9184.  HISTORY OF GREAT HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH PERQUIMANS COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

It would not be possible to find any additional information about Great Hope Baptist Church and its members, past and present, as the following is a partial list of what this book contains: The church was organized in 1869 and early religious history Perquimans County, NC is included as well as specifically in the area known as Ballahack, or Bear Swamp District.  There are excerpts and a summary of church minutes from 1895-2003 and the first membership rolls.  Of particular interest are the names and dates of those buried in the Great Hope cemetery.  There is a list of the pastors from 1869-2003 along with photos and biographies of many as well as Perquimans County marriages performed by different pastors 1867-1879.  The Great Hope Baptist Church Preamble & Rules of Decorum also appear along with information and photos of the 125th anniversary in 1994.  Perhaps the most impressive section is the 37 pages of three or four line bios of members from 1869-2002.  Birth dates/spouses/parents, etc. are furnished in the bios.  There are 22 pages of photos of church member past and present.  For additional pleasurable and informative reading is a short history of Ballahack Schoolhouse along with group photos of children in 1915/1917/1923-24/1935 and 1938.  This is truly a wonderful and complete book and would be one of the greatest additions you could have in your personal genealogy library.

9282 – It’s My Birthday !! Volume 1 Northeastern North Carolina Area Births 1653-1899

232 pages of birth data which occurred prior to birth registration in NC.  Birth information is available for many of our ancestors, just not in the form of a “birth certificate.”  This collection shows the scope of the data which is out there for the taking.  Celeste Beavers has collected these names and dates from Pasquotank and Camden death records, Pasquotank and Camden delayed birth records, Pasquotank and Camden marriage indexes, microfilm of Old Albemarle records for the Pasquotank and Perquimans Precinct, minutes from assorted church records and Bible records.  Some just give year or month while some give complete data including place of birth such as George Annah (Walker) Boyd who was born 13 Mar 1870 in Summerville SC.  Ms. Beavers gives parents and spouse where documented and the best part – she tells you exactly where she found the data so you can get the data from the primary source if you desire.  This is a great addition to the few vital records which survive for the area and she has more books of this type in the works.

Over 1700 deaths including many from NC.   These records start with the statewide collection of death information in Virginia.  Although a large number of these people were born in NC, the certificate doesn’t identify where they were born as the form just asks for the state.  The data abstracted is name, place of death, date of death, age, race, sex, status, place of birth, date of birth, parents, occupation and where they are buried.  All of the information is not available on all of the certificates.   By Sharon Rea Gable and Truitt M. 9293. CAMDEN COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA EXTANT TAX RECORDS 1782 – 1890

Although this is a large time period the key word in this title is “extant.”  The book contains what appears to be complete tax lists for 1782, 1790, 1791, 1792, 1795 and 1815.  It has tax lists for the Court House Township for 1877 (or 1879) and 1883.  Other than that it contains bits and pieces of tax data such as some jury payments issued from 1858 through 1861 which were used to pay tax bills in 1861.  The records contained in this book appear to the all surviving tax lists for Camden County since it’s formation in 1777.

9294 – Elizabeth City North Carolina “Economist” Newspaper (Extant Issues) 1875-1906

The late Greg Williams abstracted interesting items from the local newspaper for its genealogical treasurers.  Although we’d always like more than what was abstracted, with his work we at least have the issue which included the “list of insolvents” or the list of Confederate veterans who attended the reunion or the family members mentioned in those long obituaries of days gone by.  Armed with that information we can borrow the microfilm and get all the detail.  As far as what he did abstract – hundreds of names of our relatives in Camden, Currituck, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Gates, Chowan, Dare, Bertie, Tyrrell, Washington, Martin, Hyde and more.  He includes people who died or married in other states with ties to NE NC.  Newspapers of the past were the “internet” of their day – you’ll find dates for things you had given up on finding including two dates of birth from the late 1700s and birth locations for NE NC people like Saxony Germany, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and more.

9295 - 1930 Census Camden County North Carolina

Although most people use tools like Ancestry or Family Search to look at census records, there are still those of us who like to have a hard copy in our hands.  It’s easier when you can look at the neighbors without having to “translate” the handwriting and of course a census abstract completed by a Camden County native or researcher has done all the “translations” and done them correctly.  Willard and Thelma Forbes copied the 1930 census (before it was readily available on the internet) and Florence Till and her daughter Beth Thurman compiled and indexed the census.  We thank Thelma (Willard died in 2012), Florence and Beth for allowing the society to publish this book which they put together many years ago.  Please note – they also allowed us to keep the proceeds from the book (thanks).  The book is divided by the three townships (Shiloh, South Mills, and Camden Courthouse).  You’ll so find some tidbits in there such as Adelaide Harrison, the mother of Celus G. Harrion was living in the household but omitted from the census.

9296. Norfolk County Virginia Guardian Accounts 1784-1866

All guardians did not file annual accounts of the orphan’s estate as required by law.  All guardians who filed accounts did not have a surviving bond indicating that they had taken over the estate.  Although this is abstraction of interesting details of the accounts it shows the amount of data which can be gleaned from guardian accounts.

Guardian accounts reveal not only items about the support and maintenance of the ward, but items affecting his or her life and the filings of the account.  In this book there are over 50 marriages mentioned or implied of which almost half are not found in the abstracted records of Norfolk County or the surrounding counties.  The accounts sometimes contain birth dates, years when the orphan comes of age and takes over his estate, trips such as one to Calcutta, trips to avoid the Yellow Fever, deaths of the orphan with either exact dates or implied dates where the estate pays for wine or rum or digs the grave as well as the listing of slaves which when combined with tithable records helps track an individual family including the females.

This book covers Guardian Account books 1 through book 8 which includes the period of the Civil War and the devastating impact which the loss of slaves and the purchase of Confederate money had on those orphans.  The accounts also show the inter-relationship between Norfolk County and northeastern NC with lands in NC being sold and attending schools in NC.  In one case (the Edney orphans) they are actually found living in Pasquotank County while their guardian was filing his accounts in Norfolk County.

9297.  Pasquotank County North Carolina Will Abstracts 1720-1880

There are a number of books abstracting Pasquotank County will information…some just have names, some like the ones in Pasquotank County Historical Yearbook Volume 3 have the written date but not the date it was proved.  All of them seem to be lacking something and this could be it.  She states in her preface that these are the wills not found in the J. Bryan Grimes book of 1910, but it’s that and more.  She has compared the wills found in the two sets of will books and the original wills.  She notes items which are different such as the will of John Broshir in 1773.  She notes that when the will was written in the will books the name was copied as John Brothers….how many people have linked their ancestry to John Brothers who didn’t write a will in 1773 and how many people needed to find another Broshir in 1773 and couldn’t unless they were looking at the original wills in Raleigh?  She also lists wills such as the one for Margaret Needham in 1730 which was not included in the will books and therefore wasn’t in the will abstracts done in the past.  There are also subtle differences like the first will in her book for Mary Ackiss in 1811.  She lists the date as 2 August 1811 while White lists the date as 22 August 1811.  She lists one of the witnesses as William Laboyteaux while White lists it as Laboytrana.  The Pasquotank Yearbook doesn’t list this will at all.

Paschal also includes a great introduction explaining the confusing numbering system for Pasquotank wills and her opinion of why they are numbered that way as well as a great review of the laws of NC and how they affected the wills.  And for those who are new to genealogy (or may have forgotten) she includes a list of terminology such as the multiple meanings of the word cousin and alias.

So even if you have a book of abstracted Pasquotank County wills you need this book too.

9298. Norfolk County Virginia Orphans and Bastards From Extant Minute Books 1738-1852

Over 2700 orphans or infants in Norfolk County not covered by surviving guardian bonds or surviving guardian accounts, several with links into NC.  Some such as the Edney orphans have obvious links into NC with the entry stating that Benjamin and George Edney chose their guardian before Wilson Spence a Justice of the Peace for Pasquotank County.  Some of the links are more obscure but for those knowing the NE NC surnames they will stick out such as James McB. Old being a guardian - his middle name abbreviated as McB. being McBride or the entry involving Wilson Whitehurst and his wife Martha Ann McPherson or the suit of all the adult Hintons (from Pasquotank County) vs the infant Hintons in Norfolk County for the sale of two tracts of land.

Since slaves were taxed based on age, there are a number of entries where slaves were taken into court so that the age could officially be judged and recorded.  Free Negroes had to be registered with the county and there are several entries where they were taken before the court to get copies of their "Register."  Infants, black, white, Indian or mixed, were often apprenticed out until they came of age.  These entries are also included which might help you identify those "extra mouths" you find in the pre-1840 census.

Since a number of Minute Books are not indexed, this is insight into those books.  Even for the ones which are indexed the indexes only contain the main surnames for court cases...infants didn't always have one of those main surnames.  Minute Books show the squabbles over slaves and land as well as debt
