I am looking for any info. on Roy E. Smith, b. 16 Nov., 1876 in Clay Co., NC. His daughter told her children that he was a conductor for the Railroad and came through GA where he met Mary L. Silvers and married her in 1895. We do not have any info. except what was written in an old family Bible. Any help would be appreciated. This is my husband's grandfather.

His son, Ephriam KITCHENS, born (c)1786, listed his birthplace as Iredll Co. NC, and married Mary Pauline GLAZNER, born (c) 1786, daughter of George GLAZNER (c) 1755-1825, who also listed her birthplace as Iredell Co. NC. Stephen KITCHENS was listed in the 1800 Buncombe Co. NC census and the 1850 Henderson Co. census. Ephriam KITCHENS was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co. NC census. Jacob KITCHENS, born (c)1810 Buncombe Co. NC, died in Transylvania Co. NC after 1860. Listed in 1850 Henderson Co. NC census. The Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church in Shooting Creek section of Clay Co. NC was organized in 1838 on land that was part of the KITCHENS estate. Jason KITCHENS, was one of the first Deacons. Benjamin STAGGS, born (c)1810 listed in 1850 Transylvania Co. NC census. Robert STAGGS, born Sept 13, 1840 SC married April 24, 1864 in Trasylvania Co. Researching family of James NELSON b Dec 7-1809 Haywood Co d July 30, 1896-married Rheuemme (Renna) LEDFORD about 1845. Renna was born Jan 1 1827 and died Dec 1, 1898. They both are buried in Ledford's Chapel Cemetery, Hayesville, NC. Known children are: Sara Ann Talitha b 1846 who md Wyly P. I am looking for information on the family of David Ledford who was first listed on the Clay Co. census in the 1850's. He possibly had a father named Frederick living in the same house as he and his wife, whose name was either Betty or Dulcina. David had a son also name David who was either hung or shot for desertion during the Civil War. This younger David also had a brother named Center who served in the same Confederate Army unit. After the younger David was killed his wife and my great grandfather Ranz Ledford went into TN to recover his body. My grandfather was Terrell Ledford who lived in Hiawassee, Ga. his youngest daughter was Ruby Ledford who was my mother. I am trying to see if the Frederick was related to Peter Ledford, the Revolutionary War Vetern. Most all were buried in the old Ledford cemetery that is on the road to Jack Rabbitt Campground. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for Miles Fulbright\Fullbright who was listed in the 1870 Clay Co. census as living in the township of Hiwassee. Most of his family lived over in Haywood Co. I am not sure how long he may have lived in Clay Co. None of the researchers working on his family has ever found his wife. She may have been Cherokee and her first name may have been Elizabeth. There is a good possibility they married in Clay Co. during the Civil War. Does anyone have access to marriage records for that time period? Betty J. HolmesJOHN STEPHEN BELL (or J.S.) b 23 Aug 1854 in the part of Cherokee Co that became Clay Co in 1861. In the latter part of 1880's the family moved near Brasstown. He signed as Enumerator of the 1880 Clay Co Census, on which his family is listed. He served in the NC Legislature 1889 as Dist. 42 House Representative and 1891 as Senator from this same Dist. He married 1874 EMILY DITMORE. Children: AURORA 1875; HENRY JAMES 1877; ELIZABETH BELZORA 1878; VICTORIA 1880; WILLIAM THOMAS and twin ROBERT BURTON 1882; LUTHER VERNON 1884; IDA 1886; SAMUEL ALBERT 1888; AMERICA 1890; DAISY 1892 and JEFFERSON GENE 1894. Aurora, Victoria and Daisy died and are buried at Brasstown. John S. died 1918 in Crowell, Foard Co TX and Emily d 1906 Shawnee OK.

I am tring to find the family of James Marchell Ledford. He was born 8-12-1837 in Cherokee Co. and died 7-6-1905 in Monroe Co. Tn. Marchell served in Co. G or T 25th Regt. By 1870 Clay Co census, VERLINCH ANDERSON age 38 appears with her children, William 12, JOSEPHINE 10, Embry 8, and Sarah 6. No husband living in the household. WHO WAS Verlinch's husband? Would like to correspond with anyone researching the following names. Isaiah LEDFORD (b. ca. 1815 in Macon Co., NC) married Mary BARRETT (b. ca. 1820 in Clay Co., KY). Isaiah and Mary lived in the Shooting Creek area. (Note that Shooting Creek was located in Cherokee Co., but now in Clay Co.) They can be found on the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses in Cherokee Co., NC, with the following children: Ann Elizabeth LEDFORD (b. 2 Feb. 1846, d. 14 Feb. 1919); George W. LEDFORD (b. 3 Apr. 1848, d. 15 Mar. 1932); Laura (Lavina) LEDFORD (b. 1850, ca. 1860); and Nancy Louisa LEDFORD (b. 18 June 1857, d. 6 Nov. 1947). Ann married David MOSS and is buried in the Unaka Cemetery in Cherokee Co., NC. George W. married Mary MOSS and is buried in Shooting Creek, NC. Looking for info on my mother's family. She was born Mary Josephine Johnston in Hayesville, daughter of Robert Lee and Carrie Lee Anderson Johnston. I have information on the Anderson side back to my greatgrandfather, Captain James Stanhope Anderson (b:1/6/1835;d:12/23/1904) and his wife Josephine Aurelia Sabina Avaline Ketron (b:1/12/1845;d:7/29/1921). His parents were James Anderson and a Miss Farrington (first name unk). Her parents were Rev Ruben Griffith Ketron and Matilda Ann Rogers. Captain Anderson built the Clay Co Courthouse and was a representative to the State Legislature. On the Johnston side, I don't have much. My grandfather was Robert Lee Johnston, son of William Foster Johnston and Mary Pricilla Glenn. Besides my direct line, I'm looking for the children of each grandparent and their spouses. My mother is the last surviving child of Robert Lee and Carrie Lee Anderson Johnston and she would like to have this info to pass on to her grandchildren. Thanks.

James T. Johnston, Jr My great grandfather was William Foster Johnston of Clay Cty, NC. Died: 1893. His wife was Mary Priscilla Glenn. They had a number of children, and the ones I know about are: Robert, Thomas, Zebulon Vance and Andrew Hall. My grandfather is Zebulon Vance Johnston who came to Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia as a physician in 1920. His brother, A. Hall, was a lawyer in Ashville until about 1940; Thomas was a carpenter and builder and came to Calhoun, GA in the 1920s and built the first hospital for his brother (it still stands and is known as the Johnston-Hall Hospital), he lived in High Point, NC. I have learned that William Foster Johnston was born around Ashville, NC and in the early 1880s sold his farm near Limestone Community to George Vanderbilt and moved to Clay County. He is buried in the Methodist cemetary in Hayesville, however, his wife, Prescilla is not. I am interested in knowing where Priscilla is buried and more about William Foster's ancestors. Isaac moved his young children to GA, settling in Dalton, Whitfield County, GA. Roy Elbert SMITH married Mary Louisa SILVERS on 21 Sept 1895 in Gilmer County, GA, d. 06 Mar 1947 Whitfield County, GA. Mary Louisa SILVERS SMITH b. 03 Jan 1874 Gilmer County, GA, d. 26 Oct 1950 Whitfield County, GA. She was the daughter of Levi and Elizabeth (PARKER)SILVERS. Would like to learn the burial site for Sarah Elizabeth HOOPER SMITH, the parents and siblings for Sarah, the marriage date for she and Isaac. Any information appreciated.

Bobby E. Ledford Looking for information on marriage record of Orville LEDFORD (my ggfather), son of Jason and Mary Ledford, to Rachel Adeline (Addie) TROUT, daughter of Noah and Martha TROUT, Hiwassee, July 15, 1880. Orville and Addie had four children, Edgar (my gfather), Lassie, Daisy and Mae. Addie and her three daughters migrated to Columbus, GA (my home) in early 1900's. She is listed in the 1900 Monroe County, TN census. Her first two children, Edgar and Lassie were born in NC and the other two girls wer born in TN. My gfather Edgar migrated to Columbus, GA after his mother and three sisters were already here. Edgar was married to Minnie Elvira RODGERS, and they had five boys, David, Walter Roscoe, Charlie Thomas, Earl Lewis (my father) and another son who was killed in TN in a hunting accident ???. Also, anyone having information on who Jason's (my gggfather) parents were, I would appreciate any help. At the time of this marriage of Orville, Jason Ledford would have been approximately 50 years old, and Mary would been 44, according to the 1860 Cherokee County, NC census. The children of Jason and Mary listed in the 1860 census were Thaddeus L., 10, David E. M. 9, Elizabeth 7, Nancy 5, Marfina 4, and Orville 1.

His first name might have been Arthur, but he went by Frank. According to my mother, he lived there on a farm with his wife Mary Ann (Barker)Williams during the 1930's. He may have lived in the town of Hayesville. I would like to find out when he died and if and when they were married in Clay county. Thank you.

Ralph CheekElisha Cheek moved to Clay County in the 1870's, married a Lavina Holmes, and died in 1923. He was reported to have been in the Civil War. I'm trying to see if he was my great grandfather, who disappeared from Sparta, TN about that time.

Don GallowayI am searching for the parents of my great-grandfather, Weaver H. Galloway. I know he lived in and was married in Clay County in 1892. His son, Walter (my grandfather) was born in Hayesville around 1900. So, I am assuming that Weaver Galloway was living there, but I don't know if he was born there, and I haven't been able to find his parents. I live in Ohio, and any reference material I need from other parts of the country I have to order through the County library here. James M. MossI am trying to reconstruct and correct errors in family history relative to the Moss family who were among the early settlers in Clay Co. They were related by marriage to the Killians and Moores, moving to Clay Co. from Macon Co., and originating in Tidewater Va from England. My grandfather was Fred A. Moss, his father was James Madison Moss, his mother Ora Savannah (Russell) Moss was the first postmistress for the Tusquitee Post Office. The family lived along Shooting Creek, and one was minister of the Moss Memorial Church.

Their son, my great-grandfather Leander Alny Kerby was born Clay Count 12/9/1844. He was a Confederate soldier and was captured at Cumberland Gap, TN and spent 2 1/2 years as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Illinois. He married Charity Pauline Queen, daughter of Henson &Zilpha Glass Queen on 5/22/1870. In 1872, they left NC\ along with their infant daughter Letha Caroline and Leander's brother Jasper &Uncle,John Parker Kerby. The land owned by the family before the rest went to Texas is in Oak Forest now owned by the Penland family. Leander's sister Annie married John Howard in Hiawassee section.
