This is what I’ve been able to assemble on the Stone family of Anson/Montgomery/Stanly counties, NC. This line continues thru the marriage of Lucy Stone to William A Elliott. They spent some years in Cabarrus county and by 1900 were in Mecklenburg county, NC. There are as many questions as answers. I’d very much like to know the parentage of John F Stone 1807-1862 and his wife Nancy ? Stone 1801-1880. The parentage of William A Elliott remains a mystery as well, but that’s another story
The Stone Family of Stanly County, NC By Zelia H Cline Sept 16, 2005 Anson County was the mother of both Montgomery County to the east of the Pee Dee River and by1841 of Stanly County to the west of the Pee Dee. On the 19 Nov 1750, John Stone of Anson, planter, acquired “land on the west side of the Pee Dee river”. In 1800 census there were three households of Stones in Montgomery Co.
On 3 October 1805 “Charles Travis deeds to Richard and John Stone of Anson County for $250.00, 250 acres on the west side of the Pee Dee river”.
Land grants of 350 acres of land in Montgomery for a Richard Stone laid out by a Will Stone surveyor, were made in 1808 and 1809 on the “waters of Clover fork on Long Creek”. On 8 Oct 1813, 136 acres were laid off for John F Stone “below the head of the Ceader Branch of the south fork of Mountain Creek”. brOn Jan 27 1824 Richard Stone acquired 26 and a half acres “on the southwest side of the Yadkin (Pee Dee) River on the waters of Clover fork of Long Creek” in Montgomery County.
From these records it seems that the Stones land was on the west side of the river in what became Stanly County in 1841. These earliest land grants were forbears of the John F Stone family of Albemarle. We do not know the parents of either John F or his wife Nancy Stone. He may be son of the John F Stone above, or either Richard or Will?
The John F Stone who appears on the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Stanly County appears to have been born about 1807. His wife Nancy was born about 1801. Their eldest child, Mary H, was born in 1828 so we conclude that their marriage took place in Montgomery County about 1827. No record of this marriage has been found.
The 1841 tax list of Stanly County in District #8 has John F Stone with 1 poll taxed fifty cents. In Freeman’s Store Ledger John F Stone purchased 2 coppries in 1842. This product was sold by the ounce, and used to dye fabric. During this time John F Stone’s name was frequently found on court documents as a witness or on a board of commissioners assigned to separate the one third dowry for widows.br Samuel S Stone was the register of deeds. He lived in Albemarle with his wife Sarah and his large family. They were close in age and were probably cousins if not brothers. Samuel’s son W D Stone was in 1900 census of Mecklenburg Co with his family. In 1905, he was a pallbearer when W A Elliott was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte, NC with the other civil war soldiers.
The 1856 Stanly Tax List District #9 lists J F Stone as owning 226 acres of land worth $565.00. He also owned a personal carriage worth $50.00. His tax was $3.40. W A Elliott was listed with 1 poll, tax was $1.40. John F Stone and his family attended Bethesda Methodist Episcopal Church South on Hwy 138, formerly the Rocky River Springs Road about 2 miles south of Albemarle. The people in this area were mostly Baptist in faith until Bethesda organized about 1847. The membership was good substantial people who lived in the community. The men’s roll of the church included John F Stone and W A Elliott. The women’s roll listed Nancy Stone, Mary H Stone, Lucy A Stone, Sarah C Stone.W H Easterling became the pastor of this church in 1854. He may have married Lucy A Stone and William A Elliott Dec 22, 1853. W A Elliott was born 3 March 1829 and died 23 July 1905. W M Easterling did sell them the family bible on 18 Feb 1854 for the great sum of $3.25. Lucy Elliott faithfully filled in births and deaths of her family including the day of the week.
In 1860 Stanly County census records William A Elliott, his wife Lucy and their daughter Mary Lu Elliott living in Albemarle, NC where William was a cabinetmaker.William A Elliott enlisted in the Civil War from Stanly County at age 32 on September 7, 1861. He served in Co K in the 28th Regiment of NC and was present or accounted for thru February 1865. When he applied for a pension in 1901 his doctor certified that “W A Elliott is a sufferer from chronic bronchitis contracted in the Civil War which incapacitates him for any physical labor”.” During the war, I’m sure his wood working and blacksmithing skills were well used keeping the wagons rolling. No great awards come to those behind the scenes, but there are many good soldiers serving there quietly.
Adam Whitman Stone also enlisted with the Stanly men on 7 Sept 1861. He was elected 1st Lt, was promoted to 2nd Lt and finally Captain. He suffered wounds seven different times, the last at Gettysburg where he was with Pickett’s charge. This last injury was very near his heart under the aorta. This injury gave him great pain until his death. He was with his men until the “stacking of arms” on April 11,1865 at Appamatox, Va.
John F Stone had died by 1862 . The 1864 Stanly tax lists A W Stone as owning 159 acres worth $500. The tax was $5.00.Adam Whit Stone married Sarah E Dorsett of Randolph Co, NC 28 Dec 1865. She was the daughter of William Marsh and Marab (Dicks) Dorsett. In 1870 Stanly Co census, Adam was living in Albemarle, NC with his wife Sallie and their three girls and his mother Nancy. On 2 June 1867 in Stanly Co, Mary H Stone married Jesse Hathcock, son of James Hathcock, J O Ross, JP. In 1870 Mary and Jesse were living in Center Twp, Stanly Co with their one year old son, Matthew.
On19 June 1868, Sallie C Stone married James F Dorsett, son of Spencer M and Louisa Viny Dorsett of Randolph Co. A W Stone and his family moved on west to Texas later in 1870. In 1880 they lived in Precinct 3, Red River, Texas. Whit Stone was 45 years old and a merchant. He had three children, Lulu 12, Blanche 11, and Ora 10. William A Elliott, wife Lucy (Stone) and Mary Lu were living in Mt Pleasant, NC in 1880. He was a carriagemaker. Up the street several houses lived Jesse Hathcock and Mary (Stone) and their son Walter Matthew Hathcock. Jesse was a wagonmaker. On this same street lived two blacksmiths. The livery stable was nearby. From the account below we can tell they had moved there in 1875. The 1880 mortality schedule records the account of Nancy Stone, 81, widow, pauper, died of “flux” in May 1880. She had been living with her daughter Mary Hathcock before her death. Nancy had been a resident of the county 5 years. She was the patient of Dr. John W Moose, whose office was in the H C McAllister Drug Store building.
While in Mt Pleasant, Mary Lu met a young student of the NC Collegiate Institute, Joseph Michael, son of Jacob Michael of Alamance Co. In December 1879 ,they were married by J B Alford in Cabarrus County.Twenty years passes before another census is extant to tell us just what went on in these families. We find the Elliotts living in Charlotte, NC near the Joe Michael family. William is a wood turner who lives on Brevard St. In 1905 W A Elliott dies and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in the section for Civil War veterans. Lucy Elliott lives until 12 December 1920. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Charlotte, N C near her family.
The Michaels had three children, all born in Mt Pleasant, NC: Elmer Durwood Michael was born 30 Sept 1881, Vivian Lee Michael, was born14 Sept 1883 and died in Charlotte 24 Oct 1924, and Lorena Joe Michael was born 14 April 1886.
In the 1900 Texas census A Whit Stone was 65 years old, he and Sallie had been married 35 years. Sallie had 5 children, 3 had lived:
Lula Virginia Stone was b Oct 23 1866 in Stanly County, NC. She died in Lampasas, TX on 28 Feb 1928. She married E N Wolf 15 July 1883 in Lampasas.
Ora Stone was born in NC in 1869. She married Daniel Greer in Lampasas on January 20, 1889. They died in Beaumont, Texas.
Blanche Stone was born by 1873 in NC. On January 19, 1895, she married Willie Jones in Lampasas, Texas.
