9184.  HISTORY OF GREAT HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH PERQUIMANS COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

It would not be possible to find any additional information about Great Hope Baptist Church and its members, past and present, as the following is a partial list of what this book contains: The church was organized in 1869 and early religious history Perquimans County, NC is included as well as specifically in the area known as Ballahack, or Bear Swamp District.  There are excerpts and a summary of church minutes from 1895-2003 and the first membership rolls.  Of particular interest are the names and dates of those buried in the Great Hope cemetery.  There is a list of the pastors from 1869-2003 along with photos and biographies of many as well as Perquimans County marriages performed by different pastors 1867-1879.  The Great Hope Baptist Church Preamble & Rules of Decorum also appear along with information and photos of the 125th anniversary in 1994.  Perhaps the most impressive section is the 37 pages of three or four line bios of members from 1869-2002.  Birth dates/spouses/parents, etc. are furnished in the bios.  There are 22 pages of photos of church member past and present.  For additional pleasurable and informative reading is a short history of Ballahack Schoolhouse along with group photos of children in 1915/1917/1923-24/1935 and 1938.  This is truly a wonderful and complete book and would be one of the greatest additions you could have in your personal genealogy library.

This book is larger than the first volume with 6292 marriages which were reported on licenses or returns most all of which have place of birth and parents for the parties being married.  There are also 540 marriages on “index cards” where the marriage license/return has been lost over the years.  Of the 6292 which report a place of birth 10% of the males and 10% of the females have reported a place of birth in one of the counties which FRS covers. 9258. NORFOLK COUNTY VIRGINIA MARRIAGE LICENSES 1850-1899 (non-white) Volume III 

This book has 5,735 marriage licenses or returns most all of which lists place of birth and parents for both parties.  Non-white refers to any person so designated by the Register of Deeds in writing the license.  Races include African-American, Indian and “mixed blood.  Or “mixed blood of Indian descent.” In some returns you will see the person listed as colored and in another the same person is listed as Indian or mixed blood as race was mainly a perception.  The book also contains information from 59 index cards which appear to be non-white marriages for which the license/return has been lost.  Of the grooms listed, 30% claimed their place of birth as NC while 25% of the brides listed their place of birth as NC. 13% of the grooms and 11% of the brides have reported a place of birth in one of the counties which FRS covers. 9265. NORFOLK COUNTY VIRGINIA 1844 TITHABLES

This book contains 3,292 entries covering Portsmouth and Elizabeth River Parish, St. Brides Parish and the town of Portsmouth from the 1844 Tithable book found in the Circuit Court records room in Chesapeake VA.  It is a combination of the personal property tax and the land tax.  There were 4,629 white tithables (males over 16) charged as well as 266 free negros.  Of the people listed in the book 57 were listed as not living in Norfolk County including 14 from North Carolina.  As with most Norfolk County books it’s peppered with names from northeastern NC such as Etheridge, Savills, Creekmur, Dozier, Douge, Fentress, Halstead and Whitehurst. At 242 pages this family book has a lot of great information.  Being a very experienced genealogist Ray starts by explaining what all genealogist need to know about names, dates, places, etc.  Since this book spans 400 years, all of the variants come into play as well as multiple counties.  The book is well researched, well written and like all genealogist should do, well documented.  Ray has over 400 footnotes explaining sources and customs as well as listing references for all the sections in his book.  The reader can also find little gems like the family tradition that Elisha Umphlett shot “Stonewall” Jackson as Ray puts his ancestors in the context of the times.

9282 – It’s My Birthday !! Volume 1 Northeastern North Carolina Area Births 1653-1899

232 pages of birth data which occurred prior to birth registration in NC.  Birth information is available for many of our ancestors, just not in the form of a “birth certificate.”  This collection shows the scope of the data which is out there for the taking.  Celeste Beavers has collected these names and dates from Pasquotank and Camden death records, Pasquotank and Camden delayed birth records, Pasquotank and Camden marriage indexes, microfilm of Old Albemarle records for the Pasquotank and Perquimans Precinct, minutes from assorted church records and Bible records.  Some just give year or month while some give complete data including place of birth such as George Annah (Walker) Boyd who was born 13 Mar 1870 in Summerville SC.  Ms. Beavers gives parents and spouse where documented and the best part – she tells you exactly where she found the data so you can get the data from the primary source if you desire.  This is a great addition to the few vital records which survive for the area and she has more books of this type in the works.
