Welcomes You To The
Buncombe County,
North Carolina

Genealogical Web Page

Buncombe County was created 1791 from Burke & Rutherford Counties.

Nearly all useful genealogical county records up to about 1910 are in the North Carolina State Archives, 109 East Jones Street, Raleigh, NC. 27611. Counties where birth and deaths occurred kept a duplicate copy of the information sent to the state. After 1741, prior to marriage, one had the choice of publishing banns or buying a license which required posting of a bond. Surviving marriage bonds, are in the North Carolina State Archives. They contain the names of the bride and groom, bondsman and witness. The parish registers containing records of birth, death, marriages prior to 1820 have not survived.

The existing early land grants are at the Land Office, Secretary of State, Administration Building, Raleigh, NC 27603. They are also on microfilm in the State Archives.  All of the early land deeds are on microfilm at the Register of Deeds office.  Another land records source is the land entry book, which also is housed at the Register of Deeds Office.

The Buncombe County Register of Deeds has birth records and death from 1913, and marriage records from 1891.  The actual marriage licenses are incomplete, but most original records are in the Register of Deeds Office.  In addition, there are Marriage Registers, which give the name of the groom and the name of the bride, sometimes the ages of both and the place of residence as well as the date of marriage and the place of the marriage.  If no actual license exists, the office will copy the page from the Register.  Prior to 1868, marriage bonds were used, and there are very very few surviving marriage bonds for Buncombe County.   The few that do still exist are in the State Archives.  The death records from 1913 to 1929 are also at the Archives and Records Section, State Records Center, 215 North Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27602. All of the records fees would need to be verified.  Birth, death, and available marriage records may be obtain from the Register of Deeds Office at the address below.
