THE CONARD FAMILY BURIAL SITE, AKA THE SHOEBOX CEMETERY

Located in the Campbell Creek area of Maggie Valley. From the courthouse, follow US 276N for 2.6 miles to its intersection with US 19. Turn left and continue on 276N for 2.3 miles to Dellwood where the routes separate. Here, US19S leads to Maggie Valley. Proceed west on US19 for 5.0 miles and turn left into Campbell Creek Rd. Continue south for 0.3 miles to Johnson Branch Rd and turn left, then take the next right in about 0.1 miles into Caldwell Rd. After 0.95 miles turn right and cross a bridge over Campbell Creek, proceed about 0.1 miles and turn right onto Davy Crockett Rd.. Almost immediately turn right onto Serenity La., which loops around the end of a small knoll and pull off on the left side of the road. The site is on the left end of the small knoll below you.

Bart Campbell, who guided us to this site, said that it used to be marked with three white flint rocks about the size of a half-gallon milk container, but they are no longer at the site. The road around the knoll is relatively recent and perhaps they were removed at that time. This site is the burial site of some of the 17 or more children of John Henry Conard and is about 200 yards from the site of the Conard home. It dates form the influenza epidemic in the WW I era. According to Bart, when one of the children died, John Henry took a board off the house and made a small box for the burial. Becky Howell checked with a couple of her old resident sources and they confirm that the Conard Burial Site and the Shoebox Cemetery are most likely the same place. They say that there are 8 - 9 graves there. They didn't know about any adult cremains being scattered there as one source had reported - which doesn't say that they weren't, just that we probably will never know for sure whether Grammy was scattered with her grandbabies.

GLAVICH-GRAVESITES

There are two single grave sites on the property presently owned by Mrs.Glenda Glavich on Underwood Cove Rd. The first, and oldest, is at the top of the ridge under an ironwood tree where the ashes of Frederic M. Glavich were scattered. It is marked with a bronze WWII veterans plaque which reads:

FREDERICK M. GLAVICH

PVT U.S. ARMY

WORLD WAR II

APR 29 1926 MAY 31 1987

The second site is that of Frederick's son Ronald E. Glavich. This site is marked with a large headstone and bronze veterans footstone. The headstone reads:

GLAVICH

RONALD E

JULY 15 1949 NOV 6 2002

Located in the Ratcliffe Cove area. From the courthouse, go north on Business 23 (North Main St.) for 1.2 miles to Ratcliffe Cove Rd.(SR1813), turn left and continue for 0.9 miles to Dock Ratcliffe Rd. Turn right and then turn right at the next street, Underwood Cove Rd., and proceed for 0.6 miles to Rumbling Gap Trail. Ronald's grave is just to the right of the road in 0.2 miles.

LENOIR SLAVE BURIAL GROUND

The location of this old burial ground, located in the Cruso area, can only be approximated. Based on recollections of those who remember the time when there were still remnants of the site visible, it appears to be on the east side of Burnett Cove Rd. about 0.75 miles from Rte. 276. To reach the site from the Court House take US 276 east for 3.2 miles beyond the junction with Rte.110 in Bethel and turn right into Burnette Cove Rd. The land is private property and is gated. The coordinates given are approximate only.

GPS coordinates: Long – W 82º 49.80', Lat – N 35º 26.60'

NICHOLS, CHARLES. R. BURIAL SITE

This single burial site is located in Waynesville. From the County Court House proceed north on North Main Street, about 0.6 miles to Maple Street. Turn left into Maple and the burial site is a on your left in about 50 yards. The headstone has fallen from the base and is leaning against a tree. Jack Nichols said that he tried, at one time, to research the background of Charles and was unable to learn his relation to the present day Nichols family.

GPS Coordinates: Long – W82º 59.890', Lat – N35º 29.810'

The inscription reads:

CHAS. R. NICHOLS

MAR 5, 1882-SEPT 24, 1907

PLESS BOYD CEMETERY

Located in the Rock Hill section of Jonathan Creek. From the intersection of US 19 and US 276N, proceed north on US 276N for four (4.0) miles and turn left onto Joe Carver Road (SR 1322). Cross Jonathan Creek and continue straight ahead, crossing Beantown Road (SR 1320). At a point four-tenths (0.4) mile from US 276 you will see a cattle gate on your right. The gate is difficult to open and unless you have considerable strength it would be better to park on the side of the road and walk to the cemetery. The lane climbs a short hill, turns right and then right again, at which time you can see the cemetery in front of you. This small cemetery is surrounded by a wire fence and is on the same ridge as the Rice and Carver Cemeteries

GPS Coordinates: Long – W83º 1.241', Lat – N35º 34.782', Alt – 2672feet

The inscriptions read:

BOYD INFANT OF W.P.& ME.

WILLIAM P. “BILL” BOYD

FEB 8, 1921 – DEC 22, 1991 OCT 14, 1913 - OCT 17, 1913

WILLIAM PLESS PARTON

BOYD MILES DOSHA

MAY 9, 1889 AUG 24, 1977 1872 - 1937 1869 - 1934

SHELTON LAUREL BURIAL SITE

Located in the Shelton Laurel area. From the courthouse, follow US 276N for 2.6 miles to its intersection with US 19, turn left and continue on US 276 and 19S for 2.3 miles to Dellwood where the routes separate. Turn right on 276 and proceed for 5.9 miles to the intersection with I-40. Enter I-40W and continue for 7.8 miles, exiting at a small gravel side road that is easily seen as you approach. Turn immediately left and left again, passing under I-40. Follow the road past the state gravel and salt facility until you are 0.2 miles from where you first entered the gravel road. The burial ground is on a low ridge to your left about 50 yards from the road.

GPS coordinates: Long - W83º 1.890, Lat N35º 40.940, Alt 2530 feet

Our first visit to this site was with Wilbur Teague, who remembers the site as a child. At that time, in the early 30s, the graves were marked with fieldstones. Although some of the stones are still there, they no longer mark the graves and it would have been difficult to determine just where the site was without a guide. Since that time the Forest Service has erected forest border signs on each of the four sides of the site. Neither Wilber nor the Forest Service Ranger that was asked about the site could shed any light on the origins of the site. Perhaps the trail of family ownership could be established by a real estate search if one desired.

McMAHAN BURIAL SITE

Located in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Designated CT-1. This site, lost for many years, was rediscovered by one of the park rangers a few years ago. It was flagged at that time, but it appears that the flag may have disappeared. Five trips were made into the area, the search based on the information on two old Cataloochee maps, a description in the GSMNP literature and sketch and verbal description of the immediate area by Park Ranger Walt West. The most likely site seems to be a small knob on a ridge just north of Correll Branch, a few hundred feet NW of the site of the Neal Sutton Sugar Camp. The coordinates of the top of the knob are given here as a reference for those who may wish to attempt to locate this site for themselves.

GPS coordinates: Long - W83º 6.12, Lat - 35º 41.7, Alt 3810 feet

ST. MARGARET'S CATHOLIC CHURCH COLUMBARIUM

Located in Maggie Valley. From the courthouse, follow US 276N for 2.6 miles to its intersection with US 19. Turn left and continue on 276N for 2.3 miles to Dellwood where the routes separate. Here, US19S leads to Maggie Valley. Proceed west on US19 for 4.7 miles and turn right into Living Waters Lane. This street forms a loop and is one way after the first road to the left. Proceed up the hill about 0.2 miles and the church will be seen as you go around the loop. Turn right onto Murphy Rd. and then immediately left into the church parking lot. The columbarium is just to the left of the church building, beneath the large cross.
