I have a great great grandmother Hattie E. HELMS born 12 Aug 1857 and died 13 May 1927 in Union County. She married Martin P. PRIVETT (20 May 1863-21 Apr 1932) about 1882. I have been unable to find any additional information on her. Recently I found about one Harriett Elizabeth HELMS born abt 1858 in Anson County. Harriett married William Kendrick MEDLIN on 1 Jul 1878 in Union County. Someone has suggested that these are the same people. Did Hattie after a short marriage to Mr Medlin marry Martin Privett? Any help would be appreciated.

My ancestor Jonathan & Nancy (Preslar/Presson???) SHELBY lived in late 1790-1820s on Chinkapin Creek crosses Sikes Road. I have some books in the courthouse or the library about Shelbys...need to know if I sent "Rees & Mary Shelby, ancestors & descendants" 500 pages red hard back. I hurt my arms doing that book, I guess, and have been out of commission. Jonathan & Nancy Shelby lived next to Peter Preslar...hence suspect she is daughter because some of that land is now cemetery; they both belonged to Hig Hill Primitive Baptist Church... would like to correspond with descendants. Monsieur Price was neighbor.

Where is PAGELAND  in Union County, N. C.?  I have been advised that there
is an old EVANS CEMETERY in PAGELAND in Union County
My ancestor was PARROT EVANS b. 1802 in Anson/Union County, North Carolina.
The land where PARROT EVANS lived was on Rays Fork of Richardson Creek -
now in eastern Union County.

He had a son, PARROT ALEXANDER EVANS who was born there November 13, 1835
and died there March 13, 1837.

The father of PARROT EVANS was probably JOHN EVANS who died before 1810.
He is probably burried there also.

The mother of PARROT EVANS was REBECCA who later married a BURNETTE.
The mother, REBECCA, is NOT buried there.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am researching the above-listed families.  My father was Lawrence
Houston Medlin of Monroe, Union County where he was born in 1888, d. 1969.  He
married first to Edith Wager, d. 1928, and had three sons and a daughter by
her.  He then married my mother in 1930 and had myself, the oldest child, and
my sister and brother.  I am trying to determine why his first wife died, one source
says breast cancer, the other tuberculosis.  I cannot locate a death certificate in Union County.

My father apparently owned a jewelry store with one of his sisters in Monroe
and I would like to get more information about that, also.

My grandfather, Garrison Boswell Medlin was a judge and a
justice of the peace in Monroe and I would like to obtain more information
about him and his work.

HELMS, Sampson Dawster born May 7, 1824, Mecklenburg County, in what is now Union County, NC.
Moved with his parents, unknown to me, to Georgia in 1836.  Married in Muscogee County, GA,  Dec. 24, 1846 to Missouri Caroline Parker.  Moved to Alabama in 1858, served in Company D, 32nd Georgia Infantry.  After the war, moved to Bowie County, Texas, 1867.  Died March 23, 1902 at Maud, Texas.  Has many descendants now in Texas and elsewhere.

Searching for any information leading to Sampson's parents.  Currently investigating whether Charles Helms (b. 1793) and Holley, both of Mecklenburg County could have been parents of Sampson Dawster Helms.  A close neighbor of Charles Helms in 1830 Mecklenburg County was one Sampson Doster.  Could he be Holley's father?  He was about the right age.  Charles and Holley moved to Muscogee County, GA, where Sampson later married, around 1836.  The only listings I have for Charles Helms' children are from the 1850 Georgia census, when Sampson had already left home.  But he does fit right in between the known children of Charles and Holley.  Any clues are much appreciated.

Mecklenburg Co., N.C.  I believe they moved to Union County and remained there a few years before moving to

The surnames that I am researching are from Union, Stanly and Anson
If any one has any information about any of these surnames, I would love to
hear from you. My "brick wall" in the Hill line is the father of Julius
Hill - John Hill. I know he married Mary Yeats (Yates), sister of Milea
Yeats, who was the wife of Myrick Harward. He was born in England and Mary
Yates was born in Ireland. Another brick wall is in the Little line. I need
the parents of Joseph A. Little who married Janette Deas (Deese). They had
a daughter Fetna Jane Little who married Noah Columbus Curlee.

In that census John (age 40) is living in with wife Nepsy age 38, and children William age 19, Sarah age 16, John age 13, Lee age 11, James age 9, Margaret A. age 7, Molsy E. age 5, Ella M. age 3, and Mary I. infant. Nepsy’s maiden name was BRIGMAN, and is thought to be the sister of John BRIGMAN who is living in the next dwelling on the 1850 census. The 1860 Union Co. census has William, Sarah, John, Lee and James as having left home. John GRIFFIN is listed as a farmer, Nepsy as a weaver, and
Margaret, listed as Adaline, now 16, listed as a spinstress, there is also listed another child Elizabeth L. age 7. Their post office is Lane’s Creek, later Monroe NC.

The 1870 Union Co. census shows James P. GRIFFIN age 29 with his family living in dwelling 212 near John &
Nepsy GRIFFIN (dwelling 214). James P. GRIFFIN’s family is listed as: Elizabeth age 34, John age 5,
Laura age 3, Rebecca age 2, and another daughter age 1.

I decend from William S. GRIFFIN listed in the 1850 census as William. William married Elizabeth PARKER, daughter of Willie and Ellen PARKER in Union Co. NC in 1852. William effected a Marriage Bond on 27 July 1852 which was witnessed by A. Richard GRIFFIN and Robert BRIGMAN before R. Rogers. They were married that same date. William S. GRIFFIN and Elizabeth had three children born in Union Co. before moving to Alcorn
Co. Mississippi around 1860; William Ellis, Joseph and Bennet H. GRIFFIN.

I have much information to share on the William S. GRIFFIN branch of this family. I have come to a halt on working back much further.

Jim Griffin

King, Sikes, Beasley

Fri Jan 10 .1997
I have been trying to find factual connections to my NC roots. I am researching the surnames: King, Sikes, Beasley of Union County. Hiram King is a far back as I have been able to go. My grandmother was Daisy M King, b. 1897 and later moved to MT, married, moved to OR, divorced and remaried all un different names. This has been a most difficult family member to research. There are also genetic problems that have been passed on through her last three generations. Daisy's father was Benjamin Franklin King aka Frank King. I know he was born in Monroe and moved away for a time and then returned. I also know he was married twice. It is the first wife I need information about. Her name was Flora C. (maybe Gray) according to the 1900 Census. Apparently she died accidently or???? and B.F./Frank remarried and lived happily ever after with his second wife Martha. There were two children from the first marriage, Geo. B.W. King and Daisy M. King. The second wife there was one child Ethel M. who married a Watts and moved to Baltimore, where she is buried. I would really appreciate any help with this family. Would also like to know if any of these surnames served in the Civil War. I don't have a problem with either side. I'm from the west. Dawn Hines

Like to get any info on Melton family. A lot of my relatives are buried in Sandy Ridge Baptist Church's cemetary. Farthest back I can find is my grandfather, James Alexander Melton born 8/4/1854, died 9/3/1936, and my grandmother, Carrie Helms Melton Deese born 12/10/1902, died 11/27/1978. Yes, if you do the math there is 48 years difference in their ages. My youngest uncle was conceived when James A. was 76 years old. Go 'head, Grampa! I think that his dad was John Melton, a Union County Civil War hero, but haven't any documented proof. I also think there's ties to Laney, and Gay families. Any help greatly appreciated.

Wed Oct 8 1997   I am looking for any and all info on the TRULL surname in or around Union County, NC. I am specifically looking for a Gillum (or Gillom) TRULL born ABT 1826 who married a Caroline ROLAND (or ROWLAND). My branch of this family moved to GA by about 1850. By about 1870, Caroline had remarried to a Charles COLEMAN. I'm assuming Gillum passed away. Among others Gillum and Caroline had a son named William M. TRULL who married a Samantha (MOORE or RINER). I believe Gillum was married in NC, but William was probably married in GA. So far Union County, NC is the only county in NC where I have found TRULLs mentioned. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. And info on ANY "TRULLs" would be appreciated as well. I would like to get people who are researching the name TRULL together as there are a lot of us, but TRULL is not exactly common. Thank you for your time  Melinda TRULL HEATH

I am interested in a Tomberlin family that lived in Union Co. in the early 1800s. My ancestor was Dempsey Tomberlin, b. 1806, married to Sarah ?, b. 1810, both born in North Carolina. They moved to Arkansas, near Pine Bluff about 1857. There is a definite conncection to David Tomberlin of Union Co. Was he Dempsey's brother? Other sources indicate that either Édmon or Moses Tomberlin was Dempsey's father but no proof. Sarah's maiden name would help immensely.

I am researaching my husband's line of BROOKS that lived in the New Salem area. Serena Keziah BROOKS (1862-1927) is his GGGM. Serena is the daughter of Davidson BROOKS 1815-1893 and his first wife Keziah Melinda TARLTON 1825-1864. Davidson's additional wives were Nancy Angeline PYRON and Nancy GRIFFIN, and he had over 20 children. Would like to correspond with others doing similar research.

I am researching my husband's line of LITTLE that lived in the New Salem area and Marshville. He descends from Elder George LITTLE who died in Union Co on Aug 22 1853. His line from George is through son Farrington LITTLE to son George Milton LITTLE to son Henry Frank LITTLE (who moved to Bladen Co in the 1910s). George is the grandson of Capt Daniel LITTLE of Salisbury, Rowan Co, NC. Would like to correspond with others doing similar research.

I'm looking for information on the Starnes family of Prospect Community as well as the Courtney's and Irby's. My dad was born and raised in Union Co and my Uncle Stoye Starnes did some genealogical research about 20 years ago. I can go back to my ggfather Hilliard Judge Starnes and his wife Julia Ellen Irby with pretty much complete information but need info past there. I'll be happy to share what I have.
