Introduction

The original marriage bonds of Chowan County N.C. are in the archives of the NC Historical Commission , Raleigh, NC. They are filed alphabetically by the groom, and may be consulted by the public. The originals of these abstracts are housed in, and shared by, the Shepard-Pruden Library, Edenton, Chowan Co., NC.

These Bonds were abstracted by a group of youths of Wake Co. NC, working on a National Youth Administration project, alphabetized by workers on the Historical Records Survey project of the Works Progress Administration and checked by Miss Mary Jones Jeffreys, employed by the Genealogical Society of Utah in cooperation with the NC Historical Commission.

The abbreviation "col." following the names of the bride and groom mean they are Negroes. (quoted from original)

The above compilation was typed and the index of brides was made under the supervision of the Genealogical Society of Utah, 80 N. Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. Typist: Miss Thelma Hill.

Chowan County was formed as one of the four original precincts in Albemarle Co. in 1670.

The act which authorized the marriage Bonds was passed in 1741 and remained the law until 1868 when the present form of marriage license was authorized.
