Saint Martin's Catholic Cemetery

The NE Quarter of the NE Quarter of Section 20 in Township 143 N, Range 91 W Dunn County, ND, USA
St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery is still used and maintained. It consists of two sections, the old and the new. The old section may have started back when St. Martin’s Catholic Church was first organized in 1906. Most of its members were German settlers who came to this area from South Russia. The new section of the cemetery was located in the churchyard and laid out in 1931. It is 1.2 acres large. The church’s first trustees, Nick Kohm and Paul Voltz are interred here in the new section.

The church eventually closed July 1, 1986 due to dwindling membership and the poor farm economy. The church was purchased and dismantled by Tony Schumacher in 1987.

St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery is 7 ½ miles south of Dodge on 81st Ave S.W. and 1 mile west on 15th Street S.W.

This list was transcribed from interment records provided by the sexton and is considered incomplete because there are no records of interments from the old section of this cemetery. As of 7/24/2002 there were 148 individuals listed in the interment book for the new section. According to Dauntless Dunn II - 1989 A History of Dunn County North Dakota pages 93 and 94 and a newspaper article by Leonard Lund entitled “Prairie landmark may have to close its doors” printed in the spring of 1986 (publication unknown), it was speculated the old section had an approximate population of 94. (Please note, all the historical information listed here came from these two publications. Information for the size of the new section and plat date was provided from the Register of Deeds, Dunn County, ND.)
