Barbara Ann Leggett Simmons
Mrs. Barbara Ann Leggett Simmons, 42, of 9 Perwinkle Court, and formerly of Washington, N.C., died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, N.C. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Deeper Life Ministries Church, Washington, N.C. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. Simmons was born December 13, 1959 in Beaufort County, daughter of Hannah Mae Moore Leggett and the late John Lodge. She attended Beaufort County Schools graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1978. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Elizabeth City State University in May 1982. Her career path began with the City of Greensboro Police Department as a Police Officer, Chief of Police at Bennett College, Greensboro; at her death, she was a trainer for Bank of America, Greensboro. She was past president of the Gate City Chapter North State Law Enforcement Officers Association, PTA President at Alderman Elementary School, member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Alpha Rho Chapter, and an honorary member of North State Law Enforcement Officers Association Gate City Chapter. She was a member of Faith Harvest Fellowship Church, Greensboro. She was married to Kenneth R. Simmons who preceded her in death on February 17, 1995. Survivors include one son, Christopher R. Simmons of Greensboro; mother, Hannah Moore Leggett, of Washington, N.C.; four sisters, Earrah L. Coward of Chocowinity, Anna M. Allen, Betty L. Harris and Patricia L. Ore, all of Washington, N.C.; three brothers, Redden Leggett of Bath, Henry Mack Leggett and Samuel Earl Leggett, both of Washington, N.C. She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter R. Leggett. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Randolph Funeral Home Chapel, 219 N. Katherine Bright Simmons
Katherine Bright Simmons, 50, of 975 Main Street, Swan Quarter died on Friday, February 22, 2008, at home. Born in Beaufort County, June 11, 1957, she was the daughter of Lenora R. Bright and the late John Lenford Bright. She and her husband owned and operated the former Mattamuskeet Inn for some twenty years, was a former member of the Board of Directors of Greater Hyde County Chamber of Commerce and a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener and had a special love for flowers. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the family plot in Mount Olive Church of Christ Cemetery in the Ponzer Community. Pastors Valerie Ballance and Richard Smartnick will officiate. Surviving are her husband, Joseph “Joey” Leslie Simmons IV; her mother, Lenora “Nonie” R. Bright of the home; a son, Joseph “Jay” Leslie Simmons V of Fairfield; a daughter, Averi E. Simmons of Greenville; two sisters, Beverly B. Meekins and husband Michael of Engelhard and Debra B. Todd Singleton
Mr. Todd “Tootie” Singleton, age 41, of 163 Chesterfield Drive in Washington, N.C. died suddenly on Friday morning, November 2, 2007. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2007 at the First Christian Church and will be conducted by Dr. Michael Price and the Rev. Amanda Driskill. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Tootie was born in Raleigh on July 13, 1966 the son of John Graham and Kathryn Everett Singleton who survive him. Tootie grew up in Garner, N.C. and graduated from Garner Senior High School in 1984. He was active in Boy Scout Troop No. 391 and received the Eagle award in 1982. He moved to Washington, N.C. in the late 1980s to work on the family farm. For the past several years he was the owner and operator of BTS Wood Services. Tootie knew people all over the Washington and Beaufort Co. area and was a friend to all. He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Washington, loved N.C. State sports, watching any program on the Western Channel, especially Gunsmoke, and having fun with his many friends. He had a great sense of humor that was infectious, and those who knew Tootie have many stories and good times to remember him by. Tootie is survived by his parents, Graham and Kathryn Singleton of Garner; his brother, Gra and his wife Tracey of Garner; his nieces and nephew who loved him dearly, Rachel Singleton, Harrison Singleton, and Emma Grace Singleton, all of Garner; his step-grandmother, Eva Mae Singleton of Washington; several aunts and an uncle, many cousins, many friends, and his church family at First Christian Church in Washington; his beloved neighbors on Chesterfield Drive and his pets. Horace Allen Skinner
Mr. Horace Allen Skinner, age 75, died Tuesday morning, September 25, 2007 at Britthaven. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2007 at Belhaven Community Cemetery officiated by Arthur “Bud” Ball. Lester Sullivan, Victor Waters, Kent Gurganus, Elwood Swain, Jimmy Gaylord and Dale Woolard will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Skinner was born in Beaufort County on February 1, 1932, son of the late Bonnie Allen Skinner and Mary Kathleen Jefferson Skinner. Mr. Skinner was a tugboat captain for 35 years, a member of Jackson Swamp Hunting Club and a member of Hunter’s Bridge Church of Christ. He is survived by his brothers: Bobby Skinner and wife, Marie of Bath and Jackie Skinner of Bath; his sister: Doris Skinner of Bath; sister-in-law: Lou Skinner of Belhaven and a number of nieces and nephews. Tayloe Newman Skittletharpe
Tayloe Newman Skittletharpe, 62, departed this life on Friday, June 22, 2001. Born in Bath, N.C., he had been a Peninsula resident for 60 years. He worked with many car dealerships on the Peninsula as a salesman. Mr. Skittletharpe was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Pearl Skittletharpe, and his father, Dewey Walter Skittletharpe, and his brother, John McDonald Skittletharpe. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Dawn Epps, and his granddaughter, Meghan Elizabeth Epps, both of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; two sisters, Sarah Skittletharpe Winberry and her husband, William T. "Jim" Winberry, of Newport News, Va., and Lou S. Smith of Columbia, N.C; a sister-in-law, Jan Skittletharpe of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him very much. James David Skittlethorp
James David Skittlethorp, 79, a loyal and loving father of the 400 block of Plummer Drive, died Feb. 4, 1999, at a Chesapeake hospital. Born in Bath, N.C., he was a retired electrician from Shop 51, Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Mr. Skittlethorp was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy L. Watkins of Fort Pierce, Fla.; three sons, James A. Skittlethorp and Daniel L. Skittlethorp, both of Chesapeake, and David T. Skittlethorp of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Mary Whitfield of North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Father John Dorgan. William R. Skittlethorp
William R. Skittlethorp, 81, of the 1200 block of Wingfield Ave., died March 14, 1998, in Norfolk. Born in Bath, N.C., he retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop 02, after 37 years of service. He was a member of Naomi Masonic Lodge No. 87, Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Temple of the Shrine. Survivors include his wife, Claudia M. Skittlethorp; three daughters, Jannie Herman of Chesapeake, Barbara Sullivan of Boston and Ruby Hooks of Norfolk; a stepson, Frank Phelps of Norfolk; a sister, Mary Whitfield of Ayden, N.C.; a brother, James D. Skittlethorp of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved neighborhood children who knew him as ''Mr. Bob.'' A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, by the Rev. Gary McClenney. Entombment will be in Rosewood Memorial Park Mausoleum. John E. Skvarla, Jr.
Mr. John E. Skvarla, Jr., age 85, a resident of Washington and Blounts Creek, NC, died January 19, 2008 after a short illness. Mr. Skvarla was born August 2, 1922 in Clifton, N.J. He held a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Chemistry from Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York and was, during World War II, an early selection by the United States Army for participation in the Manhattan Project for development of the first atomic bomb. Mr. Skvarla headed one of the particle separation laboratories at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. During this assignment, he met and married his wife of 56 years, Mona C. Skvarla of Hamlet, N.C., who preceded him in death in 2001. After service in the U.S. Army, Mr. Skvarla spent the next 30 years with the research and development group of the Union Carbide Corporation, having assignments in Oak Ridge, Paducah, Kentucky, Tuxedo Park, New York and Niagara Falls, New York. He is the holder of numerous U.S. Patents. Upon early retirement from Union Carbide, Mr. Skvarla, an avid yachtsman, moved to Blounts Creek, North Carolina. He became the founder and President of Carolina Liquid Blasting Corporation which provided industrial hydro blasting and vacuum cleaning services to corporations such as PCS Phosphate and Weyerhauser. Mr. Skvarla is survived by four children: son, John E. Skvarla, III and wife, Elizabeth of Pinehurst, N.C., daughter, Jennifer S. Alligood of Terra Ceia, N.C., daughter, Mona V. Hogan of Niagra Falls, NY and son, Paul M. Skvarla of Terra Ceia, N.C. He has ten grandchildren, Matt and Kate Skvarla, Teresa Van Staalduinen, Allison Hill, Katlin, Richard, John and Ann Hogan, and Ashley Henderson and Brenton Alligood. Mr. Skvarla is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Marin Van Staalduinen and Caroline and Graham Hill. Of Mr. Skvarla’s five siblings, sisters, Jeanette De Marco, formerly of Washington, N.C. and Genevieve Skvarla survive him. A funeral service will be held at Mother of Mercy Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2008 in Washington, NC with Father Arturo Cabra officiating. Bessie Louise Wilder Slade
Mrs. Bessie Louise Wilder Slade, 84, of 365 Respess St., Washington, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, Washington, with the Rev. Dr. E.R. McNair officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. Slade was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 5, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Pauline Bonner Wilder and Hugh Edward Wilder. She attended the Mother of Mercy Catholic School. She was married to James Colis Slade, who preceded her in death. She was affiliated with St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Her service at St. Christopher’s was recognized through the receipt of honors with the lay reader’s guild, the altar guild and sanctuary guild. She was a member of Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, Washington. Survivors include two sisters, Marie Heggie of Washington and Julia Griffin of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Hugh Wilder Jr. of Washington and Charles Wilder of Portsmouth, Va.; one stepdaughter, Annie Moore of Blounts Creek; one goddaughter, Dorothy Boyd of Washington; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilhelmina Rogers and Pauline Smaw and two brothers, George Wilder and William Earl Wilder. Charles C. Smaw
Charles C. ''Cherry'' Smaw of the 700 block of W. 37th St. died July 28, 1995, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Smaw was born in Aurora, N.C. He was a retired truck driver for Broudy-Kantor, was a Catholic, an Army veteran of World War II and the widower of Susie Smaw. Survivors include three daughters, Susie L. Bell of Chesapeake and Patricia S. Jordan and Sandra J. Jennings, both of Virginia Beach; a son, William S. Spruill of Canada; two brothers, Edward O. Smaw Sr. of Chesapeake and James M. Smaw of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Jesse Smaw Winfield, Tony Smaw Bembery, both of Virginia Beach, Edwina Smaw Robinson, Edward O. Smaw Jr. and Clyde W. Smaw, all of Chesapeake; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Maggie Saunders Smaw and Elijah Smaw. A graveside service will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Anthony Moses. The remains will be ready for viewing at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Edward Ollice Smaw, Sr.
Edward Ollice Smaw, Sr., 80, of the 200 block of Velva Dr., died Oct. 30, 1999, at a local hospital. Chicken Eddie, as he was also known, was born in Aurora, N.C, a son of the late Elijah and Maggie Maye-Smaw. He was a retired sandblaster from Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop No. 71 and a U.S. Army and Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Usher Board. He was a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He is survived by his wife, Addie Mae Smaw; two daughters, Jessie M. Smaw of Virginia Beach, Edwina Smaw-Roberts and husband, Edwin, of Chesapeake; five stepdaughters, Donica Childs and husband, James, of Suffolk, Lanee Mosley, Janice Coleman, Sabrina McKiver and Latisha Delbridge, all of Chesapeake; four sons, Edward Smaw Jr. of Portsmouth, Clyde W. Smaw of Chesapeake, Rickie Edmonds and wife, Leahnelda, of Norfolk and Samuel O. Robert James Smaw, Sr.
Mr. Robert James Smaw Sr., 90, of 712 W. Fifth St., Washington, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Britthaven of Washington. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington, with the Rev. Edward Moultrie Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington. Mr. Smaw was born in Beaufort County on April 17, 1916. He was the son of the late John Gray Smaw and Emma Smallwood Smaw. He attended the Beaufort County Schools. He retired as an orderly with Beaufort County Hospital, Washington. He was a lifelong member of Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara S. Guilford of Randolph, Mass., Debra S. Minor of Washington, and Tammy Glaspie-Smith of Greensboro; one son, Robert J. Smaw Jr. of Washington; one sister, Everlee Mills of Washington; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Helen Smaw, Mary Smaw Boyd, Fannie Smaw, Violet Smaw and Clara Williams Godley and four brothers, Herbert Smaw, Johnny Smaw, Frank Smaw and Isaac Smaw. Mrs. Annie Louise Wallace Smith, age 97, a former resident of 108 Waterford Place, Washington, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at Britthaven of Washington. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Eddie Bowen. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Old Ford Church of Christ, Circle #3, and the Ladies Golden Age class. She formerly worked as a nurse’s aide at Beaufort County Hospital and the Home of the Incurable in Washington, D.C. Survivors include three sons, Roland Smith of Washington, daughter in law, Gladys Smith of Poquoson, VA, Alton B. Smith and wife, Lauretta of Kernersville, and Carbie Smith, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Manteno, IL; one daughter, Joyce Smith Boyd and her husband, Linwood Earl of Washington; 18 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren, and seven step grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie B. Wallace; four sisters, Rosa Lee Barnes, Myrtle Everett, Erma Gray Tankard, and Ella Ruth Buck; one son, George Earl Smith, May 13, 1998 and his wife (daughter in law), Fay Smith on October 8, 2003; one daughter, Rita Louise Smith in 1945; a grandson, Michael on Sept. 4, 1977; and a great grandson, Justin Turner Boyd on Feb. 26, 2002. Annie Mae Tetterton Smith
Mrs. Annie Mae Tetterton Smith, age 87, a resident of 741 Neck Road, Washington, NC died Tuesday September 4, 2007 at the home of her brother, Jack Tetterton, in Jamesville, NC. A funeral will be held 2:00 PM Friday September 7, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Dr. Carolyn Pilgrim. Burial will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. James Thomas Linton, Brad Linton, Ralph Sherwood Linton, David Sawyer, Kenny Tetterton and Shane Smith serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Smith was born in Beaufort County on May 9, 1920 daughter of the late David Allen Tetterton and the late Eva Brownie Chambers Tetterton. She was a 1938 graduate of Pantego High School. Mrs. Smith married Millard Lewis “Bud” Smith on April 28, 1938 who preceded her in death on November 15, 1985. She worked six years with Sampson Shirt Factory and retired from Hamilton Beach with fourteen years of service. Mrs. Smith was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister: Ruth Linton of Kinston and three brothers: Tommy Tetterton of Rocky Mount, John D. Tetterton of Jamesville and Jack Tetterton of Jamesville. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a son: Terry Lynn Smith on May 5, 1962; a sister Doris Sawyer and two brothers: Jimmy Tetterton and D.C. Tetterton. Mr. Arnold James Smith, 54, of 310 E. Second St., Washington, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Arthur Leslie Smith, 70, of Little Bay Ave., died Jan. 22, 1994, in his home. Mr. Smith was born in Pinetown, N.C. He was a Baptist and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was retired. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Gladys Smith of Norfolk; four daughters, Bertie Mae Cohen of Blauvelt, N.Y., Ardith Linda Early of Princeton, N.J., Cynthia Kay Read of Morrisville, Pa. and Leslie Anne Sutton of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Ralph G. Smith of North Carolina and Roger B. Smith of Virginia Beach; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold E. Audrey Scott-Smith
July 12, 1934 - November 11, 2007--Audrey Scott-Smith, 73, of Bath, NC, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on Sunday surrounded by her family. Audrey was born in Manchester, England to John and Trudie Scott. She is survived by her devoted husband of 31 years, James B. Smith, of the home. She is also survived by three loving children: Carol-Anne Phypers of England, John Bagnell and wife Pam, of England, and Liz Jones and husband Roy, of Goldsboro; and two step-children, Kathryn Allen of Missouri, and James B. Smith II of Florida. Other survivors include her grandchildren Kayleigh Phypers, Daniel Jones, Scott and Luke Bagnell, and six step-grandchildren. Audrey worked as a Realtor/Broker in Goldsboro and Bath before retirement. She was an active member of the Bath community. She was a Town commissioner for six years, during which time she designed an official Town seal for Bath which was adopted. She was the first female member of the Bath Lion’s Club, and a member of the Bath Garden Club. She was also a member of the Bath Tri-centennial Celebration Committee. Audrey’s primary love in life was her family. She also loved to travel and was an avid gardener. She will be remembered for being such an optimistic, positive person with tremendous determination and love for life. Visitation will be on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home in Goldsboro. Bonner Smith, Jr.
Bonner "Mayo" Smith, Jr. passed away June 5, 2006. Mayo was born in Winsteadville, N.C., Aug. 21, 1914, the oldest of five children born to Bonner and Lucy Smith. Mrs. Burchie Johnston of Belhaven, N.C., is his latest surviving sibling. He attended and graduated from Pantego High School in Pantego, N.C. He loved to tell the stories of driving the school bus through all types of weather all the way from Winsteadville to Pantego. In the 1920s it took over an hour to make the present day trip of 15 minutes. Mayo left home during the depression and joined the merchant marines serving on maritime ships and then tugboats. During World War II, he worked as a rigger at the Norfolk Naval Ship Building and Dry Dock. He married Christine Trippe also of Winsteadville Oct. 25, 1941. After World War II, Mayo returned to North Carolina and worked in the appliance retail industry and then automobile retail, running a service, repair station and car sales business. In the 1950s, he returned to the Norfolk area working in the used car business. He then went to work with Tyree-Jones Ford earning top sales awards with the Ford Motor Company. He was inducted into the Ford 300 club and then the prestigious Ford Motor Company. He later started the Smith-Johnson Motor Corporation which later became Smith Corner Motors. While at Smith Corner Motors, the company became one of the largest independent automobile dealerships in the U.S. Mayo then became a GMC truck dealer winning the Martin J. Curio award as the largest volume GMC truck dealers in the United States. In 1967, the dealership took on the Toyota franchise and by 1972 was ranked as the number two Toyota dealership. During this time, Mayo became the president of the Windsor Auto Auction, elected vice president of the Tidewater Independent Automobile Dealers Association and in 1970 was elected president of the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association. In 1977, Mayo and Christine retired and moved to Nags Head. He stayed retired for a short time before opening C & B Quality Foods. Later, he yearned to return to the automobile business and started Outer Banks Chrysler Plymouth. In 1987, he reopened the old Seafarer Restaurant. Mayo served as the social chairman of Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club, started the Eastern Armature Golf Tournament, served as social chairman of Cedar Point Golf and Country Club where he later chaired the Governors Ball for Virginia’s new elected Governor Miles Godwin. In 1972, he served on the Board of Directors of DePaul Hospital. He was a member of the Ocean View Masonic Lodge and Khedive Shrine Temple. He was an active member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, very active in the Baum Center with their senior programs and Duck Woods Country Club. Mayo is survived by one son, Dr. Bonner Smith III, of Stewartstown, Pa.; four grandchildren, Julie Leavel of Kitty Hawk, Debbie McClearen of Raleigh, Bonner Smith IV and Ben Smith of Stewartstown, Pa.; and three great-grandchildren, Seth and Morgan Taylor Leavel of Kitty Hawk and Sarah Elizabeth McClearen of Raleigh. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church in Winsteadville, N.C. BELHAVEN - Charles Nathaniel Smith, Sr., 82, of Belhaven, died Saturday at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. Mr. Smith was born in Beaufort County on October 15, 1912. He was the son of the late Joseph B. and Mattie M. Smith. He was self-employed as a paint contractor. He served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Smith was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, VFW Post 10347 and American Legion Post 249. Mr. Smith was married to the former Marguerite McKinney, who preceded him in death in August 1987. Survivors include two sons: C.N. Smith, Jr. of Kill Devil Hills and Steve Smith of Washington; three grandchildren: Stacy Smith, Jessica Smith and Matthew Smith. Mr. Charles Steven Smith, age 45, a resident of 60 Tyler Street, Washington, NC died Thursday afternoon, April 5, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Christine Trippe Smith passed away Jan. 28, 2002. She was born in Washington, N.C., June 5, 1921, and was the daughter of Henry Trippe and Sarah Jenkins Trippe, formerly of Washington, N.C. She married Mayo Smith Oct. 25, 1941 and resided in Portsmouth, where they owned and operated Smith Corner Motors. In 1977, they retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where they opened C&B Quality Foods, Outer Banks Chrysler-Plymouth, and were owners of various restaurants on the Outer Banks. Mrs. Smith was a member of Duck Woods Country Club, Eastern Star, various woman's clubs and the Community Watch. She is survived by her husband, Mayo Smith; son, Dr. Bonner Smith of Stewartstown, Pa.; two granddaughters, Julie Leavel and Debbie McClearen of Kill Devil Hills; two grandsons, Bonner and Ben Smith of Stewartstown; two great-grandsons, Seth and Morgan Leavel and one great-granddaughter, Sara McClearen. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Soisson of Butler, Pa.; and her brother, Dwight Trippe of Hattiesburg, Miss. A memorial service was held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Kitty Hawk Methodist Church. Harold L. Smith
Mr. Harold L. Smith, age 69, died at his home in Cocoa, Fla., on May 16. He was the son of the late Jessie L. and Venters Hudson Smith. Mr. Smith was born in Belhaven, N.C., and grew up in Washington, N.C., where he attended Washington High School. He served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division for three years. He later graduated from Lincoln Christian College in Lincoln, Ill., and served as a minister and youth minister for several years. He left the ministry and entered business in Indiana before moving to Florida in 1972. He was retired from Wylie Baxley Funeral Home in Rockledge, Fla., where he had worked for the past few years. He was an active member of The Cocoa Church of Christ, Christian Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Edward Lee, Jessie Jr., and Charles; and one sister, Betty Smith. He is survived by one sister, Mary Ann Jennings of Warrenton, Va. He is also survived by one foster son, Clayton Castetter. and daughter-in-law, Michelle Henderson. Helen Equils Smith, 70, of Port Charlotte, died Nov. 27, 2003. She was born in Bath, N.C., and came to the South Gulf Cove area of Port Charlotte 11 years ago from Waterford, Conn. She worked for 30 years for General Dynamics electric boat division in Groton, Conn., and later as a marketing administrator for a division of Science Applications International Corp. in New London, Conn. She was active in rock, gem and mineral clubs and was a member of the Venice and Sarasota clubs. Mr. Smith was married to the former Lillian “Toots” Boger, who preceded in death in 1988. Survivors include a son, Donald Jay Smith and his wife, Saundra of Front Royal, VA; a daughter, Lisa Smith Tobin and her husband, Thomas of Sterling VA; a sister, Margaret Chrismon of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Tommy Smith of Hibbing, MN and Allen Smith of Kernersville, NC. John Dawson Smith
Mr. John Dawson Smith, 81, of South Currituck Road, Currituck, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at Sentara Leigh Hospital. Mr. Smith was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 16, 1925. He was the son of the late James Edgar and Pearlie Garris Smith. He was retired from the Navy, where he served during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was also a retired civil service employee. He was married to Emma Lee Clark Smith, who survives. He was a Master Mason and member of the Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter No. 1. He was a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church, Currituck. Survivors include one daughter, Mellony Smith of Norfolk, Va.; one son, Donald Dawson Smith of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two brothers, Carl W. Mrs. Laura Keech Smith, 89, of Autumnfield Rest Home and formerly of 417 East Bay Street, Belhaven, died Saturday July 28, 2007. Mrs. Smith was born in Beaufort County on October 23, 1917 to the late William and Ida Keech of Free Union. She married Charlie Smith on April 6, 1944, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1985. Mrs. Smith worked with the local Roses store, the Colonial Grocery Store and Bell’s Grocery. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Belhaven Lioness Club and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She and her husband Charlie operated the Belhaven Community Center for many years. Survivors include one son, Harold Smith and his wife Susan of Belhaven; two grandchildren, Brittany Smith of Greenville, Ashley Smith Johnson and her husband Parker of Lyons, Colo., and one great-grandson, Bode Rivers Johnson. Mamie E. Smith
Mamie E. Smith, 82, was embraced by God's grace on Monday, May 13, 2002. A native of Washington, N.C., she was a resident of Newport News for 62 years. She graduated from Chocowinity High School in North Carolina and later retired as a supervisor for MICA Plant, after 20 years of service. She was a member of West Hampton Baptist Church and Sunday School Class. She enjoyed lovely flower gardens and liked cooking for others. She loved friends and was a very giving person. She also had a love for Southern Gospel Music and singing. She was a very devoted mother and friend. Survivors include her daughter, Faye Arnett and her husband, Bill; two sisters, Rosalie Gurley and Ester Mae Norris, both of Virginia; four brothers, James, Elmer and Jerry McRoy, all of Fla., and Billy McRoy of N.C.; two grandchildren, Starr Cortes of Calif. and Scott Arnett of Va.; one great granddaughter, Callie Connelly of Calif.; and a host of loving family and friends. A going home celebration will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at Peninsula Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. H. Ron White. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth “Pig” Jones Smith, formerly of Edward, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006. A funeral will be conducted today at noon in Evangel Missionary Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Charles Wallace Snell, Jr.
Mr. Charles Wallace Snell, Jr., 84, of Greenville, died Friday, June 16, 2006. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville. Asray P. Snowden, a retired domestic worker, died Friday of complications from a stroke at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 91. A resident of West Lexington Street since 1950, Mrs. Snowden was employed as a domestic for 30 years and retired in the 1960s. Asray Peas was born in Aurora, N.C., and moved to Baltimore as a child. She attended city public schools. She was married to William Snowden for many years. He died in 1961. Mrs. Snowden was a member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church and the Waxter Senior Center. NORTHFIELD - The Rev. Robert William South, 88, of Washington, N.C., long-time summer resident of Northfield, died Dec. 28, 2000 at his home. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Northfield. The Rev. Lee Alison Crawford will officiate. Services were held Dec. 31, 2000 in at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Washington, N.C. The Rev. Clifton Daniel III, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina, the Rev. Michael C. Nation of Trinity Church in Chocowinity, N.C., and Rev. Crawford officiated. Interment was at St. Peter's Memorial Gardens in Washington, N.C. Father South was born Nov. 15, 1912, in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas, the son of James Breckinridge South and Lucille Fant South. He married Margaret Elizabeth Smith on Sept. 17, 1938. He earned his associates degree from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky., and a bachelor of science from Wake Forest University. Father South was a pharmaceutical salesman for American Cyanamid before he took early retirement to study for the priesthood. He received a certificate of work accomplished from the Virginia Theological Seminary and served in churches in North Carolina, Georgia and Vermont. Father South was a private pilot for 50 years. He was a captain with the Civil Air Patrol, and served for 19 years. He wrote “Bashin” Bob Clarke and Other Stories of Heartache and Hunger Creek." He was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed golf, reading, traveling and walking. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret Smith South; two daughters, Patricia White of Northfield and Penelope Kosztolnyik of Bryan, Texas; a brother, John Russell South of Rockport, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Gernie T. Spain
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Gernie T. Spain, 90, passed away peacefully Dec. 2, 2007, at a local hospital. Born April 7, 1917, to the late Charlie and Anne Spain in Hobucken, N.C., he served out country proudly in the U.S. Naval Reserves during World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a master chief. He was a longtime member of Riverside Baptist Church. Mr. Spain will always be remembered as a loving father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed. Mrs. Marguerite A. Spain, 84, of 250 Lover’s Lane and formerly of Route 4, Box 143, Washington, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 14, 2007 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens with Mike Huppmann officiating. Mrs. Spain was born May 11, 1923 in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late Eddie F. Alligood and Sudie Cayton Alligood. On February 20, 1945 she married Luther L. Spain, Jr., who preceded her in death on May 4, 1988. She was employed with 27 years of service at Hospital Pharmacy and was a member of Asbury Methodist Church. Survivors include her son, Jimmy R. Mrs. Marguerite Jamerson Sparrow, age 85, a resident of 6845 River Road Washington died on Monday September 17, 2007 at Beaufort County Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday September 20, 2007 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, AMiA officiated by King Cole and John Grayson. A private burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mrs. Sparrow was born in Leaksville (Eden), NC on October 7, 1921 to the late Samuel Henry Jamerson and the late Rosa Etta Dallas. On October 24, 1946, she married David Thomas “Tommy” Sparrow who survives. Mrs. Sparrow was a homemaker who attended Church of the Good Shepherd AMiA. In addition to her husband, survivors include: one son: David Sparrow and his wife, Marti of Raleigh, three daughters: Suzanne Bledsole and her husband, Raymond of Wake Forrest, Carol Clark and her husband, Doug of Belhaven, Jan Sparrow of the home, one sister: Avis Whiteley and her husband, Roland of Danville, VA, seven grandchildren; Avery Sparrow and his wife, Jessica, Andrew Sparrow, Joel Bledsole, Thomas Bledsole, Mary Loren Bledsole, Ginger Gaylord and her husband, Jeffery, Lindsay Hubers and her husband, Shane, and seven great-grandchildren; Emily Gaylord, Meredith Gaylord, Dylan Hubers, Jesse Hubers, Brent Hubers, Mollie Hubers, and Hannah Hubers. David Arnold Spencer
David Arnold Spencer, 55, of 415 Germantown Road, Scranton, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Pungo District Hospital. He had been a patient at Cross Creek Health Care in Swan Quarter recently. Born in Beaufort County, July 12, 1949, he was the son of the late Rupert and Dorothy Sawyer Spencer. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired after completing his year’s of service in the Coast Guard Reserves. He later worked and retired from the Ferry Division of the N. C. Department of Transportation and also worked as a commercial fisherman. He was a member of the Eunice Chapel Church of Christ. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Eunice Chapel Church of Christ. Leon Williams will officiate. The family will speak to friends following the service in the church. Burial will be in the Sladesville Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery at Sladesville. Surviving are a son, Adam Spencer and his wife, Ginger of Swan Quarter; two daughters, Jennifer Spencer of Bath and Doran Spencer of Kill Devil Hills.; the children’s mother, Jo Mayo Spencer of Mamie; a brother, Bryan Allen Spencer and wife, Marie of Scranton; a sister, Ellen Louise S. George Tilman Spencer
Mr. George Tilman Spencer, age 80, a resident of 1408 Hoff Road, Belhaven died Thursday, November15, 2007 at his home. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm on Sunday November 18, 2007 at Pantego Christian Church in Pantego officiated by Rev. James Bussell. Mr. Spencer was born in Beaufort County on February 13, 1927 to the late Harold Tilman Spencer and the late Myrtie Gertrude Martin Spencer. On November 16, 1954 George married Rae Gaskins who survives. Mr. Spencer served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he later worked for many years as a farmer. Mr. Spencer was a member of Pantego Christian Church and was a friend of “Dr. Bob” and Bill Wilson. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons: Robert H. Spencer of St. Joseph, Missouri, Hoyt T. Spencer of the home, “Tim” R. Spencer and his wife Sissy of Bath; one granddaughter: Alicia Spencer Wagaman and her husband Willie of Washington; one grandson: Nathan H. Spencer of Greenville; and two great granddaughters: Kayla Wagaman, Jordan Wagaman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by three brothers: Gene Richard Spencer, Clyde Bonner Spencer, Fredrick H. Spencer, and one sister: Susan Spencer Collins. Mrs. Mary Bell Bonner Spencer, 84, of 117 E. Eighth St., Washington, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Queen Chapel Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Terra Ceia community, Pantego, with Elder Dwight Spruill and the Rev. William M. Sawyer officiating. Burial will follow in Broad Creek Cemetery, Pantego. Mrs. Spencer was born in Beaufort County on July 11, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Martha Bowen Bonner and Parthina Jackson Bonner Sr. She attended the former Beaufort County High School, Pantego. On Dec. 23, 1943, she was married to Roscoe Spencer Sr., who preceded her in death. She was a lifelong member of Queen Chapel Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Terra Ceia community, Pantego. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Spencer Whitney and Doris Spencer White, both of Washington; two sons, Roscoe Spencer Jr. and Terry Iran Whitney, both of Washington; one sister, Mary Frances O’Neal of Belhaven; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ina Ruth Spencer Whitney; three sisters, Priscilla Gardner, Sarah Clark and Lucy Stanley and five brothers, Emanuel Bonner, Parthina Bonner Jr., Cleon Bonner, Willis Bonner and Timothy Bonner. Mr. Ronnie Lee Spencer, 52, of Washington, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Beaufort County Hospital. He attended the Beaufort County schools. He was married to Debra Moore, who survives. He lived in Paterson, N.J., for several years. Survivors include one daughter, Keschia Spencer of Paterson, N.J.; one son, Ronnie Spencer Jr. of Sanford, Fla.; one brother, Ruben Spencer Jr. of Washington; and two sisters, Evonda S. Mrs. Shirley “Sally” Donnell Collins Spencer, 48, of 8227 Slatestone Road, Washington, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. Mrs. Spencer was born in Norfolk, Va., on March 20, 1959. She was the daughter of Charlie Hopkins Sr. and the late Queen Esther Collins Waiver. She attended the Beaufort County Schools. She was a member of Cathedral of Fresh Fire Church, Pactolus. Survivors include six daughters, Freedom “Freedia” Spencer, Chaudney Spencer, Veronica Collins, Sherylinda “Pooky” Nelson, Khariyah Wilkins and Kaitlynn Wilkins, all of Washington; one son, Lewis Spencer of Chocowinity; seven sisters, Joyce Collins of Miami, Fla., Nellie Harris of Orlando, Fla., Shirley Moore of Chesapeake, Va., Evelyn Thomas of Houston, Texas, Jacqueline Lawrence of Pinetown, and Mollie Hopkins and Sherry Hopkins, both of Washington; eight brothers, Rodell Collins of Miami, Fla., Charlie “Bud” Hopkins Jr. of Pinetown, Vernon Hopkins and Randolph Hopkins, both of Bath, John Hopkins of Belhaven, Willie Hopkins of Columbia, Ga., Ronnie Hopkins of Columbia, S.C., and Terry Hopkins of Nashville; and five grandchildren. NORFOLK - Yvonne "Pepsi" Spencer of the 3000 block of Virginia Beach Blvd., died Jan. 28, 2008, in Richmond. Born in Washington, N.C., she was a nursing assistant. Survivors include four daughters, Twila, Tschoibi, Tashonda and Tashika Spencer; mother, Annie Spencer of Norfolk; three sisters, Gracie Underwood (Gregory), Sharon Gray (Antione) and Brenda Brantley (Bennie); three brothers, Joseph Williams (Joan), James Spencer (Evalia) and Aaron Spencer (Kim); four grandchildren, Chanderlia, TyShae, Khadeja and Tyvonne; 10 nieces, seven nephews, 13 great-nieces, 18 great-nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Rueben Spencer. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Olive Grove Baptist Church, 1034 Albert Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. Charles Wright. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hampton. The remains will be ready for viewing Monday from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Homes, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge. Dora Fields Hardy Spivey
RALEIGH - Mrs. Dora Fields Hardy Spivey, 89, died Tuesday, February 9, 1999 in Rex Hospital. Mrs. Spivey was born in Beaufort Co., N.C. on August 28, 1909 the daughter of the late Thomas Lemuel and Frances Elizabeth Foreman Hardy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Eugene Spivey and also three brothers, Francis S. Hardy, Dallas L. Hardy and Rev. Paul F. Hardy. Dora and Gene were married on February 4, 1945 and together operated Spivey's Grocery and Market in Raleigh until their retirement. She was a member of the Edenton Street United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mildred Hardy Doan and Eula Hardy Harris, both of Wendell; one brother, Wright Lupton Hardy and wife, Jane of Raleigh; also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews and friends, especially Avis Vick and Hilda Godwin. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Thursday, February 11, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11-12 noon Thursday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, N.C. Mrs. Sprouse was born in Beaufort Co. on December 31, 1956 to Leslie and Ethel Jones Dickinson. On March 8, 1974 she married Benny Ray Sprouse who survives. She was secretary for E.J. Tetterton Trucking, Inc. of Pinetown and was a member of Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Benny Ray Sprouse of the home, one daughter, Lisa S. Sawyer and her husband Perry of Franklinton, NC, one son, David W. Sprouse and wife Bobby Jo of Chocowinity, one brother, Lester Dickinson of Blounts Creek, two sisters, Joyce Woolard of Washington, Jean Jackson of Plymouth and four grandchildren, Abigail Sprouse, Dillon Sprouse, Ashley Sawyer and Nolan Sawyer. Mr. Mason Clayton Sprouse Sr., age 53, a resident of 8423 Old 97 Road in Pantego died on Monday September 10, 2007 at his home. Mr. Sprouse was born in Augusta County, Virginia on December 27, 1952 to Robert Sprouse Sr. and the late Mary Jane Simmon Sprouse. On December 27, 1982, he married the former Teresa Gale Gibbs who survives. John D. Spruill
John D. Spruill, 86, of Ambler, died Dec. 23 at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Born in Washington, N.C., Mr. Spruill moved to the Ambler area in 1988 after living for 20 years in Cape Cod. He worked for Colombian Carbon Corp., based in New York City, as a traffic engineer until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ambler. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta Field Spruill; a daughter, Joan S. Andren; two brothers, Louis H. and Horace C.; two sisters, Laura Swanner and Vivian Petura, and two grandchildren. Burial was private. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, Ridge and Butler Avenues. Arrangements were by Shaeff-Myers Funeral Home of Ambler. Julia Mayo Spruill
Julia Mayo Spruill, 84, of the 400 block of E. River St., a retired teachers' aide, died Aug. 21, 1995, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Spruill was born in Beaufort County, N.C., and was a member of Colerain United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was the widow of James Koria Spruill. Survivors include a son, James Gilbert Spruill of Colerain; and a sister, Dorothy Mayo Coram of Charleston, S.C. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Laura Early. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain. The family will receive friends at home. Melvin Duane Squibbs
Mr. Melvin Duane Squibbs, age 75, a resident of 261 Carrow Road, Chocowinity, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, April 13, 2007 at Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Chocowinity, conducted by Pastor Ronnie Gurganus. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington. Mr. Squibbs was born in Peanut, PA on November 8, 1931. He was the son of the late Robert Squibbs and Grace Leana Irwin Squibbs. Mr. Squibbs was a retired psychiatric aide with Torrance State Hospital in Blairsville, PA. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. While living in Blairsville, Mr. Squibbs was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. After moving to Chocowinity, he became a member and deacon of the Hodges Pentecostal Holiness Church. On August 13, 1954, Mr. Squibbs married the former Mary Catherine Bryan, who survives. Surviving with his wife are three sons, Franklin Duane Squibbs of Jacksonville, FL, Terry Lynn Squibbs of Portsmouth, VA, Bryan Keith Squibbs of East Lake, OH; two daughters, Darleen Ann Squibbs Lewis of Cincinnati, OH, Shirley Jean Squibbs Graham of Scottdale, PA; and nine grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Squibbs was preceded in death by a sister, three half sisters, and four brothers. Richard Len Squires
Mr. Richard Len Squires, age 59, a resident of 2998 Ephesus Church Road, Blounts Creek, NC died Thursday December 6, 2007 at his home. A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Sunday December 9, 2007 at Christ Vision Church officiated by Pastor Ray Webb. Richard was born in Beaufort County on March 31, 1948 son of the late Eloise Squires Berry. He was a 1966 graduate of the former Pantego High School. Richard was the former owner and operator of Bayside BP Station and Wrecker service, in Kill Devil Hills where he was an automobile and heavy equipment mechanic. He attended Christ Vision Church. Survivors include two daughters: Lisa Early of Manteo and Johanus Squires of West Virginia; two sons: Jason Squires of Greenville, NC and Ricky Brantley of Manteo; two sisters: Cindy McCraith of Houston, TX and Dale Edwards of Blounts Creek; two brothers: Carroll Berry of Washington and Jimmy Berry of Chocowinity and four grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his stepfather: James Berry. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Saturday December 8, 2007 at the home of Richard’s sister, Dale Edwards, located at 2998 Ephesus Church Road, Blounts Creek and also following the service on Sunday.
