Edna Inez Pugh White was called home on March 3, 2006, while at Norfolk General Hospital, Va. She was 85 years old. Edna spent the last years of her life at Britthaven of Outer Banks, Nags Head, NC. Although she endured the middle stages of dementia, she was otherwise healthy and her death was somewhat unexpected. She was born in Belhaven on January 6, 1921,
the second child of Samuel Leroy Pugh and Bertha Armittie Keech Pugh. Her siblings are Samuel Norville Pugh, Erma Ray Pugh Wilkins, Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Pugh Rose and Richard Wayne "Dick" Pugh. Edna is survived by her sister Lib Rose of Belhaven; sister-in-law Barbara Pugh of Swan Quarter; her children from her first marriage to Herman Dawson Hartlieb: Bunnie Lou Daniels of Wanchese, Sandra Faye "Sandy Patterson of Middle River, Md., Ronald Dawson "Ron" Hartlieb of Eldersburg, Md. and Cheryl Ann "Sherry" Holmstrom of Janesville, California. She has 9 grandchildren (6 in Md. and 3 in NC), 15 great-grandchildren (9 in Md. & 7 in NC) and 3 great-great-grandchildren (2 in Md. and 1 in NC). While at Britthaven, Edna participated in all of the activities that they had to offer. She enjoyed playing Bingo and the racehorse game, but her favorite activity was belonging to the "Britthaven Happy Ringers" as bell ringer #5. They are a bell choir of eight players that practice on Monday mornings and perform concerts in the local area. Edna always wanted to look her best so she would have her hair and nails done on a regular basis. Raised in the Pentecostal Church of God, she would attend church services every Sunday no matter which denomination taught the Gospel, as long as she could hear it and the music. Her favorite hymn was How Great Thou Art. Throughout her life Edna enjoyed having fun with her family and best friend Helen Foley. She liked singing, dancing, telling jokes, working crossword puzzles, sewing to make clothes, stuffed animals, and other craft projects. Edna kept a clean house, was a good cook, knew how to stretch a dollar, fought for her children, and stood up for what she believed in. You could often hear her say, "You get out of life what you put into it." She put a lot of herself into the life she led. All who knew Edna have been affected by her and will miss her. Edna's family would like to thank the staff of Britthaven of Outer Banks for taking such good care of her and treating her as a friend. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, June 4, 2006; pg. 10A)
