Also a few Caldwell's buried there. This one is listed in a book of cemeteries. Can't remember where I copied it, maybe state archives in Raleigh????? 2) Hemphill area off US-276 west. Red Maple Ln. to Higher Ground Ridge. Buried there is Joshua H. Allison, b. 3-2-1845, d. 2-22-1935 buried there. Also some Howells. It was Buchanan Cemetry Rd before 911 Change. The trailer beside this cemetry has 166 Pinewood Dr as the address. Misc. Locations Sunburst Cemetery is on the Champion Paper mill property Burnett Siding Baptist Church Cemetery - cemetery is not right with church, would advise watching and preparing for snakes Fulbright Cemetry in Rogers Cove, Lake Junaluska Unnamed Cemetery on the Jonathan Creek side of Utah Mountain in Haywood County that few people know about, it is a little cemetery that has no markers. Used to be field rock markers but they are probably gone by now. The cemetery is on property that once belonged to my great grand father. It can be seen from the Jonathan Creek road. There are Wyatt's, Buff's and others buried in this cemetery. Iron Duff isn't really a town, just a mountain farming community in a pretty valley. Not sure if it even has a post office any more. The area was settled pretty early. The churches with cemeteries, Iron Duff Baptist and Davis Chapel Methodist, are both in the heart of the valley and easily spotted. Davis Chapel is white frame and sits up on a knoll. Iron Duff Baptist is a new red brick structure (replacing the old frame building which burned a few years ago. Riverside Cemetary just off Lake Logan Rd., on Inman Branch Rd. Lake Logan Cemetery For Help with translating the Latin, Italian epitaphs and other documents, contact Arthur Urbano. Arthur is a divinity student at Harvard Divinity School. He does charge a small fee per word. Their newsletter, BALSAM ROOTS, is published quarterly (Feb, May, Aug, Nov). Meetings are the last Tuesday of the month. They also have a Resource Center in Waynesville open Friday afternoons to help the beginning genealogist get started, and to aid the experienced researcher. Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society and Library Send mail to P.O. Box 2122, Asheville, NC 28802 Location: 85 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, NC 28805 Phone: 704-253-1894 The society services the area of western NC known as "Old Buncombe County". This includes the modern day counties of Buncombe, Madison, Haywood, Henderson, Transylvania, Yancey, Jackson, Macon, Clay, Cherokee, Graham and Swain counties. The newletter, "A Lot of Bunkum" is published quarterly. Other offerings include numerous books for sale which cover topics on genealogy in western North Carolina, and workshops for genealogists. The Smoky Mountain Historical Society includes the eastern Tennessee Counties of Cocke, Sevier and Blount. Many Haywood county families moved back and forth across the NC-TN state line and these counties are closely linked to Haywood County genealogy. |

Saturdays from 9am to 5pm and Sundays from 1:30 to 5pm. The library has a North Carolina room which contains many local family histories, assorted books on Haywood County and on surrounding counties, a clipping file, and loose papers file, as well as Haywood county census records, marriage records, deeds, and court records on microfilm. They also have the Latter Day Saints Family Search available on CD-Rom. |
