The World War II page is dedicated to all Cherokee County relatives and citizens who were enlisted, fought or lost their lives as a result of service in World War II. If you have someone you'd like to honor, please contact me, Linda Miller with the details.


The following WWII veterans from Beaverdam served in the European theatre in World War II: Avery Allen, Dewey L. Beaver - German P.O.W., Franklin H. Cook, John R. Cook, Brydus or Brutus Dockery, Chester Farmer, Clifton Farmer, George Glen Farmer, Ross Garrett - killed in action; CHARLES R. RADFORD - killed in action, Gay Radford, Glen Radford, Howard L. Radford, James E. Radford, Lessard A. Radford, Marvin Radford, Ralph W. Radford, Wade Radford, Wayne Radford, and Ross Woody. Chess Bell served in the Pacific theatre; Robert Farmer and John T. Radford served in the US Navy.

Avery ALLEN, son of Willim David Allen and Maggie Farmer Allen, was born 9/6/1910 in the Beaverdam area of Cherokee County NC. He served in Europe during WW II.

Chess BELL was born to Edna Bell on 4/18/1920 in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee County, NC. He first served three years in the U.S. Army from 1938 to 1940, He reentered the Army and served with distinction in the 83 Quartermaster Corp during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He left the service with the rank of Sergeant at the end of the war and moved to Oregon where he worked in the logging industry until he was crippled in the 1950s in a logging accident. He returned to Cherokee County in the 1960s and lived there until his death 4/28/1968. He was laid to rest with full military honors in Old Unaka Baptist Church Cemetery. Lesard (L.D.) BELL was born 8/27/1922 to Edna Bell of Beaver Dam, Cherokee Co., NC. He served with distinction with the 5th Infantry Division as part of General Patton's Third Army's march across Europe during WWII. L.D. earned the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry's badge among other awards. He died 3/14/1994 in Cottage Grove, Oregon. "I am proud to call him my brother." Ivan Walker SMSgt USAF (Retired)

George Glen FARMER, son of John Ulysses Farmer and Molly Radford Farmer was born in Beaverdam, Cherokee County NC. He proudly served under General George Patton in the 3rd U.S. Army's drive across Europe during WWII.

Eastley HORTON, son of Hobert Horton and Elebie Garret Horton, was born 8/28/1926 in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee Co. NC. During and after WWII Eastley served in the Pacific theatre of operation with Company C, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, 3rd. Marine Division on Guam and Tinsin, China. After his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he and Blanche Radford were married and moved to West Chester, Ohio where they continue to make their home.

Gay RADFORD, son of Garland Radford and Bessie Brannon Radford, was born on 4/8/1924 in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee Co., NC. Gay served with distinction in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre of Operations in WWII. Among the awards he received was the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart for wounds which hospitalized him for three month, suffered on D-Day June 6, 1944. After his honorable discharge he moved to Charolette, NC where he lived with his family and worked as a printer until his untimely death on 10/15/1993. Gay was survived by his wife, Joyce, and son, Randall Radford, his parents and sisters, Gladys, Blanche, Grace, Ruby, Madge, and Phillis.

Glen RADFORD, son of Garland D. Radford and Bessie Woody Radford, was born in Beaverdam. He served in Europe during WWII. He was born on 1/1/1922 in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee Co., NC. Glen served with distinction in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre of Operations throughout WWII. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he moved to Oregon and worked in the logging industry for several years. He later moved to Lincoln Park Michigan where he passed away 4/27/2001. He is interred in Old Unaka Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherokee Co., NC. Glen was survived by a son Ronnie Radford and a daughter, Patsy Radford Barkai, and sisters, Gladys, Blanche, Grace, Ruby, Madge, and Phillis.

Howard L. RADFORD, son of Fred W. Radford and Mattie West Radford, was born in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee Co., NC. He entered the U.S. Army in 1937 or 1938 and remained until he retired in the 1960s. He served in the 8th Air Force in Europe during WWII.

Lessard A. RADFORD, son of Fred W. Radford and Mattie West Radford, resides in Beaverdam, Cherokee County NC. He served in th U.S. Army in Europe during WWII.

Marvin RADFORD, son of Clayborn Radford and Emma Bell Radford, was born in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee Co., NC in 1921. He served in Europe during WWII.

Ralph RADFORD, son of Garland Radford and Bessie Brannon Radford, was born on 11/7/1926 in Beaverdam Township, Cherokee Co. NC. Ralph served in the the U.S. Air Force, Security Police in several assignments until his untimely death in London, England on 1/23/1959. He rests in peace in Spokane, Washington, near his wifes home. He was survived by his wife, Wanda, and son, Terry, and daughter, Carolyn Radford. He was also survived by his parents and brothers Glen Radford and Gay Radford and sisters Gladys, Blanche, Grace, Ruby, Madge, and Phillis.

Twenty two men from the Beaver Dam community served in World War II. Many of them have died. If anyone would like to add their family member to this growing list of veterans not only from Hiwassee Dam, but anywhere in Cherokee County, contact Linda Miller with the details.


Carl Herman HICKEY, son of Gilbert Oscar and Martha Powell Hickey of Cherokee Co, NC, born Sept. 17,1922, married Lorena Allen daughter of Charlie and Lily Murphy Allen,also of Cherokee Co, NC.

Herman served in the US Army in Cannon Company, 320th Infantry, 35th Division,Gunner 603. He served in combat in France,Belgium,Germany and Luxemburg.

Herman's decorations are the EAME theatre ribbon, five bronze, two silver stars, the WWII Victory Medal, combat infantry badge, expert infantry badge, lapel button for no time lost under AW-107, and Good Conduct medal.

Herman Hickey is still active and stills makes his home in Cherokee Co,North Carolina. He is the father of Carl, Delbert and Richard Hickey, all of Cherokee County.


Vaughn Edward BARTON was born on April 4, 1914 in Cherokee County, NC. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Guatamala in defense of the Panama Canal Zone during World War II. After WWII, he continued service to his country with employment by the Tennessee Valley Authority as a public safety officer, retiring in 1974 with 31 years of service. He passed away on August 10, 1991 in Cherokee County.

Bascom RAMSEY, born on July 26, 1913 in Murphy, Cherokee County, NC, was the son of William McKinley Ramsey and Winnie Gertrude James. Bascom married on June 25, 1938 to Ruby Kate Kephart, born on July 30, 1918 in Cherokee County, NC, who was the daughter of Robert Perry Kephart and Fannie Mae Allen. Bascom's brother William Harold Ramsey married Ruby Kate's sister Carrie Lee Kephart. Bascom and Ruby had two daughters, Louise Ramsey and Carolyn Ramsey.

Benjamin F. RAMSEY

Donald W. RAMSEY, born on October 31, 1920 in Cherokee County, NC, and died May 2, 2000. He was the son of John Martin "Dock" Ramsey and Ethel Birdie Lovingood. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a First Sergeant. He fought in the Asiatic-Pacific area and participated in action against the Japanese on New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, Okinawa, Guadalcanal and the occupation of China. Donald married Elizabeth Jayne Ricks on June 30, 1946. Donald and Elizabeth had four sons:Donald Warren Ramsey, Jr., David Ricks Ramsey, Timothy Jeter Ramsey and George Perry Ramsey.

Gerald W. RAMSEY

Grady L. RAMSEY, born on February 17, 1916 in Cherokee County, NC, died on July 9, 1996 and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Knox County, TN. Grady was the son of John Martin "Dock" Ramsey and Ethel Birdie Lovingood. Grady married Thelma Flynn on August 1944. Grady and Thelma had two sons: Lee Martin Ramsey and Phil William Ramsey.

Herbert Jack RAMSEY, born on April 28, 1928 in Beaufort, NC. Herbert entered service on December 17, 1947 at Greenville AAB, S. C. His most significant duty assignment in the army was AU Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars and the Army of Occupation Medal for Japan. He was a Private First Class when he was honorably discharged at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on December 14, 1951. Herbert Jack Ramsey died on December 21, 1970 in Cherokee County, NC, is buried in the Mt. Liberty Cemetery in Cherokee County, NC, and was the son of Allen John Ramsey and Cora Gertrude Stiles. Jack married Monica Francis Kirkland, born on December 1, 1932 in Cherokee County, NC, died on March 19, 1976 in Cherokee County, NC, and is buried next to Jack in the Mt. Liberty Cemetery in Cherokee County, NC. Monica was the daughter of Winslow Ellis Kirkland and Ora Lee Ledford. Jack and Monica had three children: Becky Ramsey, Vickie Ramsey and Jacky Ramsey (m).

Horace RAMSEY, born on October 21, 1922 in Murphy, Cherokee County, NC, is the son of William McKinley Ramsey and Winnie Gertrude James. Horace married Armeda B. Gilliam.

Hubert Burton RAMSEY, born on October 3, 1912 in Cherokee County, NC, was the son of Wiley L. Ramsey and Ella Dorothy Stiles.

Johnny RAMSEY, born on March 13, 1929 in Cherokee County, NC, is the son of John Martin "Dock" Ramsey and Ethel Birdie Lovingood. Johnnie entered the service on January 5, 1949 at Columbia, S.C. His address at the time of enlistment was 606 Valley River Avenue, Murphy, NC. He was a Private First Class in the Army when he was honorably discharged on June 12, 1952. He received the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze service stars and the OCC Medal for Japan. Johnny married twice the first time to Patricia Marsey and had one daughter Denise Ann Ramsey; the second marriage was to Joann Raub.

Leonard RAMSEY, born on August 24, 1920 in Cherokee County, NC, is the son of Allen John Ramsey and Cora Gertrude Stiles. Leonard married to Edith Awbury, born on August 13, 1926. Leonard and Edith have two children: Gary Ramsey and Ricky Ramsey.

Marvin William RAMSEY, born on August 4, 1913 in Cherokee County, NC, died on 4 May 1984, was the son of John Martin "Dock" Ramsey and Ethel Birdie Lovingood. Marvin married Edna Gertrude Pace. Marvin and Edna had three children: Betty Jean Ramsey, Kathy Alice Ramsey and Randy Martin Ramsey.

William Harold RAMSEY, born on May 28, 1920 in Murphy, Cherokee County, NC, diedon January 14, 1993 in Cherokee County, NC, is buried in the Rogers Chapel Cemetery in Cherokee County, NC, and was the son of William McKinley Ramsey and Winnie Gertrude James. On January 10, 1943 in Cherokee County, NC "Harold" Ramsey married to Carrie Lee Kephart, born on December 14, 1926 in Cherokee County, NC. Carrie was the daughter of Robert Perry Kephart and Fannie Mae Allen. The children of Harold and Carrie Lee Kephart Ramsey are Roy Ramsey and Lee Ramsey.
