Reddick was born Sept. 14, 1949 in Washington County. He was the son of the late Gertrude Young Reddick and Joe Reddick. He attended the public schools of Beaufort County and was employed in construction. He was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in Pantego. On July 3, 2000 he was married to Theresa R. Reddick who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Robert Reddick of Greenville and Faithful Fulcher of the home; two sisters, Virginia Taylor and Minnie Flynn; one brother, Jimmie Reddick and three grandchildren. Lela Waters Riley, 77, passed away quietly in her sleep early Wednesday morning. Mrs. Riley retired from the Telephone Company after 35 years of service. Mrs. Riley was born in Pinetown, N.C. She attended Christ First Community Fellowship Church in Norfolk. Mrs. Riley was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and CWA Retired Member Club. Mrs. Edna Davenport Robbins, 80, of 18981 US Highway 264 East, Yeatesville Community of Pinetown, died Friday, December 9, 2005 at the Beaufort County Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM today at Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ with Glenn Brickhouse officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mrs. Robbins’ nephews, Mike Davenport, Wes Davenport, Al Davenport, Charlie Davenport, Jr., Joey Taylor and Keith Taylor will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Robbins was born November 8, 1925 in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Charles Wesley Davenport and Lillian Callis Woolard Davenport. On December 16, 1946, she married Sam Robbins, who preceded her in death in 1973. Mrs. Robbins was a graduate of Bath High School and was a retired registered nurse and family nurse practitioner. DOShe received her nurses training from Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, NC and the University of Maryland. She received specialized training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and earned her FNP from East Carolina University. She found great joy in helping others throughout her 55 years in the nursing field. She was a member of Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ and the Beaufort County Retired Nurses Association. Ellen Mayer Roberson, 53, of 235 East Main Street, Washington, NC died on Monday, November 27, 2006 at the home of her parents, Baron and Kathleen Mayor of 102 Willows Court, Washington, NC. She graduated from Danvers High School and East Carolina University with a degree in Art Education and a minor in art history, concentrating in the Renaissance period. She took great pride in being a conservative capitalist graduate of the East Carolina School of Art. Ellen had a passion for working with children. During her life she developed, managed, and taught in several childcare facilities in Greenville, NC. Her entrepreneurial legacy is demonstrated by her two companies; Special Shapes and Ellen’s Studio. She left her mark on the landscape by creating custom brick sculptures for businesses and homes throughout the nation. Through Special Shapes she became one of the most sought after brick sculptors in the southeast United States. Ellen’s Studio combined her business skills, love for children, and artistic talents. Hundreds benefited from Ellen and the studio as she helped children and adults create art with their hands and own imagination. Her trademark Noah’s Arks, bunnies, and custom figurines are shared in homes across the world. Each of her pieces are treasures and each individual owning one shares in Ellen’s life and love. Ellen is survived by her husband, Bobby E. Roberson; son Lt. Jason S. Roberson, USN and wife Heather; and daughter Kathleen Pierson Roberson, Greenville, NC; her parents Baron and Kathleen Mayer of Washington, NC and her siblings: Marion “Marty” Mayer of Middleburg, FL; Fred Mayer of Charlotte, NC; Nancy Nixon of Rocky Mount, NC; Bill Mayer of Laurens, SC; and their families. Mrs. Evelyn Jo Roberson, 71, of 2532 Slatestone Road, Washington, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. Mr. George Reddick Roberson, Jr., age 79, a former resident of East Second Street, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. Mr. Roberson was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church where he served as an usher and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was a member of the Tau Tribe #18, Improved Order of Redmen. Survivors include a brother, H. Clyde Roberson and his wife, Miriam, of Washington; two sisters, Opal Ross and her husband, Herb, of Tarboro, Nan R. Leroy Roberson
Leroy Roberson, 78, of Virginia Beach, passed away Sept. 3, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Washington, N.C., he was self-employed as an electrical contractor for many years. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Kempsville Church of Christ and was always willing to serve in whatever capacity he was needed. Besides his family and church, his greatest passion in life was his golf. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marie Roberson; two children, Ken Roberson and Brenda Wray, along with four grandsons. He is also survived by one brother, James Roberson of California; three sisters, Audrey Edwards of Norfolk, Muriel Gurganus of Richmond and Glennis Andreoli of Washington, N.C. Anne Waterfield Roberts, 86, of the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1993, in Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community. Mrs. Roberts was born in Washington, N.C., on Oct. 15, 1907. She was formerly of Virginia Beach. She was a member of Beachlawn Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, and was past matron of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 75 of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her parents, Zola Moore and Allie Woodhouse Moore. She was the widow of Noland Roberts. Survivors include three daughters, Beth Simmons Groll of Cape Cora, Fla., and Mary J. Mrs. Hilda Johnson Roberts, age 92, a resident of 305 Grimes Road, Washington, died Wednesday morning December 6, 2006 at Beaufort County Hospital. Mrs. Roberts was born on January 9, 1914 in Bladenboro, NC, daughter of the late Elias Judson Johnson and Lucy Lewis Johnson. She married Rufus Benjamin Roberts on July 25, 1932 in Emporia, VA. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1988. She was employed with Guy T. Swindell Jewelers as a sales associate and a bridal consultant. Mrs. Roberts was a volunteer in the local school system as a lecturer on flowers and gardens. She was a charter member and former president of the Twilight Garden Club, a member of Woman’s Bible Class, the Sunshine Sewing Club, Pamlico Senior Citizens Club, Primetimers, and Fun and Fellowship. Mrs. Roberts joined the First United Methodist Church in 1939 and was a member of United Methodist Women. She has served as an assistant Sunday School teacher of the Vera Broome class of which she was a long-standing member. She is survived by her two daughters: Hilda Roberts Merritt of Washington, Susan Roberts Lanier and her husband, Gene of Greenville; her two sons: Rufus Benjamin “Ben” Roberts, Jr. of the home and Thomas Johnson “Tom” Roberts of Clayton; her two grandchildren: Leigh Lanier Hrazdira and her husband, Ivan of New York, NY; Nicole Lanier Burnette and her husband, Hunter of Greenville; her four great-granddaughters: Olivia McLean Burnette, Ashley Martin Burnette, Katherine Alexandra Hrazdira and Lily Lanier Hrazdira. James F. Robinson
James F. Robinson, 78, born in Washington, N.C., on Sept. 15, 1919, died in the intensive care unit at Maryview Hospital on Nov. 13, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Sadie Robinson; his son, Michael Robinson; and two brothers, Norwood Robinson and Corbett Robinson. During World War II, James served his country as a petty officer of the U.S. Navy. A retired salesman, he continued to work until his death. Previous employers include the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Prices Inc. and Gaulthey. Dedicated to his work, as demonstrated through unbending loyalty and service, his most current place of employment was Wal-Mart of Chesapeake. On March 6, 1948, Mr. Rodman married the former Helen Mishoe, who preceded him in death, October 21, 2006. Mr. Rodman was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the Ramblers Supper Club. He was a member of the first City of Washington Recreation committee. Mr. Rodman was a member of the Washington Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank, past treasurer of Washington Lion’s Club, and former member of the Tranters Creek Hunting Club. A native of Washington, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Marsha Roebuck. He was also predeceased by his wife, Annebelle and his brother, Haywood. Lottie Riddick Romich
Mrs. Lottie Riddick Romich, age 95, a resident Autumnfield Rest Home and a former resident of 580 East Water Street, Belhaven, NC died Saturday February 3, 2007 at the Pungo District Hospital. A graveside funeral will be held 11:00 AM Monday February 5, 2007 at the Belhaven Community Cemetery officiated by Mike Isbell. Mrs. Romich was born Belhaven on September 8, 1911 daughter of the late Willis Smith Riddick and the late Mary Ellen Weisiger Riddick. She graduated from the former Belhaven High School and continued her education at Louisburg College where she received her business degree. Mrs. Romich married John Allison Romich who preceded her in death in 1952. She worked in retail for J.D. Dawson Wholesale Company in Belhaven for many years until her retirement. Mrs. Romich was a member of the First Christian Church of Belhaven. Survivors include a daughter: Mary Ellen Blythe and her husband Ron of Kill Devil Hills and a son: John Allen Romich and his wife Gayle of Norfolk, VA. Mrs. Romich was preceded in death by a sister Hannah Windley and two brothers: George Riddick and Jack Riddick. Viola Marslender Roscoe
Mrs. Viola Marslender Roscoe, 72, formerly of 1406 Harrington St., Washington, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital, Kinston. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Pamlico Memorial Gardens with Craig Godley officiating. Mrs. Roscoe was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 11, 1935. She was the daughter of Hallie Tetterton Marslender of Swan Quarter and the late Carlton William Marslender. She was a graduate of the former J.A. Wilkinson High School in Belhaven and continued her education at Parkview Hospital in Rocky Mount, where she earned her registered nursing degree. She was married to Edward Odell Roscoe Sr., who preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1996. She retired in November of 1997 from Beaufort County Hospital where she worked most of her career in the nursery area of the hospital. She was a member of the Church of Christ faith. Survivors include one son, Edward Roscoe Jr. of Chocowinity; three brothers, William L. Marslender of Portsmouth, Va., Melvin Ray Marslender of Fairfield, and Carlton “Carl” Marslender of Washington; and two sisters, Ella M. Nixon of Fairfield, and Helen M. King of Dunkirk, Md. Mr. Anthony Neal “Tony” Rose, 48, of Spring Hope, died Thursday, July 5, 2007. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, with pastor Phillip Jethro officiating. Burial will follow in Oddfellow Cemetery. Tim Rose, Robert Wilkins, Chad Thomas, Tommy Respass, Charles Wilkins, Wayne Pugh, Jon Scott Rose Jr. and Ronnie Murray will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Rose was born in Belhaven on Sept. 6, 1958. He was the son of Mary Elizabeth Pugh Rose and the late James Dare Rose Sr. He was a graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School. On Feb. 23, 1985, he married the former Judy Cone, who preceded him in death Jan. 15, 2007. He was a member of the Ferrell Fire Department in Nash County and was employed as operations manager with Waste Industries for 11 years. Survivors include two sons, William Neal Rose and Samuel Garrett Rose, both of Pinetown; three brothers, James Dare Rose Jr. of Douglas, Ga., Edward Dennis Rose of Belhaven, and Jon Scott Rose Sr. of Pinetown and one sister, Teresa Rose Ricks of Belhaven. Jean Nell Ross
Jean Nell Ross of Garwood Ave., a retired interior decorator, died March 24, 1994, in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Ross was born in Washington, N.C. She had retired from J.C. Penney Co., and attended Rock Church in Virginia Beach. Survivors include her husband, Marvin M. Ross; one son, Wayne Ross of Bear, Del.; two sisters, Reatha Turner of Norfolk and Maydel Wilkins of Leesburg, Fla.; one brother, Herman Whitaker of Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren, Heather Ross and Amy Ross, both of Bear, Del.; and several nieces and nephews. Vance L. Ross
KILL DEVIL HILLS - Vance L. Ross, 76, died Sept. 12, 2002, in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Ross, born in Bath, N.C., was a commercial fisherman until moving to Nags Head in the late 1940s. He managed the Colonial Inn Motel and Outer Banks Motor Lodge until he retired in 1988. After retirement, he went back to commercial fishing until his death. He was a charter member of the Nags Head Fire Dept. and served as president and vice president. He helped build the first fire station in Nags Head and served on the Board of Adjustments and Planning Board for Nags Head. He was the widower of Mildred Jarvis Ross. Mr. Ross is survived by two daughters, Amber Carawan and husband Cleron of Wanchese, N.C., April Buske and husband Paul of Kill Devil Hills; a son, Donnie Ross and wife Donna of Kill Devil Hills; a sister, Iva Lange of Elizabeth City; two brothers, Bobby Ross of Virginia Beach and Junior Ross of Columbus, Ga.; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, Sunday at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Herbert Hemmingway. William Joseph "Bill' Ross
Mr. William Joseph “Bill” Ross, 62, of 97 Chad Loop, Belhaven, died Friday, March 3, 2006 at the Beaufort County Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at St. Clairs Church of Christ with H. Norman Miller and Craig Hagen officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Clairs Church of Christ Cemetery with military honors. Larry Cooke, A.W. Cooke, Gerald Cooke, Monte Morris, Harold Yert and Wayne Kennedy will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, March 6, 2006 at Hillside Funeral Service and other times at his home. Mr. Ross was born December 11, 1943 in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Charlie Ross and Narsissie Mae Cutler Ross. He grew up in Bath and was a graduate of Bath High School. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard in 1962 and served for five years. While assigned to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY, he met and married the former Carol A. McGuire on June 20, 1967. After his Coast Guard duty, he worked for Pan American Airlines at JFK Airport. Upon leaving Pan Am, Mr. Ross was employed as a Superintendent with the NYC Housing Authority, retiring in 1998 with 25 years service. Upon his return to North Carolina in 2000, he obtained his commercial fishing license and enjoyed fishing and crabbing every season. Survivors include his wife, Carol McGuire Ross and two sisters, Maggie R. Morris and Josephine Ross, both of Bath. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Alma Ross, Myrtle Ross Dotson and Malvina Ross McGowan and his brother, Charlie Gus Ross. Herman Noel Roth
Funeral services for Herman Noel Roth will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 21 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Garden. Mr. Roth died Tuesday, September 18, at the age of 76. The son of Isadore and Helen Roth, Herman was born in St. Louis, Missouri. With his father, he moved to Minnesota after the death of his mother. He graduated from Mechanic Arts High School, St. Paul, and in 1949 joined the Navy, serving as an electronics technician aboard the USS Telfair in the Pacific during the Korean War. A graduate of Macalester College, St. Paul, Herman completed graduate work in business at the University of Minnesota. He was an oil and gas accounting manager for Apache Corporation, an oil and gas exploration firm headquartered first in Minnesota and then in Denver, Colorado. Herman is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Charles, and his wife, Laura, Council Bluffs, Iowa; son, William, his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Bailey and Ben, Crystal, Minnesota. His faith, love for his family, love of classical music, years of community service and affection for his good dog, Babe, marked his life. He is a founding member of the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis, serving on the board as treasurer. In Colorado, he worked in St. Laurence Episcopal Church Outreach, a program providing food, wood and other assistance to families along the Highway 285 corridor stretching from the foothills of Denver to the base of Kenosha Pass. In Washington, Herman was a member of St. Peter’s chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, VFW Post 6088, and the Beaufort County Arts Council. Bertie Toler Rountree, 86, of the 1100 block of Flobert Drive, died Jan. 9, 1994, in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Rountree was born in Washington, N.C. She was a member of Westwood Hills Baptist Church. She was a loving and kind mother, grandmother and sister. Survivors include a daughter, Terry W. Gaskins and one son-in-law, Fritz Gaskins of Virginia Beach; five sisters, Lois T. Dougherty and Pat Tatka, both of Chesapeake, Leona T. Bundy of Aylett, Va., and Mary T. Boyd and Sudie Brice, both of Washington, N.C.; a brother, Dumay Toler of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren, Buzz Gaskins of Norfolk and Robbie and Debbie Gaskins, both of Chesapeake; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Dean Rouse, 54, of Crystal River, died Sunday (Aug. 21, 2005) at Munroe Regional Medical Center of Ocala. He was born in Washington, N.C., and came here 15 years ago from South Carolina. He was a heavy equipment operator and an Army veteran. He was a member of First Assembly of God of Homosassa. Survivors include his daughter, Jessie Dean Rouse, Cape Coral; a son, Michael, South Carolina; his mother and stepfather, Joyce and Jessie Young, Homosassa; and companion, Karen "Nicki" Brandenstein, Crystal River. Billy Ray Rowe
Mr. Billie Ray Rowe, 79, of 4880 Old Washington Road, died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at his home. Mr. Rowe was born May 10, 1928 in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Billie Matthew Rowe and Annie S. Cayton Rowe. On November 11, 1948, he married Helen April Dixon, who survives. He was a veteran of the US Navy. Mr. Rowe was retired from National Spinning Company with 18 years of service. He was exempt from the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department in Middlesex, NJ. Survivors include his wife, Helen Dixon Rowe; one son, Billie A. Rowe of Washington; four daughters, Brenda Tyer and her husband, Robert, Jr. of Washington, Linda Horton and her husband, Thomas of Ayden, Ealine Rowe of Indianapolis, IN, and Catherine “Cathy” Smith and her husband, Anthony of Ayden; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and his special friend, Henry C. Danny Ferrell Rowe
Mr. Danny Ferrell Rowe, age 52, a resident of 9959 US Hwy 17 South, Chocowinity died on Monday July 23, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital. Funeral services for the Rowe family will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday July 26, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington conducted by Pastor Tad Tankard. The following will serve as pallbearers: Chris Chesson, Jules Woodard, Jeremy Ward, Christopher Spain, Luther Harvey and Nathan Brinn. Mr. Rowe was born in Beaufort County on November 26, 1954 son of the late James Herbert Rowe and the late Peggy Joyce Ferrell and on December 5, 1998 he married Karen Lynn Wiggins who survives. Mr. Rowe paid tribute to his country by serving in the United States Army as an Aircraft Mechanic. Mr. Rowe retired as an airplane mechanic from NARF at Cherry Point in 1989 and he attended the Harvest Church In addition to his wife, Mr. Rowe is survived by one daughter: Patty Lynn Rowe of Bath; two step daughters: Nicole Stocks Chesson of Washington and Blair Elizabeth Stocks of the home, three brothers: James Larry Rowe of Richlands, John Michael Rowe of Petersburg, VA, Jamie Van Rowe of Marshall Islands; and one grandchild; Christopher Caleb Chesson. He was preceded in death by one daughter; Shannon Rae Rowe and one brother; Timothy Kelly Rowe. Ethel Lewis Rowe
Mrs. Ethel Lewis Rowe, 92, formerly of Blounts Creek, died on July 16, 2006 at Britthaven of Washington. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Oakdale Cemetery and will be conducted by minister Ray West. Mrs. Rowe was born Dec. 15, 1913, to the late Richard and Ellen Clark Lewis and married Jacob Farel Rowe Sr. on Jan. 15, 1936. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 7, 1966. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Merle Webb of Roswell, Ga.; a brother, Vernon Lewis; and her sister, Annie Bell Craddock. Mrs. Rowe was a member of First Church of Christ in Washington. Survivors include her son, Jacob Rowe Jr. of Chocowinity; daughter Reba Rowe of Alvin, Tx.; two brothers, Lloyd Lewis of Jacksonville and Linwood Lewis of Bradenton, Fla; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Charles W. Russ
Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Charles Wilson Russ died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997, at Cypress Fairbanks Hospital. Born in Washington, N.C., Nov. 5, 1915, the son of the late Charles Wilson Russ and Lillian McMasters Warren Russ, he is survived by his wife, Mary Kadlec Russ; his sister, Helena Russ Harris of Radford, Va.; his son, Charles Wilson Russ III, and wife, Betsy, of Virginia Beach; daughter, Carolyn Russ Wallis, and husband, Dave, of Cypress, Texas; a stepson, John Edward Morgan, and wife, Fredrica, of Virginia Beach; stepdaughter, Pattie-Sue Bissett Keene of Cypress; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Lt. Cmdr. Russ served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and World War II, retiring from the Naval Reserve with the rank of lieutenant commander Nov. 5, 1975. A former resident of Norfolk/Virginia Beach, where he was an active member of Thalia United Methodist Church, he moved to Northern Virginia, where he retired as a revenue officer with the Internal Revenue Service in 1980. Relocating to Merritt Island, Fla., he was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the U.S. Power Squadron and Grace United Methodist Church. Health needs led him to the Houston area in 1995, where he joined Lakewood United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at noon Monday with service following at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, N.C., with Dr. Jerry House of Lakewood United Methodist Church of Houston. Burial with military rites will be in the family site at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Friends and family will be received at the home of Charles Wilson Russ III from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Betty Miller Russell, 79, a homemaker, died Jan. 12, 1993, in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Russell was born in Washington, N.C., and was the widow of Clark Baker Russell.
