Brown's Schoolhouse, Union Institute Academy, Normal College, Bonnie Looke, 30 Dec 1997
My mother and I are trying to make a family tree. We have papers saying an ancestor gave the property that was Brown's schoolhouse and later Union Institute Academy and later Normal College. There is supposed to be a plaque at the site thanking him and it is supposed to have his name on it. Do you know anything about this plaque or who the man was? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Bonnie

SHAW, Charles Shaw, 22 Dec 1997
I posted a query, here in October 1996. I have run into a lot of dead ends looking for information based on an assumption. I had read that Randolph County was previously a part of Guilford County. Recently I read that Randolph County became a separate county around 1779 - I'm not certain if this exactly true or not. The assumption that I had made was that my great, grandfather, Finley Washington Shaw was born in Guilford County, 9/15/1872. I believe the place of birth was in Randolph County, instead - if he was indeed born in NC. I know he farmed some land in Randolph County in the early 1900's, but it is possible, he was born in Arkansas, then moved to NC as a boy. Finley was also a Baptist preacher. He pastored at Sandy Creek Baptist Church in the early 1900's.
Finley was married to Nellie Amick (Nellie could be a nick name). He died and was buried 2/15/1939 in Franklinville, Randolph County, NC. One of his sons, William Hubbard Shaw was my grandfather. One of William Hubbard's sons was Gordon Barrs Shaw, my father - who was born in Randolph County (around Worthville, I believe), April 29, 1918.
I would appreciate any information from anyone about my ancestors. Thank you for your service and your cooperation.
Charles G Shaw (

Need information on Moses STEED, Nathaniel STEED, and Jesse STEED. They should be found from about 1765 through the Revolutionary period. I understand that there is a Randolph Co. book about 1815 that gives many family ties. Does somebody have access to that book? Thanks for any help.R.McCallum
