The Swedishchurch records indicate that Karl Larrson's ancestors had lived in this area of rural Sweden since the 1700 hundreds. Many of his decedents still live in the area. Karl's name at birth was Karl Larsson. He was the son of Lars Svensson Hultman and Katharina Jonsdotter. (see below)
The origin of the Hultman name came from the military. When a person joined the Swedish military he was often given a name to identify him from others of the same family name. Most of these military names were taken from the area that the person was from. As Karl Larrson and his father Lars Svensson before him, were in the army they took the name Hultman to identify them from other Larsson. (Karl Larsson from Haltebyn and Lars Svensson from Haltebyn) The name latter was changed to Hultman. As a soldier Karl was stationed in the Haltebyn area, much like a member of the National Guard. In an interview with his youngest daughter, Olga Hultman, conducted in May 1992, Olga stated that her father would walk to Karlstad, Sweden one month a year for training, Karlstad is located about 75 miles from Haltebyn.
According to the Karlanda Parish records, Karl hultman and Kajsa Karlsdotter had 11 children, the eldest, Laura Hultman immigrated to the United States in 1908. All the other children remained in Sweden and several are buried with their parents at the Karlanda Church cemetery. In 1905 Karl received a parcel of land at Smolmark for his army service. Smolmark is another area of farms located about 2 miles south of Haltebyn.
Karl's wife, Kajsa Karlsdotter, was born on 17 Sept 1861, at Vannacka, Karlanda Parish, Sweden. She was the daughter of Carl Andersson and Karin Elofsdotter.
There is no trace of the Hultman homestead at Haltebyn, however Karl's home at Smolmark remains in the family. Karl and Kajsa lived in this home until Karl died on l Dec 1942 and Kajsa on 15 Feb 1947. There son Oscar lived on the farm until he died on 30 Oct 1974 and Oscar's son, Gunnar lived on the farm until he died on 15 Dec 1990. The farm of Karl and Kajsa still remains in the family.
The information on the Karl Hultman family was obtained from interviews with his daughter Olga Solder of Glava, Sweden and several grandchildren that still live in the Hultebyn/Smolmark area. Information was also obtained from the parish records of the Karlanda-Holmeda parish with background information from Rev Bo Sandstrom, priest of the Karlanda-Holmeda parish (May 1992) Among the records found were Laura Hultman's grade for confirmation (C), the record of her leaving for the United States and the records of her two uncles Gustave and Otto Hultman (brothers of Karl) leaving for the United States in 1884 and 1890. Information was also obtained at the Swedish records center in Gotenburg, Sweden and from copies of the records provided by the LDS church, Salt Lake City, Utah.
During a visit to the Karlanda parish area in May 1992 the old Karlanda church and cemetery was visited. Karl and Kajsa are buried near the left side of the church. Three of their children are also buried near by; Hilma Hultman Kullgren, Arthur Hultman and Oscar Hultman. Like all Swedish church, the burial grounds are keep in excellent shape, however no graves were found that were more than a 150 years old.
Like his son he was given the army name of Lars Svensson from Hultebyn after joining the army 1845. His name then appeared in the parish records as Hultman. LDS records indicate that Lars Svensson Hultman and Katharina Jonsdotter were married 17 April 1847 at Vishums, Kil, however this has not been verified.
Lars lived at Hultebyn until 6-11-1870 when he moved to the nearby area of Lyssas where he was living with his son Karl. Lars died at Lyssas on 16 Dec 1780. His wife Katharina, died on 23 April 1916 It is unknown were Lars and his wife Katharina Jonsdotter are buried. It is possible that both are buried at the Karlanda Church, because of a lack of money a grave marker may not have been possible.
Katharina's granddaughter, Laura Hultman, lived with her grandmother when Laura was nine years old. According to the parish records Katharina was living with her son Anders at the time of her death. She first came to Hultebyn in 1843 from Lyssas and is listed as living with Lisa Oldsdotter who could be an Aunt. Both are listed as Maids.
Katharina Jonsdotter's father was Jon Christophersson born 8 October 1790 in the Parish of Eda, Varmland, Sweden. The area of Eda has been found listed as Skantz, Sweden, however this area has not been located in the Parish of Eda.
Jon's parents are listed as Par Jacobsson and Elin Erirsdotter, however no record related to them has been found.
Jon first appears in the record at Lyssas, Karlanda Parish in 1815. He is listed with his wife Sicilia Olsdotter and a son Olof. He spent most of his life at Lyssas, Karlanda Parish. he died at Lyssas on 11 January 1865 Sicilia Olsdotter was born 4 November 1789 at Bjorkebol, Karlanda, Parish. No record can be found for her after 1862. Her parents were Olof Persson born 1764 at Lyssas and Borit Andersdotter born 1764 at Bjorkebol.
Olof Persson's parents could possibly be Par Jacobsson born 1721 and Elin Erirsdotter born 1716. These people were living at Lyssas in 1774.
Borit Andersdotter's parents were Anders Andersson Born 1735, died 1788 at Bjorkebol and Karin Clasdotter born 1724.

In the parish record the family apparently moved from Djuv in 1788 however there is no indication as to where the family went. The family appears in the parish records for Djuv in 1798. Sven Larsson moved out to Hultebyn, Karlanda Parish in 1800. He appears in the parish record for Hultebyn, Karlanda Parish in 1815. He is listed as being married to Anna Elfsdotter who was born in 1783 in Hultebyn. Her parents were Elof Gunnarsson and Marit Nilsdotter. Elof was born in Hultebyn in 1753. They had four known children:
Prior to her marriage to Lars, Ingeborg was living in Sildodal Parish in the area called Djuv. The the 1753-1757 parish record for Djuv, she is listed with a Nilsdotter, born 1710. Neither her or her husband, Lars Larsson are found in the the 1757-1763 parish record, but are listed from 1764 to 1804. A dim notation for 1804 after Lars Larsson may read "out to Jarnskog,"which is a parish and a town located just North of the Karlanda parish. The parents of Lars and his wife are unknown
