Orange

Settlers from northern Minnesota came here in 1878 and a post office was established November 12, 1879 in SE 1/4 Section 10-151-54, Arvilla Township with Webster Merrifield, who was later prominent in the affairs of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks as post master. The name was suggested by James H. Mathews, owner of the nearby New York Farm, to note his former home in Orange County, New York, which was named for the European royal family of Orange-Nassau which has both Dutch and English branches. In 1882 it moved one mile north to the home of new post master George Hughes in SE 1/4 Section 3-151-54 and later that year it moved two miles east to a new Great Northern RR townsite, adopting the name Arvilla.

Arvilla

Settlement began here in 1878, and the following year the Orange post office was established. In May 1882 a Great Northern Rail Road townsite was platted in SE1/4 Section 1-151-54, Arvilla township, about two miles east of Orange on land owned by Dudley H Hersey. On June 28,1882, post master Frank B Merriman moved the Orange post office to the new townsite, changing the name to honor the owner's wife, Arvilla Estella Wardwell Hersey.
