Madison County was formed in 1851 from Yancy and Buncombe Counties; named in honor of James Madison, fourth president of the United States. It is bounded by Buncombe, Haywood, and Yancey Counties, as well as Tennessee. The first court was held at the the tavern of Adolphus Baird, seven commissioners were to select a site for the county seat, to be named Marshall, named in honor of John Marshall, and to erect a courthouse. Madison County is still generally a rural community today.
