More About D-OGS
The Durham-Orange Genealogical Society is
an organization for people interested in
family history. Our members include a variety
of persons - people new to genealogy,
experienced researchers and transcribers,
published genealogists and professionals.
We are interested in facilitating the study of
genealogy through lectures
and workshops
and in the preservation of family records. We
try to promote the
collection and distribution
of church, business and personal information
which
will assist researchers in their quest to
find their ancestors.
We encourage such projects as transcribing original documents like tax records,
deeds,
wills, letters and Bible records, and extracting
genealogical material from
old newspapers
and census records. We serve the public by
providing assistance to
researchers in the
Durham County Public Library and by
answering mail inquiries.
We maintain a
Website where we post research and
society
information and an e-mail address where we
can respond to questions in a
timely manner.

- Our regular meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month.
We usually
invite a speaker to talk about some topic of genealogical interest.
- The meetings are usually held at the Duke Homestead Visitor Center
and Tobacco
Museum, at 2828 Duke Homestead Road, Durham (near the Guess Road
(Exit 175) on
Interstate 85)
at 7 pm, but you should always check our website
to be sure about TIME, LOCATION and PROGRAM.
- The Computer Special Interest Group (C-SIG) meets on the second
Saturday of
the month at 9 a.m. and are usually held at the Chapel Hill Library downstairs in the small conference room. Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC Map!
These meetings typically include lively discussions,
sharing experiences,
and Q&A. Attendees range from folks thinking about getting a
computer
to those with years of computer experience. Attendees have experience
with
a wide range of genealogical software packages.
You should always check our website
to be sure about TIME
and LOCATION and PROGRAM.
- August is traditionally our 'Show and Tell' month, when members
get to
talk about their own triumphs and tribulations in their research.
- Officer elections are held in November.
- In December we celebrate the Society's 'birthday' at a
restaurant in
Durham or Orange County.
- Our members are involved in numerous projects in addition to researching
their own family history. Some past projects have included: publishing selected
Orange
County tax records, indexing the 1920 census of Orange County, and
publishing an
index to the Herald Sun obituaries for selected years.
We also respond to inquiries
and volunteer at Durham County Public Library
on Saturday mornings to assist people
in their family research.
- Annual Membership Dues are $20 per year. This includes a periodic journal, Trading
Path, with information of enduring genealogical value on old Orange County and
North Carolina subjects, plus queries from both members and non-members, surnames,
member information, happenings and general genealogical announcements.
Member submissions are encouraged.
Membership also includes a monthly newsletter with local happenings, calendar of
events and short articles of general genealogical interest. This newsletter is made
available electronically for those with internet access and mailed to other members.
