James D. Hollomon ~ circa 1832 - 1875 ~ Enlisted March 18, 1862 served until 1865 as a Private in the Confederate Infantry, Company "D" - 17th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, 2rd Organization from Bertie County, NC. Contributed by: Jim Hollomon

Cullen Capehart Shoulars: Enlisted as a Private in the Confederate Army on 6-15-1863 from Bertie County and fought in at least 10 battles. Private Shoulars was absent when his regiment mustered out on 4-28-1865 due to illness. Contributed by: Julius E. Shoulars

Enlisted in 1861 as a Private out of Bertie for a 6 mo tour. He served in Company “L” of the Bertie Volunteers Confederate Army. [DOB: 9-29-1840] He survived this tour of duty. He enlisted again on 1-23-1862 at the rank of 1st Sgt. out of Bertie Co., NC. He was wounded and captured near Hagerstown, MD the week of July 7th 1863. He was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lt. while a prisoner of the Union Army following death of 2nd Lt. Edward A. Rhodes at the Battle of Gettysburg, PA.
Lt. Clingman died of his wounds while being held a POW on 8-15 or 9-15-1863, his place of death was probably the prison camp at Point Lookout, MD. Contributed by: Lou Craig

Company L : Bertie Volunteers
Private: Resided in Bertie County (Roxobel/Kelford) where he enlisted on May 1, 1861 at the age of 25. Present or accounted for until mustered out on Nov 13, 1861 at Raleigh, NC. Later served as a Private in Companies B and C, Third Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery. Enlisted in Company B in Bertie County on April 19, 1862. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company C on February 14, 1863. Detailed to Quartermaster Department at Fort Carswell ~ Brunswick County, NC in Mar-Apr 1864. Absent detailed through October 1864 date of last available muster roll. Reported as absent without leave when paroled at Greensboro, NC on April 28, 1865.
