WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina possesses valuable historical and genealogical resources dating to the earliest European settlement of North America; and
WHEREAS, there is a growing interest in the research use of these resources by scholars and the general public for family history, genealogical and other purposes; and
WHEREAS, the Division of Archives & History of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources is entrusted and empowered to make these resources available to the public; and
WHEREAS, new technologies such as computers, networks, and Internet tools are providing opportunities to make these resources available worldwide to those who have an interest in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, these technologies are more efficient in providing broad and instant access on a more secure basis than is possible today meaning that the public's return on its investment is magnified; and
WHEREAS, the investment of additional State resources in technology, personnel, training and promotion can bring the capabilities of our State up to the level of other states who are currently using technology to benefit their citizens-,
THEREFORE, the Board of Directors of the Durham-Orange Genealogical Society urges members of the General Assembly and other public officials to embark on a course of action to bring about a renewed and increased investment in the State Archives to provide a state-of-the-art capability that will reinforce our citizens' pride in our heritage and demonstrate our State's position as a leader in providing efficient and cost effective services through the use of technology.
