Where To Start

There are many well written guides on the web to help the beginner.  Our sponsor, Rootsweb, has a good one.   The "Beginners' Tool Kit: at AOL is another (AOL Keyword is "Roots").

Many more can be found at the page for beginning genealogists at Cyndi's List. A few minutes of reading one of the beginners's guides will save you many hours of frustration.

Also, go to our Guest Book and use the "Edit/Find" feature of your browser to search for other researchers studying the same surnames and send them an email.   Many genealogists are happy to share family information (which you should then verify independently) with their "cousins".

It may be useful to read "how to write an effective query" in one of the Beginner's Guides before sending an e-mail, submitting a query to HAWA, or posting a message on our Guest Book.

Good luck, and happy hunting!
