Carrie Tate Sadler
MAYSVILLE - Carrie Tate Sadler, 85, formerly of Swan Quarter, died January 20, at Britthaven Nursing Home of Jacksonville. Mrs. Sadler was a native of Beaufort County. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward Sadler, and her daughter, Christine Stotesberry. Surviving are four granddaughters: Carol S. Aman and Wanda S. Morton of Maysville, Lisa Stotesberry of Felda, Florida, and Susie Gibbs of Engelhard; and three grandsons: Marty Sadler of Maysville, Curtis and Ernie Stotesberry of Swan Quarter; 14 great-grandchildren; and her son-in-law, Roland Stotesberry of Swan Quarter. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 23, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Maysville with the Rev. George Packer officiating. Burial will be in the Dogwood Memorial Cemetery in Maysville. The family will receive friends at the home of Jack and Carol Aman in Belgrade. Emmett Darrell Sadler, Sr.
Mr. Emmett Darrell Sadler, Sr., age 82, a resident of 517 Schoolhouse Road, Belhaven, NC died Friday, November 24, 2006 at the Pungo District Hospital. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday November 28, 2006 at the Bethany United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Linda Rowe. Burial will follow in the Winsteadville Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Skip Mountcastle, Buddy Mountcastle, Donnie Loes, Carroll Selby, Timmy Selby and Cliff Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be David Davis, Greg Davis, Scottie Selby, Ronnie Loes, Gary Loes, Danny Selby, Frank Davis and Ben Selby. Mr. Sadler was born in Beaufort County on July 31, 1924 son of the late Jesse Sadler and the late Effie Carawan Sadler. He attended Beaufort and Carven County Schools and served his country in the Army during World War II. Mr. Sadler participated in the Campaign of Rhineland where he was wounded in action. He received a Purple Heart and a Combat infantry Badge ribbon with one Bronze Star. Mr. Sadler married the former Jackie Selby on May 8, 1949 who survives. He worked as a truck driver with Selby Land Concepts until his retirement in August of 2001. Mr. Sadler was a member of the Beaufort County Post 15 of the American Legion, a member of the Washington VFW Post 6088 and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Surviving along with Mr. Sadler’s wife of the home is a son: Emmett “Dee” Sadler, Jr. of Belhaven; a daughter: Jane S. Van Staalduinen and her husband Leonard of Greenville; a brother Royce Sadler of Bridgeton and two grandsons: Ben Van Staalduinen and James Michael Van Staalduinen both of Greenville. Henry M. Sadler
Mr. Henry M. Sadler, 81, of Newport News, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Newport News, Va., with Richard Pulsifer officiating. Burial will be private. Mr. Sadler was born in Washington, but moved early in his life to the Virginia Peninsula where he lived for 40 years. He was a graduate of Newport News High School. He served in the Navy for four years, where he was in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with One Star. He worked for NACA for 10 years and then spent 29 years in banking. He retired from the Bank of Virginia as executive vice president in 1985. He coached basketball, served on PTAs, worked with the Boy Scouts, the Rotarians, the Better Business Bureau and the Virginia College Fund. For many years he was chairman of the National Society to Prevent Blindness. He was married to Betty Sadler, who survives. Survivors include five children, Carol S. Contarino of Richmond, Va., Henry M. Sadler III of Hawaii, Mark S. Sadler of Roanoke, Va., William P. Sadler of Chesterfield, Va., and Karen K. Sadler of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home following the memorial service. Ruby Hopkins Sadler
Mrs. Ruby Hopkins Sadler, 65, of 174 Wells Ave., Washington, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at her home. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Belhaven Community Cemetery with pastor Ron Estes officiating. Wayne Hopkins, Stanley Hopkins, Wayne Sadler, Ben Windley, B.T. Quidley and Jimmy Coltrain will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Sadler was born May 13, 1941, to the late David and Blanch Foster Hopkins. On Sept. 4, 1962, she married William H. Sadler who preceded her in death on July 12, 2000. Mrs. Sadler was a homemaker, an ordained minister and was a member of River City Christian Center. Survivors include two daughters, Tammy Sadler Osnoe of Washington and Cynthia Sadler Radcliff of Bath; one son, William Randall Sadler Sr. of Washington; one brother, David Stanley Hopkins Jr. of Kill Devil Hills, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home at 174 Wells Ave., Washington. April 11, 1956-March 16, 2001Rajie A. Saleeby, 44, of Temecula died March 16. He was born in Washington, N.C., and was a regional sales manager. Mr. Saleeby served in the Navy and was a member of West Band Masonic Lodge 434 in Lewisville, N.C. Survivors include his wife, Roslea R. Saleeby; daughter, Katherine Elaine Saleeby of Temecula; sons, James Richard Saleeby and Nicholas Parker Saleeby of Temecula; and sister, Katherine Prescott of Greenville, N.C. Services were pending. Master Elgin Jerome Salisbury, 13, of 360 Turkey Trot Road, No. 1, Washington, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in The Assembly of The Children of God, Washington, with Elder James Beatty officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington. Master Salisbury was born in Pitt County on June 26, 1992. He was the son of Willa Smith Latham and Jerry Louis Salisbury and the stepson of Donnie Earl Latham. Survivors include three brothers, Michael Spruill, Quincy Spruill and Tyrell Salisbury, all of Washington; two sisters, Kishea Spruill and Tarsha Spruill, both of Washington, and his grandmother, Shirley Fleetwood of Richmond, Va. John Anthony Sanchez
Mr. John Anthony Sanchez, 54, of Washington, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007. A funeral will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. C.B. Gray officiating. Mildred Butler Sanderford
Mildred Butler Sanderford of Cary, NC, died August 16, 2007, at the age of 101. She was born in Chocowinity, the eldest daughter of Laura and Frank Butler, and grew up in nearby Washington, NC, where she was educated in the public schools before going on to North Carolina State College for Women (now UNC-G). A member of the class of 1927, she majored in English and education; taught school in Bath and Milton; and in 1927, married Everett C. Sanderford of Raleigh. In 1936, Mildred and Everett moved to Cary where they spent the rest of their lives. Both were devoted to family, church, and community. Mildred particularly valued formal education and life-long learning. She was a leader in Cary Woman’s Club and its early efforts at community beautification: some of the club’s plantings of flowering trees and shrubs still enhance the historic district. During WWII, she contributed to the war effort not just by helping with her victory garden and canning much of what she grew, but especially by returning to teaching. She was the first garden editor of The Cary News and a founding member of the Cary Garden Club. In 2002, the club honored her with a life membership in the Garden Club of North Carolina. She was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Cary and recently of Westwood Baptist Church. Her husband, Everett, her sister, Laura Meredith Benton, her brother, John Butler, and two sons-in-law, Harold McEntire and William Marley, preceded her in death. She is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Gruber and husband, Ira of Bellaire, TX, Everette Claire Marley of Cary, and Barbara McEntire of Cary; sister, Dorothy Wright of Washington and Hope Mills, NC and her sons; and 8 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild — all of whom will greatly miss her nurturing and love. Mildred’s family will receive friends at Westwood Baptist Church, 200 Westhigh St., Cary on Saturday morning, August 25, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin an hour later at the church with burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary. Mildred’s family wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. James Parsons for his humane practice of medicine; to Mary, Ruth, and Joanne for their many kindnesses in attending Mother; and to the staff of Mayview Convalescent Center and of Wake County Hospice for their care and wise guidance. Mrs. Lula Mae Bryant Sanders, 58, of 706 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Washington, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Word of Life Worship Center (formerly Mt. Sinia Church), Washington, with Bishop Aaron McCarter officiating. Burial will follow in Whitfield and Whitley Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. Sanders was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 8, 1948. She was the daughter of the late Catherine Bryant Dixon and Bennie Carter. She attended the Beaufort County schools. She was a day care provider with Tender Love Day Care, Washington. She was a member of Word of Life Worship Center, Washington. Survivors include one daughter, Jasmine Bryant of Chocowinity; five sons, Aaron Bryant of Chocowinity, Milton Bryant and Robert Bryant, both of Garner, and Thomas Bryant and Troy Century, both of Washington; her grandmother, Charlotte Roberson of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Evelyn Bragg Sapp
Evelyn Bragg Sapp, 77, a homemaker, died Nov. 24 at Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol Township. Mrs. Sapp was born in Washington, N. C., and lived in Bristol Borough for 50 years. During the 1950s, she operated a small restaurant in Bristol Borough for several years. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Bristol Borough and the Twilight Temple Lodge 106, Bristol Township. Her husband, William C. Sapp, died in 1983. She is survived by five daughters, Vivian Smith, Bertha Currington, Rosalie Sapp, Louise Ormond and Stephanie Young; two brothers; 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Burial was in Bristol Cemetery. Arrangements were made by P. Rosamond Gray, funeral director, Bristol Township. Mrs. Linda Heggie Satchel, 56, of 550 Mary St., Chocowinity, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Beech Grove FWB Church with pastor Paul Foxworth officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. Satchel was born in Beaufort County. She was married to Robert Satchel, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Beech Grove FWB Church, where she served on the stewards, mother board, trustee board and was a member of the choir. Survivors include one daughter, Penny Stokes of Winterville; two sons, Gregory Heggie of Charlotte, and Robert Cedric Satchel of Raleigh; four sisters, Chris Powell and Gloria Walker, both of Chocowinity, Brenda George of Vanceboro, and Teresa Chapman of Pinetown; one brother, Marion German of Chocowinity; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Charlie Eugene Satterthwaite, Jr.
Mr. Charlie Eugene Satterthwaite Jr., 67, of 222 Alleghany Road, Santee, S.C., and formerly of Belhaven, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at home. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Woodstock Free Will Baptist Church, Belhaven, with Elders Redden Leggett and Horace Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Satterthwaite was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 21, 1939. He was the son of the late Lillian S. Satterthwaite and Charlie Satterthwaite Sr. He attended and graduated from the Beaufort County schools. He retired from Golden “D” Meat Packing Company, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was first married to Velma Lanier Satterthwaite, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 10, 1992, he married Nancy Taylor Satterthwaite, who survives. He was a member of Holly Grove Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Belhaven. Survivors include seven daughters, Denise Willis Tyson and Charlene Renee McNeil, both of Greenville, Charisse Taylor and Shirley Taylor, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Francine Taylor and Sharon Denise Taylor, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Annette Taylor of Manhattan, N.Y.; six sons, Dewayne Lanier of Bath, Charles Bryon Satterthwaite of Atlantic City, N.J., Darren Satterthwaite and Keith Satterthwaite, both of Greenville, Harold Taylor of New York, N.Y., and Rayshawn Smith of Santee, S.C.; three sisters, Joyce Arthur, Mary Moore and Lisbon Spencer, all of Belhaven; one brother, John William Satterthwaite of Belhaven; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. BELHAVEN - Guy Franklin Satterthwaite, 61, supervisor of the Belhaven Street Department, died Friday night at his home at 202 Washington St. in Belhaven. He was born in Beaufort County on March 22, 1924, the son of the late U. Thomas Satterthwaite and Nettie Nixon Satterthwaite of Belhaven. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. A graveside service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Community Cemetery in Belhaven with the Rev. Linwood Adams officiating. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Eleise B. Satterthwaite; two sons, Larry Satterthwaite of Belhaven and Tommy Satterthwaite of Hiddleburg, Miss.; one daughter, Mrs. Carol Carrowan of Bath; three brothers: Earl Satterthwaite of Plymouth, Jim Satterthwaite of Pantego and Bruce Satterthwaite of Belhaven; and two sisters: Mrs. Doris Johnston and Miss Helen Satterthwaite, both of Belhaven. Marvin L. Satterthwaite
Mr. Marvin L. Satterthwaite, 45, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, in Cocoa, Fla. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Temple of Jesus Christ United Church in Washington with pastor Anthony Saxton of Rochester, N.Y., officiating. Mr. Satterthwaite was born Nov. 11, 1961, in Beaufort County. He was the son of Evalena Satterthwaite and Marvin “Red” Little. He graduated from Washington High School. His employment was with NASA in Florida. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was married to Jackie Roberts Satterthwaite, who survives. Survivors include two daughters, Lashana Satterthwaite and Danielle Satterthwaite, both of Cocoa, Fla.; two brothers, Tyrone Satterthwaite of Washington and Taquan Little of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Veronica S. Chapman of Newport News, Va., Tadra Satterthwaite of Washington, and Hilda Little and Evelyn Little, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and one grandchild. Mrs. Ora Lee Ebison Satterthwaite, 85, of 1110 Thompson Lane, Washington, died Tuesday, March 16, 2006, at home. Mrs. Satterthwaite was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 11, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Freeman Ebison Sr. and Adora S. Ebison. She attended the Beaufort County schools. She was married to Andrew Satterthwaite, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Mount Hebron Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), where she served on the Mother Board and in several auxiliaries. Survivors include one sister, Gennie L. Ward of Washington. Georgia Fonville Saunders of the 2600 block of King Court, a retired sales clerk, died July 17, 1993, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital. Mrs. Saunders was born in Aurora, N.C., and was the widow of Samuel T. Saunders Sr. She was retired from Gates Theatrical Costumes Co., Norfolk, and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church Berkley in Norfolk and the Workers for Christ Circle. Survivors include three sons, Samuel T. Saunders Jr. and Wilbert E. Saunders of Chesapeake and Paul G. Saunders Sr. of Hampton; five sisters, Vera F. Smith and Maggie F. Brickhouse of Chesapeake, Helen F. Taylor and Evaughn F. Bryant of Baltimore and Mable F. Daniels of Norfolk; one brother, Chester Fonville of Chesapeake; three grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Frances G. Saunders of Hampton. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Zion Baptist Church Berkley, Norfolk, by the Rev. Dr. Charles Hart. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Mary L. Saunders, 90, of the 1000 block of Centre Ave., died April 30, 2001. Born in Bath, N.C., she was the widow of Joseph M. Saunders Sr. and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where she was active as a Deaconess Emeritus. Mrs. Saunders is survived by three sons, Joseph M. Saunders Jr., John E. Saunders and Walter G. Saunders; two sisters, Josephine Freeman and Kattie Benito; four grandchildren, Gwendolyn M. Washington, Patricia Saunders Nixon, Jacqueline L. Herbert and Joseph M. Saunders III; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Robinson. Burial will be held in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Mrs. Lillie Beatrice Mann Saunderson, 70, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and formerly of Pantego died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Cobble Hill Nursing Home in Brooklyn. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Morning Star Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in Pantego with Elder Andrew Boomer Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Broad Creek Cemetery in Pantego. Mrs. Saunderson was born Jan. 19, 1936, in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Sarah Credle Mann and John Hilton Mann. She attended the public schools of Beaufort County. She was married to Artis Lee Saunderson, who preceded her in death. She was employed as head waitress and business partner of her husband at the 3-D Restaurant in Brooklyn. She was a member of Morning Star Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ). Survivors include her children, Ronnie Saunderson, Aonie Saunderson, Donnie Saunderson, Connie Saunderson, Vonnie Saunderson, Lonnie Saunderson, Bonnie Saunderson and Barry White; a sister, Eva Mae Mason of Pantego; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ms. Mary-Lee Saunderson, 53, of New York and formerly of Pantego, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006. Ms. Saunderson was the daughter of Reuben and Ida Mann Saunderson of Pantego. She had made her home in New York since graduating from the former Pantego High School. Survivors include one daughter; one son; five sisters including Hortense Saunderson Whitney of Pantego and two brothers. Christine McLawhorn Sawyer, 81, died Friday, June 13, 1997, in Greenville Villa. Mrs. Sawyer, a native of Beaufort County, had lived most of her life in the Calico community. Survivors include five daughters, Betty L. James of Norfolk, Patricia Williams of New Bern, Sally S. King of Littleton, Rebecca S. Kight of Chesapeake, Naomi Telliho of Sagerton, Pa.; four sons, Bud Sawyer, Mickey Sawyer and Donnelle Sawyer, all of Greenville, and Kenneth G. ''Tadpole'' Sawyer of Calico; sister, Estelle Guthrie of Chocowinity; 30 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Scott Kight of Chesapeake. A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel. Darlene Kittrell Sawyer
Darlene Kittrell Sawyer, 46, of the 1200 block of N. Highway 343, died June 24, 2002. She was born in Washington, N.C., the daughter of Bobbie B. Kittrell of Portsmouth and the late M. Heyward Kittrell and was the wife of Cecil Sawyer of the home. Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Sawyer is survived by a daughter, Melissa Lang of Shreveport, La.; a son, Oscar Heyward Goff of Shawboro, N.C.; two stepsons, Cecil Duane Sawyer of South Mills, N.C., and John Louis Sawyer of Erie, Pa.; a sister, Debbie Adams of Portsmouth; a brother, Michael Kittrell of Portsmouth and four grandchildren. Dewey James Sawyer, Jr., 71, formerly of Edenton, died Friday, June 28, 2002, in the Veteran's Health Center, Murfreesboro, Tenn. Mr. Sawyer was born in Bath, N.C., and was the son of the late Dewey J. Sr. and Mary Bembridge Sawyer. A disabled veteran, he had served in the United States Navy. Don was born August 27, 1939 in Beaufort County, son of the late Virginia Carrow Sawyer and Bennie Franklin Sawyer. In 1962, he married the former Betsy Patrick. Don served in the U.S. Army and in 1969, he went to work as a sales representative for American Tobacco Co. He worked his way up to District Sales Manager and retired from the company January 11, 1995. After retirement, he helped his son at Flemings Front End Service until cancer struck in 2007. Don put up a long, hard fight. Don was an avid boater. He served as Commodore of the Washington Yacht Club for three years and on the board for eight years. He was on the Board of Directors of the Washington Yacht and Country Club, where he worked very hard for the betterment of the club. It was his passion. Survivors include his wife, Betsy Patrick Sawyer; his son, Don Sawyer, Jr.; grandchildren, Sarah Catherine Sawyer and Don Sawyer, III; his brother, Terry Sawyer and wife, Alida of Washington; nephews, T.J. Sawyer and wife, Jamie of Greenville and Matthew and Daniel Sawyer of Washington; and his father-in-law, Dennis W. Patrick and wife, Joyce of Greenville. Mr. G. Harold Sawyer, 86, a resident of 200 Pine Street, Ridgewood, Washington, NC died Saturday, September 01, 2007 at Ridgewood Manor. He graduated from Washington High School. After graduation he served his country in the United States Army where he served for seven years in the Artillery Division as a Staff Sergeant. Mr. Sawyer then attended the New York School of Mechanical Dentistry. He returned to Washington where he owned and operated the Washington Dental Lab for 50 years. He also served as a Lay Minister at Asbury United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Grover H. Sawyer, Jr. and wife Carol of Washington and Philip Rodney Sawyer and wife Paula of Ellicott City, MD. Three grandchildren, Jason E. Sawyer of Austin, TX, Brendan M. Sawyer of Rock Hill, SC, David M. He was a 1942 graduate of Washington High School and attended George Washington University. On July 26, 1943, he married the former Helen Jones, who survives. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Sawyer worked in retail sales with Kenneys and Belks, and in 1950 purchased his own business. He was owner/operator of Hilton’s Men Shop. During the past 55 years, he has provided men’s clothing to Beaufort and surrounding counties and was known as an icon for downtown Washington. Mr. Sawyer was a member of the Historical Downtown Washington Merchants Association, a member of the Washington Jaycees and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Washington for 45 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Washington for 56 years. He served as treasurer and on the Administrative Board of the church. Mr. Sawyer loved to fish and garden and was an avid Duke fan. In addition to Helen, his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his two daughters, Patricia “Tish” Moore and her husband, Dr. Mike Moore, and Sheila Tanner and her husband, Fritz Tanner Jr., all of Washington; his grandchildren, Gretchen Moore Heiler, Gwyn Moore McCabe, Mat Tanner, Elizabeth Tanner and Ann Hunt Tanner; his great grandchildren, Collin Heiler and Sadie Heiler; and his brother, Harold G. Mrs. Violet Christine Rose Sawyer, age 82, a resident of 1151 West Pungo Street, Belhaven, NC died Sunday February 10, 2008 at her home. On February 10, 2008 our loving and dear mama and nanny was called home. She will be forever remembered in our hearts and will be missed more than words could ever say. Lillie Moore Scott, 87, of Hampton slipped into a peaceful sleep and entered into eternal life on Sunday, May 12, 2002. She was preceded in death by a son, Allen Scott, and a grandson, Timothy Hines. She retired from Riverside School of Nursing after more than 20 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, East End. He was a retired building construction manager with the State of Virginia. Mr. Seaman had been a resident of Beaufort County for approximately 16 years. He was a former member of the Masons. He was an avid sailor and was often referred to by his family as “Captain Blythe.” Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Anne Seaman Thompson and her husband, Leonard W. of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, John G. Seaman, Jr. of Yorktown, VA and Henry W. Seaman of Richmond, VA; two sisters, Alice S. McDonald of Colorado Springs, CO and Jean S. Glen M. ''Shep'' Sheppard, 68, passed away at his home on Oct. 10, 2002. Mr. Sheppard was born in Washington, N.C., and was the son of the late Edward F. and Joanna Cutler Sheppard. After graduating from high school, he served five years as an electrical apprentice. He was a retired electrical estimator for E.G. Middleton, Inc., where he served as vice president from 1975 until he retired in 1996. He was a member of the Tidewater Joint Apprentice Training Committee, NECA Joint Apprenticeship Committee, I.B.E.W. Local 80, and past president of the Electric League of Norfolk. He was also a member of Bayside Baptist Church. Survivors include his devoted wife of 44 years, Mary Frances Smith Sheppard; daughters, Angela Sheppard Underhill and husband Tom, Tracie Lynn Sheppard; sons, Shawn C. Sheppard and wife Leandra and Stuart M. Sheppard; grandchildren, Jessica Sheppard, Dahne Mezzenga, Alexandra Sheppard and Reece Sheppard; sister, Gray Clayborne; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. James E. Sheppard
James E. Sheppard, 69, of the 5000 block of Bark Lane, a retired HVAC metal mechanic, died Sept. 27, 1994, in Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mr. Sheppard was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was retired from the City of Virginia Beach after 17 years of service. He was a member of Aragona Christian Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles #3204, Virginia Beach. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Peggy R. Sheppard and was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret V. Sheppard. He is also survived by two daughters, Lynn Huffman of Virginia Beach and Leigh Austin of Blounts Creek, N.C.; a son, James R. Sheppard of Virginia Beach; a sister, Audrey B. Butcher of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Roy E. Sheppard of Virginia Beach, Dalton Sheppard of Ogdenburg, N.Y., and Billy Sheppard of Belhaven, N.C.; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, by the Rev. William Campbell and the Rev. Alvin Thompson. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Davis Cemetery, Pantego, N.C. Rudolph Henry Sheppard
CAYCE - Services for Rudolph Henry Sheppard, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, with Masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Mr. Sheppard died Tuesday, October 28, 2003. Born in Washington, N.C., he was a son of the late Leonard M. and Rosa Alice Sheppard. He was staff manager at American General Insurance Company, a member of the Cayce Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, the Jamil Shrine Temple and Cayce United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Esther Moore Sheppard; son, Ronald H. Sheppard of Gaston; daughter, Steva S. Gentry of Hope Mills, N.C.; brother, Ralph Sheppard of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandsons, Paul Eugene Gentry and Steven Lawrence Gentry. He was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters. William H. Sheppard
William H. Sheppard, 40, of New Port Richey, died Wednesday (April 12, 1995) at Columbia New Port Richey Hospital. Born in Washington, N.C., he came here 14 years ago from Morristown, Tenn. He was a retired Air Force veteran and a Baptist. He was a member of the Pearl of the West Masonic Lodge, the Egypt Temple Shrine 146 F&AM, the Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Tampa and the York Rite Bodies, Clearwater. Edith Jones Shoffner
Mrs. Edith “Irene” Jones Shoffner, age 89, a resident of 304 Pamlico Drive, Pamlico Village, Washington, died Friday, May 18, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, conducted by Steve Hill. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Peter Allen, T. W. Allen, Will Martin, Jason Day, Bill DeBrauwer and Jason Madre. Mrs. Shoffner was born in Greensboro, N.C on September 9, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Ira Clarence Jones and Velna Shoffner Jones. Mrs. Shoffner worked as a storekeeper for Betsy Ross Clothing store, store clerk for Taldo’s Dress Shop, and retired as supervisor of service and shipping department at Hamilton Beach. She served as church organist at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ for 25 years. Mrs. Shoffner attended First Church of Christ in Washington. Mrs. Shoffner was married to Garland Wayland “Pete” Shoffner, who preceded her in death, May 8, 1989. Mrs. Shoffner is survived by three daughters, Sandra Shoffner Martin and husband, William Neil Martin of Greensboro, Mary Lou Shoffner Madre and husband Philip Madre of Chocowinity, N.C., Garleen Shoffner Woolard and husband, Hal Woolard of Washington, N.C.; three sisters, Louise Jones Greeson of Liberty, N.C., Mary Frances Jones and Jean Jones Greeson both of Julian, N.C.; six grandchildren, Peter Owen Allen and wife Tammy Allen, Mary Beth Martin Day and husband, Jason Day, Thomas Walt “TW” Allen and wife Lisa Allen, William Neil “Will” Martin, Jr. and wife, Lauren Martin, Sara Olivia Woolard and Edith Lauren Woolard; three step grandchildren, Nikole Madre DeBrauwer and husband, Bill Debrauwer, Jason Madre and wife, Rebekah Madre, Courtney Madre; and six great grandchildren, Jackson Thomas Allen, Kyle Rose Allen, Cameron Avery Allen, Madigan Raine Allen, William Madre “Liam” Debrauwer and Nora Elizabeth Madre. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Shoffner was preceded in death by five brothers: Harry Jones, Floyd Jones, Clarence Jones, Jack Jones, and David Jones. Polly Grissom Shortridge
Ms. Polly Grissom Shortridge, 61, of 316 NE 61st Street, Oak Island, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pamlico Memorial Gardens with D.J. Maxey officiating. Ms. Shortridge was born in Beaufort County on Aug. 16, 1945, daughter of the late Samuel and Myrtie Edwards Grissom. She was a graduate of Chocowinity High School and was a former employee of the Washington Garment Factory. Survivors include one son, Thomas Lewis of the home; one brother, Phillip Grissom of Chocowinity and two sisters, Peggy Leggett of Washington and Patsy Davis of Chocowinity, The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
