Mitchell County Families

The origins of this family are uncertain. In the 1850 Census of Yancey County, we find the following:
     Family No. 314: George W. Hileman (44) with Mary (35), Nancy (14), Sarah (12), Thomas (10), Anna (7), Rebecca (5), and Mary M. (4/12).
     Family No. 397: David Hileman (23) with Nancy (22), Jacob (5), Reubin (4), and Henry (1).
     Family No. 398: Thomas J. Sprouce (21), with Mahala (20), and Senia (3/12).
     Family No. 399: Anna Hileman (69) with Catharine (21), John C. (18), and Elizabeth (17).
According to Sarah Hardee (http://www.gencircles.com/users/joannehardee/1/data/156), George Hileman was the son of John Hileman and his wife Anne. A Genforum post by Jill Slack-Davis (http://genforum.genealogy.com/hileman/messages/220.html) indicates that Mahala Sprouce's maiden name was Hileman. It does not seem likely that Anna had her first child (of at least five) at the age of 46; it seems equally unlikely that her second child of six was born twenty-one years after her first. Perhaps this family moved to the Bakersville area when Anna was already a widow with other grown children, who remained behind. I am tentatively listing George, David, Mahala, and the three young people living with Anna as her children, but researchers should be aware that this theory has not been proven.

John Hileman died before 1850, leaving a widow, Anna. Anna was born about 1781, and apparently died between 1850 and 1860.
