Saturday, October 31, 2009 - Margaret Hofmann to Lecture in Charlotte NC. Margaret M. Hofmann, well-known author and lecturer of North Carolina genealogy, will give two free lectures on Saturday, October 31, 2009, at the Ray Hall Community Center, Aldersgate, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC. Sponsored by the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County (PLCMC), the two morning sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. and running until noon, are titled “300 Years of North Carolina Land Patents and Grants” and “Looking for the Old Courthouse.” Lectures are free, but registration is recommended by calling PLCMC at 704 416-0150. Ms. Hofmann of Weldon, NC, has authored numerous genealogical reference books and has lectured throughout the country for many years. Most notable is her series of abstracts of North Carolina land patents and grants from the colonial period through statehood. Her first lecture will describe Proprietary and Crown patents and state grants, as well as the land granted by John, Lord Carteret, in the Granville District of NC: where to find the records and what genealogists can expect to find in them. Her second lecture will describe her search for a 1730s courthouse in present-day Halifax County, NC, using almost exclusively deed books in the absence of wills, estates, bonds, etc., usually consulted. Books by Ms. Hofmann will be available for sale as will the publications from Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society, which is co-hosting the lectures. Light refreshments will be served. |
