The Beaufort County Tax List is found in the Treasurers and Comptrollers Papers, Box 1, NC Archives, Raleigh, NC. This Tax List includes the majority of what is now Beaufort and Pitt Counties and the northeastern half of Pamlico County. Transcribed by Roger Kammerer, the tax list was published in the Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly in Volume XIII, No. 3: August, 2006. The first number is for white poles (males age 16 and over), the second is for blacks and the third is the total. The clerk who made up the tax list had additional problems, so many of the numbers do not add up correctly. Use your find command to search for names. Note that many of the names are spelled phonetically and other names exist out of letter sequence. You may need to read the entire list to find your ancestor.
