COMPANY F 2nd Calvary

Jehu REED was in Co F 2nd Tenn Calvary, he tried for 20 years to receive a pension, but was denighed. He was told many times that he had abandoned his post, but was, in fact, captured twice. He, nor his family ever recieved his pension.
Jehu was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Mashburn REED. Jehu's brother, Elbert, was in the same Company and was discharged July 6, 1865. Four other family members are buried in REED Chapel Cemetery: MASHBURN, J.C. - Co. F 10th Ten. Cav. no date; REED, Samuel B.(Jehu's brother) - Co B 40th Inf. no date; REED, Jasper (Jehu's brother) - Co K 5th Ten Mounted Inf 1-1-1865 died of measles;Jehu's father, and Robert REED, Co A Nat'l Guard NC under Capt. Bryson


Company G

William R. PAYNE enlisted October 22, 1861, transferred to G Company February 19, 1862, county of Cherokee. Promoted to Lieutenant August 9, 1863.

William R. Payne was born in 1834 in Monroe Co., TN. and died June 30, 1892, in Jack Co. TX. His parents were Thomas Payne and Elizabeth Cavett. He married Margaret Adaline Monday. Their children were: James Thomas Payne born 1854, Cherokee Co., NC; Elizabeth Payne Born May 26, 1857, Bradley Co., TN.; Francis Marion Payne Born Feb. 1860 Cherokee Co., NC; and John R. Payne Born Sept. 1864 Cherokee Co., NC.

William and Nancy Evaline Monday's Children were Andrew Jackson Payne born Jul. 18, 1866, Bradley Co., TN.; Albert Sidney Johnston Payne, born Oct. 9, 1867, Ballard Co., KY.; Dixie Victoria Payne born Sept. 9, 1870, Ballard Co., Ky.; Florence Arminda Payne born Nov. 29, 1872, Ballard Co., Ky.; Issac Lafayette Payne Born May 24, 1874, Ballard Co., Ky.; William Riley Payne Jr. Born Nov. 1, 1879, Arkansas; Dove Jenetta Payne Born July 5, 1882, Parker Co., Tx.; Josephine Cleveland Payne Born Feb. 5, 1885, Jack Co., Tx.; and Benjamin Franklin Payne Born Feb. 1, 1889, Vineyard City, Tx. 10. George Washington PAyne Born Feb. 1, 1889 ( Twins)


29th NC Infantry, Company A

Elisha A STANDRIDGE enlisted as a private at the age of 26 on June 17, 1861 in 29th NC Infantry, Company A. Elisha died as POW on December 31, 1862 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Alex DERREBERRY enlisted July 24, 1862 and was a 5th Sergeant. He was a 26 year old farmer at the time of enlistment, born in Burke County, NC. Alex was 5' 11" tall, with light hair, blue eyes and fair complexion. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin DERREBERRY & Susannah HIPPS. Contributed by Ron Jones

William L. DERREBERRYwas born in Burke County, NC was a 34 year old farmer when he enlisted July 24, 1862 and served as a Private. William was 5' 10" with dark hair, black eyes and a dark complexion. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin DERREBERRY and Susannah HIPPS. Contributed by Ron Jones

Robert DERREBERRYenlisted July 24, 1862 and was listed as Detailed. He was born in Burke County, NC and was a 31 year old farmer when he enlisted. Robert was 5' ?" tall, with dark hair, fair complexion and grey eyes. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin DERREBERRY and Susannah HIPPS. Contributed by Ron Jones

John McCamey DERREBERRY, known as "Came", was a 33 year old farmer when he enlisted July 24, 1862. He was a Private, 5' 10" tall with light hair, blue eyes and fair complexion. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin DERREBERRY and Susannah HIPPS. Contributed by Ron Jones


25th Regiment D Company-Infantry
N.C. Confederate Troops

Regimental History-Battles include Malvern Hill, Va., Sharpsburg, Md., Fredericksburg, Va. and Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Richard H SHARP, Private, son of Theodosha (Dosha) SHARP, was born in Rockingham County and resided in Cherokee County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Cherokee County at age 42, July 1, 1861. Present or accounted for until he was killed by accident by (a) sentinel on post, near Grahamville, South Carolina, on or about February 18, 1862. Contributed by Ron Jones

William W SHARP, private, middle name Wesley, oldest son of Richard H SHARP (above) was born in Rockingham County and resided in Cherokee County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Cherokee County at the of 21, June 1, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the abdomen at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Died In hospital at Richmond, Virginia, July 9, 1862 of wounds. Contributed by Ron Jones


Company A, 2nd Batallion Regiment-Cavalry

Thomas R MANCHESTERenlisted in 2nd NC cavalry (19th NC troops) on June 18, 1861 at the age of eighteen He was wounded and sent home to Murphy, NC to recuperate. Here he was captured by Union forces on February 18, 1864, He was ultimately sent to Fort Delaware Prison later that month. He died on January 22, 1865 as the result of a bayonet wound. He is buried with the other southern prisoners that died in captivity at Fort Delaware at Finn's Point, New Jersey.

Company B, 7th Batallion Regiment-Cavalry

William Montazuma MANCHESTERenlisted in the 7th NC Cavalry on February 15, 1863 at the age of 17. He served in Company B for a time and was later moved to Company F of the 6th NC Cavalry. He served until being paroled in Nash County, NC on April 20, 1865.

Thomas R MANCHESTER and William Montazuma MANCHESTER were the sons of William MANCHESTER. Wiliam MANCHESTER lived in Cherokee County prior to the civil war. He had two sons and two daughters. Both sons fought in the war for the Confederacy. William MANCHESTER is the great-great grandfather of Joe WEAVER of Midland, Texas who contributed this information.


29th Infantry
N.C. Confederate Troops

John Lee MASON - My great-grandfather enlisted out of Cherokee County at the start of the war. He served in the 29th NC infantry. He fought at Murfreesboro and was captured at Chickamauga. He spent the remainder of the war as a Union prisoner at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. After the war he returned to Murphy. Leon Sykes

John & Eve Caler HICKEY Sons

Robert C HICKEY born 1826, served in 16th Georgia Battalion, Co C; 3rd TN Mtd Co C; and 4th Reg.TN Inf. He married Sarah Ann Underwood 1/29/1851 in Union Co, GA. He died 9/21/1903 in Murphy and is buried in the McClelland Cemetery. Contributed by woodsgranny2aol.com

James Guinn HICKEY born 1836 served in the 25th GA Battalion and 3rd TN Mtd Co G. He married Ruth Jane Voyles and died 1913 in Turtletown, TN. Contributed by woodsgranny2aol.com

Henry LeRoy HICKEY born 1842 served in the 3rd TN Mtd Co G. He married Sarah E. DeHart Ray and died in 1882. He is buried at Liberty Baptist Cemeter, Liberty, NC Contributed by woodsgranny2aol.com

John L HICKEY born 1842 served in Thomas Legion, Walkers Battalion, Co A, 3rd Mtd. TN Co G. He married Margaret Tilley, Fannin Co, GA 1/24/1863. He was hanged in Murphy, NC October 24, 1863. Burial unknown. Contributed by woodsgranny2aol.com

George Britton HICKEY born 1840 served in Thomas Legion, Walkers Battalion, Co A, 3rd Mtd. TN Co G. He was hanged in Murphy, NC October 24, 1863. Burial unknown. Contributed by woodsgranny2aol.com
