It is believed that Richard Whitworth was married first to Elizabeth Rhodes on 25 Feb 1811 in Thornhill, York. She died between 1811 and 1815 as Richard married Elizabeth Crabtree on 4 Dec 1814. This information per Roger Whitworth, Worcester, England.

On the marriage record Abraham is listed as a Blacksmith and his father, Richard Whitworth, is listed as a Collier. Margaret was listed as being 19 years old and a spinster. Mirfield is about four miles from the town of Dewsbury. The location of the Whitworth family from the time Abraham was baptized until he was married is unknown. It was reported in a history of Knox county, Ohio that Abraham's father was killed in a mining accident when he was a small child. In this history his mother is listed as Martha. Neither statement has been proven and is probably not accurate.

Margaret Thornton was the daughter of John Thornton and Carthrine Brook. She was born in the parish of Mirfield , Yorkshire, England on 4 March 1820. John Thornton and Carthrine Brook were married on 8 Dec 1815 in Mirfield Parish. In 1816 the Thornton family was living in an area of Mirfield Parish called Leegreen, in 1822 they were living in an area called Little London. They were still in this area in 1829.
