Burleigh County was created by the 1872-1873 territorial legislature. It was named for Walter Atwood Burleigh, a physician, attorney, and railroad contractor. The government was organized July 16, 1873. County seat: Bismarck 1873-present. Area 1652 square miles. 2000 population -- 69,416.
