Paramore Family

SOURCE: History of Beaufort County Pages 205-206
Murder of General Bryan Grimes
On 14 August 1880 General Bryan Grimes was shot from ambush by a shotgun blast. Two brother, W. B. and Howell Paramore, who operated a general store at nearby Nelson's Crossroads and who had quarreled with Genral Grimes over land boundaries were suspected. When the Sheriff reached Nelson's Crossroads the Paramore brothers had fled. Later William Parker who lived on a farm near Grime's plantation came under suspicion. Witnesses had said they had seen Parker carrying a shotgun on the afternoon of the shooting. Parker's first trial end in mistrial. Because of feelings in Beaufort the second trial was moved to Martin county in June of 1881. Before the trial word came that Howell Paramore had committed suicide in a hotel room in Cheraw, South Carolina. This cast doubt on Parker and he was aquitted.
Later Parker came to Washington and while drunk boasted of having killed General Grimes and had gotten away with it. Parker was locked up for his own protection but that night men came and took him out of the jail. Parker was found hanging from the Washington Bridge.
