Directions to the Cemeteries of Haywood County
~ and ~ Haywood County Deaths and Burials

These books are research tools that guide researchers to information that is available in the library and in the county court house and fill gaps in information that previously was available.   Directions, revised in 2003 and still "a work in progress", incorporates information about previously unreported cemeteries that Enterprise-Mountaineer readers reported in response to the society's appeal.   George Augustus Miller's seven books are out of print, but copies are available for on-site research at the Haywood County Library, Waynesville branch, and at the society's Resource Center.  Death certificates are available in the Register of Deeds office for persons who died in Haywood County after 1913.

  • Haywood County Deaths and Burials, published in March, 2002, starts where Miller left off in his 7th book (obituaries, 1985) and includes information collected from local funeral homes about persons whose deaths occurred outside of Haywood County in 1986 through 1995.  The cost is $10 plus $0.70 NC sales tax if purchased in NC plus $3.00 shipping and handling if mailed.
  • Directions to the Cemeteries of Haywood County, revised Sept. 2003.  This book updates George Miller's directions to the cemeteries he visited prior to his publication of "Cemeteries and Graveyards of Haywood County" in 1979, and includes directions and information about newly identified cemeteries.  It is comb (spiral) -bound, with 68 easy-to-copy pages.  The cost is $15 plus $1.05 NC sales tax if purchased in NC plus $3.00 shipping and handling if mailed.

"Your Letter Came to Hand in Due Time:
The News from Jonathan Creek, 1858-1897"

Transcribed, edited and annotated by Betsy C. Farlow

A collection of 52 original letters written by James M. Parks, resident of Jonathan Creek, to his son, William M. Parks, who lived in Union County, NC.  Parks was a prominent and highly-respected citizen of Haywood County after he moved there abt. 1854 from Mecklenburg County  He was a school teacher, farmer and surveyor.  He surveyed many of the huge tracts of land owned by the Loves and others.  He prospered during a time when many others did not.  He believed that excess funds should be reinvested in the economy, thus loaned money to many of his neighbors, who are named in the letters.  He has been largely forgotten since he has no descendants named Parks in the county.

Parks had two wives and two sets of children.   His (second) wife at the time he moved to Haywood County was Louisa Rowann Parks (maiden name).  They became the parents of two children, Sarah H. and James A. Parks.  James A. never married, thus the family surname faded from view.  Sarah H. (Sally) married Frank Alexander Marion Boyd, son of neighbors Robert and Elizabeth Garrett Boyd.  Sally and Frank had two children, Fannie Louisa and James Robert.  Fannie married into the Welch family.

Dozens of persons mentioned in the letters are identified, many from "The Annals of Haywood County" by W. C. Allen.  Parks comments on the state of the crops and the weather; the economy; the politics of the county, state and nation; his work as surveyor; the neighborhood gossip; his beloved First Presbyterian Church and its ministers; and local catastrophes and natural phenomena such as the spectacular meteoric shower of 1833.

Cost: $16.95 plus $1.19 sales tax for NC residents only.  $2.50 shipping and handling if ordered by mail from Betsy C. Farlow, 1503 Von Bora Court, Burlington, NC 27215-9742.   Also available from The Osondu Booksellers on Main Street in Waynesville.
