History of Vance County

In 1881, Vance county was formed for political reasons from 3 other counties, Granville, Warren and Franklin.  The democrats wanted to obtain more votes from a predominately Republican area.  It was named after a former governor and senator of NC state, Zebulon Vance.  This area was and still is predominately filled with African-American citizens.  A book was written about the history of the Vance County, called "Zeb's Black Baby".

Kerr Lake, nee 'car lake', was created out of plantations and farm lands between 1946 and 1953.  It is a man-made lake bringing in revenue for the county with tourism, fishing tournaments and water supply.  This lake is shared with the state of Virginia.
